PACIFIC WEST ROOFING

Roofing, Roof Cleaning, Gutters,

About us

Stan Robinson and Brian Jarvis began Pacific West Roofing in 1980 with the idea that if we produced a roof according to the manufacturers requirements that we would always have work! A novel beginning with 22 employees and 36 years later, the mind set is still working as our company grows. We continue to train our installers to do it right the first time and we continually strive to be the best installers in the Portland Metro area. Stan and Brian are still running it and involved on a daily basis, even out doing repairs to keep a hand in the production side.

We received 3 bids for our project. we went with Pacific Roofing even though their bid was higher. We were told it was because they pay the roofers more so the quality is better. I also checked Angie's list and they received awards and "A" ratings. We signed a contract on 5/12/2014 saying the work would be started before 7/30/2014. I guess my only complaint with this company and we did discuss it with Stan, was Communication! There was no communication with us about the schedule. A few days before the contract was to expire I called them to see when they were going to start our job! We were told the job would take a week. So I scheduled Painters 2 weeks after the roof should have been done. Communication with them during this was difficult also. I left messages to see when the painters could start..the person that knew was out of the office and I didn't get a call back. They were delayed with the hot weather, only able to work part of the day. But still no communication. The workers were wonderful! Very polite and professional. It did take a few days to have all of their equipment and product removed when the job was done. My neighbors had their roof done in 4 days. Same size house. Quality might not be the same or they just had more guys on the job who knows.
Description of Work: Removed wood shingle roof and replaced with Asphalt Shingles.

Thank you member for the feedback on your project. Since our discussions with you about our communication, we have hired a position of sales admin to do nothing but monitor jobs, communicate with the customers daily and to be available for communications 7AM to 3PM daily. Your comments did not fall on deaf ears, we have responded to them and are looking forward to being a more responsive and service oriented company that is dependable to the customer. Thank you again for your comments. Stan Robinson owner of Pacific West Roofing

I wish I could not grade them because I don't know how their work quality is. What I do know is that when I need work done I get 3 bids. I know that since I am in contract to buy a house that the house needs a new roof and I need to know how much I am going to spend on this roof so I can budget accordingly. However when I contacted this company as they are suppose to be one of the better low slope roofing providers to get an estimate I was told they would only come out for $250 fee. They said I would get that back if I used them. But this is their busy season so their time is valuable. As far as I am concerned any company that is charging you for an estimate has found a clever way to make money. They have no incentive to competitively price their product, nor have they any incentive to try and win you as a customer. Not when they can make $250/hr doing estimate. Personally I wouldn't hire anyone who believes they must charge for an estimate.
Description of Work: Nothing, I requested a estimate and they wanted to charge $250 for one.

Thank you for your review member, The reason we have this policy in place for our real estate customers is because our company was being used as a bidding war between buyers and sellers. The realtors were using Pacific West Roofing to get the prices which were used in the negotiation and there was never any intention of using us to do the work. We went through hundreds of estimates like this which drove us to set the policy that if we got the real estate job, the $250.00 fee would be refunded. We and most of our competitors can't afford to bid the work at no cost for real estate transactions and there is no charge for estimates otherwise. I understand your frustration and hope you can see our position as well.

I requested a bid. Bret Williams showed up, took photos and told me he'd provide a bid within a day or two. After a few days I called and asked where the bid was. The office lady said she'd pass along the message to Brett. 4 days later and still no bid. What a waste of my time.

Good Morning [member name removed], First off, I would like to apologize for the issue at hand. I have looked into the problem and it seems as if we had emailed the estimate to you on 08/13 and again on 08/19. Perhaps we have the wrong email for you ? I will be contacting you shortly to obtain the correct email and will also send out a hard copy in the mail today as well. Thank you, Lizzy Lichatowich Pacific West Roofing

This is a difficult review to write. Based on the work quality, the company could have and SHOULD have received an A rating. But one puzzling lapse and delays to get this lapse fixed let me give only a ?B. ?A? stands for ?Excellent? and excellent means flawless. We had received proposals from two other companies which I?m using for comparison. We worked with Matt Krill as estimator and project manager. Matt was very knowledgeable and thorough, and explained his findings clearly. Before Matt came out for the assessment I was told he needed access to the attic, which helped me to prepare. Bidder #1 did not want to see the attic (red flag), and bidder #2 informed me that he needed to see the attic only when he arrived, so I had to hurry to prepare access. Matt presented the proposal in person, which made it easy to clarify points I did not understand. Price was competitive with bidder #1. When Matt presented the proposal, I asked if the project could start on June 23th, which fit with our vacation plans. Matt confirmed verbally that June 23th should be possible. A few days later I awarded the job to PWR and drove to the office to sign the contract. I was shown our job on the calendar starting on June 23th, marked with a couple of exclamation marks, although the contract stated ?work to commence on or before June 30th?. After our vacation we were informed that June 23th was no longer possible because a job on an apartment complex was taking longer than planned. We then ran into bad weather and another delay. Then we found out that Matt had a long-planned family visit out of state so we discussed the options. He was not comfortable having the job start without him being around, and suggested Brian Jarvis, one of the co-owners, be my contact during the project. Matt introduced Brian before he left. I specifically asked about which situations required me to contact Brian and both told me that the foreman was very experienced and could make decisions during the working phase. The project started on June 30th. The prep crew delivered material, porta-potty and a big dumpster, using plywood to protect the driveway. The plywood vendor delivered the plywood for the roof decking, but did not protect it from rain that was forecasted. I had to get a tarp and protect the plywood from a very heavy rain. The crew was excellent, worked very hard and did a quality job. The foreman, Antonio, and I had a good rapport and communicated well. On the morning of day 2, I pointed out to Antonio that I did not see 24 cutouts for the intake vents Matt had specified in the contract for proper ventilation of the roof. I offered a copy of the contract but he said he had one in the truck, but felt 24 vents were too many. I showed him that material for 24 vents were delivered and assumed he would install them. He installed only 16. Based on the meeting with Matt and Brian where I was told that the foreman was very experienced and would make decisions, I did not feel the need to call Brian, but planned to mention it to Matt upon his return. The job was completed on July 3rd. The crew cleaned up every evening and left the premises very clean after completion of the job. They worked hard and Antonio took good care of his crew during some very hot days. Matt performed final inspection on July 9th during which I mentioned only 16 vents were installed. He insisted we need 24 and promised to get them installed as soon as possible. Assuming our 8 vents were still available, I assumed the job would be completed within a week. On July 30th I reminded Matt that the vents were still not installed. That?s when I learned about a material shortage and the sheet metal vendor had some issues supplying new vents. The 8 vents we had earlier had mysteriously disappeared. On August 5th, still no vents, at which point I expressed my disappointment. This led to a not-so-pleasant exchange between Matt and myself and I asked Brian for a face-to-face. We met next day and had a very constructive meeting. The 8 vents were installed the day after I met with Brian and it took the repair person less than two hours to do so. The job is finally done but could have been done on July 3rd. The company?s slogan is ?Start to finish ? 34 years of doing it once and doing it right?. Unfortunately, this did not happen. I do recommend PWR as a roofing company. The quality of the initial assessment and the work done by the crew were excellent. Deviating from a contract and then delaying a two-hour fix by four weeks is unacceptable. This is how PWR lost their ?A? rating.
Description of Work: Tear down 25 year old asphalt shingle roof. Replace most of plywood decking. Replace old metal vents with roof ridge vents and add intake vents under the eaves. Install CertainTeed asphalt shingles, replace all flashing, connect not connected bathroom vents to new metal vents on the roof.

Last summer we purchased a Mid-century home in Portland. After our home inspection we learned that our homes' aging low slope (just shy of a 3/12 pitch) hot-mopped roof needed replacing. We ordered an additional roof inspection to confirm that re-roofing was necessary and got bids from several roofing companies for different roofing types (hot mop, steel and IB membrane roof). The roofing firms we had spoken with suggested different approaches and all were vague about their process and what we could expect from their completed work. They all promised a 5-year certification but that seemed like an industry standard offered by many roofers. We weren't quite sure how to proceed or what roof to commit to. At this point we fortunately met Matt Krill and were introduced to Pacific West Roofing from Tualatin. Matt Krill was a wonderful guide throughout the process. He came to our home on several occasions (usually after a full work day) so it could work with our schedule. He was very personable and professional and answered our numerous questions patiently and respectfully. He carefully inspected our roof and came back with well outlined bid, fully explained it and brought samples of roofing materials and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of different roofing approaches based on his many years in the roofing business. His bid also described the roofing process and the general specifications for the job and the plans for safeguarding our home in the event of bad weather during the roof installation. The thoroughness of the bid and proposal made us feel comfortable proceeding and was invaluable to align expectations between us and Pacific West. Matt's experience, his ability to present all options and his honest, ethical treatment made our the roofing process much less complicated and difficult. He is genuinely a great guy. Pacific West's bid was also very competitive. The $12,500 bid fell on the lower side of the range of bids we received that ranged from 10,000 to 16,500 and they offered a much more complete package with much better material and venting. We decided on FiberTite single-ply for our roof membrane. It was a clear stand out among the other materials. Based on many examples we researched, we expect our roof to last decades. Had we not gone with Pacific West, we most likely would'nt of had access to such a great commercial grade product for a residence. Roof work began, Hector and the Pacific West crew showed up at the same time every morning as scheduled, but most importantly, they were highly capable and conscientious. Hector wore booties in our house when ever he spoke with us, even though we said it was fine if he didn't. When the crew encountered a problem with the deep eaves of my roof they didn't continue fastening the roofing down with screw fasteners like they could have (the fasteners would have been an eyesore and very visible from underneath), but instead they stopped and painstakingly cemented down a substantial portion of the roof perimeter. They were extremely helpful in explaining framing issues that arose during the job and they replaced a large 2"x12"x 20' facia board that had rotted under the old roofing and added a downspout to prevent problems in the future. They showed me what was needed for some supports that I was going to install under the skylight wells to help me do the job right. They did a good job framing and installing five skylight curbs and skylights in our roof. The roof and rafter vents were well installed and numerous, more than adequate for venting our new roof. They built a substantial cricket uphill from our chimney to guard against future leaks at this vulnerable part of the roof. The crew was just great. We are extremely happy with quality and the craftsmanship of our new roof. Dealing with Pacific West roofing was a pleasant and fun process from beginning to end. We were actually sad to see the guys leave after they were finished. They had become friends. Im am grateful that I had the good fortune to work with Pacific West roofing and I am convinced that if I hadn't I would have ended up with much less of a roof than we now have. I cannot recommend them more highly. Great work Matt, Hector and crew. We really appreciate our wonderful roof. All the best to you. warm regards, Glen, Tara and Heath Marcusen

They were recommended by my Realtor. They did a fast and high-quality job. Matt, the consultant, made sure that the job was completed to his satisfaction. I really don't have any complaints. I would say for the quality of the work, the price was really reasonable. You likely could find cheaper, but I wouldn't. During the estimate process, Matt realized that the grade on my patio was not steep enough for shingles. The fact that he realized that while another estimate didn't was impressive.

I was not home while they were there, but have no doubt that they provided the service they stated they would do. I was extremely impressed with Pacific West Roofing from my first contact with them through the completion of the service they provided. I have had the displeasure of dealing with enough companies that don't understand what customer service is let alone spell it (apparently). They were very timely in having someone come out to inspect my roof, provide me with an estimate and then keep me updated as to when they would be able to schedule the work in. I highly recommend this company and plan them on using them for my future roof needs.
Description of Work: Roof maintenance, roof repair. Blew off debris from roof, cleaned out gutter an applied zinc powder for a moss barrier. They also chaulked around the chimney and skylight as needed, installed urethane caulking to seal corners, nail heads and gaps. Pacific West did an outstanding job replacing our roof. Matt was very knowledgeable about the material options and did a great job showing the quality of work we would get from the company. He actively steered us to an excellent choice of shingle and was available for all questions. Matt knew a lot about ventilation, more than the other companies we talked with. The installation crew was professional and quick to answer our questions and take care of small requests we made. Pacific West was quick to fix damage to our garage ceiling (a heavy metal anchor fell through the ceiling) and the repair was done very well. We highly recommend Pacific West Roofing and feel the entire experience was extremely positive.

Pacific West sent out an estimator to provide me an estimate on how much it would cost to fix a leak I had on my flat roof. The estimator was very professional and explained my roof to me in a way that was easily understood. He also saw the big picture as I will need to do a full replacement in a few years, thus this repair could lead to a larger job down the road. I was very impressed with his professionalism and his old school approach to customer service. He certainly made me want to use Pacific West again for the larger project without feeling the need to look for another bid. I will be letting my friends and neighbors know about this company in the future due to the wonderful experience I had.

Pacific West did an outstanding job on our replacement roof. Matt took us through all the material options and did a great job showing the quality of work we would get from the company. He actively steered us to an excellent choice of shingle and was available for all questions. He and the crew knew a lot about ventilation, more than the other companies we talked with. Our roof is complex, and in one case a solution was proposed for a specific room which made a lot of sense. I'm not sure another company would have gone that far to come up with a proposal beyond just replacing shingles. After completion our house looks really fantastic, it increased the street appeal immediately and it is a joy to look at. We could also feel the difference in airflow in the house and expect our summer cooling bills to be reduced. Matt and crew also did little things that we asked for with enthusiasm and reasonable cost. We highly recommend Pacific West Roofing and feel the entire experience was extremely positive.

Provider came out and did a really quick and not thorough estimate. He didn't go into the space above the garage despite a leak in the bathroom vent and recommend a replacement, which probably wouldn't have worked without additional work not quoted because another contractor went up there and realized that the pipes weren't even connected to the existing vent. His solution to the leak was to do more reflashing, which also wouldn't have fixed the issue permanently because had provider pulled up the skylights or taken a closer look, he would see the signs that they needed replacement, not repair. The two other companies that came out to look at the problem recommended skylight replacement. And the final nail on the coffin is the quote for the work was over $1,400, which is $400 more than the first guy and just $500 off from the guy we used. It's strange that the flashing and the related labor would cost more if not nearly 75% of the cost of new skylights and labor. Provider also seemed hurried and eager to leave. I realized that this is an incomplete and possible unfair review, given the company didn't do the repairs and I'm going by what I learned from two other companies' inspection. I debated whether to write a review at all, but the price difference really prompted me to write. Perhaps I don't understand all the intricacies of reflashing 4 skylights and installing a new vent, but layman me find it really surprising that it would cost so much compared to installing new skylights and vent.
