They are based in Philadelphia. They were responsible enough to cut the trees into firewood for me. I liked their integrity. They were good for their word and respectful of my property unlike some other people. They were reasonably priced too.

Just a great experience. The best contractor I've ever dealt with - period. Ken Hutz is amazing. Imagine calling a tree service and someone actually answers the phone! A very rare occurrence, but that's how you know you're dealing with a company that is different from the others. Professionalism reigns with John B. Ward. The job was done to my satisfaction, but I have no doubt Ken would have made sure I was happy if I had a problem. You could likely find somebody who costs less, but as any homeowner knows, it's hard to put a price a company who does things right. Often "cheaper" ends up being more expensive in the long run. I already have more work contracted with Ken. And just a few weeks later Ken was back on my street working on a neighbor's tree. I don't know for sure, but I would bet that Ken earned the job from the neighbor watching Ken's crew work on my tree.

Could not have asked for better. Arrived when promised, did exactly what asked, and even had to remove a section of fence to get the stump grinder in my backyard and replaced it so well I would've never known it had happened. The foreman was exceedingly knowledgable about trees and shrubs and clearly knew exactly what he was doing in appropriately pruning my lilacs and giving me some advice on other plants. They left my property in excellent shape, and didn't even trample small plantings surrounding stumps to be ground--I suspect they lifted and replaced them. A great experience.

Came home to find both trees removed, large maple stump ground to level, sites neat and clean. Hated to take those trees down but it was long past time for the job. Ken Hutz responded quickly to my call and the whole job was performed on time without a hitch.

John looked at the job, gave us some advice about what we should and should not do, explained the specific issues with the trees in our backyard and made sensible recommendations. His price was very reasonable and he was willing to do a bit more than we asked without raising the price, because he felt it was the right thing to do. The work was done promptly and neatly. It included removing three medium size trees and stumps alongside the garage, removing a dead witchhazel in the backyard and an overgrown yew. He volunteered advice about how I should keep other trees and bushes trimmed
Description of Work: Although this work was performed over two years ago, I am submitting it now because I just joined this list. This is the most professional company, certified arborists who truly understand trees and care about landscaping that is good for the trees, the ground, the buildings and neighborhood around it. I recommend them because they are knowledgeable experts, not merely people who cut trees down.

Ken Hutz was very responsive from arranging a time to get an estimate to scheduling the work. They took the entire tree down and ground the stump in a matter of hours. They removed and moved two concrete pavement slabs to better grind the stump. They then moved the slabs back unharmed. I was concerned about damage to the porch because of the closeness to the tree to the house, but they did an exceptional job and there was no damage.

Ken Hutz answered my phone at 9:00 A.M. and had a cutting crew out by lunch time. The next day, a man arrived with a stump grinder, and Ken returned to ensure the job was done to my satisfaction. All work was done efficiently with great care not to disturb anything, and logistics were arranged to get the huge stump grinder on the premises without damaging any plants or structures. The yard was left in better condition that when they started, with great care to vacuum sawdust and re-arrange the disturbed earth. Ken thanked me multiple time for my business. We will use them again for all our tree/shrubbery needs. Ken was hugely knowledgeable about tress and shrubbery, correctly identified a number of somewhat exotic species, and offered creative advice on how to manage them.

We needed several trees removed but couldn't afford to do them all at once. They gave us a lot of advice and separate quotes for three different trees. When they came to remove the first tree, they removed a smaller dead tree that was nearby at no additional charge. We will definitely use them for the rest of the work.

Ken Hutz came out to give an estimate and arrived exactly when he said he would. He gave us advice on how to improve the condition of our trees, which had been somewhat neglected by the previous owner. Once we scheduled the work there was a delay but Ken arrived with his team promptly and the work was done in just over 3 hours. They were extremely thorough, cleaned up the yard so that my husband couldn't even tell they had been there. They even chopped up a few shrubs we had removed the previous weekend. We were really pleased with their work.

A significant storm caused damage throughout the surrounding area. I called a half a dozen companies who were unable to even talk to me. Ken Hutz was referred by a competitor. He came out the very next morning and gave an estimate. Two days later, the branch was gone and all the associated debris was gone, leaving not a leaf to show the havoc of the preceding day. I later learned that the foreman had to go chest-deep in the pool to manage the process. The bill came in $400 lower than he'd estimated.
Description of Work: Wind and rain caused half a tree to fall in our pool. They removed the huge (75 foot) branch and every single darn twig and leaf it dragged down with it.

We had a great experience with the John B. Ward Co. Their arborist, Ken Hutz, is very professional and friendly. He really impressed us on his initial visit with his knowledge about and interest in all of trees. We originally asked him to visit us because one of our giant maples was dying and dropping large branches on our lawn. We also wanted our oak pruned back from our house and our neighbors'. He took the opportunity to walk over our entire property and evaluate all of the trees. He then presented us with an estimate for removing the maple and pruning the oak along with a plan for addressing concerns with the other trees on the property. We scheduled a job that covered part of the plan, and his crew showed up on time and did a very professional job. Ken started the day with the crew to make sure they understood all the details of the job, and he returned later in the afternoon to follow up and handle some of the more delicate pruning himself. They did an excellent job cleaning up the site, and the trees looked great. The second job went just as well as the first. Ken's crew was thorough, professional, and left our yard looking better than when they arrived. They even did a much better job hanging several of our wind chimes for us after removing them for pruning work (Ken had better wire and eye hooks with him for the job). As part of the job, they had to remove a section of our neighbors' fence. They took it down and replaced without any problems whatsoever. Our neighbors were very pleased with the work between our houses and even hired the crew on the spot to do some additional work in their yard. I really can't recommend John B. Ward and Ken Hutz any higher. They provided a fair estimate for the work, worked with us on a convenient schedule, showed up on time, and did a thoroughly professional job.
Description of Work: Work done was spread over two jobs. Originally, a dying silver maple was removed, and stump ground. Two other small maples were pruned. A very large oak was cleaned up (cut back from our house and the neighbors' and dead branches removed throughout), and the dead branches in a very large pine tree were pruned out. An additional stump was ground out, too. They also cleaned up a brush pile for us. This all cost $2,700.00. The second job included cabling and pruning a large mulberry over our garage, doing a bit of additional work on our oak and pine in order to provide more light for our magnolia and dogwood, pruning the magnolia, and removing two medium sized trees on the side of our house (one dead and one overhanging the roof in a dangerous way). Additional pruning was done on a number of trees between our house and another neighbors' to prevent branches from rubbing the roof and siding. This work was $3,100.00. At the end of both jobs, they left (at our request) the leftover wood chips from all the shredding for our use as mulch.

Ken Hutz came out promptly and gave a detailed estimate. He gave a very fair estimate to prune crabapple and Japanese maple. Large Japanese holly and cypress, crown clean and prune large cedar, crown clean and restoration prune another Japanese maple, reduction prune and restoration prune a large firethorn, reduction prune mature burning bush, crown clean and prune huge black oak and remove all vines. He advised me to wait a year to do large elm. Ken impressed me most for his reverence and knowledge of each tree/shrub/plant, and the thoroughness and specificity with which he would do the work. I had too many estimates, so chose one who could come sooner as I planned to install a fence.

It went very well. The work was done quickly and all debris was cleaned up. After the work was complete, the arborist (Ken) called to ask if I was pleased with the work. He answered my questions and explained why certain things were done the way they were. Ken indicated he would inspect the tree sometime during the winter. I was also told to give them a call after severe storms to have them come out and inspect the tree.
Description of Work: We had three large Cedars and one Blue Spruce removed and the stumps ground. We also had an old (ca. 95 years) Horse Chestnut pruned and cables installed to help stabilize the tree. Four old stumps were also ground. While they were there, they found another stump and ground it down for us. All debris was removed and the yard cleaned with a leaf blower.

They were very professional. It cost less than friends with similar storm-related emergency experiences.
Description of Work: A 125 foot tree fell on July 4th. I called to leave a message that day, and 10 minutes later Jim Ward was already returning my call to make certain we had a safe situation first and then to set up removal arrangements. The entire canopy of the tree was so expertly and carefully lifted from a large garden bed. It's incredible that no plants were seriously damaged, and most were completely unscathed so they stood back up fully in the next rain!

This company is very prompt & professional. They keep their word & do their work well. The large tree that they removed came down without a hitch & when they were done, the stump was also gone. It's as if there had never been a tree there at all. The other trees were carefully trimmed & the debris removed. Other than a few branches falling onto our roof, I have no complaints with the work. Of course, this type of company doesn't come inexpensively, but the cost was well worth it.

JIM WARD WAS PROMPT AND PROFESSIONAL, ANSWERED ALL MY QUESTIONS COMPLETELY, OFFERED HELPFUL ADVICE, DELIVERED ESTIMATE ON TIME. WORKERS ARRIVED AS SCHEDULED, WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL AND ACCOMMODATING. ALL WORK WAS DONE EXACTLY AS I HAD REQUESTED. THEY EVEN HAULED AWAY SOME BRANCHES FROM MY OWN TREE PRUNING EFFORTS FREE OF CHARGE. ON A PREVIOUS JOB WHERE THEY REMOVED THREE BIG PINE TREES, I HAD TO LOWER THE GRADE ABOUT 10 INCHES TO IMPROVE DRAINAGE. THAT EXPOSED SOME PREVIOUSLY BURIED ROOTS FROM THE TREES THEY HAD REMOVED. JIM SENT SOMEONE OUT WITH A STUMP GRINDER TO REMOVE THE NEWLY-EXPOSED ROOTS FOR FREE. I'M A VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER.
