Joined Angie's list on Friday morning. Sent emails out through Angie's list. Received an email back that day - Mark happened to be in the area. He was at my house by 4 pm. Gave us an estimate and said he thought he might be able to fit me in within the next two weeks. On Monday morning, he was here. By Tuesday, the project was complete and I felt terrible that he didn't get paid bc I was at parent-teacher conferences. My neighbors and friends were all told to wait until spring to have their chimneys fixed so I am grateful this worked out bc this fireplace is defintely a source of heat for us in the winter.
Description of Work: Water had been pouring down our chimney into our gas fireplace during all the rains this year.

Only provided estimate.Price was very competative and estimate was typed, specific as to work to be done and materials to be used. I chose another AL provider who also has a VG rating, is local and provided a competative bid.I got a good vibe from this provider and would consider them for future work if needed.

I approved his quote Tuesday morning, the bricks were delivered late Wednesday, the masonry cutting saw and scaffolding on Thursday, and they started working that Friday. I was impressed that even though it rained most of that following week, they still showed up to work everyday to complete the job quickly. I believe that they finished up that Thursday, and received the final bill for the job Friday. While the scaffolding was up, I had also asked him if he could do a few other repairs. I never even asked him for a price to do the additional work, for some reason I just trusted him. When the bill came, he only had charged me about $300 for the extra work, which I thought was an excellent price. There was a minor issue on a small section of the project which I asked him about when I got the bill. He told me not to worry about it, that he would take care of it. That Monday the scaffolding was back up, and he was was personally out there correcting a small problem that was done by his crew. No questions asked, he immediately fixed it himself. Needless to say, I was exteremely pleased with his service. He did everything he said he would do, on or before when he said that he would have it done. He was very professional, honest and sincere. I have lived in my house for about 16 years, and being that my house is 115 years old, I have hired many contractors during that time. He is the only one that I would have the confidence to recommend to anybody. I will be having him do additional work for me in the near future.
Description of Work: Mark really helped me out of a jam after Hurricane Irene damaged my house. A tree blew into the top facade of my 3-story brick Victorian home built in 1895. It caused a partial colapse of the the front, sending a ton of bricks from 40 feet up, down to the sidewalk below. It needed immediate attention due to it was just a matter of time before more of it collapsed. I called him that Sunday after the storm and he called me back the same day. He came out on Monday to look at it and I had a quote that night. I can't say for sure if it was a good price or not, as he was only one out of two of five contractors who called me back, and the only one who would even come out to actually look at it. To me it sounded reasonable for emergency service and since that my bricks were not a standard size or color. Although he said that they might end up having to special order custom bricks, which would be much more expensive and take a lot of time he would try to find something close. He immediately went on a search for the bricks and found a fairly good color match, but they were not the right size. He said that they could cut each brick down to size in order to match the old ones, which they did.

I arranged for Mark to come out and give me an estimate for rebuilding my crumbling chimney above the roofline along with some tuck pointing work about two feet blow the roofline. Mark showed up right on time. He was very personable and professional and told me he would send me the estimate via email. However, I never heard from him again. He never sent me the estimate. I'm not sure what he saw that made him decide that he didn't want to do the work. I fully described what I needed done on the phone before he came out. Why waste your time coming out if you are not even going to give a quote?

The work done was perfect. Frankly, it looked a lot better than I thought it would. His crew was quite friendly and showed a stoic demeanor when our and the neighbors children got and quot;curiousand quot;. :) They were aware of keeping what is messy work as clean as possible. They made efforts to not cause any more disruption than was necessary. Given the rough weather we had locally of late, I was pleasantly surprised that he did not call to reschedule me, as my project was surely a smaller one for him. What else can I say? The work was great, at a good price. I would highly recommend Mr. Pawling to anyone in need of the services he provides.
Description of Work: Front porch/landing area was CBS construction that needed repaired. Mr. Pawling and crew demoed the first layer and replaced it with a new layer of block and stucco.

We have dealt with 4 masons, a roofer, and a leak expert and each had told us a different "solution", but no one had solved the issue until Mark. I am so impressed with his determination and kindness especially without charging us a penny. If we ever have a masonry issue in the future he is at the top of our list!
Description of Work: Mark came out on a Sunday to do a free estimate for some repointing around our bay window that has had a leak for the past 2 months. Although it was just a free estimate, Mark wasted no time climbing a ladder and using a garden hose, sprayed different areas of the house to determine the location of the leak. After about an hour of testing and retesting to make sure, we finally found the source of the leak. Unfortunately it was a roof issue (even though the roof had been replaced a month ago [do not use Garrison Roofers]) so we cannot hire Mark.

Mark is very personable and professional and I could tell he takes great pride in his work. Even though the job was a little more involved than he expected, he had no problem returning the following day to complete it (he didn't have any problem going to where the work is, even if it was over an hour away). The patched wall looks great and I could tell he and his associate Kham did a great job. I am intending to hire him again for other brick related projects around the house. Highly recommended!
Description of Work: Mark repointed a 2' x 12' area of an external wall on my house that gets little sun and doesn't dry out well; I was getting water in my house that was causing damage to walls and ceilings. He also replaced a few bricks that had worn. (The property is nearly 100 years old). Additionally, Mark repointed a few spots that were not in his original scope of work, without additional charge.

Mark was very responsive from the very beginning of the estimating process. I submitted an email request through Angie's List, and he contacted me the same day. We were not able to connect in person to review the work due to scheduling conflicts, so I explained the issues to Mark and he independently visited the house and proceeded to provide an estimate. I asked him to quote three distinct repair jobs separately, which he did without issue. His pricing was fair, so I had him complete all three jobs. I had questions about his methods of repair, and without hesitation, he provided me with thorough answers. Once the work was scheduled, his crew proceeded with the work. Outside of having their gear and equipment on site, you hardly knew they were there. The work took about three weeks to complete, but I suspect it took longer that it normally would primarily because it rained about two of every three days during that period. Overall the job is well done. I am particularly impressed with the repair of the concrete porch, where portions of it had begun to crumble and deteriorate after decades of water pouring on it from a roof above. I was not sure if and how this could be fixed, and Mark made it look easy.

Prior to the start of construction, Mark came to our property by appointment two times -- took measurements and discussed with us options for construction. As with all outside construction projects, weather was always a challenge and resulted in some reschedulings; however, Mark generally kept us informed of his schedule as adjustments occurred. Mark employed one masonry helper for this job. Both Mark and his helper were respectful of our property. We would not hesitate to call on Mark Pawling for masonry or construction services in the future.
Description of Work: Installed pavers on new concrete patio base in back yard (19' x 14.5'). Installed pavers for new sidewalk along back of house (32 inches wide and 34 feet long). Removed all residual from old patio construction. Installed one regular basement window well and one egress window with exit system and thermal cover. Re-formed swale and topsoil adjacent to new patio for proper drainage. Placed downspouts in patio area underground for better appearance and enhanced drainage. Repaired patch of asphalt, strip of vinyl siding.

Mark looked at our job back in mid-summer and sent us a quote within days. We previously had gotten a couple other estimates from other contractors that were much higher, and given the positive reviews we saw on Angie's List, we hired Mark as soon as we saw the estimate. He put us on his schedule but it took until early October to get to us. October was a month later than Mark had originally projected...and we had to reach out to him a couple weeks after the original target date had passed... but these things rarely happen as promised the first time, so we didn't worry about it. Once they started, it took a couple days to demo the old porch. A couple weeks later they returned to begin installing the new brick. That took a few days, then there was a break of a couple weeks while waiting for the railing to get refinished. Once that was done, they returned to finish some mortar work and install the railing. We were very happy with the results, especially for the price. Mark was great to work with and I would recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Mark removed our aging, crumbling brick front porch and steps and rebuilt it all with new bricks that matched the house better than the originals. He also took on having our custom wrought iron railing sandblasted and powder-coated. When he was done reinstalling it, it looked like new. The porch and steps are L-shaped, with a landing half way up at the turn. The 4 lower steps are 5 feet wide and the 3 upper steps are 8 feet wide.

Mark was responsive to my initial call. Though I routinely got his voice mail, he returned calls within a few hours. He came to see job and was prompt and professional. We'd had other estimates and it was clear he understood the immediate job and how to prevent future problems with moisture affecting the brick steps. He emailed a written estimate within 48 hours. Although his wasn't the lowest estimate, his track record and evident experience lead us to select him for the job. Although he was backed up when we called, he agreed to fit in our small job before an upcoming family event. I wasn't present when he came to work, so I saw nothing but the finished results. His work was meticulous, and the steps looked better than new. I thought he was going to remove and replace the existing bricks. Instead he used new brick and matched as closely as possible. He pointed up several areas as needed, and got new caulk to insure that the seal against the house was watertight. The area was left clean and he arranged a rope to keep us off the steps for the first day. Overall I was delighted with having the work done without needing to worry or even to be home. I'd hire him again without hesitation.

Initial call for quote was responded to quickly, professionally, and with real courtesy. Even with erratic weather in Fall, 2009, work began promptly and efficiently. Mark's crew was friendly, neat, hard-working and committed to quality AND timely work. Mark coordinated stucco colors and texture with house paint that had been chosen for new painting. Despite severe weather, work was completed and graded post-excavation, in a very satisfactory manner, especially given sudden cold. In spring, due to the extreme winter, there were some problems with cracking of stucco; but I believe this demonstrates what a professional Mark is. All work was scraped and redone with material with lower temperature range, still coordinating stucco color, to avoid any future problems. Mark was good-humored and reassuring, even with this problem that was completely beyond his control. Throughout the job, he suggested options: reuse of existing block, new block or other materials and it was so good to find someone who has the environmental consciousness to offer reuse of materials. Regrading the hill for the stairway and better drainage to protect the wall was done, along with reseeding, to leave the landscape in better condition for a lasting wall than it had been previously. Many neighbors still stop to compliment the walls and the paver stairway. Am looking forward to having Mark put in a paver walkway and possibly "green" paver driveway. Couldn't be happier with the experience of working with him and recommend him unconditionally.

My meeting with Mark was pleasant and professional. He knows well about his trade and I have every confidence he can do the job well. The only reason I awarded the job to the other contractor is because the other contractor is local from the Baltimore County and is MHIC licensed.
Description of Work: I contacted Mark by phone and we arranged to meet in my house, job location. He came promptly at 7:30 AM the following day. He inspected the old chimney and determined and described in detail what needs to be done to rebuild it from the ground - tear down the old chimney, dug out the old foundation, pour a new foundation etc.

Very well, very professionally, and very quickly. Mark started work on Tuesday and finished the next day on Wednesday. The work looked great. the Stucco repair was smooth with the rest of the wall and looks much better than it did before. No mess and he cleaned up afterwards. This repair was beyond my DIY capacity, and I am so thankful for Mark and his helper Colm coming to the rescue when other contractors would not take the job because it was too small for them to profit from. The house feels complete and my faith in contractors has been restored after being severely burned by DSI Enterprises in 2006. I HIGHLY recommend Mark for any work you might have to do around the house. His workmanship and skill is fantastic. I'm definitely going to ask mark to come back for some other brick work and to hopefully pave my backyard. Oh, and he has to come restore my roof cornice before the summer is out.
Description of Work: Reset headers and lintels above top floor windows of my house so that they were flush with the existing stucco. Then covered the headers and lintels with stucco to the same level as the existing stucco. Also Smoothed out stucco build-up around the windows from a patch repair that I performed months ago for an even finish.

It was an easy experience to work with Mark and his subs. I have had other work done in the past by other contractors which was a tedious and frustrating process. I would certainly recommend Mark Pawling and will use him again in the future for masonry work.
Description of Work: Mark arrived as scheduled to view the needed repairs to the exterior of my brick home. He was pleasant, professional and obviously knew his craft. The estimate for the work arrived in the mail a couple of days later and was actually somewhat lower than what I had anticipated. In addition to repointing and replacing numerous damaged brick, I had asked for estimates on repairing the tin roof over the front porch as well as waterproofing the back chimney area. I was very impressed with the thoroughness of the work that was done both by Mark himself and the sub contractors. After looking at the front roof, he told me that it didn't need major repairs, but simply needed to replace some flashing which he did at no charge.

Mark was very pleasant and responsive, and his prices were excellent. However, the condo board was a little concerned that he only spent 10 minutes looking at the property, as opposed to the 3 other masons we received estimates from, who spent from 30 minutes to an hour examining our condo building.
Description of Work: I called Mark Pawling to get estimates on 3 different masonry projects that need to be done in my condo building. He gave me those estimates, but the condo board voted to go with another mason for the first two projects. Mark Pawling Masonry is still in the running for the third project next year.

Contacted Mark for an estimate in late May; evaluated against other estimates and moved forward with work in early June. Mark and his crew showed up exactly as communicated and completed all work within a single day. The work included: repointing all mortar underneath our front window (rotted out due to leaky gutter... need to find a good gutter guy too); completely removing old chimney bricks and relaying/flashing new chimney bricks and pouring a new chimney cap (small chimney). The team did a great job installing and flashing the chimney; the roof line made it hard for them to line everything up perfectly, but the finished product looks solid. They also did good work repointing the mortar under the window. The old mortar was not easy to match, and the colors are close (not absolutely perfect); that said, I couldn't have asked for a better match. Also, I raised one concern with Mark regarding pointing the bricks under the window sill; he immediately addressed the problem with no questions asked. I would definitely hire this group again.
