"Very prompt replies, allowed us to get all of the materials for the job to save ourselves some money. They were knowledgeable and professional, and did a great job cleaning up after themselves at every step and asked questions when needed. Could not be happier with how our railings turned out! So happy we found them."

"TL;DR: I would not recommend you hire Joe Waggoner. He demonstrated he can not do the work he says he can, in the time he says he can do it, at the cost he estimates. Ultimately, he took our money in advance and quit the job, leaving us to live in a construction zone, thousands out of pocket. Full Details: I hired Joe for a variety of small to medium carpentry projects in a house we were moving into. Joe could not, or would not, follow basic written or oral direction, nor did he follow the provided detailed dimensioned CAD drawings. He did his own thing, or took shortcuts, instead of following direction/plans and then would not own up to mistakes when he veered off course. When asked to correct/redo verifiable mistakes, he would not assume responsibility; he instead passed on the cost and consequences to us. Joe seemed to expect us, the client, to be on site everyday to review, monitor, and oversee the work. If there was an issue, he blamed us, the client, for not being there to catch it earlier. I even had to coordinate some work with his sub-contractors. Joe needed constant project oversight and emotional affirmation, which was taxing. All of this defeated the point of hiring a general contractor. Ultimately, Joe blew out his estimate, racked up unverified and unapproved charges to our credit card, and quit the job without completing it. We had to hire others to complete the work, which dragged out the 2-week project by months, and exponentially added to our costs. To add to the difficult logistical and financial position Joe put us in, he also left hundreds of pounds of trash and construction debris when he quit and took materials we had purchased for the renovation. When asked, he did return some of the materials but remedied nothing else. Of the work he did complete: the electrical work was not to code and had dangerous splices and other issues we had to have redone by a certified electrician; the drywall seams bubbled up and had to be redone by a professional; there needed to be extensive patch/painting repairs of damage he caused to the house; and the basic carpentry was often off. All leaving us stuck living with sloppy and/or un-functional work. Joe seemed to have no ethical misgivings about leaving us to live in a dangerous construction zone with a toddler when he suddenly quit the job. Overall, a nightmare to deal with personally and financially."

The average cost to hire a woodworker for a project in your home is around $65 per hour, but hourly rates can range from $35 to $250 or more, depending on the experience and skill of the woodworker. Your total woodworking project cost will depend on the complexity of the work, the type of wood, the number of projects, and any other materials your project requires. You could hire a professional woodworker to create everything from a custom cabinet to ornate, unique staircases.
Hiring a woodworker can be expensive, depending on the job, but it’s very often well worth the investment. Woodworkers are able to provide custom pieces of furniture and handmade construction to present a finished product that is exactly to your specifications. If you have a specific vision for a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture or home feature, the cost of hiring a professional woodworker is worthwhile. Plus, you’ll often get a higher quality product than what you could buy in stores for a fraction of the price.
Every woodworker has different skills and experience, so we recommend asking the following questions when hiring a woodworker for your project:
How long have you been in the woodworking industry?
What experience do you have with my type of project?
Do you have customer references I can speak with?
How long do you expect my project to take?
What is my recourse if I have an issue with your work?
Do you charge hourly or per project?
Will you work on-site or in your own workshop?
Does your fee include the necessary post-job clean-up?
While they perform similar tasks, a carpenter is responsible for the woodworking that goes into construction—like framing, installing sheathing, and hanging kitchen cabinets—while a woodworker tackles more intricate and custom projects—like building custom furniture and installing wainscoting. Based on these definitions, most woodworkers can tackle the jobs of a carpenter, but you should always ask about your specific project when choosing a woodworker to ensure they have the necessary skills to tackle the job.
It may seem simple to install trim, wainscoting, and other finishing wood in your home, but the work is complicated and often frustrating. Getting small trim pieces to line up evenly without gaps and look streamlined in a finished product is a real challenge for DIYers, even if you have the necessary tools. We recommend hiring a professional woodworker for these more intricate projects. They’ll get the job done more quickly, and they’ll have the experience necessary to make everything look neat and clean to add more value to your home.
