Response from In-Home Furniture Repair and Refinishing by Ryan Poulton
After more than 90 straight A reviews, I was a bit perplexed by this customer's straight B review. Then I realized she had given me a B on punctuality. She brought her chair to my shop, and picked it up--I never even had an appointment to visit her. So "punctuality" could not have been an issue. Evidently, as a matter of principal, she does not ever give A's, and simply awards B's to all categories without reading them. Also, just for the record, repairing the crack in her chair was $35, not $80. I also touched up various flaws for $45, thus a total bill of $80 (her B grade on price further suggests that her B's are simply automatic.) Unfortunate reasons to have a now-blemished record.

The charge of $800 need clarification. I typically charge far less than $800 to refinish a dining room table top. However, this case was exceptional in that it was a truly massive table, plus two leafs, and included pickup and delivery as well.

Mr. Poulton returned my phone call promptly and we discussed the project and the estimated cost. He picked up the table and delivered it to me when it was finished, which was very helpful as I don't have a truck. He was professional, helpful, and his cost was exactly what he said it would be. He was very concerned with giving me the end results that I was looking for. The coffee table is now beautiful, with no more scratches and no worn finish. I am extremely happy with his services and his expertise. I will definitely use him again! He was a pleasure to work with!
Description of Work: Mr. Poulton refinished a coffee table for me. It was a bit of a complicated project, and required him to apply several layers of a new finish before he was able to sand it down and apply the final finish.

Mr. Poulton was sent pictures of the pieces via email and quickly contacted me to discuss the project. He later presented an estimate which was accepted. Mr. Poulton picked up the pieces (on the day and time which was arranged) and had them ready within a week. Mr. Poulton was also kind enough to work around our schedule as we were also having some other work done in the house and had hoped to have the pieces gone during that time. When he delivered the pieces a week later my husband and I were amazed at how wonderful the end tables and coffee table looked -- they looked practically new and all the dings and dents were gone and they had a lovely finish on them. Also, the brackets which were installed on the coffee table did help to stabilize it and they did get rid of the wobble. We would definitely recommend him to anyone thinking of having their furniture refinished!
Description of Work: Mr. Poulton refinished/repaired two end tables and a coffee table (all circa 1960's - veneer type), and de-wobblified the coffee table by installing attractive brackets to stabilize it.

Ryan's work is outstanding. He arrived when promised and looked at various pieces of furniture, giving informed commentary and prices on the spot. Both my wife and I thought his prices were quite reasonable. We had him work on about a half a dozen items including a coffee table, an old-fashioned ice chest and a piano bench. In addition, he fixed a cracked leg on our dining room table. All of the work was excellent, and I must say that the refinished coffee table looks better than it did when we bought it new. He's a very nice and knowledgeable man. I recommend him without reservation.

Ryan was very friendly, pro-active and professional. He spent time on the phone getting as many details as he could to give an over-the-phone estimate and then confirmed the estimate after seeing the furniture first hand. His time and dollar estimates were right on and I have no complaints what so ever.

Ryan gave an estimate based on digital pictures I sent him and stuck with this, although it took him longer than he'd thought (I gave him extra money with absolutely no pressure nor hinting on his part). Prompt and courteous phone conversations. Excellent job, can't tell it was broken. A real gentleman and craftsman. Highly recommended. Great to have someone do such good work in my own home - saves the hassle of packing/driving a good sized piece to a shop for estimate, repair then driving it back home. Highly Recommended.

The bottom-line first. Ryan did a great job removing the wobbles and rejuvenating the surfaces. I was sure everything would have to be stripped, sanded, re-glued and multiple coatings applied to get the set to look to how it turned out. I cannot describe the process Ryan uses to rejuvenate the finish on the hutch other then to say that it involved using cloth and special selections of liquids. I have to admit that when I watch him start work on the hutch, I was skeptical that the results would be satisfactory. He worked a couple of hours on the hutch and the results were quite stunning. Table and chairs would require far more work and so he took them back to his place to fix and finish. He does not have much room to work and store furniture at his place but was kind enough to keep the chairs at his place until we were able to take possession of our new home and he could deliver them to the new home and assemble the table which had been dismantled for the work. Ryan was clear about what he could and could not do. He was very honest about the various options in how they related to the finish value of the set and the cost of each option and the expected outcome of the work. In this case, he said while the dinning set was good and sound, but it would not be wise to spend a couple or more thousand dollars on it to have it stripped, sanded, etc. As he predicated, the process he used to rejuvenate and restore the set would not be flawless, it would nonetheless be nearly so. We saved a bunch of money and have a very fine dinning room set. If I can get back into this review later, I will post a few ?before and after? photos of the set. After we move out of our current home to the new one, Ryan will be coming in to refresh the cabinets and woodwork in preparation to selling the house.
Description of Work: My wife and I inherited a dinning room set that consisted of a two-piece hutch, a table with end slide out leaves, and four chairs. The finish on all the pieces was scratched, or worn. The table and chairs were wobbly. I tried to convince my wife that we should craigslist the set and find something better. She liked the set and wanted to keep it and have it refinished. The goal then was to have the set fixed and refinished. I reviewed Angieslist and Ryan's business bubbled to the top of my list of vendors to call. I choose him based on the review other customers wrote. Honesty, quality, and reasonable price were the keywords in the reviews that caught my eye..

Ryan informally calls himself "the Furntiure Doctor" and indeed he is. Here's one example. We have a four poster bed in one of our guest rooms with a wood ornament at the top center of the headboard. One of our guests grabbed it and broke it off. Ryan determined that he could use two bolts to reattach it. He found the right size bolts at the hardware store, drilled the holes and reattached the ornament. He made sure teh bolt heads were colored so they are not visible. Antoher example, the bracing on one of our Dining Room chairs cracked. Ryan was able to mend it including a screw for extra strength. I could go on, but I think you get the diea.
Description of Work: We own and operate the Lion and the Rose Victorian Bed & Breakfst in Portland, OR. We have numerous pieces of antique furniture and reproductions that get heavy daily use. Over the past five years, Ryan has performed several repair projects for us. His work and professinalism is outstanding. He has saved us thousands of dollars in replacement costs and has extended the life of our furniture. He is responsive, prompt and creative in consdering alternatives. We are grateful that he is available to us.

Very prompt, very courteous, very competent, very reasonable. Wonderful to have someone come to the house.
Description of Work: Ryan came to my home and looked at the furniture. He needed to take the top of an antique sewing machine cabinet with peeling veneer back to the shop. When he returned with it (beautifully repaired) he was able to do some cosmetic touch-up to a Chinese carved coffee table on-site. He explained to me exactly what he was doing and what to expect from this type of fix. I also have an antique Chinese chest. He cautiously tried to do some touch-up on it. It was not very successful and he told me beforehand that it might not work. But he was willing to try.

I contacted several re-finishers that were reported on in Angie's List and didn't find many that were interested in doing my project, and those that were, were pricing it way out of my interest. Ryan responded right away from my e-mail requisition, and after discussing on the phone, it became clear that he was going to be a good bet to do the job at exceptional pricing. We arranged to have him come to my home and look at the cabinet, and after discussing process, we agreed to go ahead at his originally suggest price. He took the cabinet to his shop in his truck and a week later he was ready to return it refinished. If you need wood furniture repaired or refinished, I think Ryan is a super craftsman that I highly recommend.
Description of Work: Ryan refinished a new Oak TV/Entertainment cabinet to change the color from the 'as purchased' light antique oak to a warmer medium or "honey" oak. I was not happy with the original color soon after bringing it home and Ryan refinished it to a much more pleasing shade of Oak and one that more closely matched other existing Oak cabinets in the room. I gave him a shelf from one of the existing cabinets and he used that to come up with a better color match. The results were exceptional and I cannot tell from the exterior that the cabinet had been changed. It looks as good as any cabinet on a showroom floor. The amazing part is that he did not have to strip the original finish down to bare wood, and as a result he could offer me a very reasonable price to complete.

Ryan answered our call himself, came right over, and took the chair. It was very damanged by the moving company. He brought back the chair about a week later and it was repaired so that you couldn't see anything had been wrong with it. He did a fantastic job. He repaired the dressers on site. They took a lot longer that he had anticipated, but kept to his original estimate. He is very thorough and very skilled. I would recommend him hghly to anyone,

He was meticulous and conscious of what I had going on, not only repairs but keeping me advised abut time factors. I asked him about what could be done for a dining room set and he told me honestly and what the outcome would be, he did not sugar coat it and told me it would not be worth it to do the refinishing. It would have $1000 for him.
Description of Work: He does furniture refinishing, restoration, and repair. Furniture, antiques and woodwork. He repaired damage to a wood railing that the movers I used damaged. Since he was here I asked him about some other damages and he touched up some scratches on a coffee table.
