They did a fantastic job. It did take a while to do the stuff but I could not find any fault with it. They were very careful. They blocked the drywall dust entering the kitchen by installing the plastic sheet barrier. They were careful not to spread the dust as I have the lung problem. They cleaned up at the end of each day so I could fix up my dinner in the kitchen. The young men were prompt, genial and very nice. They were very professional. They took pride in their work
Description of Work: They spent several days applying several coats of layers to build up a smooth finished surface. They also painted all the cabinets, walls, ceilings and the woodworks around it. They took down the old fan from the ceiling and fixed it up with two new fixtures that I had purchased for that purpose.

We were really really happy with the results. We went from a cramped bathroom w/ original fixtures and tiles from the 1940s to a spacious and open, spa-like bath. They told us the project would take 3 weeks and it took 3 weeks. They were responsive and kept in open communication with us during the whole project. They used subcontractors who were pleasant and professional. They respected our house and our property. They gave us great suggestions as issues arose. They were on-point with their estimate.
Description of Work: They gutted our 6x8 foot bathroom on our first floor to the studs - took out three closets expanding the space to an 8x8 bathroom. Moved all of our plumbing to relocate the toilet on the opposite corner, moved the sink to the middle and pushed the tub back 2 feet. They tiled 3 walls to a chair-rail height and the 4th wall to the ceiling. they built a knee-high wall for a drop in tub and tiled around the tub and wall. They re-built the walls where the doors to the closets that were removed were once located and matched the baseboard. They installed recessed lighting and an exhaust fan. They installed recessed shelves in the shower. They also fixed the recessed shelving in our upstairs bathroom. The cost of the project was for labor and building materials, only - not the fixtures or tile.

They were here on time and did a great job. I wanted to make sure there were no mold issues, so they opened up the wall for us then repatched it along with the other work. They were clean, professional and I would certainly use them again.

The estimate was reasonable, the work was done within a week as promised, and even when the wallboard crew missed an appointment one day, they more than made up for it in following days. The crews were prompt, polite, skilled and did good cleanup. Chuck and his partner were clear in explaining what they would be doing and helped move out material in the bedroom so they could create work space.
Description of Work: Chuck McGinnis installed a walk-in closet in our bedroom, knocking out parts of the old closet to extend the space, constructing walls, painting the interior, installing new wire shelving/clothes rod, and laminating our ceiling with wallboard to cover a cracking plaster--lathe surface.

They were very nice. They were very thorough and prompt. They checked the whole basement area. So they seemed very thorough but when it came time for the estimate, and I waited for over a week and didn't hear anything. I had to call them and left a message saying I thought I was going to get the estimate and was wondering where it was. They called back and said there was a problem with somebody on their job and they'd get back to me, but didn't have the paper work. He knew what the price would be though. So they gave me the price but I thought it was way overblown so I didn't go with them.

It went great. Chuck McGinnis is always a pleasure to work with. He got back to me right away with the estimate and was able to begin work within a week of when I called him back to schedule the work. They removed the existing porch deck the first day and exposed the supporting boards that needed to be replaced. The second day they delivered the new deck wood which needed to acclimatize for a few days. When they returned, they were able to replace the supporting boards and replaced most of the deck in one day and spend a small amount of time the next day fitting the molding. A painter then painted the porch and columns, first with an oil based paint and then a latex final coat in the next day and a half. The porch is so nice it now makes the rest of the house look bad! Thanks, Chuck!
Description of Work: H&M Contracting was hired to replace my front porch deck. In addition, they need to replace some bug damaged/rotted support wood. They then painted the columns and the deck. This is the second year in a row that I have hired them.

The acoustical tile ceiling was buckling. Mr.McGinnis returned my call promptly and scheduled a meeting for the next day. Reviewed the situation completely, offered various solutions and a reasonable estimate. A time table was set. The day the work began the crew moved all furniture that I was unable to move and took down the ceiling fan. The work was completed on schedule. Care had been taken to protect everything from dirt and dust and the furniture was replaced back and the fan rehung. All workers were polite and friendly. The finished product was perfect.

Excellent. Working with Chuck was a like a breath of fresh air. He is so professional and treated my 80 year old parents like gold. He has a great sense for business and returns calls in a timely manner. It was a small job but he treated like it was as important as a big one. They squeezed us in on a Saturday morning so that we could get the job done quickly. He checked above the ceiling to be sure that mold hadn't started to develop. His knowledge and experience is evident. We will definitely hire H&M again.

Our call was returned immediately and they came to give an estimate that same day. Several days later they came to begin the work of replacing the tape on the ceilings, adding additional drywall screws and skim coating and sanding the ceilings. They covered the floors with cloths and protected the carpets and walls as they were working. They cleaned up as they went. The work was done in a timely fashion with very little disruption to our household. While this is a very dirty job, there was very little for me to personally clean up when the job was completed.
Description of Work: Drywall was put up incorrectly in two bedrooms and the hallway by another contractor. H & M repaired the previous work done and completed the job much to our satisfaction.

Jeff did a great job. He came in on a Saturday to review the work that was needed and provided suggestions. He did this as we were not free on the weekday and he wanted to make sure he could get a quote to use soon. His written quote was sent by Monday. He came to the House when he said he would and started working on the drywall and the bathroom fan. The next day he had to install the attic fan and finish off the drywall. He came back a third day to finish the closet area and tie up any loose ends. Jeff cleans up after himself and leaves no mess behind. He is very trustworthy and we even left the house to run errands on a few occasions with him still working on the project. Jeff also provided advice on a few other things around the house and during a break even fixed a leaky faucet at no charge. This company is definitely who we will call first before getting any work done. His quote was below the other quotes we received and he calls you back too while others do not.
Description of Work: We hired this company to replace an area of drywall in the kitchen ceiling. Install drywall in Master bedroom around the closet area and install a new closet organizer. Create a shelving system in order to store shoes surrounded by new dry wall. Replace Bathroom fan and vent out through attic and out of roof. Install new attic fan on roof with thermostat and humidity controls.

I have been repeatedly disappointed in contractors like this one who, after investing your and their time to look at your job, measure, discuss, etc., (which to me indicates their interest)and later refuse to give you a callback to say they're not interested, or too busy, or whatever. Even a generic form postcard saying thanks but no thanks would at least treat the potential customer with respect and let them know they need to keep looking.
Description of Work: Called them in April 2006 to look at remodeling 2 baths. Learning they were busy until August, I asked for them to visit to look at the future job and arrange for an estimate. It was early June before Chuck McGinnis came by and did that, saying he'd give us an estimate within a week. Mid-July I called to ask if he would follow through with the estimate; and if not, to please give us a referral to another reputable remodeler. I never heard back. When interviewing another remodeler that November (who ultimately did both jobs), I called Chuck once more and left a message asking if he was interested. I never heard back.

Very well. Chuck was our primary contact in planning and design. His ideas were outstanding - i.e., both practical and creative. Attentive, responsive and very easy to work with. Ultimate compliment - when in doubt about decision options, we deferred to his expert judgment and he was inevitably correct. Jaime, Chuck's partner, handled more of the day to day craftsman responsibilities very well. They were seasoned professionals, responding well to inevitable in process challenges with an 80 year old home. We doubt that anyone could top them on value: cost.
Description of Work: Complete renovation of 750 square foot unfinished basement and complete house electrical rewiring/upgrade. Phases: 1) demolition, including replacing stairs; 2) wall framing throughout basement ; 3) electrical and lighting; 4) masonry (for 8' ft sliding doors, etc); 5) plumbing (new full bath, renovated laundry room, etc.); 6) 7 doors and trim; 7) painting all walls and ceilings, trim; floor coverings - ceramic tile and Stainmaster brand carpet.

The work was excellent. The demolition proceeded first along with the removal of the knob and tube. When framing the new drywall walls, H and M did a good job filling it with the rock wool, which is unusual for typical contracting work. Some improvisation was necessary to get around pipes. The drywall was hung and painted and looked great. The next phase involved the blocking off between the joists which was done with wood and caulked. The new lights went in next including variac transformer dimmer, which needed to be specially bought. The lights and the dimmers look and work wonderfully. Last and best, Charlie McGinnis created wall and ceiling reflectors from the plans, which was detailed custom work, as they had to be two inches from the walls so that I could place sound absorbers afterward. They were painted white. There was also a little creativity needed to allow a small door to under my front porch to open and involved a removable piece of a ceiling reflector.
Description of Work: The job entailed remodeling my basement into a home recording studio. There was demolition of existing drywall, removal of existing drop ceiling and removal of knob and tube wiring. Three new walls of drywall and plywood were created with rock wool insulation. Two doors were installed. The space between the joists were blocked in with wood. The drywall was painted. New track lighting was installed including special dimmer switches. Panel reflectors (one foot wide pieces of plywood) were constructed on the walls and ceiling in the mixing room.

Excellent! Chuck and his entire team were professional, friendly, and courteous, and always delivered on time as promised. The price was right and the work was high quality. Chuck and his team always returned phone calls the same day and always arrived when he said he would. When we had trouble with a carpet wholesaler that was not even part of the project, Chuck stepped in and helped out as much as he could. The work was fairly reasonably priced and overall this was a great experience with professional workers, who seemed to take a lot of pride in their job. I will use this company again in the future.
Description of Work: Drywall was hung and finished on ceilings in 6 rooms in my 110 year old home. H & M also hung and finished drywall on all surfaces in one large guest bedroom. The workers removed baseboards and went above and beyond what I asked. I've already called Chuck back to schedule another complete re-drywall in my kitchen along with some patch and framing work. All work was completed in a very timely manner, and Chuck called frequently to check on my satisfaction with the jobs progress.
