The tech was on-time, congenial and courteous. He removed the cover from my Rheem 80 gas furnace and went right to work inspecting and cleaning the accessible parts of the furnace. I didn't stand and watch his every move. A bit later, he called me back down to let me know that he saw what he believed to be two cracks in the heat exchanger which he claimed could allow carbon monoxide gas (CO) into the house through the heating ducts. He tried to show me the cracks but I couldn't see them clearly and even he admitted that they were not that obvious. Anyway, he whipped out some what i call "scare literature" to support the need for replacing the entire furnace to avoid being poisoned by CO. He urged me to call their office to have a salesman come out to discuss my replacement options, as they do sell furnaces. He wrote up his findings and placed a red tag on the furnace that mentioned the two supposed cracks. His write-up also suggested keeping windows open a crack to dissipate any CO that might build up. As a 50 year consumer turned informed skeptic, I called Northwest Natural Gas, because they will do free annual inspections; something I had forgotten and otherwise I would not have spent the money with A-Temp or any other merchant. NNG had one of their techs out the following week. He spent some time viewing the heat exchanger and performed several tests. He used a very sensitive gas detector at several locations near heating ducts and found absolutely no sign of carbon monoxide anywhere. He also could not see, with any certainty, splits or cracks in the exchanger. A "flare" test didn't give any evidence of the passage of air through it's wall. My take-away from all of this is that these $79 inspections are as much a sale tool as anything else. Using overblown scare tactics to persuade trusting homeowners to replace good furnaces with years of life still in them is a questionable business practice, at best. I did get my furnace cleaned and inspected, and at least got a heads-up on a potential issue which turned out to be not much of an issue after all. When in doubt, get a free unbiased second opinion from Northwest Natural (for gas appliances). I am not employed by NNG or any other company.

Response from A-Temp Heating & Cooling Inc
On March 18th our technician arrived at Member's house to perform a safety inspection and cleaning. He responded to a marketing piece that entered him into a drawing for a $100 gift card as well as capturing our $118 tune up at a discounted rate. Our Client Care Representative recorded that Member's furnace was 22 years old. We find this information important to know prior to arriving so that we send a technician with plenty of field experience with older furnaces. Our technician performed a complete tune up on Member's equipment including performing some minor wire repairs, noting one of the motors was pulling high amps so he oiled it to try and prolong the life. During the safety inspection of his heat exchanger the technician discovered what he believes to be two separate cracks in two separate cells in the heat exchanger. Standard practice is to show the customer what we saw with our inspection camera. It is also standard practice to show the customer our book of heat exchanger failures which is a published national book that documented the common areas in nearly every brand and style of heat exchanger where cracks are found. Another standard practice is to show the customer a laminated copy of the statement from the National Gas Association that says a cracked heat exchanger either needs to be replaced with a new heat exchanger or the entire unit needs to be replaced. In none of our literature or our weekly training meetings do we practice "scare tactics". We also don't make any claims that carbon monoxide IS leaking into the airstream of his home, our position is that with a crack in a heat exchanger the carbon monoxide COULD leak into the air stream which is a fact. In most cases we do not need to resort to pulling out our books and literature to back up our findings however we understand that there are skeptics who may not see what we see. After all we do this every day. We also have another policy in place should the customer demand more proof. At no additional charge we will pull the heat exchanger out so you can physically see the cracks with your own eyes rather than trust what you see through a camera lens. From what I can tell the customer took the report from our technician, made no verbal complaints to him, did not call the office and talk to a manager to express his disbelief of our diagnosis or request any further proof. Instead he choose to call another company out to disprove our findings. Had we been invited back to pull the heat exchanger and if in fact we could not locate any cracks we would have re-installed the part and not charged the customer a dime. We are aware that the camera may not be 100% accurate but we have found it to be the best method for finding cracks. CO detectors and watching the flame characteristics in the burner area have been proven to be inaccurate in properly diagnosing a furnace. We were not given a chance to prove or disprove our findings because the customer did not alert us of his concerns so there is no resolution to his complaint.

Poor customer service. Poor communication. I will never use Atemp or buy a product from them.
Description of Work: Atemp was called to perform summer tuneup. Technician reported while cleaning the furnace that there was a crack in the the heat exchanger. He said the furnace was unsafe and shut off the gas. I called Atemp's service manager and explained that they installed the furnace within the last 5 years and thought the repair costs should be covered by Atemp. I was told they no longer carry the furnace and the labor costs to replace the exchange was $1600.00 He was extremely rude and insisted that the furnace had a catastrophic failure. I then had two other companies inspect the furnace and both found it to be safe and in working order. I then called the Oregon Attorney General's office who indicated Atemp had several similar complaints.

Response from A-Temp Heating & Cooling Inc
What the customer failed to mention in his complaint is actually documented in our response to his BBB complaint. First of all A-Temp installed the furnace on April 1st 2002. It had not been installed within "the last 5 years". It's in fact a 9 year old piece of equipment that has a heat exchanger warranty of 25 years which is held by the manufacturer, not A-Temp. On November 9th of 2009 the member called us out to perform a tune up and safety inspection of his furnace. I have no idea where he gets the idea that we were out on August 31st 2010 because that is not what our records reflect. Part of our safety inspection involves us using a small inspection camera to put inside and around the outside of the heat exchanger to check for cracks. He discovered a breech in cell # 1 and cell #3 of the heat exchanger. As part of our policy he bnrought the member to the furnace and showed him the two cracks on his camera. He then followed the procedure of shutting the gas off to the furnace, red tagging the gas line and informed the customer of the potential dangers of running a furnace with a cracked heat exchanger. It is always our policy to recommend replacement of the unit or replacement of the heat exchanger, it is never our recommendation that they continue to run the furnace. He was quoted the cost of replacing the heat exchanger which is listed on our Service Report as a Level 6 repair at $1078. I have no idea where he gets the figure of $1600 and I have the original service report that clearly backs up what I just said. The standard warranty on a furnace covers the cost of the part. In order to change out a heat exchanger it is very labor intensive as you are essentially disassembling and reassembling the furnace. I spoke with the member about the costs, explained very clearly why we had to charge him the labor to do the work. I then scheduled an appointment on November 25th @ 4:00pm to send another technician out AT NO CHARGE to re-inspect the heat exchanger with a camera and then pull the heat exchanger out of the furnace to physically show him the cracks. I offered this as a solution to his frustration over this problem. I also informed him that after we pulled the heat exchanger out and showed him the cracks we would not be re-installing the cracked heat exchanger. This is where he became argumentative but I diffused the situation and the appointment was set. On November 23rd @ 3:31pm the member called into the office and cancelled his appointment to have us come out and pull the heat exchanger. He indicated that he had changed his mind on having us back to pull the heat exchanger and show him the cracks because another company came out behind us and said there was no crack. One last thing I would like to point out is that we did not charge him a single penny to come out and diagnose his furnace with a potentially deadly failure of his gas furnace. So it comes as a shock that he is claiming we are a dishonest company and it also confuses me as to why he is making a complaint now over something that happened nearly 2 years ago.

I love this company! Before installing the new furnace they serviced our 15 yr old furnace for several years and I was alway impressed with the service tech's professionism and the time he took to talk to me about what he had done and why and the services he company offered. I joined They were my first choice when it was time for a new furnace. From the estimator to the installers, I received exceptional service. The estimator told me in detail what the condition of my old furnace was, and what I could expect from the York furnace they were suggesting I have installed. I did my online research into the York and found it was one of the higher rated furnaces as stated by Ben. When installation day came, they were there when they said they would be and they worked like a finely turned team. We had our airducts cleaned and sanitized, then the old furnace was removed and the new installed. It was finished in one day as promised and my garage had no visible trace they had even been there. We love the furnace, the new hepa filter system and Ben was right, our gas bill went down considerably. A-Temp will be installing our central AC this spring!

I had received a post card advertising a special for the tune-up. I checked out the A-Temp on Angie's List and because they rated very high, I decided to schedule an appointment. Nikki set up a service call and Mike arrived this morning. He got to work right away, cleaning and servicing the Furnace and A/C systems. He explained what he had done and answered some questions I had. I felt Mike was very professional and knowledgeable. He wore booties when coming in from the outside, which I very much appreciated. I will use them again on an annual bases and I plan on scheduling an appointment for duct cleaning.

showed up 11/2 hour late with no call. I was told they would clean and do maintenace on the furnace for 99 dollars also I needed them to check to see why the fan would not shut off. He checked the fan and that day it was turning off. He said he had no word of doing a cleaning but just checking the fan. He said he would have to come back to do the cleaning and it would be over 200.00 dollars. The furnace needed a filter but they were out. maybe I misunderstood but what I really needed was a cleaning and checkup.

We called A-Temp to receive a quote, and they showed up at the scheduled time. They were the third company we had in our house for a quote, and by the time we made a decision we had five different quotes. A-Temp took the longest during the initial meeting, the quote took almost two hours, an hour longer than anyone else. Fifty percent of the initial meeting was me sitting through a slide presentation about how they didn't have any workers with "tattoos" and that everyone had background checks. The sales guy was extremely gimmicky selling me on the company rather than on his product. I didn't find this professional at all. We had a pretty complicated task we were trying to accomplish and the salesman had a hard time understanding it. I had to show him a quote from another company to help explain to him what we were looking for. Even after showing him another quote he had to call someone else to see if he could do what two other companies had already said could be done.(Eventually two more companies verified what we wanted could be done). After the two hours the sales guy left, and one week later I still don't have a quote from them. I'm not sure how the quality of the work would have been, but if it takes more than a week to get a quote I can't imagine how long it takes to get the work done. Also, there is nothing wrong with a tattoo.
Description of Work: We wanted a quote for replacing our existing furnace with two new furnaces and also replacing a water heater. After a week we never received a quote.

Mike called approx. 30 min. before arriving for my appointment to let me know he was on his way. He arrived on-time and immediately began working. He was friendly and professional and explained what he was going to do. During the course of the service, I discovered that his company also serviced gas fireplaces, so I called to make an appointment to have my fireplace serviced after he left. I was very pleased with the work that was done and I would use this company again. I would highly recommend A-Temp Heating and Cooling, Inc. others.

I bought a house with a furnace installed by them. The furnace broke and I called them to fix it. It was under warranty, but they charged me to "file warranty paperwork". This is BS, but I had them do it, because it was the middle of winter and it needed to be done quickly. They installed the part and fixed it, but I felt completed shafted by them.

Tech was friendly and helpful. Warned me of a couple items that could use replacement but wasn't pushy about selling me into more time/materials. I believe his warnings because the furnace is 19 years old and I'm sure not serviced well by the previous owner. When it is time for replacement I will certainly be obtaining a bid from A-Temp.

We needed a new gas furnace and heat pump. After a review of our property and house it was determined that a heat pump wouldn't fit existing cement pad. We wanted a cooling system and A-Temp came up with a solution. By installing an Air-conditioner in combination with our energy star furnace we got the heating/cooling system we wanted at a really competive price. Our previous heating + cooling company had delivered quality service for 10 years, nursing our old furnace thru an astonishing 23 years of service, but their costs for a new system averaged about $2000-3000 higher at best. A-Temp provided the price, service that was just right for our circumstances.
