Description of Work: We had Scott and Scott come out to look at bidding on a basement remodel project. We really liked them, and they had a very easy, communicative style. They had been recommended to us by a colleague who had used them extensively for a remodel several years back. We had provided them with a list and a drawing detailing what we would like to have done. They did spend about an hour with us on March 13, and said they'd get back to us. On April 4 we received a bid for "pre-construction services" for $850. This was a bid for providing a detailed bid. While I appreciate that it takes time to come up with an accurate bid, this seemed excessive, considering the size of the job we were considering. | |Very nice, very knowledgeable guys. I'm sure they would have done a terrific job. But the cost would have been out of our range.

It went wonderfully well. Scott and Scott came over to discuss my ideas, they came back with drawings and suggestions. I went with their ideas for painting the dark woodwork in the kitchen and I am so glad I did. It looks fantastic. They brought over the cost estimates and time lines and started to work within a reasonable time. All their workers were professional very skilled. The project was fairly extensive and took about a month to complete. The result is lovely. Clean-up was done each evening Scott checked in regularly, they guided me in my search for a front door and for a company to install louvers in the new windows to replace shades. I found all their recommendations sound and reliable. The whole process was so well done and we were very pleased. Riggs and Martin were wonderful to work with.
Description of Work: New windows in living room, and 5 windows in nook. Added wainscot in nook, painted kitchen and nook, did new woodwork around all windows and painted them; painted all woodwork in kitchen. Also they replaced cheap crown moulding in nook with very nice moulding and installed a new front door.

It was kind of funny because there were five of us on the street who remodeled our houses at the same time, and I think 3 of them went with Riggs & Martin. We went with someone else. We had specific ideas about what we wanted done. Riggs & Martin came in and said "well no, you don't want it done that way, you want it this way." They weren't always listening to us as to what we wanted done. Also, their quote was $40,000 over what we paid. We wanted a certain siding material and they said "no you don't what this material, you want this kind." They had experience working with our designer, but they didn't like him. We figured we wanted someone who would get along with our designer, so we opted to go with another company. But, we've seen Riggs & Martin's work in the neighborhood and they do very good work.
Description of Work: It was a quote for a remodel in general. It was for a new addition.

Response from Riggs & Martin Inc
We appreciate the comments by The Member. We are always interested in hearing about ways to improve our relationships with our customers. Riggs & Martin, Inc. will always try to share our experiences with our customers, good or bad, about any product, trade contractor, or professional. We hope that by sharing these experiences, we help our customers make the best decisions for their remodeling project. For the record, we gave The Member a free written estimate for their remodel, not a firm quote. At the time, we were trying to establish a budget by estimating the costs. The designer’s plan that we were estimating from was not complete and specifications for the job had not yet been established. The estimate that we provided in 2001 had a budget range of $133,000 – $151,000 and also included a couple of options. These numbers are less than the approximate cost of $160,000 for the project stated by The Member in this report.

Scott Riggs and Scott Weaver, the owners of the company, did a great job. Even though they were incredibly busy at the time, they communicated very well and professionally. They gave us lots of good advice and were very careful not to make promises they couldn't keep. Their small team self performed some of the finish carpentry and other finish work, but most of the work was subbed out to an excellent group of trustworthy subs. They also really stand by their work and are conscientious about fixing punch list items. I think Scott Weaver did an excellent job of tracking and accounting for the many small adjustments we made to the plan, and Scott Riggs did an excellent job of consulting on the design, especially the kitchen and bathrooms. Basically, Scott and Scott are a couple of straightforward, stand up guys who really know their stuff. The only problem we had was with the painter, and that was because we made them hire a cheaper sub. Riggs and Martin wasn't the cheapest contractor out there, but if you need a big job done right and on schedule, call them.
Description of Work: Riggs & Martin essentially gutted our 3500 square foot house down to the studs and rebuilt it: New roof, new electrical, new furnace, new ductwork, all new plumbing including tankless water heater, extensive framing throughout, 200 sq. foot addition with foundation, new meranti deck with some serious footings, new garage floor slab, new foundation drains, 2 full bathroom remodels with all fixtures, major kitchen remodel with custom cabinets and high end appliances, new trim and built in bookshelves on the main floor, concrete retaining wall to stabilize foundation, new hardwoods throughout top floor, 32 new windows (many in new locations). It was a huge job with a lot of subs to manage, and they pulled it off in about 5 months.
Nobody believes us when we tell them what a great experience we had with Riggs and Martin. Scott Riggs has a wealth of knowledge and experience that he brings to his designs and his craft. Every aspect of the job was done with the utmost skill and craftsmanship. They gave us a 9-week schedule of work detailing exactly what would happen each day, and they never deviated from it -- not once. They left the work site clean every day, and finished exactly on time and within budget. When we had a few minor items that weren't working quite right they had somebody on site to fix it within hours of our call. Scott Riggs and Scott Weaver are both a pleasure to work with, as are all of their workers and subcontractors. Their outstanding services do come at a higher price, but you will not be disappointed with the quality of their work, courtesy, punctuality, dependability, and ability to stick to a budget. They are truly outstanding in their field; we can't recommend them highly enough.
Description of Work: They helped us design and completely remodel our kitchen and great room. Our house is a fixer, and the kitchen was down to the studs when we moved in, so we really started from scratch. Scott Riggs walked us through the kitchen design. The work included (partial list only) moving a window, removing and walling up a door, laying hardwood flooring throughout the great room, installing skylights, drywall, painting, installing lighting, and completely installing all components of the kitchen. We wanted to do the tiling in the kitchen ourselves, and they set up all of the counters for us to do that. It was a big job, and we have somewhat eclectic taste.

Scott reviewed the bathroom and discussed our plans with us, offering some suggestions for material options, and advises for the project. We received a very detailed estimate for budgeting purposes only as requested, with a very quick turnaround time. The estimate was unfortunately much higher than anticipated or budgeted, and not competitive vis-a-vis several other contractors that we received bids from (ca. $13,000-14,000 range).
Description of Work: Requested estimate for a main bathroom remodel/facelift (approx. 5 x 8'), including partial drywall demo; add drywall; installation of new fixtures and trim; new lighting, outlets, and fan; and new tile floor and shower surround.

Response from Riggs & Martin Inc
The estimate that we provided was a budget estimate based on our experience, having done many similar projects, and contained many assumptions since few decisions had actually be made. The estimate range that the member states that he received from other contractors is less than what we estimated to be our costs to do the project. We have a high ethical standard of doing business and only give realistic estimates, and then do the actual work on a fixed price contract once the scope is finalized. We do not "low ball" estimates just to get our foot in the door, only to charge for multiple changes later, as some unethical contractors have been know to do. Our pricing has always been competitive when compared to other estimates which contain "apples to apples" scope of work done by a high quality residential remodeling company. Scott Weaver

These guys are as good as they come. They have been professional and punctual. Their workers and subcontractors clean up after themselves each day. The subcontractors have been uniformly high quality. On the two times when subcontractor work was less than satisfactory, Riggs & Martin were right on it, and the subs were then diligent in making it right. Since our excellent experience with Riggs & Martin in 2000 I have recommended them to several others, who have also had favorable experiences. Their prices may not be the lowest of competitive bids, but you'll get excellent work for a fair price from Riggs & Martin.
