Stan Robinson and Brian Jarvis began Pacific West Roofing in 1980 with the idea that if we produced a roof according to the manufacturers requirements that we would always have work! A novel beginning with 22 employees and 36 years later, the mind set is still working as our company grows. We continue to train our installers to do it right the first time and we continually strive to be the best installers in the Portland Metro area. Stan and Brian are still running it and involved on a daily basis, even out doing repairs to keep a hand in the production side.

I contacted Pacific West for an estimate and received a response in a timely manner. The price was reasonable and when I contacted the estimator to discuss the overall condition of the roof he was kind and professional. I know the entire roof will need replaced in the near future, and they could have easily bid the job. Instead they honestly informed me that the roof still has a year or two left and quoted only the services necessary to keep it in working order. The estimator advised me that he would contact my tenant in the next couple of days to schedule the repair, but she had not heard from him a week later. I called the office and they gave me the repair date, which was a little farther out than I'd hoped for. I believe the delays in both contact and service were due to the busy season; another roofing company with an injured estimator referred me to Pac West (as I imagine they had referred other clients) and Thanksgiving was also just around the corner. I will be calling them in the future when my roof needs further work.

We had a leak in our daughter's bedroom. We called several companies to come out for a bid. Pacific Roof took a couple of days to call us back, but then were very prompt in getting someone out to take a look at our roof. It was decided that the leak was probably caused by debris built up in one of the valleys.Pacific Roof was able to get the work done within the same week. Pedro was exactly on time, very polite, and worked hard for 6 hours pressure washing our roof. Anchors needed to be installed for safety since our house is rather tall. He also cleaned up well after he was done.

Thank you for your report, I recommend we keep treatment on the roof in the future so you don't need to do the washing each time. Our office can set you up on our calendar and call ahead to see if we need to remove debris or treat moss. It will save money in the long run! Thanks, Stan, owner

We phone Pac West Roofing early in November when we discovered the leak. We received good communication (we thought) regarding sending someone to come out and see what the issues were. It took another week before someone showed up. Then he said he would get back to us. We waited. We finally got a call the next week saying it would be an easy job and would cost $400. The price was agreeable to us and he was told to go ahead and schedule. He said he would be sending a contract which we got and sent in the same day, a Friday. The following Monday was Veteran's Day so no mail. By Thursday of that week I called and were told they would let us know when they would come. The following Wed I called again and they said someone would be out that day but it was raining hard and windy so we told them to come the next day. We heard nothing until the week of the 27th when someone showed up at the front door. By that time we had contacted someone else to give us an estimate. We let the guy from Pac West to go ahead and it took less than 2 hours to do it. He was fine and not the problem, but I would never deal with the monkey business from the office again.

I believe the company to be honest and fair. I believe they did a good job. Issues came from keeping schedules. I understand this is their peak season, but the scheduling was put off several times due mostly to their scheduling issues and issues with getting new skylights on a timely basis. All in all - good company with good people. Need to improve their scheduling and communication of schedules.

Thank you member for your feedback, it is very helpful in our continued effort to do our best to serve all of our customers in a timely manner and sometimes, we can't always hit the mark due to inventory control of suppliers or our own schedule due to additional work like dry rot repair we find on jobs just before yours. When they tore off the old roof they found a significant amount of damage to repair. They had to replace a lot of the plywood decking which was water damaged due to improper flashings and construction on the original roof, replace all the barge boards (rotted) and make other repairs. They worked at a steady pace and finished in 3 days which is to be expected considering they did not know what they would find under the tile. I did not want a quick one day job with a dozen guys on my roof in a race to the finish, or for corners to be cut. They called me twice to approve additional repairs and then showed me the damage. This was an expensive roof job but worth it in my opinion - it looks great and I am confident a quality job was performed and it will last a long time. I especially like the appearance of the triple-layer Landmark TL shingles which are very thick and have a lot of dimension to them. Pacific West also uses high quality flashings, under-layment and other materials to ensure a long-lasting roof and warranty. Lastly, Alton was a pleasure to work with and really knows his business. I would recommend Pacific West to other homeowners who want a quality roof installation at a fair price.
Description of Work: The job was to replace the 35 year old concrete tile roof on my 2400SF home with high quality Landmark TL shingles, make needed repairs, and cover it all with a 5-star warranty. I knew there would be dry rot and other problems underneath based on leaks and problems I had encountered with the fragile concrete tile. They also needed to remedy the lack of existing ventilation and install ridge vents at both peaks. It was a big job and their estimate was higher than others but I wanted quality work and Alton impressed me as very knowledgeable and capable. He explained what we were likely to find underneath and was absolutely right.

Member, thank you for the feedback. We work hard to insure the job gets done right the first time. We get called to homes often to fix errors made by contractors who usually underbid the project and therefore cut corners. This isn't our style. We take the time to estimate jobs correctly, educate customers about the costs, and most importantly...perform quality work and provide superior customer service. We appreciate the opportunity and thank you for your business. -Alton

Working with Pacific West Roofing company was a pleasure in a very stressfull situation, when rain was dripping in our living room, and the forcast predicted rain for the whole month!
Description of Work: Our roof started to leak and all the other roofing companies that I called told me that they were TOO busy to even come out to give me an estimate. Pacific West not only came out, but placed a tarp over the bad area in the roof, so it was a temporary fix till they could come out to fix it properly. Their worker Pedro was real fast, professional. I recommend their work!

Member, You posted 2 posts on Angie's List. One says "he had the heart of a teacher" and the next one says "Was more interested in warning about bad applicators" one was a B rating and the other an A rating? We are a little confused but we hope you had your project completed to your satisfaction and I'm sorry we weren't that company. Stan Robinson, owner.

Things went very smoothly! I emailed them for an estimate on Thursday night. By 11am the next morning I had my estimate, which turned out to be the lowest of the three companies I had selected from Angie's List. (Actually it was the lowest of two estimates, since on the the three companies never bothered to get in touch with me.) Even though it was completely understandable, the only thing that caused us any concern was the clause in the contract that they would have to charge for additional materials and labor if they found dry rot under the old roof. We had to laugh when we did indeed receive a bill for extra materials and labor to the tune of $65 when we paid the remainder of the bill. The workers showed up the evening before work was to start and used a crane system to lift all of the materials onto our second story roof. Other workers on the roof moved them around to the location where they would be needed. The following morning, the old roof came off and the new went on. They were extremely neat; everything discardable went in the dumpster they provided. The entire process took two days. A couple of days later the owner showed up to inspect everything. He found a few items that he decided he wanted his workers to come back and do a better job on, which they did the next day. Both my husband and I are afraid of heights and don't know what to look for anyway, but I had my brother come over to look at it before signing the final check. He knows quite a lot about construction (our father was a carpenter), and he works in a related industry. My brother was very satisfied with the work on our roof and is planning on using Pacific West Roofing when he replaces his roof in a year or two.
Description of Work: Old roof (shingles) removed. Dry rot around venting removed. One sheet of plywood and one 2x4 replaced. Replaced flashing. New roof (shingles) put on. Vanished without a trace.

The work was very sloppy as front steps, siding, bedroom drywall and concrete were damaged. The workers did not acknowledge these damages. Drink bottles/cans were left on the front porch, etc. After the roof was supposedly finished, we had to clean up trash, nails and junk in the yard and driveway. We notified the sales rep of these things. This was more than minimal sloppiness. The damages done in November were not approved for repair until January when the owners came out to see them. The contractors to repair the damages were chosen by Pacific West Roofing, not us. The workers wore Interstate Roofing sweatshirts. We did not know for sure if the workers would be here or not. It's very noisy when the work is done. That is to be expected. One day, we left the house as we were told they would be here. When we came home, no work had been done. After the workers left thinking the work was completed, it was visually clear that they had to correct some of the work. Some of the shingles had to be cut to fit. Some of the flashing did not look like flashing in the CertainTeed brochure they gave us. It looked awful. The workmanship issues were made clear to Pacific West Roofing. These things have been corrected. Sam who did the corrections was very nice and professional. The dry rot charges were excessive and unreasonable. We were charged for 63 sheets of plywood at $40 per sheet for dry rot damage. Our roof is not big enough for 63 sheets of plywood. The billing invoice lacked documentation to support it according to both the office manager and the sales rep. The sales rep and office manager lacked consistency and agreement on what the charges should have been on the invoice. There was not agreement on what the charges were for or explanations on why there were differences. After questioning the invoice, over $1,000 in charges were added. Invoices differed. Some of the charges were not clear and have not been made clear. The billing issues have been clearly made known to Pacific West Roofing. We followed the procedure stated on the billing invoices by contacting the office manager about the mistakes. We were not refunded $200.64 for plywood waste or for any other charges. Charges were made that were not specifically stated anywhere in the contract. It was never indicated to us that we were past due on any payments. Upon making a payment of $2,500.00 on November 4, 2010 at the time of contract signing, we were told by the sales representative, Alton Maddox, and the owner, Stan Robinson, that full payment was not due until the work was completed. When we were told by Alton Maddox to pay $10,000 on December 13, 2010, the work was not completed. When we made our final payment of $569.56, we complained to the sales rep that we did not understand why he was demanding the money when the repair work was not completed. He said that the owner, Stan Robinson, had told him to do it. We paid in full and on time as full payment was requested and paid prior to completion of all the work. Weather delayed the completion of some of the repair work painting. The repair work for damages done by Pacific West Roofing was not completed until April 22, 2011. An insurance adjuster called the sales rep for details on the condition of the roof prior to the new roof, but the call was not returned. The office manager was able to provide some but not all of the information. We were told that we would be updated on costs. This was not done. We started with a $7,360 roof installation and ended up with a $13,069 bill. We knew there were going to be expenses but not this much. I have had contractors tell me this was too much. Billing issues were addressed with a complaint through the Better Business Bureau. Pacific West Roofing did not resolve through the Better Business Bureau the billing issues in dispute on the last billing invoice. We have requested the business to show us that the charges in dispute are accurate and reasonable. The sales rep said the work was not supervised and the billing was a mess. The response by Pacific West Roofing has inaccurate and misleading information that fails to address the unresolved issues. We should have withheld payment until they were able to resolve their internal issues which have been brought to their attention numerous times. These things should have been resolved months ago, but Pacific West Roofing has refused any reimbursement. Stan Robinson, the owner, did not return any phone messages or respond to any emails that we left for him. The critical and derogatory comments made by the sales representative toward the culture of the workers are unprofessional and unethical. We have never dealt with any individual or company that makes as many dishonest and fabricated statements as Pacific West Roofing.

Response from PACIFIC WEST ROOFING
We have received several complaints from the members; including filed complaints from the Better Business Bureau and the Oregon Construction Contractors Board. We have addressed the member's concerns in person, through telephone communication and through responses to complaints made with the BBB and CCB. There were damages to the home, however, the member's have since been compensated for the damages. The member's complained that there was trash on the job site, however, when our salesman called to address this concern, the members said that the clean-up was "minimal"; and this was later addressed with our employees and made clear that this was inappropriate. The members state that the damages sustained in November were not taken care of until January - this is true, because the members claimed that they wanted to use their own contractor to do the work instead of using our contractors. The contractor that the members used was not available until January. The members stated that the contract price and invoice price differ greatly - and this is true due to the discovery of significant ventilation and dry rot issues. In the contract that the members signed, it is clearly stated and verbally re-addressed that upon the discovery of ventilation issues and/or dry rot issues that the customer will incur extra charges for time and material. The members initialed next to this clause in the contract stating that they understood this. We are a CertainTeed Certified contractor and cannot roof over poor ventilation or dry rot, not to mention it is unethical to do so. The members were also given a Change Order, which they signed, stating that they were upgrading the shingles to be used to re-roof the home from Landmark 30 to Landmark 40, which also contributed to the increase from the contract price. Also included on the Change Order were the charges that the members would be incurring due to the ventilation and dry rot issues. This signed document re-enforces that the members were aware of the extra charges. The extra charges that the members incurred were due to replacing venting, installing a proper ventilation system, replacing the dry rot and the man hours/labor costs to correct the two issues. Our estimator met the members at their home after the work was complete to perform a Final Inspection; this is the time when the homeowners can point out anything that is unsatisfactory and talk about any charges on their invoice. There was a note made on the Final Inspection documents that indicated that we would pay for the repairs of the damages, but that other than that, the members had no complaints. The members signed the Final Inspection checklist that everything was done to their satisfaction. We provided the members with a detailed invoice that was clearly itemized as to what each charge was for – when the members later called to inquire about some of the charges, the charges were clearly explained to them, and at the time they indicated that they understood what the charges were for. There were also credits on the invoice, bringing down the overall cost as a courtesy. We refunded the members a total of $200.64 as a courtesy for plywood waste. The members state that they paid their account in full before the completion of the work; however, our records show that the members made their deposit of $2,500.00 at the time of the contract signing on November 4th, 2010, then paid another $10,000 toward their balance on December 13th, 2010, then made their final past-due payment of $569.56 on February 1st, 2011. If disputes were still an issue at any of these times, payment should not have been made. The members state that the salesman failed to return a phone call from an insurance adjuster; however, no one in our company recalls this alleged phone call. We have responded to complaints made by the members to the Better Business Bureau and the Oregon Construction Contractors Board, we have responded with letters, statements and supporting documents to both establishments, however, we have yet to hear back from either establishment as to the next step in the process. All of our documentation supports all charges as substantiated charges and we have declined to give the members a refund. We find it unfortunate that the members are displeased with our company; however, all charges were made clear to the members at the time of the contract signing, the time of the Change Order signing and at the time of the Final Inspection. During these times, the members not only agreed to the charges by signing the documents, but they also had no complaints. We have since issued the members courtesy credits and repaired any damages at our own expense and feel that we have been more than fair in the matter.

We discovered a leak in our roof shortly before we were planning to leave town for an extended period. We called Pacific West Roofing after reading reviews on Angie's list. They were willing to take on just the portion that was leaking so it could be finished while we were still there. They were able to schedule the work, get the roof done, and get everything cleaned up before we left town. It is a difficult site and a difficult roof. When we return to Portland, we will definitely call them to have them do the rest of the roof

Stan was professional and showed us what they were doing every step of the way. We were like hawks on him and his team, b/c we've watched way too many Holmes on Homes. They are not completely finished with the job, yet. There are some small areas that they say they will fix...so, we shall see if they actually follow through... Update: Stan is on it and his firm is making the final fixes. I highly recommend his firm. Very satisfied with their work.
Description of Work: Tore off and replaced entire roof. They fixed some beams. Dry Rot, etc. Added gutters, painted, flashing and clean up.

Overall it went pretty well considering that it was in December that we needed our roof to be replaced. They told us that they would be cleaning up the debris every day, but left a pile of debris on our deck 6 feet high. A week later it was cleaned up. Left garbage from lunches in our flower beds. But, as far as the roofing job it looks really good and we have no leaks now. We still have some cosmetic problems that we have to solve, but we will have to take care of that.
Description of Work: Took a tile roof off and replaced it with a composition roof. Also replaced the sheetrock. We had a leaking roof because most of the tile was broked from a prior contractor that washed the moss off of it.

Thank you, we are working on a better system to keep job sites clean, this one was a bit tough because we couldn't get our dump truck up the driveway due to snow so the delay was unfortunate but when it cleared, we cleared the debris!

Our estimate was prompt. The workers showed up on schedule. Work took a bit longer than planned due to the extensiveness of the rot. My only criticism is that the workers were not always left with the tools they needed so there was some unnecessary downtime. Overall these folks do a nice job.
Description of Work: Roof tear-off, dry rot repair, replacement roof
