The technician performed the job as well as anyone. I was unhappy, however, with his attempt to sell me a high-cost, specialty carbon monoxide detector by scaring me into thinking my current detectors were somehow ineffective. He made a big show of checking the labels of my detectors and saying that he didn't think they were sensitive enough, when in fact all CO detectors are standardized. He of course knew this. While performing the evaluation he also stuck William Henderson stickers on my hot water heater and air conditioning unit, neither of which he serviced or checked. The tech also said we had restricted air to the furnace and that would reduce the life of the furnace because of possible overheating of the exchanger. He proposed installing a wider, deeper return air drop and turning boot--for about $2,400. I brought in a tech from a different company for a second opinion who said that there was no problem with the air flow.
Description of Work: Evaluated air flow from vents . Also hooked the humidifier back up to the furnace.

Response from Wm. Henderson Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Inc.
We are trained through the National Comfort Institute and follow their guidelines regarding CO monitors. We sell low level monitors (not CO detectors), which are different from the home center models - they are very sensitive, and are manufactured to respond to levels of CO that are much lower than a standard detector would respond to. As far as the duct work, we also follow the guidelines of the National Comfort Institute, and make recommendations based on these guidelines. This customer contacted us to have the air flow evaluated, as he was having issues with uneven heating between the up and downstairs. The second company he hired may not have followed the same strict guidelines as we do. It's also possible that this customer is still having the issues he originally called for, since he states the second company did not do any work to improve air flow.

The job was done quickly and professionally. I noticed that a main sewage pipe in my basement was leaking substantially every time I used our kitchen sink so I called Henderson for an estimate. They scheduled me for an afternoon window visit but then called back within the hour to say a plumber could come then due to another cancellation. I was very grateful they did that. When the plumber came, he could see right away what the problem was and wrote up a quote. Although the estimate was higher than I hoped, I gave the OK to proceed since I have used Henderson in the past several times and know they provide quality service. The plumber estimated about 3-3.5 hours for the job but finished within 2.5 hours so the total was decreased. I'm pleased with the results and the professionalism that every Henderson plumber brings to the job.

They are great. They came out when I needed them in an emergency, when I couldn't get anybody else out here. The hot water heater is still under warranty, and I like that. You can depend on them, and they are reliable.

I always get a bit of water in my basement during heavy storms, but usually no more than an inch. During a particularly heavy storm, I heard gushing water in my basement. It was coming from outside so when I investigated I saw that the ground near my sump pump outtake pipe had eroded so the water was pouring back into my basement. I called Henderson for an emergency visit because the water was at least 5 or 6 inches deep in the basement. Two Henderson plumbers arrived within an hour of my call. They were very polite and got right to work pumping out the water and adding a PVC extension pipe to my sump outtake so the water was moved away from the home. They were very professional, polite and patient with the job (despite standing in pouring down rain for much of the call). Henderson is not the least expensive plumber you can call, by far, but they always do excellent work so you do get what you pay for with them.

They suggested that the soil line needed to be videoed in order to diagnosis the problem. There was a week delay in order for them to have availability to come out to do this. Dan McCarthy came out to do this. He videoed the line, charging $375. I should note I was very upset at the time due to wetness in the basement. Dan was neither sympathic nor comforting. When I asked him if I could appyl the Angies coupon, he said no because I did not have it printed out. I guess it would have been great if he wasn't so cold but not the primary issue I had with them. Two calls the following week to WH Henderson with no response. Julie confirmed they were scheduling about 10 days out but never scheduled me. I called to get Dan to give me addl details about what the videoing had revealed (two times) and never received a call back. I had the work done approximately 10 days after the videoing by another plumber. I should note that the plumber did not indicate the line needed to be videod in order for him to fix the problem (Larry Ullman fixed the line). I had the cartridge and faucet work done by David McGoldrick who was smart enough to advise me that the faucet was under warranty saving me $400. I should note Brian from WH Henderson did not mention the warranty. In addition, each of Larry and David charged far less than WH Henderson. I complained and asked for a refund for the videoing charge. I received a phone call back from Mike Henderson who did refund me all but 65 dollars of the charge. I appreciate Mike taking time to call me back and make the refund relatively straightforward. If you use them for big jobs, you may want to lock them down as to when they will have availability to fix it especially if it is an emergency problem. I think they viewed this as a job that could span over a couple of weeks or a month. I wanted it done in a week or two as there was a leak dripping into my basement. In my mind, there is no point to having them come out, charging you to diagnose the problem but then having no availability to fix it for weeks. Also, I think they would even admit that they charge more than the single man operations. They said it was because they have 24/7 availability and high tech equipment. Great, if you need those services. I did not. I needed someone to fix my stack efficiently and without a lot of fanfare.
Description of Work: I called them to quote out work for replacement of faucet head, replacement of cartridge in shower and crack in stack/soil line of house that was leaking in the basement.

We were called twice to this customer’s property. On the first visit, on April 25th, Brian was out to investigate a complaint of a leak from a trap. He gave the customer pricing to replace a cartridge for the 2nd fl shower faucet, replace the kitchen faucet, and to video a drain line by removing the toilet in the powder room. The customer was not charged a diagnostic fee for this visit. She called us on Tuesday, April 29th, informing us that she already had the faucet work completed by a different company, but they could not do the video. She scheduled the video to be completed that Friday, May 2nd. Dan arrived on May 2, and was able to use a brand new camera that allowed him to run the video through the toilet, thereby saving the customer the $207 cost to remove the toilet. She was charged the price Brian quoted to complete the video inspection, $378.00. Dan found that the stack needed to be replaced, and gave her an estimate to complete the stack replacement. He informed the customer that he would provide a breakdown of the estimate (which she requested) if she provided us with a deposit to complete the work. The customer did call to follow up on this estimate, and Dan returned her call. He did not receive an answer. This customer is correct, our pricing is higher than some very small, one-man plumbing companies, and the reasoning she lists is correct as well – we have the staff and availability to be available 24/7, and we have the equipment (like the camera that goes through a toilet) to provide accurate diagnosis. This customer also notes that the company she had complete the stack work did not need the video camera. This is because we had already diagnosed the issue. She used our company TWICE to diagnose her issues, and then used less expensive companies to complete the work. She then requested a refund of the video work. In the end, she paid $65 for 2 separate trips, and extensive diagnosis. It is our position that she never intended to have our company do the work, but wanted a solid diagnosis before paying a less expensive company to make repairs at her rental property.

They were quick to respond. They had someone out same day. However I had a leak around the wax ring in a toilet and was charged $315 for 45 min of work and maybe $25 of supplies (just a wax ring). He told me upfront but by that point I was already on the hook for the $65 service call so what can I really do. He was very knowledgeable and he showed me how the previous contractor had incorrectly installed the toilet. I just can't stomach the cost, most expensive 45 minutes of my life. I wanted to give a better grade but seriously this should of been half the cost. I mentioned Angie's list and I didn't get the coupon. They called me back to talk about the experience and said they would look into the cost. Dan, the plumber who actually came out also called me back and they offered to refund the Angies list coupon amount. I had to put this back up at A because of the great customer service. Cost still a little high but I guess you get what you pay for.
Description of Work: Take up toilet , replace wax ring, put toilet back, some customization due to incorrect work by previous contractor.

I called at noon on a Saturday because I had just found water in the basement. An hour later Brian was at my house. He figured out that the sewer pipe was clogged between the trap outside the house and the road. He successfully plunged the pipe. Another employee from this company will come out next week to give an estimate on cleaning the pipe so it won't clog again. The plumber was professional and I was pleased with the speed of the response and work performed.

I woke up one morning to a flood in the basement, which was the water heater, and I wasn't sure who to call, so I got on Angie's List, and their name popped up. I also saw their name somewhere else and I thought that they are 3 miles away from here, and if nothing else, then I can get it done today. Which I did. I got it taken care of. The service was exceptional, the price was absolutely, astoundingly expensive. I was kind of annoyed because I called to complain about the pricing after I had spoken to friends, and I spoke with someone there, and he said that the manager was not there, and he would have him call me back today or tomorrow. I never heard anything from them since them. I since then read an article from Angie's List saying how you will find a huge range of prices especially when it comes to hot water heaters. I did complain, but at the end of the day they had it done, and it was no big deal. The only thing I had a complaint about was them not getting back to me. They left a bad taste in my mouth, and so I wouldn't use them if I can help it.

We are very glad you were happy with our service. We pride ourselves on being able to help customers in emergency situations. The work described above was actually completed on January 4, 2014, which was a Saturday. The cost to replace your water heater is based upon the fact that you requested emergency weekend service and that we only use American-made Bradford White water heaters. We hope you will consider working with us again.

We had a small pothole forming near the curb in front of our house, and the township insisted we have our sewer line checked for leaks before they would fix it. We had William Henderson Plumbing & Heating come out and take a look to give us a free estimate. I was a little annoyed at first because I took time off of work to meet with someone (their page on Angie's List says they have weekend hours, which is actually one reason I chose them, but that is only for emergencies), but all he did was spend five minutes to hear my problem and then offer to schedule someone to come out and do a video survey of the sewer line for about $200. Since I had already mentioned what I thought the problem might be on the phone, this seemed a waste of time to me - they could have just scheduled the video inspection initially. But I agreed to it because I knew it had to be done. It was not required that I took more time off to meet the other guy when he came out to do the video inspection (they run a camera in the sewer line to see how it looks), but I chose to do so because I wanted to know what was going on. He took a look and determined the trap near the curb had separated from the rest of the pipe. Otherwise he said the rest of it looked almost like the day it was installed, even though it was over 50 years old (probably because there are no trees in my front yard, so no pipe-damaging roots). He let me look at the camera to see the broken trap, which was tough for my untrained eyes to make out but I trusted his explanation of what I was seeing. And it made sense since the pothole had been getting worse and the broken trap was near it. So I had him give me an estimate for the work to repair it. There was a bit of sticker shock at the $4000 price tag since he had said it would be extremely expensive to dig in the street, but then told me they shouldn't have to do that for my job. But I guess even without that it wasn't going to be cheap. I just knew you could get a whole line replaced for maybe double the cost, and I was only getting a small part fixed. I agreed to have it done but then called a couple days later to clarify why it was so much, and they told me a majority of the cost for any sewer work is just getting the equipment out there and doing the initial labor. Plus the location of my trap and the need to remove part of the sidewalk made it a little more difficult. I accepted this and let them do the work as planned. They did also inform me that because of the broken trap, they were unable to inspect the line further out into the street, so they would do that when they repaired it and then let me know if there were any other problems. I was not present when PJ and his partner came out and did the actual job but they spoke to my wife afterwards. They let her know they took pictures to document the work and it would be on file in their office, just in case the township tried to claim they or we caused any other damage, like to the main sewer line in the street. They did the video inspection and said the rest of our line in the street was fine (so they didn't try to cheat me into getting unnecessary work done). They also said they didn't find any large amounts of water around the break and weren't sure the water company's recent upgrades to the water line, which was right next to the sewer line, weren't responsible for the pothole. They were going to contact the water company to look into it but I never heard back about that. They put in a new vent, which was near the trap, and also moved it back a bit from the curb (the old one was up against it) as a precaution in case anyone ever drove up over the curb - if they did and their tire sat on the vent they could push it down and break the pipe. They replaced all the dirt they had removed and covered it with hay (too late in the season to plant grass). So overall I think the quality of their work was good and I felt a little better about probably paying more than I might have with another company, since they did a thorough job, including documentation. However, when I got home I noticed the new vent they put in was much larger than the old one (larger diameter). That wouldn't be a problem except it was also sticking at least half a foot above the level of the grass, so it was very tall and obtrusive. The old one was so flat I could run my mower over it. I don't mind it being slightly raised so I'd have to mow around it, but this one was much higher than any vent I've ever seen in any yard. I called them to ask them to lower it and they said they would send someone out, but since this was the week before Thanksgiving I knew it wouldn't happen too soon. Then, about 5 days later after we had some rain, I noticed two gaping holes near the vent where a majority of the dirt either settled and/or washed away, including a large hole underneath the sidewalk. So now I was worried the sidewalk might crack since it didn't have full support. I called again after Thanksgiving (especially since I had never heard back from my previous call) and they promised to have someone come out a few days later (the earliest time they had available). They did come out and lowered the trap to ground level and replaced the dirt. However, when they went to fill in the pothole with some asphalt, they discovered a large void under the street. They called the borough and had someone come look at it before they left (I appreciated PJ staying there until the person came out). Through repeated phone calls with the borough and William Henderson and an inspection by the water company over the next few weeks, it was determined that the water line was not leaking but the cause of the pothole and void were still unknown for certain. The borough asked if PJ could speak to their engineer to give them more details. I think they wanted to be sure there were no other leaks in the sewer line. PJ was happy to help but was going in for surgery, so he told me to call the main office, and they said it would be no problem to call the engineer. Over the course of the next few months, my borough kept insisting I needed to pay for the full repair of the street. I wanted to see the pictures PJ had taken to see if there was any evidence of what was causing the void, but I found out he only had the pictures on his phone and they were not sent to the office, so it took some time to get them, which bothered me a little as I thought he said they would be on file in the office. But during this time Henderson backed me up because they didn't think the street void was all my fault. They came out to do a test by flushing water into the void to see if it entered the main sewer line. They needed to open up the manhole covers at the ends of my block but both were paved over with asphalt. They took the time (along with the borough engineer) to chisel away and get it open. Unfortunately the one they opened was a dead line, and they couldn't get the other cover off after trying for half an hour. Finally the borough agreed to have a video line run through the main sewer line, which ultimately showed the break was at the joint of my line with the main line, and probably also a small break within my line, which did mean I was responsible. I had Henderson come do the work to dig up the street and repair it. I couldn't blame them for not catching the problem with their earlier video inspection because the cracks can be hard to see, and they wouldn't have been able to notice a break at the joint from their angle. My only issue was that though Mike Henderson told me I was getting a break on the price, it was still another $9000. I had hoped I'd get a better break than that, as now the total cost to replace the street portion and the trap was $13,000, which seemed excessive. But I think the fact that they had to get the equipment out there twice was the big factor. I also had to do some landscaping to add more dirt to the area that was dug up once the warmer weather arrived because the dirt they put there had settled a lot, and another hold had formed. But given the winter we had I can't entirely blame them for that, either. So though I wasn't thrilled with their cost (or necessarily their landscaping), I have to say Henderson otherwise was a great company and really had my back as I was dealing with my borough trying to figure out who was responsible for the street repair. They accommodated all my requests and never charged me anything for coming out a few extra times to meet with people, even to try to run the water flushing test. For the kind of service they offered, I can live with the higher cost. I would definitely recommend them and consider using them again in the future.

This was a potentially messy job that could have been so much worse - and had been, the week before when done by another plumber. Our plumber was pleasant from the moment he arrived and he made a bad situation better. He asked probing questions, understood what had already been done and asked about past problems we may have had and, in each decision, tried to take the path that would result in the least potential for mess, cost or further problems. He fixed the problem with a minimum of mess, inconvenience or cost and did so on a timely and after-hours basis. He was extremely conscientious about protecting floors, walls and other things in a small, cramped space; was very respectful of our home when it came to his coming in and out to get things from his truck and was very clear about what we should expect based on what he might have to do to fix the problem. In each case, when he discovered that it might take less work, he said so and explained why. In the end, we would have paid whatever it cost to cure a sewage pipe blockage in our finished basement - but he completed the work with no mess and for less than even he expected. We signed up on the spot for a service contract and will keep using Wm. Henderson as our plumber from now on.
Description of Work: Came on short notice to clear a backing up sewer drain in our basement. A potentially messy job, they inspected the pit end ejector pump, clearing the blockage. Also inspected a leaky bowl sink, finding a deteriorating tail gasket that required replacement.

I couldn't be happier with the work performed by William Henderson Heating & Plumbing. They punctually arrived at 8am every morning. Most impressive of all, they STOPPED work and called me to discuss my options when unforeseen obstacles with retrofitting A/C to our house arose. Rather than finish the job, collect their check, and leave me to suffer the consequences of a shoddy install, they were willing to let me look at my options for a week before resuming work. They are true professionals.
Description of Work: - Installed new central air handler - Retrofitted ductwork to first floor of house - Installed new external A/C unit - Replaced gas boiler - Installed ductless air handler to second floor - Installed ductless condenser

Work was completed to our satisfaction. Workers showed up on time and cleaned up after themselves. One worker wore shoe coverings which we appreciated, but his helper did not.

Very well. Very good job, professional. This was a small to medium size job. Quite expensive for a day's work, but they were a quality operation.

The guy who gave the estimate came out quickly - like 2 hours after I called and was thorough and knowledgeable. They even offered to give us space heaters until the new furnace could be installed. Once we decided on a package the work was done quickly and professionally with great cleanup after. Couldn't ask for more.

They were very good. We will definitely use them again. They have done very good work and it has been reasonably priced. They have been fine. The pricing is okay but it is a little more expensive than others.

Henderson installed an AC system in our 100+ year old house that has radiator heating. We consulted several companies regarding the correct system to use and Henderson's Ed Johnson had a great solution to the ducting problem. We used a conventional AC system instead of the more expensive and less efficient high velocity system. Also, their price was quite reasonable. Chris Brown led the crew on our job and and Mike Jones was on the job most of the days. There was an "active" part of the job when they were installing ductwork and literally working in every room of the house some days. This was handled efficiently and with high regard for my home. During this time the crew showed up promptly each morning and worked through the day. My husband and I both work out of our house so having any work done can interfere with our life in every way. This was not the case with this job and these guys. They were a pleasure to have working in our house. Always upbeat, friendly (but never overbearing) and with excellent work habits. We did not start this job until late Fall so I still haven't been able to appreciate the air conditioning - we did run the system to verify that it was fully operational. Even dealing with the scheduling of the final install was pleasant - Alice and I had many conversations as every time we scheduled the install there was a snowstorml .?..not really a problem for an AC in in the winter. My husband and I are both sensitive to noise (which was the main reason we didn't want the high velocity system). I am happy to say that what I heard of the AC system both inside and outside was exceptionally quiet and now I can't wait to use it in the summer. We are very satisfied with this company - we even had a heating emergency while this job was underway and called Henderson to fix that problem?. all went just as smoothly as the AC job. I will be using them now for our "go to" HVAC and plumbing company.

The serviceman stepped through the furnace controls & concluded it was working & the problem must be a defective thermostat. He provided a quote for a new ($500) thermostat made by the furnace maker. I decided either I could do the replacement myself or find another, possibly less expensive provider. Eventually I called another provider, who immediately enquired when the last service was (6-7 years, not since purchase). They serviced the furnace & determined that the problem was a deteriorated igniter which they replaced as part of the service. Problem solved, the thermostat was (is) working fine 3 weeks later.
Description of Work: Responded to call to trouble-shoot gas furnace which was turning off but not turning back on under control of the thermostat, requiring a manual reset to switch on.

Upon arriving at this customer’s home, the heater was running properly. The customer stated that the unit was turning off every 12 hours. Our technician completed diagnosis of the thermostat, found it was not shutting off as per the programmed schedule and had battery corrosion, and so he offered a new one. With the system running when the technician arrived, there was no reason to check the igniter. We do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Great, work was done quicker than expected with minimal mess. Then when we had some rattling issues (boiler was slightly off balance sending vibrations up the pipe) they came out immediately to resolve the issue.
