The previous owner of the house had installed extra insulation in the attic which was blocking the soffit vents and causing moisture collection on underside of the roof sheating. The Hackman representative arrived promptly and was very professional. He donned booties to keep from tracking dirt from the attic onto the carpet. His recommendation to solve the problem was to install a roof ventilation fan. The house has a ridge vent and gable vents. I disagreed with the recommendation feeling that a roof fan would draw air in through the ridge vent and gable vents and not from the soffit vents unless something was done to remove the insulation blocking those vents. I did some research on the internet and found information confirming my thoughts and one opinion was that a fan could actually draw moisture in through the ridge vent during a rain.

We did not find this roofing contractor on Angie’s list. I noticed their sign in front of a neighbor’s house. My neighbor gave them a good reference. Then I checked the Better Business Bureau website where Hackman Roofing had an A+ rating and was BBB accredited since 2003. We already had estimates from 2 previous contractors. There are 2 Hackman Roofing companies listed on Angie’s list, both with addresses in Elizabethtown. This is the Hackman on S. Mount Joy St., which also does business as KangaRoof, owned by Clint and Ed. Clint told me that there has been no connection between these 2 businesses for over 10 years. The other Hackman is on Bainbridge Street, and is listed as R D Hackman on Angie’s List, and D R Hackman on the BBB Web site (initials reversed?). The Hackman I used has a nice Website and a large showroom in Elizabethtown. Clint came out to my house three times before the job started. He brought extra samples. He had no trouble working around my busy schedule. He is a young, nice, professional guy, wore a uniform, and gave a nice presentation without being pushy or canned. I got a good vibe from him. I had to phone him a few times and Clint always picked up his cell or Marnie answered the phone at their office. Hackman started work when promised, with a one-day delay because of wind. The job lasted four days. There was a little rain but no problems. They left everything neat each day. They cut new ridge vents along the entire length of my roof. We kept the area around the edge of the house free of any lawn furniture, etc. that might get dirty from this job. Cutting the ridge vents left a bit of a mess in the attic. I recommend covering or removing anything stored in the attic that you would not want to get covered with sawdust if they are cutting new ridge vents. They state their workers are drug tested. The roof looks great, appears to be high quality to me. Time will tell how it holds up but I am not worried. I went with the GAF Timberline Heavy Duty, which is what I believe is what they recommend for their residential work. I work long hours and am very busy so I go a lot by how convenient and hassle-free the job goes. Once they started working on the roof, I did not have to deal with any issues. Their price estimate was mid-range for a better quality shingle than I was getting with a couple of other roofers, so very good value. Clint came out after the work was done and did a final inspection with me. I would use them again.
