Description of Work: I needed to replace the flooring in a large house I just purchased. My dogs had absolutely destroyed the acacia wood flooring I had installed when the house was built. I looked around at multiple flooring providers but finally settled on Macadam because they had helped with design when my house was built. I was nervous about using them because their showroom is so nice, I figured I would be paying a premium for material and installation to support their shiny showroom. Turns out my skepticism was completely without warrant. I worked with Rick and immediately he started to narrow down products that I could use to satisfy my flooring requirements. I originally wanted to use tile because it is durable, easy to clean, and my dogs wouldn’t be able to destroy it. Rick told me that was all true but he also added that it would be quite expensive to install. Rather than charging me a premium for tile (he could have made triple the money off me) he pointed me towards Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring. LVP looks just like hardwood flooring except that it is water proof, dirt proof, and dog proof. It is used in many commercial settings including high traffic retail and restaurants. After doing my own research and visiting some business that have it installed, I decided the product was a perfect fit. I worked with Rick to come up with a plan to demolish my old floor and install the new LVP. His team came onsite to take measurements and answer my questions about the entire process. I was given a very reasonable price quote, much less than I expected and more competitive than quotes I received from other places. I placed the order and within weeks the product arrived and his team was onsite to knock out the install. The installation was smooth, they moved my furniture around, demolished my old floor and installed the new floor in just 1 day. The crew was all business, no goofing around, just work work work. They hauled away the old floor and all the packing material. They cleaned up after themselves and left me with a pristine, brand new floor. The entire installation was flawless and could not have gone any better. I love to complain, it is almost a hobby of mine, but my experience with Macadam has left me with absolutely nothing to complain about. The entire process was perfect from start to finish including the price. I would definitely do business with them again

Description of Work: Macadam put in new floors on our main level. Their subcontractors were stellar, and I'd give an A to them. Macadam itself botched a bunch of details along the way, were very slow in completing the job and lost records of payments we had made. In the end it worked out ok, but I can't give them an A.

I don't remember as to how much I had paid them. They had a designer who came to my house and helped me pick out some things that would match with some of the backsplash tile that I already had. She helped me with the color. I was remodeling the whole upstairs in my house and she tied it all together with the wall color. They were a top-notch company who did great service. They had a very good selection. They were a very good company. I have gone to them a number of times for several years. They were a super professional company but a little low-key. They would like their clients to make an appointment with them so they could focus on each of them when they came. I did not realise that during my first visit and so, I had to wait for a little time. But, they came out and helped me which was very nice. Later, when I wanted some more time with them, I made an appointment. I would recommend them to other members. I thought their price was a little expensive but I was not sure.

They were dishonest in their business practices, or bait-and-switched or double-dipped. I am happy to speak to anyone about the specific issues with Macadam work ethic, practices and specific vendors. There were problems but Macadam stood by their vendors and wouldn't admit them! The bath surround tile was placed in the wrong pattern! Yet they refused to admit anything was wrong. Even though it was their vendor - who Macadam had used for years, but did not their last name or CCB number. That's when I looked into another person to do the work, but it would have cost me an extra $2K. They begged me to use their vendor again via an e-mail; (QUOTING DIRECTLY FROM THEIR E-MAIL), “Balance due upon satisfaction of the job: $774.41” -- however then they told me I had to pay for the new tiles that they originally stated I would only have to pay HALF because their vendor screwed up the pattern. Then they told me it would be another $1000.00 above that. Then the work started -- all the while thinking they would honor their $774.41 I should have known that if they were bad the first time, they would be the next. Their own document stating “UPON MY SATISFACTION FOR $774.41." was a lie. They started adding costs and bending the truth and yet another week unable to use my shower/bath. I paid again and again for bad technicians and an unscrupulous company. Forget help from a lawyer -- she said I'd never win in court. That was more good money after bad. CAUTION - not even their own words in writing can be trusted. There are little things that also went wrong; bad painting – and I paid for that to be done again. The floor guy placed masking tape over something the painters JUST painted and I had to pay for that to be repainted. Extreme caution.

They were perfectly good, but I ended up with another company that I liked better. She was very gracious and she called me back later. She very openly wanted to know why I thought someone else was better and so I shared that information with her. They were very helpful. One of the side reasons was that they were training a new guy to do the estimates and I wasn't sure how it would work. The actual fabricator came to do the bid and I liked him very much.

After viewing carpets at several other retailers we found a great selection at Macadam and very reasonable prices. They were very helpful, even calling me after hours at my convenience in order to set up the estimate appointment. Samir helped us with carpet selection and even though they do not normally give out samples he allowed us to take the sample books overnight to check the colors. I was very nervous about this part as the house has polarized windows which changes how colors look. They were able to push the order through quickly once we made a decision and installed the carpet in the entire house in only 1 day. I was disappointed that they did not vacuum after they completed work, but as I have never installed carpet I am not sure if that is normal. They also marked up the walls a bit, but we have no baseboards and I do not know how it could have been avoided. We expected some minor paint scuffs so it was not a surprise. Overall I would use them again, they were very flexible and quick and the carpet looks great!
Description of Work: We bought a house and replaced the entire carpet, approx 1600 sq ft, including 2 stairwells.

Macadam hires sub-contractors (to limit cost) They are inconsistent in the estimates & promises -- all the while sacrificing the client as they stand behind their workers. The sign reads, "A tradition of excellence", but I think "The initiation of failure". Please watch your dealings with them. Prior to work, a letter was sent stating they could place a lien on my house. The tile company was the main problem. They were supposed to be great; however, dealing with the son was very difficult as I personally found him to be passive-aggressive and less than truthful and speaking for the father who he claimed didn't speak English well. I could not find out if they were licensed as Mr. Dean (from Macadam) did not know their last name. They misread the instructions and laid the tiles in the wrong pattern and placed the white stripe/border in the wrong position. Even when faced with this they took no responsibility for doing so – making excuses and recreating math to show they were correct and it was my fault. Mr. Dean stood by his workers and tried to cajole me into accepting financial responsibility to get it done all over again. All the while Mr. Dean would vacillate promising me the "job isn't done until it's done to your approval". When I finally told him I had hired someone else. He quickly made a grand gesture to allow the same tilers to fix the mistakes and complete the job. I was specifically told by Mr. Dean, if they did it (sans his son) than it would "cost you nothing". Then I was e-mailed an estimate for $774.41 including mud/paint the walls. So I canceled the professional and allowed them. Job was OK, but they were careless around my house (e.g. not flushing toilet, fingerprints). Then I was told they don't mud/ paint. Again Mr. Dean wanted me to pay half for this part in light of the fact that his workmen who caused it to be redone. I agreed to get my shower again. Again at Macadam's office to finalize the arrangements I was presented with a bill (but was told I didn't have to do final pay until the job was done & I was satisfied). The new amount was >$2,000 not the $774.41 as previously agreed. Mr. Dean couldn't figure out how his associate came up with the 774, as I owed $2K. At that point I walked out and sent a cashier's check via certified mail for the $774.41. Deception, excuses and inferior workers (with unknown CCB ratings or licenses). The original painter he used got paint on the grout (prior to my need to replace it) and put actual masking tape over new paint, ruining it and causing me to pay someone else to repaint it. ONE EXCEPTION was Pat Rivera the floor person. He appeared to do a good job, was neat, punctual and very easy to work with and have in my home. I would definitely hire Mr. Rivera again, but NOT if he were associated with Macadam. * Update * The owner has since contacted me and says that he is going to attempt to repair the situation.
Description of Work: Initially tile bath counter and install sink and painted the bathroom - which was done OK (painter a little sloppy). Then dry rot was found, so I needed to replace flooring and decided to replace not just the damaged tile, but all the tile surrounding bath/shower and a new bathtub.

We engaged Macadam a few years ago to replace carpeting with oak in a 21-by-23 foot great-room. They did a great job. Not surprisingly, when we needed to create a new glass-tile backsplash they were on our short list of potential firms. We met with the folks there on a Saturday and they were patient at trying to match our (imperfect) vision with appropriate products. They even had an on-site designer who was able to make some very useful suggestions. We took some samples home (twice) and quickly converged on specific products. In parallel with this, they arranged for a talented craftsman (Sergey) to come and take measurements so they could create an accurate quote. The proposal was clear, unambiguous, and showed great value for the money. We accepted and placed a deposit. Within about 2 weeks the materials came in and the installation was scheduled. Sergey and Anton arrived when they promised and after verifying one more time that the materials matched what we ordered proceeded to carefully and quickly remove the original 3-inch tall granite backsplash and prepare the wall for the full glass tile. They then installed the tile, keeping it "tight" where it met the granite counters; the original space between the countertop and upper cabinets wasn't strictly constant (since the countertop sloped about 1/2 inch over the 6 feet from the oven to the corner) but Sergey was able to make sure this wouldn't be visible unless someone stuck their head up under the cabinets with a tape measure! Similarly, they cut and fitted the glass tiles to fill the gaps between the over-the-stove microwave and the adjacent upper cabinets - as well as around the two windowsills in the corner. Finally, they applied a beautiful "oyster gray" grout the designer recommended (which brought together the blue glass and the brown granite counters) and cleaned up thoroughly. The end result? My wife, who left for her office in the morning returned home at dinnertime to find the glass backsplash she had dreamed of having. It's as if Santa and the tile elves arrived two months early - and we didn't even have to leave out milk and cookies! Needless to say, it's something we enjoy and that will enhance the value of our home.
Description of Work: Installation of a mosaic glass tile backsplash (complete coverage between countertop and upper cabinets) on two walls. Project included removal of an existing 3" granite backsplash, surface prep, installation and grouting and cleanup. There was about 32 square feet of area and the work needed to be done without disturbing the existing cabinets nor the windows.

The company representative was usually unresponsive in returning calls about the status of our order; the orders were later than promised by over a month; and one item was improperly sized and the company completely dropped the ball for more than three months. The work was to have been completed in May of 2008 but the final and correct installation was not done until the middle of October 2008. The company subcontracts to a Home Depot contractor for installation and, while the installer staff were pleasant and courteous people, they were not particularly proactive in completing the work. The primary business for Macadam Floor & Design is flooring. They may be OK at that but their window coverings division is downright awful.

The initial installation in the Fall of 2007 was not done well: stair nosing was the wrong specie of mahogany and there were gaps between the stair nosing and the flooring. Macadam's crew returned and attempted to repair their defects and, in the process created two additional problems: poor fit to the nosing wood (filled with a dark putty) and an improper nailing job that caused a splinter in the flooring material. Macadam promised in November 2007 to remedy the problem. They did nothing and calls were either not returned or Macadam staff said that someone would contact us and that did not happen. On the 26th of August 2007, after another error in scheduling a crew of four workers showed up: only one of whom spoke English. The crew installed new plank flooring and moved the gap from the nosing to further into the middle of the flooring area. One of the crew stood up and knocked an art print off the wall breaking the glass and frame (the artwork, a limited edition print, is OK). The crew cleanup left sawdust and dirt around the work site.

This company installed hardwood floor without allowing any time for the wood to acclimate and when they installed it, they glued down the boards around the edges. The salesman was not knowledgeable about different types of hardwood, something we found out later. (Our fault, we should have done our research beforehand and not trusted a salesman.) When we started having problems within 2 weeks of installation they took months to address the problem and then they basically told us, "too bad, that's the floor you picked out."

I am awaiting completion of my tile and carpet projects from Macadam. They have a deposit from me, so I have to wait it out. I will update my report when the work is completed. In the meantime, be warned that the responsiveness has been terrible. It has been since Feb that they have had my deposit. Since that time, I've found calls aren't returned very quickly, samples took weeks, commitments made (for samples, proposals, etc.) are made and almost never kept. The latest straw that prompted me to submit this? Last Thursday, I was told work would start the next Tuesday. Called today. No response back, but talked with installer (who will be contracting with me separately for some work) and tells me that there is no way the work will be starting tomorrow. So far, a frustrating experience, despite a nice showroom and products and reasonable design advice. So far, I would have gone elsewhere if I hadn't given them a deposit. Who knows - they may only want to do large projects.
