This was one of the best transactions we have ever had. Ryan was very thorough with his questions when I first called him and provided an estimate of cost over the phone. We agreed upon a date and time to meet and he was prompt and on time. He sanded the top and legs of a teak trestle table with two drop leafs. We were concerned because the table was 35 years old with a thin teak veneer and had been abused children as they grew. Ryan explained what he would do and when it would be ready. He carefully sanded the table top so as not to go through the veneer but to remove the damaged areas. He hand sanded the legs and put a coat of lacquer finish on the legs. He recommended using a danish oil finish on the table top to bring out the grain of the wood and provide some protection. We followed his directions and the table looks as good as new. We are very pleased with the results.

A great experience. I wanted the pieces refinished a darker color and he called after stripping the furtniture and came to my house with the possible stains he could use, even mixing some pigments for me to see. He applied some on a stripped drawer to make sure the color was exactly the one I wanted. He really wanted to make sure I was happy with the color. Both pieces look fabulous and were finished quite quickly. I will definitely use his services again!

Description of Work: Repaired damage to wood piano leg. Damage was a deep gouge and the gouged wood piece was not recovered. The repair completely restored the area, matching texture and color of the finish. Looks wonderful.

The leg on a very large Chest of drawers was broken accidently by contractors that had to move the chest to install a heat head. The salesperson was kind and said he would pay for the damages. I checked Angie's List for the best person for the job as I didn't know anyone that did this type of repair. I called Ryan and he told me he would call me the next week to set up an appointment. He called as promised and also called when he was delayed a few minutes because of raod work. I very much appreciate the way he stayed in touch even though he was just a few minutes late, very considerate. He fixed the leg and had all the tools necessary with him to do the job right. While he was here I remembered that the bottom drawer was not sliding in evenly. He fixed that very quickly and charged me separately for that repair. That was also very considerate as most people would not want to do the extra paperwork. All in all he did an excellent job, absolutely could tell he knew what he was doing. He was punctual, polite and professional. Oh, and he did explain how he could have fixed it which would have taken several days and be much more expensive. Since I am retired I was very pleased that he was able to fix it properly and keep the cost down. I would call him again and also recommend him highly.
Description of Work: Ryan reattached the leg on a very large Chest of drawers. Separately he also fixed the bottom drawer so it would slide evenly. The reason I had it billed separately was that the contractors that accidently broke the leg said they would pay for the repair. Actually I hadn't even thought about the drawer until Ryan arrived. The set has sentimental value as it was passed down from my Mother, so it was important to me to have it fixed properly by an experienced person.

One of my grandchildren sat on the wooden arm of a chair - right on the spot where it had previously years ago been broken. It looked like a complicated repair because the wooden arm fit in some hard to define way into the upholstery of the chair. Ryan Poulton figured it out, fixed it perfectly, did an excellent job in just a few days, and charged a very reasonable price - about $90. I will definitely contact him again if needed for furniture repair.

Ryan is not only an expert, but he's also fairly priced and will attempt the impossible jobs. Attempting the impossible jobs is the number one reason why he's the only repairer I will use. By impossible jobs, I mean he will work on products that imitate wood, not real wood, like veneers/particle board. Sometimes we just need someone to try and do it. I've learned from experience that no other furniture repairer would touch the stuff, probably because they are not as confident in their skills as Ryan. Ryans prices are competitive making his services useful on more than just the extreme cases. Ryan is incredible at his matching skills to shades/colors and grains. All around he is a great wood worker and I wouldn't trust the hundreds of thousands of dollars in furniture I've used him for to anyone else. He is a true artist and professional.
Description of Work: We've had Ryan repair a lot of furniture for our company. Anything from Fine antiques to new age cabinets. His skill is unmatched.

I described the story above. We are grateful to Mr Poulton for his professional work and would call on him again.
Description of Work: Our 1920s table had water marks, scratches, etc. I thought we would have to spend a lot of money to completely refinish it. BUT, Mr. Poulton spent an hour or so working on those stains and marks, and the table looks a lot better. So much so that we can defer the refinishing for several years. Mr. Poulton was very candid about how well his work would hold up (he said some of the water marks would re-appear) and some did reappear, but not as bad as the original stain. He also gave us some good advice about what to do and not do to clean the table. I would call on Ryan Poulton again to assess any furniture refinishing in our house.

Member's description is accurate in all details but one: I spent approximate two hours on the job, plus one hour travel time. I mention this because his account of one hour, and a charge of $100, implies a rate of $100 per hour. It's actually MUCH lower. But I thank him for his kind words.

I sent Ryan an email with pictures of the broken dresser drawer and an explanation of what was wrong with it. He called me later that day to give me an estimate. The drawer sides were made of cheap plastic and Ryan agreed to fix it anyway (when others I called wouldn't). The front panel of the drawer broke completely off and there was no way to reattach it since the parts were made of plastic. Ryan used small metal L brackets to attach the inside front panel to the sides. The drawer works great now. I dropped the drawer off on Thursday and it was ready by Friday.

We have a treasured family heirloom dining set imported from china years ago, and at a recent family dinner one of the chairs was noted to have a broken leg. I contacted Ryan and arranged to bring it to him. He inspected the chair, gave an estimate and fixed it securely within his estimated time frame. He was professional, knowledgeable, and reasonable, all great qualities in someone who you are entrusting you valued family belongings to. I will use him for everything that needs repair from now on.

Ryan was easy to reach by phone and we set up a time for me to bring the bed rails over. He had them ready for me to pick up in a few days. It was great to get the work done with such ease. He would have come over to get the bed rails, but indicated the cheapest way was for me to drop off. That certainly proved to be the case! I'm very satisfied and feel I received an excellent deal for the work done.
Description of Work: Ryan fixed two bed rails for an antique bed. Even though the work ended up being more involved than he expected, since the existing wood trim had been glued on and he had to chip it off, he stood by his bid.

The finished table was exactly what the wife was looking for. The table and leaves matched perfectly to the chairs. In fact, it looked it looked like a brand new dining room table and chairs. She was very pleased which, of course, made me happy. He did a very professional job on all pieces to include the damaged chair that he repaired. I can now sell the entire set of 6 chairs instead of trying to sell an odd grouping of 5 chairs. I would highly recommend him to anyone who was looking to repair or refinish a wood product. I think our project was at just about the limit of what he could transport. I helped him load the table and leaves into his truck (mid size pickup) and I am still left wondering how he off loaded at his place and then reloaded it for transport back to Vancouver from Portland. In the end, since I was so satisfied with his work, I didn't dwell on the logistics of his operation. It is good to know that there are still craftsmen in the community who take pride in their work and have the skill to accomplish what they advertise.
Description of Work: We recently moved to Vancouver and the arm to a dining room chair was damaged by the movers. The wife, who had always wanted new chairs, purchased a new set of chairs but they did not match the color of the dining room table. We contacted a couple of Vancouver furniture repair/renovators by telephone and email. We had to leave messages when we called the firms. Neither firm responded to our messages or phone calls. We found Ryan on Angie's list and made contact with him after leaving an initial message on his phone. His return call was within hours of our initial call which I found refreshing based on our experience with contractors since moving to the area. Usually, it has been days, rather than hours, even in the cases when contact was made. Ryan and I agreed to an appointment at the house to view the table at our house. He arrived on time and viewed the table and two extension leaves which we wanted to have refinished to a different color. He gave us a quote, which I accepted on the spot, and he loaded the table to take back to his shop. He also took one of the new chairs to use as a color guide to ensure that the table closely matched the new chairs. He contacted us approximately a week later to arrange delivery. He delivered the refinished table and received payment but before he departed I asked him about repairing the damanged chair. He looked at it and said that he could also repair the chair (which is all I wanted in the first place but the wife was not to be denied her new chairs!). He gave me a price and to hold the cost down I told him that I would pick up the chair from him at his location in south Portland. We agreed and three days later he called to say the chair was ready. I traveled to south Portland and took possession of the chair and it looked almost brand new.

I had a small entry table that is over 100 years old. It was my grandmother's. It has a shallow drawer and two shelves. I've had it in the last several homes I've lived in but haven't done anything but dust it. It had decades of normal use and knocks from moving and so forth. My wife and I decided it was time to freshen it up, but we didn't want to lose much of any of the wonderful patina it has acquired over the years. Thus no stripping and refinishing from scratch. Ryan came to the house and looked the piece over and we discussed the problems - one of the top planks was loose - and desire not to refinish, just to freshen it up. I made some suggestions and spent a good deal of time with us and the piece before giving us a bid. We thought the bid, $175, was very reasonable so asked him to take it and do the work. About a week later he called to say it was done and we set up a time for him to bring it. He was exactly on time, had carefully covered it against the rain and then brought it in. He went over what he had done, why, how it had been lightly refinished in matte lacquer. It now looks wonderful and will be good for decades to come. We're really delighted with the work and the price.

!Ryan was very professional and his workmanship made the scratches disappear and the nightstand base appeared like new again. I was thankful to have someone willing to come on site (even if it costs a little more) so that I didn't have to risk further damage by trying to move the nightstand to a location for repair. Ryan is a real asset and a great resource, and I will definitely use him in the future for furniture repair. I am so glad we found him!

Randy asked good questions in our phone conversation, and came prepared for several possible repair scenarios. He tested the damaged area, determined the correct fix (hand-tinted and hand-painted coloring followed by a patient build-up of clear finish). He gave me a cost estimate based on 1.5 hours of labor, but the job ended up taking more time. He was up-front about charging me extra for the extra time (which seemed fair), and the dollar amount was quite reasonable.
Description of Work: Randy fixed finish damage caused by a solvent spilled on our dining room table. He matched the color of the existing finish, then added many coats of clear finish to restore a smooth surface. Randy was great to work with, fairly priced, and produced a result we are very pleased with.

We had several pieces that we had been told would not be possible to fix or would not be worth the expense. Ryan did terrific work and was quick, thorough and his prices are very reasonable, considering all the work that needed to be done. 1. The nightstands are from the 1870's and one had a large hole punched in the side. Both had drawers that no longer worked well and were scratched and just looked bad. When I got them back, I couldn't tell that there had ever been anything wrong; they looked like new. 2. We have a large, heavy, round table that was no longer connected correctly to the pedestal. Some of the connecting pieces were lost during a move, but Ryan was able to fix it anyway . 3. The piano was expecially difficult to restore because it is an extremely heavy walnut upright that has 3 stained/leaded glass windows across the front. (It was originally a player piano back in the 1920's). It had been in a tavern and had water marks and scratches all over it and the finish was just about gone. We wanted to get it ready to sell, but didn't want to put a lot of money into it. We couldn't believe the way it turned out--no water spots and the finish is just beautiful. We were worried that the stained glass would be a problem to work around, but it turned out great. 4. The mirror is large and has three frames around it, all very ornate. It had fallen and the outer frame, which has an open filigree pattern had shattered. Ryan took a mold from the undamaged part and created an exact match and when I got it back I couldn't tell which was the repair and which was the original. Ryan is obviously a master craftsman and loves what he does. It was a pleasure to work with him and we would certainly work with him again.
Description of Work: Ryan repaired and restored several antiques: two nightstands, the dining room table, a large mirror, and an upright piano. Everything turned out even better than we thought possible,

End result ... beyond expectation. Ryan was very polite and did everything he said he'd do and in a very timely manner. We optimized each of our "time" by my taking photos and emailing them to him for his review. We talked over the phone and he asked me specific questions which I could answer for him. This allowed him to determin that two of the four pieces were not worth fixing but the other two were. Ryan normally does his work on/at your site, but due to my wife's allergies, he agreed to pick up the furniture, take it to his shop, fix it and redeliver ... for an extra fee, which I expected to pay for the "extra service". He was prompt and realistic in all his dealings and very pleasant to work with. A few of my friends are wood working "hobyists", and they advised me that one of the toughest things to do is match the stain after the refinishin work; Ryan agreed, but his end result was flawless and I could not tell where the wood had been restained. I also interviewed another Angie's List A rated furniture repair service, but the person I spoke to made me feel like he was doing me a favor to do business with him. Not with Ryan, as he's professional, honorable and very skilled at his work. I felt his prices plus extra charges to accomodate my special needs were very reasonable, and I would use him without question for any furniture refinishing work I may ever need.
Description of Work: I asked Ryan to consider/look at four pieces of wood furniture that need varying degrees of refinish work. Even though we reside only 12-13 miles apart, it was more efficient for me to take pictures of the pieces in question and email them to him for quick evaluation. We then discussed them at length over the phone and he gave me enough information to make a decision not to repair two of the four pieces (very good advice). The other two he was able to handle okay. I had very serious flaking of the finish on two end tables. He fixed the wood in question and matched the stain and finish perfectly ... flawless work.

Ryan gave me an estimate including several different options for how to handle some of the repairs. The day of the repairs he did the following: filling in, sanding, and staining the carved trim and leg of an oak hope chest; creating a foot to match one of four broken off an ornate antique chair, then sanding and staining the foot; repairing the cross brace of a hand carved dining table knocked out of plumb; creating a leg to replace one snapped off a delicate hand carved solid walnut accent table held together by countersunk dowels; and, using stain and filler to mask damage to the veneer on the legs and drawer of a folding side table with intricate inlays in the damaged areas. Additionally, on the same day he also filled, sanded and stained a very deep groove in the leg of a modern Danish reclining loveseat. All of this Ryan did in roughly 8 hours of hard, steady work. His professionalism is exceeded only by his skill. He left each area of the house he worked in neat and clean, and was pleasant throughout the day despite several of the projects presenting unique challenges. I cannot recommend him highly enough!

Great, the end result is beautiful! The cost was about half the price quoted by some local companies who tried to upsell work that wasn't really needed. For example, one contractor. also rated well on Angie's list, quoted several hundred dollars to also remove a mark on the matching buffet. Ryan did the same thing for I think $15-$20. If I need furniture refinished again, I will call Ryan immediately.
Description of Work: Ryan refinished and stabilized chairs a 1920's dining room set that was originally my grandparents. The table had been in my parent's basement and used for canning when I was growing up, so there were a lot of marks, including burn marks. The chairs were also really squeaky.

Ryan did a good job, the damage was bad enough that the repair could not hide the fact that it had split, but he did help us gain a few more years use out of the the furniture and the repair is barly noticiable if you are not looking for it. He explained how to repair the second dresser and we did this on our own, with the same results, a few more years use and a barly noticable repair job.
Description of Work: We called Ryan because we had two pieces of bedroom furniture that had split and warped while in storage. He came out, looked over the work, puzzled through with us our options and then went to work. He repaired two splits on a vanity/dresser - one on the top and one down the side. He also consulted us on the repair of a second dresser with a similar split down the side. He was about 10 minutes late, which is the only reason I put a B for punctuality. He did come out on a Sunday though, so that made up for it.

Response from In-Home Furniture Repair and Refinishing by Ryan Poulton
I'm a bit mystified with respect to the 2 "B" ratings, particularly for the "quality" category. By his own words "everything is in working order and looks great." Perhaps he is referring to the wobble in his swivel desk chair. It's a very old chair and required a part that is no longer being manufactured. After a lengthy search, I ordered a part from out of state that--with adaption--would work. After a delayed shipping process, I received the part, adapted it, and removed 80% of the wobble, not 100%. This may explain the B in "quality." As to the B in "responsiveness" perhaps the member is referring to the delayed turnaround. Instead of 48 hours, it was 2 weeks due to shipping delays. I kept him apprised of the process as it was unfolding, and despite the fact that right part was no long being manufactured and adapting the substitute part took triple the time I anticipated, I charged him the original estimate. All things considered, the two Bs have me scratching my head.
