Description of Work: Radon remediation that decreased measured level by nearly 2/3 and below maximum suggested level. Work was successful though job was particularly problematic given my home consisted of multiplicity of pads that were remediated with one system.

Description of Work: They came out ready to do the work, and I was ready to pay $1,300 to get a Radon mitigation system installed, but upon seeing my basement configuration and my Radon test, the guy advised me that I really did not need his system. It would not help me all that much and the Radon situation was not a danger to house residents. He could have done it and I'd have paid gladly. That was pretty amazing and deeply professional.

We were recommended by our realtor to use this company, they offered a discount if scheduled according to their schedule not ours. We agreed and had a phone consultation. During the consult, we gave specific details about our basement and made it as clear as we could that this was not a typical radon mitigation install. For example; we said there is always water in the sump pit, it is high in the pit, and there are 2 sump systems installed and a perimeter drain. When the installers came out they did not have the right equipment to seal the sump pit because of the 2 sump systems. They also had nothing to seal the perimeter drain and quoted something like $2.50 per linear foot for a chemical that "lets water go down but does not let radon come up". I find that extremely hard to believe. At the time of install it was only my wife at the house and I think they were trying to take advantage of her unfamiliarity with building systems. When questioned more closely about alternatives, the installer said they could seal the basement entry door. My wife asked why and the installer said because carbon dioxide could enter through the door. That made absolutely no sense. On the phone, SWAT said they would give a guarantee that their work would reduce the radon level to below the EPA recommendation, but the installer said that they couldn't provide that guarantee because of the high water and perimeter drain. My wife asked them to not do the install and the installer complained to her about having to keep his helper busy. That was a very unprofessional pressure tactic and we did not appreciate it. They did not do any work for us and we would not recommend them. However, the company was responsive and the workers arrived on time and well dressed.

It was very difficult finding someone who would do a job in Philly on a house with a crawl space that was too small to enter. I had to contract others to dig the hole so they could access the sub-slab area. Once that was done, SWAT installed the system professionally.

I can't say enough about how professional they are. I met the regional manager at the property and he explained what we were looking for and how he would test for radon. He also explained how their system worked and how it might be implemented if there was a problem. The test results are evaluated by a 3rd party testing company so I knew the results would be accurate and wouldn't be influenced by SWAT Environmental.. The tests came back positive with fairly high levels of radon (over 80 PiC/L). James came out a second time and explained how they would install the system and retest, guaranteeing that they would get the radon down below 4 PiC/L They scheduled the installation within a week. The installation technician, Sean, was unbelievable. He was neat, courteous and did a fantastic job with the installation. All holes were clean and neat, the exterior work was excellent and they even took the pipe up through the overhang to the roof - minimizing the visual impact of the system on the home. The pipe and fan system were painted to match the gutters and really fit in with the rest of the house. The system brought radon levels down to 30 PiC/L but not enough to resolve the issue. The house is unusual construction - it's on a two level slab and the floors and ceilings are beam and plank construction - no joist cavities. The house was originally built and owned by an architect so the construction is unique and unlike any other house we've seen. I'm not surprised we had problems getting the radon levels down on the first try. The amazing thing is they came back and installed a second system AT NO ADDITIONAL COST. Their guarantee is more than just giving your money back - they continued to work on the two systems until radon level met EPA standards. That's how amazing this company is. There was never a suggestion of them pulling out or making excuses. I can't say enough about how professional this company is. I work in the construction industry and never have I run into a company that is as committed to resolving problems and great customer service as this one. If I could hire these guys to do my construction work my life would be so much easier and I'd hire them tomorrow if Sean or James wanted to jump ship.
Description of Work: They did a great job - first evaluating the existing levels of Radon and finally putting systems in place to get radon levels below the required 4 PiC/L levels required by the EPA.
