Brian looked professional and checked our old units and gave us the quote quickly. He explained his proposal and patiently answered all the questions we had and gave us information booklet about the equipment suggested. O'Brien was the 2nd on our list. If there are any future work about HVAC, we will still consider O'Brien.
Description of Work: Brian from O'Brien Heating & AC came on time as scheduled to do the free estimate for replacing our old HVAC system.

Took 3 days to order the part then a week for part to come in. We were without heat for 2 weeks. Then one month later lost heat again. Called someone else who arrived next day and replaced a motor same day.

Response from O'Brien Heating & Air Conditioning
I'm sorry to hear that the customer was inconvenienced in this way. The call was handled late in the afternoon on a Friday 11/15 after the appropriate supplier had closed. (The furnace was a less common brand with limited distribution.) Upon ordering the part on Monday, we found that not even the area distributor had the part and were forced to wait for them to ship it to us. This unfortunately led to the part not being installed until Monday 11/25. The cost of the repair was $325 and would not be involved with the other issue of a blower motor failure. We do our very best to carry on our trucks or in stock, the parts most likely to fail on the most popular brands. On some occasions, however, due to the variety of makes and models on the market, we do need to depend on the appropriate distributor for parts support. In this case, that did not happen in a timely fashion.

We had some concerns about efficiency of our 1 year old boilder and accuracy of our thermostat. Bryan checked out the boiler and thermostat, but after talking it over, we decided to go with a programmable thermostat. Bryan had one on the truck and installed it the same day, saving us the time of scheduling another appointment. He showed us how to operate the unit and set up a program for weekdays. I'm hoping it will save us money on future utility bills.
Description of Work: Bryan came out to perform routine maintainance on our boiler.

Since you can't see much of the results of an inspection and tune -up, it is hard to say. The price of the service includes a 1-year, not-automatically-renewed service contract. Also pd. an additional $70? or so for 3 lbs? of old-school freon.

Technician was friendly, punctual and communicated well. We ended up having someone else do the work due to the availability of when the repairs could be completed. O'Brien's wanted to charge close to $240. just to replace the thermostat and I did feel this was a bit expensive, especially because we only needed a digital, non-programable thermostat. The contractor who completed the work also came in $100. cheaper, but I would still recommend O'Brien's.

My appointment with O'Brien Heating and Air Conditioning went very nicely. They gave me great estimates for the job of installing a new heating unit. My old heating system was inspected and I was given some good advice. Though I did not pick O'Brien Heating and Air Conditioning for my project, I may contact them in the future.

I called Obrien to have them come out to clean my gas furnace and said that it occasionally didn't start and I had to turn it off and on to get it to start. I wanted the technician to also look it over and see what was needed to get the unit back in shape. An appointment was scheduled for next Friday, 4 to 6 PM. Friday afternoon about ten after four a customer rep from O'Brien called to say the technician was going to be late. That was appreciated. Then another call from a second customer rep. who said there was going to be an (what I thought was an additional) $99 charge since this was an emergency -no heat - call. I got a bit mad at hearing this I must admit, why was I being told this a week after the appointment was scheduled and an hour after the tech was scheduled to arrive. This second customer rep blamed the confusion on the rep I had talked to before, with the excuse 'she is new.' I explained I wanted a cleaning, the customer rep explained that the charge was going to be $180 but I could reduce that to $108 if I signed up for a service contract. I agreed, saying that I was happy with the job they did when they installed the furnace at my old house. The rep looked that up and said that they had changed out a water heater but had no record of a new furnace. (I had forgotten about the water heater, but I later looked and found the check for $5900.00 - so they must have lost the records or there are two O'Brien's in the area) About ten minutes after that the first rep called again to say the tech was stuck in traffic but was on his way. By now I was starting to get confused and was wondering what the heck was going on. The tech arrived about 5:30, within the appointment window which was appreciated, a said he was here for a no heat call. I said that I had just spoken to the office and we had changed it to a tune up / cleaning. Downstairs the tech checked the filter and it was a bit dirty and that was likely my problem. I explained that during renovations we had stirred up a lot of dust. He seemed to jump on this and then for five minutes about how I needed to have my ducts cleaned and how they would love to do that job for us. I agreed that wasn't a bad idea, but that obviously wasn't going to happen today and until then I would change the filter more frequently. Then he wanted to see the furnace fire, and of course it didn't start automatically. "Good timing," I said, "now you can see what is wrong." The tech explained how the call had just changed from a tune up to a no-heat call and so now he wasn't going to clean it. "But that's likely the reason it didn't fire," I insisted rather vigorously , "It needs to be cleaned and tuned up and it will be fine." "This system is so old it need to be replaced." the tech replied, "Nothing really I can do." My blood was starting to boil, I'm thinking that I know it's old, but not that old. "Well yeah, that would be nice, but not this year. After moving and renovation I don't have the money for a new system, so this one has to get me through the winter." He pointed to a safety switch, a draft sensor, that was wired into place and was connected with an alligator clip. I said, "Well then, replace it." He didn't have the part on his truck and would need to order it. "Well then, get on with the cleaning, see what else needs to be fixed and make a list." He couldn't as the furnace was broken and needed to be replaced." I flipped the safety switch on the outside off then on and the furnace fired right up. "I have to do that about once or twice a week, but it runs fine" He shrugged and looked confused and asked what I expected him to do.. Well the next ten minutes were a bit of a blur as I was really frustrated at this point. I do remember asking him what he would do on a tune-up call and he said 'clean it, check the gas pressure, see what was needed to get it through the winter" And if there was somthing that needed to be replaced I asked? Well you get charged extra for parts he stated, but I would replace it. And if it wasn't on your truck I prompted. Write it down and come out and replace it later he replied. I said "Sounds like a proper procedure to me, let's get started." He didn't do anything except turn the furnace off and take some pictures of the sensor wired in place and then went out to his truck to talk to the office. About ten minutes later he comes back in and hands me his call sheet, which said "System has no heat, System is working but is bypassed safety switches, System is unsafe to run in current conditions. I recommend system be replaced" I paid my $99 and made my apologies for my frustrated temper. I then went downstairs, put in the new filter I had handed him at the beginning of the call and turned the furnace back on as the how was getting a bit cold. All in all this was a VERY frustrating experience. If this was a 'no-heat' call then why was it scheduled for a week later? Why the last minute call to change it from a cleaning/tune-up to a no-heat. The sales pitch about duct cleaning I expected, but the insistence that there was nothing that could be done to the 'ancient' system and it needed to be replaced was totally unwarranted. Especially after I said I would love to next year but just didn't have the money this year. And then the run around as the technician stalled and delayed and never actually did one bit of work except pull the old filter. He didn't even put a new one in!! And then the bit about bypassed safety switches and unsafe to run. The safety switches were NOT bypassed, indeed the safety switches worked properly to shut down the system and keep it off until it was manually reset by flipping the power. So now I have to go find another HVAC company to clean my furnace and replace the draft sensor with the busted mounting tab and get me through the winter until I can afford to change out the system next summer.
Description of Work: Was supposed to be a Seasonal tune up and cleaning for gas furnace that occasionally failed to fire properly.

Wow, I'm not really sure how to respond to all of that. I'm sorry this customer had an unsatisfactory experience. When [member name removed] originally called, he stated that he had to go down and manually start the furnace. So, we scheduled that as a service call to repair the problem. The customer then wanted things handled as a tune up under a service agreement. Our technician reported bypassed safety controls and the equipment in deteriorated condition. A cleaning and tune up would not put the furnace into safe operation for the winter and repairs would have been extensive. Our technician then recommended shutting down the equipment, which the customer was not pleased to hear. We have responsibility for not only proper repairs, but the safety of our customers.

Called O'Brien for a quote on replacing an oil furnace and central A/C system. Appointment was make quickly and easily. Ron called the day of the appointment as he was early to make sure it was fine to come by early which it was. He spent a total of 5-7 minutes in the house looking at the systems needing replacement and left. Asked only one or two questions of immaterial nature. A few days later I received a hand written estimate on a pre-printed form listing two options. The quote only listed model numbers so I had to research what was being quoted, tonnage, type of unit (single speed vs. variable speed, etc.). I had 4 quotes done in total, and apples to apples they were 10-15% higher for similar systems with less efficiency. If you are dead set on a Lennox system, I might call them but, honestly, I would look for another Lennox dealer who gave me a more in depth quote with explanations about replacements rather than just model numbers and a check the box pre-printed form. Estimates ranged from $7,559 to $7,935 for the lowest end oil furnaces and lowest end central A/C neither of which would meet current federal tax credit or PECO energy rebates which I did mention in conversing to Ron. Also, no financing options were disclosed like with the other quotes I received. Update: I appreciate the provider taking the time to provide a response, One thing that I wish to point out though is that they are the only company I called that provided a pre-printed form listing only the model numbers. Everyone else supplied model numbers and the detailed explanation of what that model was (2.5 ton 16 SEER, 85% efficiency single speed, etc.). That combined with the check the box pre-printed form screamed "too busy or too lazy to take the time" to me. Sorry, but that's the message I got when I saw the form so, in my opinion, you might want to rethink the form and how it's completed.

First of all, I appreciate the member giving us the opportunity to submit a price on their proposed job and I apologize that we did not apparently live up to their expectations. Since I wasn't present, I can't comment on the questions that were asked. I would anticipate a representative being in a home for longer than the amount of time stated regardless of the difficulty level of the job. I'm glad that options were listed, but disappointed that a full explanation was not apparently provided. I do know that many of our customers have ongoing discussions with our representatives detailing product features and options available. My concern is that without a description or discussion, we may not have provided "apples for apples" what the customer was looking to have done. We pride oursselves on custom solutions to meet the individual customer's needs and that does not appera to have happened in this instance. I will be certain to discuss this with the representative involved to ensure a customer experience more in line with our expectations.

They are very punctual, and they call me to schedule the preventive maintenance, which is a great time-saver. The couple of times I have had problems, they came out the same day to repair the problems. Since the new system has been in, there has been no need for emergency service. Their pricing was in the same range as other people from whom I received quotes, and they were straightforward in terms of what my house needed - did not try to sell me a more powerful system than was needed. The installation was done painlessly. All in all, very good quality, responsive, polite.

I'm very sorry that this member was disappointed with our service to him. I have followed up to discuss this with the employee involved. After surveying the situation, he did indeed quote a price before leaving. It was his impression at that time that our charges to perform the service discussed were not aligned with the member's expectations of what the job would entail. Therefore, he did not proceed to the next step of providing all of the information in a written proposal. My apologies for the misunderstanding.

The service person was very professional. Unfornately I needed a new thermometer and wound up having to have a new one installed. Although I wasn't counting on spending the money for a digital thermometer, in hindsight i'm glad I did.
Description of Work: I have used O'Brien's since I bought my house in 1999. In that time they have done my yearly cleaning, replaced my central air system (the one they replaced was installed in 1985), and replaced the striker on the new system. The have always been professional and I have recommended them to friends who needed any heating or air condition work. They even worked around their schedule to do a cleaning because I had just got out of the hospital and they worked around me. That's good customer service.

Due to the busy season for heating repairs, I was happy that O'Brien could schedule a service call today. The appointment was moved up from 2pm to 10:30am due to a cancellation. Adam and Tim showed up right on time. I was somewhat concerned about the costs since both units went down and I recently had to spent about $1,000 for plumbing problems (main drain). Thankfully that O'Brien was able to get my heating units up and running for $150. Adam and Tim were very professional and courteous. This may not be end of the story. Adam pointed out to me that a stuck blower motor might be a sign for a new motor, which would cost $500. Adam found the short wire, but couldn't run a new wire today, which would cost $490; however, he was able to get the electiric backup working so my family could have heat.

Our overall experience with O'Brien was great! The initial repairman who came out to our house said that they could not service our boiler because it was installed by the homeowner and certain aspects of the installation were not up to code. Since he walked away from the job (we understood why he did...), we contacted O'Brien again for a quote on the installation of a new boiler. When another O'Brien representative came to our house for this purpose, we were plesantly surprised the hear that he did in fact believe that our 2 year old boiler could be repaired. This representative also gave us his cell phone number if we had additional questions before deciding to proceed with the repair. We did decide to hire O'Brian, so after the necessary parts were ordered, the same representative came back to complete the repairs. He and his partner were very knowledgable and professional. They arrived on time (10 minutes early, actually!) and worked diligently for 3 hours. When they left our house my boiler was repaired and the area where they worked was cleaner than when they arrived!
Description of Work: O'Brien Heating & A/C came to our home to repair our Weil & Mclain boiler. The service included replacement of various parts, an annual maintenance kit, the installation of an exterior sensor and drainage pump, and reprograming of the boiler's computer. I also purchased a service package/waranty from O'Brien.

O'Brien came for the annual service to my heater. I needed a new expansion tank that they told me would cost $472.00 to replace, another company replaced it for $40.00. Then they told me that there was a rusted pipe in the boiler that couldn't be extracted and that I would need a new boiler. They left me a price of $6700.00. Of course they said that was with my regular customer discount. I called another company in who replaced the expansion tank and fixed the boiler (that pipe that couldn't be extracted came right out) all for a few hundred dollars thereby saving me over $6000.00 from what O'Brien wanted to charge me. I find this very dishonest and would avoid using O'Brien for anything in the future.

I'm sorry to hear that Member was unhappy with our recommendation, but don't believe this merits a grade of "F". The customer has a maintenance agreement with our company and this was a routine fall maintenance call. At that time, in addition to the boiler being cleaned and safety checked for the season, a leak was found on the expansion tank. When we returned to install a new tank agreed to by the customer, enough heavy corrosion was found on the connecting piping that we felt proceeding would put the boiler at risk. No charge was made at that time, however, an estimate was submitted for a replacement of the approximately 20 year old boiler. There were no charges made beyond the previously purchased maintenance agreement. Due to the age and condition, despite whatever repair was made by another contractor, our recommendaton would be the same as made originally.
