I live in an area with a layer of clay between the sod/top soil and the lower well-draining soil. Rain water would hit the sod and have nowhere to go because the clay is non-penetrable. The slope of my yard allowed all the water-soaked sod to drain to my foundation walls and was accelerating the 80-year old basement walls' deterioration. Since the house is situated on a fairly flat, raised lot with existing 80-100 year old houses surrounding it, re-grading of the lawn and surrounding yard was not an option. The solution proposed by Lee at Landscape East/West was the installation of a French drain and dry-well system, that would allow the rainwater to drain away before it reached the foundation walls. Relocation of existing sprinkler heads away from the foundation was also done to prevent water from collecting against the foundation. The crew was phenomenal. During one of the worst storms this winter (days on end of torrential rain and 40 degree temperatures) they were out in my yard all day everyday for a week digging trenches and giant holes, laying pipe and rock, and tearing out old plants. When they were done it was like a new yard: clean and refreshed with everything in it's place. The existing sod was preserved, fresh mulch/bark was laid down and surprisingly attractive river rock covers the system of drains. They also disconnected one side of my house's downspouts from the sewer line and fed it directly into a dedicated dry-well and extended the irrigation system to feed three tiered flower beds at the front of the house with drip lines. UPDATE: I have since contacted Landscape E/W again to obtain an estimate for ongoing yard maintenance, for which I received an estimate promptly and I decided not to accept. This was due to placing monetary priority on other parts of my home for the time being. However, subsequent inquiries for further work (not related to the yard maintenance) have yielded no response. I have attempted email and phone communication without an answer. This leads me to believe that they place a priority on higher priced projects rather than wanting to deal with smaller piece-meal maintenance. This is very disappointing to me and I have since revised my Ratings down from all A's to reflect this latest interaction. UPDATE 2: Lee at Landscape E/W finally got back to me and apologized profusely for his lapse in communication. He arranged for most of the small items to be done free of charge and I'm happy to say I'll be using them again the in the future.
Description of Work: Installed French drains, dry-wells and relocated sprinkler heads away from foundation. Extended irrigation system to raised/tiered beds with drip lines and removed old plants and prepared beds for new plantings in the spring.

Christin Bryk of landscapes east and west worked really hard to design the yard to fit within our budget. She is so professional and personable. She reworked the previous design and came up with a design that still addressed our priorities and gave us a wonderful outdoor space. Jamie, the job foreman, is great. When I had a concern he came right over and came up with good ideas to address our drainage problems. The 2 crew men worked so hard for almost 3 weeks. They worked during the week we had the terrible weather and kept the job on schedule. Christin also came by during the job to see how things were progressing. Honestly, I can't say enough good things about this company. If you want a company that is professional, responsible, a good value, great crew who work hard and very respectable of your property then hire Landscapes E&W. You will not regret it. Jill Bunker
Description of Work: This is the second time we have used Landscapes East & West. The first time was the front yard and this time the backyard. Both were major renovations. For the backyard we had a patio installed, basalt stairs put in, french drains, irrigation for lawn and plants and sod lawn installed.

We had a great experience working with this company. The person who coordinated our project, Christin, had superior customer service skills, which to me made the company stand above so many other companies we've worked with on our 100-year old house. She was very professional, but also friendly and a real pleasure to work with. I had a rough idea of what I wanted for our landscape, and she worked patiently alongside us, presenting us options along the way, to help us come up with a plan. I really appreciate that she was patiently responsive to all of our many questions and concerns, she always returned calls and emails and followed up on anything that needed follow-up. The only small hiccup was in the timing of the project. They started about 2 weeks after they had originally said. But we had the work done late in the season, so I understand that jobs before us took longer than expected. But once the work started, it was done within the promised timeframe and professionally. All in all, we would recommend this company to anyone.
Description of Work: Landscape East and West installed a retaining wall, new sod in our front yard, an irrigation system for the lawn and beds, planted our parking strip, and replanted many of our existing beds.

It was such a pleasure being part of the renovation of your garden that surrounds your beautiful home. The older homes have so much character and I really enjoy creating an outdoor space that surrounds them. Thank you for taking the time to post this review. I apologize that our timing was delayed in starting your project. This is great feedback and hope to improve our scheduling of future projects. Sincerely, Christin Bryk

Everything went very well. The price was a little higher than I had hoped, but it was due to the difficulty of transporting 9 tons of rock from the roadside to our backyard using a handcart to come up the steep front yard. The only other way to reach the back would have been by using stairs, which would have been even more difficult. The crew used great care to fit the rocks together perfectly. They were also very careful to protect existing plants--removing and replacing those they were unable to work around--and to protect the irrigation system and move any heads in the path of the new wall. They covered the lawn with tarps while transporting rocks, gravel and fill to protect it. The whole job took about 5 days and when the wall was complete, the crew replaced the plants they'd had to move, and applied bark dust above and below the wall to cover the area that had been disturbed by the construction. It looks great.
Description of Work: They removed a wooden retaining wall and replaced it with a wall of basalt stone (approx 70 ft long x 2 ft high)

I had Landscape East & West come out and give me a quote for removing a bunch of rocks/pebbles from my walk way and replace ot all with pavers. Lee C. showed up as scheduled on both appointments. He was very prepared and gave very good information. He was able to answer every question we had. I felt very comfortable having his team do the work. On the scheduled day to start, Jeremy showed up with his helper. It was over 80 degrees, but they jumped in and started doing what was told to us. Jeremy is one of the hardest working people I have met. He did not let up at all in the four days that it took to do the new pathway. Wow what a beautiful piece of work. Any issues were immediately addressed. Lee had looked at the color that we thought we wanted and advised us it was not that pretty. As such, he asked if could substitute with another that he saw and thought it was more what we wanted. Wow was it! It was just beautiful and we have gotten many compliments on it. In closing, Jeremy is a great, hard working, and professional person and represents the company in a very high standard! Lee is just the same. He does what he says and stands by it. With this type of professionalism and quality, I have no problem paying the bill. THANK YOU Jeremy and Lee!

Called for a bid. He was on time for our appointment, but never sent me a bid. I got the feeling that the work was not important to him if we weren't spending enough money. He asked several times what our price range was and I told him, I wasn't sure. That is why we were getting bids, because we had no idea what the project would cost. I am disappointed because we truly had not decided how much we would spend and he wasted my time.

First, I would like to start with an apology with regards to any misunderstanding between the member and my sales associate. A big part of the sales process for us is to qualify the customer with respect to time line, budget, and scope of project. When my sales person met with this member, he discussed the expected sales price of this project at $10 - $12 thousand. When meeting at the members home and determining that additional support work would be necessary, my sales person informed the customer that the price would probably increase $2 thousand on top of the initial estimate. At that point, the member indicated that the pricing for the project was more than double the price they expected. Given that the project would require design time and more time to prepare the detailed estimate, the member was told by my sales associate that he would wait to prepare a formal written bid until the member had some time to think about the price range and that he would wait to here from the member prior to taking further action. The member never contacted my sales associate after that conversation. The member is correct that they never got a written bid, but my sales associate did provide a verbal price range. He also asked for the member to provide a response with respect to preparing a formal bid, which he never received. I apologize for the misunderstanding and if the member would like to proceed with the project, I would be happy to have one of my sales associates contact them.

The whole experience was one of the best ones we have had with a contractor. Everyone on this project was professional and responsive. Project started and finished on time and within the estimated time frame and budget. A great experience.
Description of Work: We had our front yard landscaped along with having a stone wall and paver path installed in the front yard from the sidewalk to our front door. We also had the back yard landscaped and we had an irrigation system installed in both yards. We had wanted to have native plants in both yards that were low maintenance, and also wanted plantings in our back yard that will provide some screening from our neighbors. Christin was our designer and she really listened to our wish list and understood that we don't really know what we are doing. Her expertise and professionalism was very refreshing and much needed! Her ideas were great and we were able to reuse many of our existing plants.

We contacted Landscape East & West for an estimate, one of four we received for our retaining wall project. Although we ended up choosing another contractor, Landscape E&W was a close second. Christin was attentive to our questions and provided a lot of excellent suggestions and design guidance. She offered us a very thorough and professional proposal, complete with "line-item" options. She was the only contractor we met who presented her proposal in a personal meeting. One reason that we did not end up using Landscape E&W was the cost. We're confident that they would have provided exceptional service and a terrific finished product. However, we ended up going with a less-expensive option AND a different type of product than Landscape E&W offered.
Description of Work: Christin gave us an estimate on our landscaping project on behalf of Landscape East & West. The project included two 3 foot retaining walls. In our two meetings, she came with design ideas and options, as well as design drawings.

My yard had been mostly dirt and weeds since moving in to my home more than a year before and it was time to finally have some real landscaping done. I have zero experience with plants or yard-creation so I decided to find a professional. Landscape East & West had excellent reviews on Angie's list so I filled out an online form requesting more information. Christin called me right away to discuss my situation. She was able to give me a rough estimate over the phone, and we set up an appt. for her to come see and evaluate my lawn in person. I explained that I had very little experience with landscaping and she walked me through everything step by step. I knew I wanted a yard that was bright and clean and modern and required minimal work to maintain. Christin created a plan that was exactly what I asked for and drew it up with her CAD program so I could get a better idea of the finished product. She even made out different plans at different price points while I figured out how much I'd be able to spend. Keep in mind Christin had done all of this BEFORE I had even signed a contract. In early June it was my pleasure to call Christin and move forward with Landscape East & West. She explained that a 2 man crew would take two days to complete the job and I was put on the schedule for June 28th and 29th. On the 28th Christin arrived with the crew at exactly 8am. She explained to them precisely where everything should go and they got right to work. On day one the men removed the top layer of my soil and what few existing plants I had. They layed down fresh, amended topsoil and placed the 18 2'X2' walking stones exactly where Christin had shown them. On day two, again starting at exactly 8am, they planted all of the plants, fertilized the soil and cleaned up and extra dirt, leaves, and branches. The men were friendly, efficient, and never needed a single thing from me. At the end of day two, Christin came back for a walk through. I told her I couldn't have been more pleased with my new yard. She gave me tips about watering and maintenance and I gave her a check. That was it! In 48 hours my yard went from ghastly to gorgeous!
Description of Work: Evaluation of yard and old landscaping, consulted with me to create new landscape plan which used plants I already had to save me money, amended soil and put in walking stones and landscaping, fertilized soil and finally did a walk through and explained how to best take care of my new yard. Basically did EVERYTHING.

It went smoothly as described above.
Description of Work: The project manager (Lee) helped us refine the landscaping work scope and was a good listener throughout our yard transformation. The crew arrived on time daily and were professional and hard-working. While some contract modifications were needed during the course of the work, resulting in higher expense, we felt the costs were fair for the substantial improvements we're now enjoying. Landscape E-W re-shaped many shrub beds, upgraded the irrigation system, built basalt and gravel paths and a small patio, trimmed trees, planted many shrubs and perennials.

Met with Cody from Landscape East & West, he responded to my phone inquiry in a timely. Cody was on time for the appointment and understood the scope of the project. He offered ideas and different ways to approach what we were trying to accomplish. We selected another contractor for the project. The decision was not based on cost alone but what we felt was the ?best value?. Many factors were considered; schedule, materials, approach, and what my gut told me. The proposal did not contain any negative factors; the contractor selected had more positive factors.
Description of Work: Backyard Makeover We had a 671 square foot deck that covered most of the back yard; it was in need of repair and refinishing. After looking at the quote to fix what we had and not getting anything more appealing, it was decided to remove the deck and start with a clean canvas. We then had 2 areas that need some type of hardscape, one 10x10 that is covered and the other is a 5x5 landing for a door from the master. In addition the remaining 500 or so square feet needed treatment. The soil that was under the deck is clay and nothing will grow in that stuff. With such a small area, we were not inclined to make separate “outdoor rooms” that is the trend today and with resale 3-5 years down the road ROI was a concern. We elected to go Ipe decking for the hardscape and sod with irrigation and a French drain for the remaining area.

I was clear in my initial call that I needed not only a company to do the labor but also aid in my design. Lee was prompt for the estimate appointment and left me a helpful booklet on plants. However he told me that until I had a landscape designer draw up a plan they would be unable to work with me. First of all, it is difficult to provide a quality response considering the name of the customer complaining is not in our database. Based on the records we have for that timeframe for a customer in Wilsonville, the situation was as follows: Lee met with the customer on March 25, 2010. She had a 7k budget and was very unsure of the design that she was wanting but in the conversation the things that she was describing appeared to be $14-$18k worth of work. She said that she would be needing to phase the job at that cost. For jobs of this magnitude where a customer is not 100% certain of what they want, we always recommend a landscape design be completed so that an accurate cost can be bid. Lee provided the customer with the contact information of one of our partner designers so that she could have the plan drawn so that the phased in project could be completed in the correct order. We do not provide free design services, nor do we start or bid jobs without a clear scope of service. This allows us to provide a quality service to our customers. If you would like to call and discuss your situation with me further, I would be happy to take your call. Steve 503-256-5302

There was one problem with a sub who did not perform as expected but it was handled completely professionally by the contractor until the desired result was achieved. Overall the project was a complete success.
Description of Work: Landscape East and West was our Landscape contractor for a full scale renovation of our front yard. The hardscape included installation of concrete stairs and walkway, rails, and pavers. Plants and grass were installed and irrigation was re-worked and lighting installed. Every step of the way the service was exceptional. There were some real challenges with this project but each was handled pro-actively with the focus always on service to the customer. The subs they used were amazing overall and all personnel associated with LE&W were thoroughly professional and skilled. Bjorn was always ready with suggestions when they were needed in the plan. Kirk and his crew did excellent work. Kirk checked with us many times during the process to be keep us informed and be sure we were pleased with the work. They even voluntarily threw in some additional labor. After regrading the front bed and removing weeds in the process, they voluntarily weeded the side yard bed to the fence to make it look nice. A worker was sent out promptly to level the valve box when we asked that that be done. The only slight negative - Initially after we requested a bid, we waited about a month for the bid and then emailed to check on it. When asked what led to the delay, Kirk said he didn't really have an answer for us. Other than that, this was a good experience and they did great work.

After we got the water feature running they took us through the whole yard & explained the sprinkler system to us, tested each of the zones, showed us our water meter and how to test for leaks, and were just really, really helpful. I was so impressed that they came out to do all this for us on a job they did 10 years ago, and there was no charge. They have definitely earned my future business!
Description of Work: We moved into a new home and the previous owners had hired Landscape East & West 10 years ago to completely redo the yard. It was terraced, landscaped, and had a substantial fountain/waterfall installed. Every time we turned on the waterfall the pond level would go down, so we thought there was a problem. Kirk and an employee who originally worked on the project both came out within a couple days of when I called. It was an easy fix for them (the water had been turned off to the water feature & sprinklers for winter), and we were relieved that there wasn't actually a problem.

We are working on a project with them, but they haven't done the work as yet. He is very good and very professional. The landscaping mainly includes patios and rock work. We also have to have some grading done because the new house was not located properly in terms of grade according to code. He is going to be doing grading to fix that, so it is remedial work. He will do drainage because we are on a slope and we have to get the water moving in another direction besides into the house. It is a big job. He has been very professional and has brought in an excellent designer who we are working with. He is very accurate in his bidding. He is very thorough and pulls all the details together, things that I don't know we need, but he does because that's his business. During the construction when we had our house re-sited he provided me with the drawing I need to have for locating the flashing for the patio steps. It sounds silly, but it was important. His punctuality was excellent. He is a licensed landscape architect and is very professional.
Description of Work: The landscaping company came out a month ago and gave us an estimate on landscaping a half acre.

Arrived hours late, after I called to inquire whether they were still coming. Did replace sprinkler heads. Yard is sinking where they dug up sprinkler line - should have mounded dirt more to allow for changes with rain. Leak improved, but not fixed. Window well work wasn't exactly what we had in mind - they just stacked cement blocks, we had asked for something that would help keep water out of the window well. 2 of the 3 bushes they "removed" have sprouted regrowth. We were initlally impressed during the assessment and bidding process, but given the above, we would not use this company again.
Description of Work: Replace heads on existing sprinkler system to improve efficiency, fix leak, build up window well walls, weed front beds, remove 3 bushes.

After seeing this review, I had the salesperson responsible for the job call immediately. Landscape East & West provides a minimum one year warranty on all work. This was the first we had heard from the customer of a problem with the work completed. A crew was sent out to make the corrections to the minor settling of the soil. There was no sign of a water leak as mentioned above and after discussions with the client, no further action was needed. The client indicated their satisfaction with the work and has requested a bid for additional work at their home.

From start to finish, job went extremely smooth. Kirk Lobb was professional and efficient and made timely contacts throughout the job keeping me updated on what would happen next. The crew was very friendly and knowledgeable, and didn't complain when they found the digging on my property extremely rocky, and in fact broke some of their equipment - they just smiled and said "oh well!" The lawn looks spectacular; we've received many compliments and I couldn't have picked a better company for the job - I would highly recommend this company and plan on using them again for lawn and landscape maintenance.
Description of Work: Installed new irrigation system, enhanced soil and hydroseeded new lawn for approximately 5,000 sq feet.

We appreciate the opportunity to serve you. Your irrigation system turned out to be one of the most effecient systems we have ever installed! Going with the "Smart Controller" and pressure regulated heads were a couple really great decisions. The controller will manage the watering of shady lawn area better then we could ever do manually. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks, Kirk

Two days after calling an estimator came and reviewed the work to be done. The estimator was the person who actually did the work so he knew just what we wanted. The estimate was lower than others we had received. On the scheduled day they arrived on time, did all the work as planned plus some additional cleanup 'to make it look nice'. There was no charge for the additional work. They reviewed the work with me and showed me where all the buried parts of the (esisting) irrigation system were located. We were super impressed and plan to use them again.
Description of Work: Remove a section of lawn and replace with lava rock. Remove an 8' high tree and 2 shrubs.
