THIS IS AN UPDATE. I have upgraded my original overall rating to A. Ted sent his crew back out to address some of my concerns and they did a great job. Thanks, Ted! *************************** Overall I have been very pleased. Ted was pleasant, quick to respond, worked with me about changes to the original plan and was flexible. I had a 28 x 14 foot partially in-ground pool on a sloping yard. Some of the pool's cement walls extended up as much as two feet above ground. My back yard was not the most accessible as it was fully fenced and laid out in such a way that getting large machinery to the pool area was challenging. Ted worked with me to find a plan to do this without having to tear down the front fence. Originally, Ted thought that he could jack-hammer holes in the bottom of the pool and fill it with the rubble (as is typical), and then fill in with soil over the top. It was very important to me that I have at least 2 feet of soil on top of any rubble so that I could run a deep rototiller over the area as it was going to become a vegetable garden. After looking for a bit he advised that he would have to remove at least some of the cement. He quoted what we believe was a fair price for doing this work, as well as removing all the decking material, small pump house, pipes, fencing, leveling the yard so that it sloped evenly away from the house, and relocating or replacing some drainage pipes. He was also going to make sure that the electric service that had been run to the pump house was properly buried and he'd leave it with a junction box attached to a post near the old pump house. He also offered to remove a large stump near the pool. Because the decking covered much of the pool footings, I specifically asked how he would handle additional charges if he got under there and found that there was more to do, or that he had to remove extra material. He said that his quote was firm and that it was his job to quote correctly so that if surprises occurred he would cover them. He originally quoted $8,000 and then we agreed to add $300 to this to add a load of good garden compost soil. Ted's bid was very generic and did not go into details. In retrospect, I wish that we had been more specific on the details. The bid did not include the stump removal, and described the job without speaking much to leveling the yard. I did call Ted, and he assured me those were included. His word was good and there were no issues surrounding these items. However, once the decking was removed, it turned out there was an additional cement retaining wall, and more cement footings that were going to prove problematic to cover. This turned out to be a small point of confusion in what we originally agreed to. It was absolutely resolved to my satisfaction ? but it likely would have been better if we'd had the contingency as part of the original bid. I think we both would have felt better about it. On the day work was scheduled to start, Ted came out to go over the plans with me. As it turned out, I had found out that the electricity that had been run to the pump house was actually just a wire laid under the pool decking. I decided not to have Ted run that to the bottom of the yard and just asked him if he would instead put the junction box at the house. I had removed some branches from large trees, and completely removed some small trees in preparation for the job and asked him if he could remove the debris along with the decking, etc. I did not expect him to do this as part of the job since it was additional work. He and I settled on a very fair price for not only removing the branches, but also for removing the stumps. I was very pleased by his cheerful willingness to do this extra work as a last minute request. In addition, he and his crew agreed to relocate a small tree and a bush while working on the yard ? again at what I considered to be a very fair price. Ted's crew was very pleasant and prompt. They removed the decking, piping and debris quickly and efficiently. They neatly rolled up some chain link fencing that I planned to keep and put it in the garage for me. They also saved aside pier blocks that I wanted to keep and moved the pool filter and pump into my garage. They were all very willing to be helpful and make sure I was happy with the work. While he was there that day, Ted also looked at the RV parking pad attached to the garage. It was where the large truck was going to either have to park, or come around and we were trying to ascertain whether or not it would support the large equipment. As we were looking at it, Ted noticed a number of significant cracks in the foundation, and in the garage foundation. I have been having problems with water leaking into the garage ? flowing in from this parking pad. Ted advised that I should remove this old pad as it was likely contributing to the demise of the garage foundation. He advised that he would remove it for an additional $500, slope the ground away from the garage foundation, patch the cracks in the garage foundation, and if I wanted it, would deliver a load of gravel to create a replacement parking area at the cost of the gravel ? no charge for delivery. Coming at the last moment, I was unsure about whether or not I wanted to do this, and wanted to talk to my spouse. We had to make a quick decision as the excavator would be arriving the next day. We actually ended up calling Ted early the next morning so that my spouse could be in on the conversation, and appreciated Ted's willingness to talk over the details and explain again, the positive effect that removing the pad could have on the garage foundation. In the end, we decided to do this additional work. I have been very glad that we did, as my garage has now been dry after some torrential downpours. There is one small section of footing that he missed which is sticking up and preventing me from planting lawn there. I intend to call Ted to ask him if he will return to remove that. I suspect he'll do that with no question. Overall, I have been very pleased with the work that Ted and his crew did. Our backyard (though bare currently) looks amazing and slopes evenly. The tree and bush that he moved appear to be thriving in their new locations. We are confident that the garden area is free of cement. While originally quoted at 8,300, the job ended up costing us just about 10,000. Most of that was for additional work which was negotiated at the time ? the removal of extra debris, removal of the parking pad, delivery of one additional load of garden compost, and the relocation of the bush and tree. I felt like all of his charges for this additional work were fair. The only place where I think that Ted expressed some concern that he was going above and beyond, was when he determined that he was going to need to remove the additional cement retaining wall, and also remove the very large cement footings of the pool in order to give me the 2 feet of soil for my garden area. That was not something that he planned on. I did not want him to incur additional cost when we both had originally thought he would only have to remove some of the cement, not all of it. He gave me a very fair price for removing the additional cement and I greatly appreciated his willingness to take all of it out for a price that I doubt covered his costs. He absolutely made sure that I was happy with his work. If there was one suggestion I would make, I would encourage folks to write up a detailed list of the items included in the scope of work. Ted was very helpful and often offered to do additional work free of charge. However, he and his crew did not always remember those details. One member of his crew said that he'd clean the gutter on the garage as part of the work removing the parking pad. That never happened. Ted nicked a tree with the excavator and said that he'd not only put some repair patch on that, but would also do the other trees where I had limbed them. In the end he offered suggestions of what to put on the trees, but didn't do the work. I had to remind him about running the extension of the drainage lines, and in the end his crew only did one of the two lines that I thought was included in the original bid. The pump house electric wire turned out to be dead, but it was not ever attached to a junction box, but rather left coiled on my deck. I'm not sure exactly where it is connected and I'll likely need to hire an electrician to come out and either disconnect it, or attach it to a junction box. Ted advised that his crew would cut a number of roots in the area by the parking pad and then rake it before they left to smooth it all out. When I arrived home from work they had gone, but that hadn't been done. I don't think Ted ever returned to make sure all was done. To his credit, I think that if I had called him he would have sent the crew back out to fix that up, but I didn't call, as I felt he had given me such a good price on some other items it felt petty to complain about that. I think Ted's heart and integrity were in the right place ? he really went above and beyond for me in some areas and was very flexible as I worked through some additional requests. His offer of the additional work was heartfelt, I think he just forgot or got sidetracked. I would recommend that you schedule time at the end of the job to have Ted come back and make sure all was done before his crew leaves. Due to my work schedule, I was not able to do that and I think it would have been helpful. I would absolutely recommend calling Ted ? he's pleasant to work with and will work with your budget. He will take the time to explain the details and will make sure you are happy with the plan.

Ted was great. He came out within a couple of days to talk about our project and give us a quote. We bought a 10,000 sq ft lot with an abandoned home that was completely full of items and various overgrown vegetation and other garbage around the lot. Ted tore it all down and took care of the demolition and dumping. He also decommissioned the septic tank on the property. Finally he did a great job of smoothing out the dirt and leveling it and grading it so the rain water would flow down into the street. We were amazed at the results. Ted is very professional, keeps you up to date on the project's progress, and was great to work with. Would hire him again and we highly recommend him.
Description of Work: Ted demolished a home and cleared a piece of land that we bought. Also decommission a septic tank.

Ted explained we could DIY our goals for less than it would cost to hire him (we have a pretty small project). Ted provided two recommendations for suppliers, we shook hands, and he departed. We'll certainly be calling when we have a larger project to tackle. Thanks greatly for you professionalism Ted! Update July 2014: Just to update on current status. We did end up going with Ted's recommendations to DIY our project. He was right, it did cost less, and it only took a day's time. As a plus, I've learned how to operate a dingo - which is an initially intimidating but easy to operate machine.
Description of Work: We called Ted for a quote. Less than a day later, he was onsite chatting over our goals in pouring rain.
Ted was very responsive to time and budget. He excavated a basement for a 20' X 24' addition, installed a new 4 X 5 dry well, replaced the sewer line and excavated the area for a new foundation for the front of the house. He responded quickly on my schedule and kept in touch when he was delayed. He also back filled and brought in recycled concrete as required and spread it over a parking area. I was very pleased with the results.
Description of Work: Installed new sewer line, installed new dry well, excavated area for building addition.
Ted Rudiger Excavation was referred to me by a friend who found him on the internet. All the reviews about his company and work performed was great. Everyone was very pleased with every aspect of their projects. Ted Rudiger built a shop for me. It could have not gone better. No complaints whatsoever. Everyone with his company was very easy to work with. I got everything I wanted and more. I would without hesitation use him again and refer him to friends and family without hesitation.
Description of Work: I am building a shop at my home and Ted came in and did the ground prep which consisted of leveling the ground, bringing in fill and gravel. I had him widen my driveway and put in drains.

Ted was very prompt in responding to us on Angie's list. He made an appointment with us and showed up in a timely manner. He was very straight forward with us about the options that would and would not work with expanding our current home. He could have just told us he would do the original work we requested, but instead he gave us a real expectation about what we would experience with the home remodel we requested. My husband and I were very impressed with his professionalism, and with his willingness to allow us to bounce our ideas off him.

I was planning on a DIY project. Rent the excavator, dig, backfill, etc. I was running out of time to do it myself and I found Ted on Angie's list with exceptional reviews of Ted Rudiger Excavation. Ted came out quickly (during the Christmas holiday season) and gave me a very competitive price. Finished the project in a professional, timely manner. I am thankful for the reviews leading me to Ted, and thankful for the quick, economical, and friendly help Ted provided. Thank you Angieslist, and thank you Ted. I would have no hesitation recommending Ted to anyone! Ron.

The team of Ted, Angle, Bruce and JJ worked hard and smart for two full days. Each step was explained to us and we were consulted at each phase of the project. They used a very professional approach to the entire job. Ted over delivered on each of his promises and finished ahead of schedule. Each member of the team was very polite and knew their jobs very well. The rock wall was done especially well. Bruce is an artist. Angle was especially willing to do what ever was needed to assure a great project result. I will definitely use Ted Ruteger Excavation again and can recommend them without reservation.

We had 3 projects to be done. Ted was efficient, timely and very easy to work with. All the projects took nearly a month. He went out of his way to help us line up other contractors for pouring concrete, doing stonework, decommissioning/removing an oil tank and inspection by DEQ. With all the details needed in these projects we were glad we had Ted's knowhow to get the job done. The end result is everything looks great!

This was definitely an emergency situation as we had raw sewage in our back yard. Once we decided on hiring Ted's company they got right to work. The work was quick, professional, and top quality. As for the cost, they came in under two other bids and they still did a tremendous job. Once they started digging they managed to have the sewer working on a temporary basis that night, which was a huge relief to my wife and I and our kids. The next day they showed up early and finished their work quickly and efficiently.
Description of Work: Ted's company excavated a broken sewer pipe on the outside corner of our home. They replaced the original and now rotten and decayed concrete sewer pipe from the back corner of our house to the street. They did so without destroying the yard (brick pathway, pear tree, fence, other landscaping elements).

We live on two acres. We needed some work done at our place. I talked with 7 companies and decided to go with Ted Rudiger Excavation. Ted is a salt of the earth type of guy. He works with you and for you. I was so happy we choose his company. He went over board to make us happy and did more for us than what was on the contract. Our property is on a slight downhill slope from the front to back yard. Our shop sits in the front on the higher part of the slop. The shop was built on a cement slab dug level into the slope and was backfilled with cinder blocks then dirt. So all the rain water drains into the cinderblocks and across the slab inside the shop. We dug a french drain and added a sump pump to remove the water. Unfortunately we didn't dig deep enough. Not enough water was diverted. Ted came out to give us a quote. We were hoping for a bandaid fix and Ted explained how to solve the problem. He didn't have the lowest price; however, he did give us the best solution. Ted came in with his trac-hoe and dug up around the back and side of the shop below the slab, about 3 feet deep. Behind the shop was a large amount of unusable space, he contoured the ground so the rain water will run away from the shop and into a french drain that runs out to the back yard. Build a retaining wall from the side to the back of the property and tied that in with the fence and raised garden. Then graded and graveled area around the shop has opened up a large area for our use that we didn't have before. This has added an equity value, that I estimated, at double the cost of construction. We are extremely pleased with the results. We would highly recommend Ted and his team for any projects of this kind.

I was very leery of getting my sewer line from the basement to the curb replaced even though it was an absolute necessity.. My neighbor had a similar replacement and the contractor charged $8,000.00 and left a mess for days and a yard that needed work. I got 3 bids. Ted Rudiger Excavation was the mid-bid, my favorite choice of bids. He promised that the work would begin in a week. He dug up the yard and burst HDPE pipe through the existing sewer line, under the landscaping, to the curb. He made the proper connections and had city inspections. I live in a 1929 house so the existing pipe was tile. Some tree roots had grown around the existing sewer pipe tearing it up. One of my biggest concerns was that I would lose my 35 year old Japanese Maple tree which was right in the path of the dig. The tree was removed and bagged in burlap by a professional landscaper. It was determined that the Japanese Maple not the huge street trees caused the damage. The tree has been moved from its original site and carefully placed out of the line of the new sewer pipe. For all the excavating, the yard looks pretty good. Finishing touches will take place when it is drier out there. I am pleased with the work done and the way the property was left upon completion.
Description of Work: Ted Rudiger Excavation dug up my yard and burst HDPE pipe through the existing sewer line, under the landscaping, to the curb. They got the proper permits and made the correct connections. The work was inspected by the city. Before the work was done I had sewer water and debris backing up in my basement especially during heavy rains. Rudiger Excavation has completely corrected my sewer problems and given me back my basement laundry and storage area.

Excellent. Done in two days with only about two hours without service. Operators were excellent and organized they did not waste any time staring into the hole they got in there and made it happen. They were also very nice and entertained the baby! They did a very good job of cutting out the slab and kept our slate masonry in great shape. we could not be happier with the work. Ted came by before and after and double checked that everything was done correctly. I have already recommended them to a neighbor who is also having issues. I guess sewer lines last about 100 years max. I have a farm and do my own contract equipment work and ran the numbers on the bid. Excluding the sidewalk they ran about $200 and hour which is excellent for disposal, gravel, parts, labor, insurance, bond, diesel, skilled operator, and even some profit. A plus rating.
Description of Work: Sewer backup due to roots under the sidewalk. Ted had to cut the concrete, excavate 6 or 7 feet, replace the pipe, back fill, compact, and pour a new slab of concrete.

To be honest, I only got one bid, and that was from Ted. Generally I get at least 2 or 3, but Ted's bid seemed so reasonable, he seemed so honest, and he was so helpful and informative from the get-go that it was a no-brainer. He was immediately someone I trusted, and wanted to support. From the time I first called him on a Saturday he was at my doorstep within 45 minutes. It wasn't urgent, but he made himself available. Throughout the process, Ted was very friendly and honest. He did an excellent job, and went out of his way to make sure we were happy. And we are incredibly happy. I'll hire Ted in a heartbeat the next time we are ready to do any more work that is under his umbrella. There's a reason why he got an Angie's List Award last year, and he certainly deserves to get it again. Thanks, Ted.

We wanted a new driveway and a fence. We were tired of the laurel down the side of our long driveway and our car doors hitting it all the time. We even lost a side mirror once because of the branches and a driver who was not used to backing out. It is also a huge job to maintain. Our neighbor agreed, even though she liked her laurel, that a pretty fence would be nice but she was not going to pay for any of it. SO, I thought we should get the land surveyed and we did that too. We hired a man named Pat Sheaffer to do our driveway. We had seen a driveway he did on Alameda that was beautiful so we called him. He said he wanted to call a worker he knew and had done many jobs with in the past to do the excavating, laurel removal and a deep dry well. We met that same day with Ted Rudiger who gave us a price for the laurel removal and the dry well. We thought it was reasonable and so we hired him. WE knew he would also be working for Pat to excavate the rest of the driveway and that would be part of Pat's bid. Ted showed up early just before 8am on the day he was to start. He had come the day before and parked his backhoe in front of our house. It is a very modern, enclosed cab backhoe and pretty small too. It looked state of the art. He began work as promised. We have a very nervous and concerned neighbor who owned the laurel and so we explained how important it was to be careful of all her plants and her cement path that the laurel was very near to. Ted did an excellent job of being careful as promised and took out the laurel with no plant injured and the little path was not hurt at all. He then started to excavate and hammer the cement near the garage. He dug a 9 foot hole between our house and our garage and put in a dry well. He did it just as explained and filled with with the cement structure with holes and surrounded with rock, etc. He covered it and pounded it down. There was a little crack in our patio cement but I would say that could not have been avoided when doing this kind of work. I'm sure it happened when he had to pound down the rock in the dry well which had to be done. He was making every effort to be very careful. He found dry rot on our house when he got next to it. He took off a barrier and brought it to our attention. Needless to say, we are pretty down about that but glad Ted showed us and brought it to our attention right away. His part of the contract/job was done and we were very happy with it.
Description of Work: Ted Rudiger was hired by us to put in a dry well and take out a laurel approximately 35 feet long and 4 feet wide. The laurel was on our neighbor's property but she agreed to have it taken out.

We were thrilled with the service we received from the very first call to set up the free estimate. Ted was very understanding of our budgetary concerns and our desire to get the juniper out before the raccoons, whom had made it there home, returned. He was very generous with his time and advice well before we signed with him to do the project. We felt very confident from start to finish that we were in good hands and that the job would be done right. I appreciated Ted, JJ and Robert´s flexibility when we decided to add to the scope of the project by bringing in dirt and making the area all the more ready for planting. With the extra dirt we felt that Ted´s suggestion to add one more course of mason stone to finish off the top of our wall was the right call to make. He wowed us with how quickly they fit this into their schedule and by how reasonable Ted was with what he charged for time and materials. Tremendous care was taken to take care of our property during the week of work and with the final clean-up. As far as communication goes, Ted´s HR person checked in mid-project to see if all was going well and to check if we had questions. Ted himself also took the time to call us the following week just to double check we were still satisfied with the work completed. We would not hesitate to recommend the services of Ted Rudiger Excavation to friends and neighbors. There is a reason Ted comes so highly rated on Angie´s List! We´ve received so many compliments from neighbors and friends! We are still amazed by how much more curb appeal our home has now.Thank you, Ted, for turning our unexpected home improvement project into such a positive experience for us!
Description of Work: Ted and his team removed a ton of old and hideous juniper in front of our home including it´s massive root system, hauled it away, smoothed the remaining dirt and evened out the slope, built a 3´ retaining wall out of mason stone with appropriate drainage, added a yard of 4 way soil to leave our incredibly improved front ready for planting later this fall.

He arrived on Tuesday the 26th and had a Track Hoe on a trailer behind his truck. He arrived at 1:15 p.m. and after talking with us went to work and by 3:00 p.m. most of the clearing was done and he talked with us about smoothing the lot out a little as there was a drop off in the center and he said it would be easier for us to move about on the property if he contoured it more. We reiterated that we needed the berry roots removed and he said it would be no problem as he had a blade on one end of the machine and a bucket on the other. He told us the blade would get the berry roots as they were only 5 to 8" down. He also agreed to push a dead tree over so we could cut it up. He was very pleasant and kept suggesting more things he could do, and we kept bringing the topic back to the roots, which we knew would come back next year with a vengence, if he did not get those out. When he left at 3:30 p.m. he said he would be back the next day with two helpers. The next day he did not show up so I called him. He said he got busy elsewhere and would be back on the following day,Wednesday the 28th, He once again arrived at 1:15p.m. and had the two helpers with him. They were to dig the berry roots with shovels while he started to load up his dump truck with the blackberry bushes he had pushed into piles two days prior. Since he arrived so late it was hot and the guys had obviously been working earlier in the day as they appeared hot and tired. He told me to get them something to drink, juice, pop whatever as it was hot and they were working mostly in the sun. I ran to the house and found some frozen fruit juice and mixed it up for them and also a gallon pitcher of water with ice. They tried to dig out the roots, when they weren't helping him load up and it seemed futile as they had big shovels and no rakes or containers to put the roots in just dug at them and went from place to place. He took about 4 loads to the dump and the last load he complained to me that they were charging too much to dump the loads. I asked him where he was taking them, and he motioned off somewhere and of course he was hot and tired. They left at 3:30 p.m. He said they would be back the next day and they were. He at 8:55 a.m. and they, caught in traffic, at 9:15 in the morning. Another warm day and he started complaining right off, even though I just went into the house after taking out another 1/2 gallon of grapejuice and a pitcher of ice water. He had to push some small trees over, which I did not want to lose, but he said he could not get to the berry bushes, a few, without pushing over the trees. These were tall saplings with no lower limbs and about 3 inches in diameter. Then he told the guys to cut them up into four foot sections, with a chain saw and put them in our driveway, along with the dead tree he had pushed over. It took them all of 45 minutes with a chain saw to do this. He was really out of sorts, as now the only thing left to do was scrape and haul the roots that he hadn't touched until that point, except for the few that the guys dug up and they didn't go anywhere, just left them on top the ground. He had, had the marking done for underground utilities so he knew where to scrape and how deep he could go. He started to scrape the dirt and it came up nicely and rolled up as he pushed it, then he just stopped and looked at me and said, I am not going to haul all of this dirt and the roots away - it would be too much to dump. I was completely baffled, that is what we had agreed on, and at that point I noticed my husband leave and head into the house. I followed him and he said he was having chest pains. My husband has had two major heart attacks and two bypass surgeries and stress is not something he handles well. I already had the check written for Ted Rudiger, so I grabbed it and headed out to the lot. He said I suppose you are not going to pay me, and I told him I had the check in my pocket. It was only 1:30p.m. at that point so I figured he and the guys would go get some lunch and come back. He said something about the check again and I told him I wasn't going to argue with him. But he had agree to scrape the lot, and at this point had only taken about 5 loads to the dump, of the brush, and no dirt. He had worked a total of 10 hours at that point and I could not fathom that he would not be back and finish the job. I then gave him the check and went back in the house to see how my husband was doing. I told him not to worry, I was sure Ted Rudiger, who said he would not leave until we were happy with the work, would do more than just haul off the brush and leave all of the roots to sprout back up again as soon as it rained. Of course, I was wrong. A few minutes after I went in the house his dump truck left with the guys and he had loaded up his track hoe and left right behind them. He never came back or called so I called the neighborhood specialist at Angies List and gave him my report and grade. He asked me if I had called the contractor to see if he intended to finish the job. I told him no, I had not, so he said just make the one call and even if he hangs up on you, that is all you need to do.Two days later I called Mr. Rudiger and he said he had been trying to reach me, but could not find my phone number. He seemed upset with the grades I had given him. I asked him why, since he only did half of the job, and left me with a mess of roots, that were going to become blackberries and weeds after the next rain. He said he would come out and go over the lot with me and made an appointment for August 10th to come up and of course he was supposed to be here at 8:30 a.m. and showed up at 7:50 a.m. I went out and we went onto the lot and sure enough the blackberries were popping up all over even though we had had no rain. I told him, he hadn't even bothered to contour the lot, like he said he would. He looked around and saw what a mess it had become in less than ten days. He turned to me and said he would give me $2000.00 back, or else he would have to come back and scrape the lot. I was tempted, but since my husband had not come out, I told Mr. Rudiger that I would talk to him about the choices, and I would call him back. After discussing the whole thing with my husband, I gave Mr. Rudiger a call and told him I would accept the $2000.00 and try to find someone to come out with a piece of equipment to finish the job. He said he had talked with his attorney and that he would rather give the attorney the $2000.00. He said the attorney had come up looked at the lot and suggested that he come back as there were berries he had missed. He told me he was busy but would come back in two weeks to see about scraping the roots and finish it up. That was on the 15th of August. We waited two weeks and two days and still he did not mark the lot, so I figured he just was not coming back. I called him again on September 5th and he said he was busy but would be back on the 6th of September. When he did not show, once again, I called and he said he would be up the next day Sept. 7th. When he did show up he had no equipment and both my husband and I were there. Once again the berries were much bigger and more widespread on the lot and we asked him what he was going to do about it. My husband told him he had offered us $2000.00 so why did he just not give that to us and let us get someone to finish it up. He said "No, I will come back and finish up next week", he said again that he had a piece of equipment that would be just right for the job. That was to be on Sept. 12th. When he did not show up once again, and I noticed that the lot had not been marked for underground utilities I called him. I told him this and he said he had called and it should be marked by Wednesday the 14th when he would be back to finish the job. He did not show up and never called. I waited until September 19th and contacted Angie's list and told them what had transpired. I never heard from him again. At this point, having had a bid of 1650.00 from a Landscaper to do the job that Ted Rudiger did, I believe he should return the balance of the $4000.00 over the 1650.00 that the landscaper bid to cut and haul all of the bushes and weeds above the ground and haul it all off. That is all Ted Rudiger did, and since this has gone on this long, we are now going to have to have this all done over next Spring or Summer depending on the weather. I walked the lot today, and the berries are completely covering it along with weeds and a huge Sunflower, at least 8' tall is growing in the middle of the berries. It will easily be a much bigger mess next year, than it was this year. UPDATED SEPTEMBER 18, 2012: We are still waiting, and the lot he cleared is a mess - since he did not complete the job by scraping the roots out and removing them from the lot.
Description of Work: On about the first week of July I started getting bids for clearing an overgrown lot that is next to our home and property. It was full of weeds and blackberry canes and in some places the brush was twenty feet high. I had Angie's List send me the names of contractors, who it turned out were landscapers and none of the people I contacted had large equipment, only hedge trimmers and string trimmers. After getting about three estimates, and talking with the contractors, I realized that I would need to find another category of contractor, so I asked Angies List for excavators. I wanted the lot cleared and then scraped so that the weeds and especially the berries would not come back. Several people mentioned clearing and then spraying, but we did not want to go this route. That would mean hiring someone frequently to do the spraying and since the lot is so exposed and we are just over the hill from a bird sanctuary, and there are a lot of children in the area, along with their pets, it just was not an option. So we got the list of excavators and I started calling them. Ted Rudiger was the first to come out and he talked with us and looked the lot all over and told us he could do the job, no problem. We told him we would think about it and get back to him as he said his price would be 4,000.00. He went on at great length about his grandfather, who had started the business, and how he aimed to please - "I won't leave until you're happy with the job I do, my word is my bond, just as it was for my grandfather!" That was something we would hear more than once, from him. That evening as my husband and I were talking about getting another couple of bids, Ted Rudiger called us and asked us if he could do the job as he had some time open the following week. My husband and I had been thinking we should get moving on this project, as the weather had been dry for a month and the lot was tinder dry. So it was my idea to go ahead, take him at his word, and let him clear and scrape the lot, so we would be done with it for a few years, at least. We had done this about 10 years prior, when there was an excavator working in the area and it took care of the problem for years. We set a time when he could start, as he was finishing up some work elsewhere, and received a phone call about a week later. After a couple of delays, when I had to call and find out when he would be out to do the work, he finally promised to be here on July 25th, to start the work. When he did not show up I called him and he apologized and said he would be out the next day. UPDATED SEPTEMBER 18, 2012: This is a follow-up review for the above company.Ted Rudiger stated after not finishing up the work that he contracted to do, that he would be back to do so on September 14 , 2011.We are still waiting for him to complete the scraping of the lot, in addition to the brush cleaning he did. We agreed on $4000.00 for the whole job, and he did about half, left with his equipment, then said he would either return $2000.00 or finish up the scraping of the lot. He did neither!

Response from Ted Rudiger Excavation Inc
Customer asked me to clear the and I did, right down to the bare land, and customer even asked me dig up all the roots so I did with my workers, and then asked me to dig all the dirt away from the curb so I did, then she wanted all the dirt leveled out, so I did, then she wanted trees taken, and then chainsawed them up for firewood for her, the place was a mess. Then customer wanted me to blade the driveway all way up to their house, so I did. I thought to myself, that this was above and beyond what the bid was and what the project scope was, I was just to clear the stickers, that's it, she even wanted to pull little tiny weeds, then I told her to spray these weeds, but all I was doing was clearing the land. It was obviously customer would never be pleased. Husband was contacted about the delay in the start date of the job, and husband said that was fine, no problem, are stickers can come out at any time. I was concerned and called. I strive to get A's on all of my reports, and aim to please all my customers. No matter what I would have done I would not be able to make this customer happy. This customer is elderly, and this is important for me to help them all I can, and this one I can't. She wanted me to keep going on and on, it finally had to stop.

Ted and his crew were here at the agreed upon time. They verified the location of the natural gas line then started digging up the tank. They hauled the tank to a recycle center, filled the hole with a quality soil purchased from S&H Logging, leveled the ground over the hole and cleaned up afterward. They did a superb and highly professional job. I would recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: Remove an underground propane tank, dispose of it and fill the subsequent hole.
Once we met Ted and agreed to what we needed, he began work the very next day. From start to end Ted and his crew were diligent and stayed on task. They came early and worked the full day. He kept me apprised of everything he was doing and/or planning on doing. He was responsive to our problem and dealt with it quickly, efficiently and professionally. Truly impressive and this was during one of the coldest spells we had this winter. The temperature was in the teens. He knew we were experiencing flooding in our basement and he made every effort to address this concern as quickly as he could. Ted was our hero. I would recommend Ted and his crew without ANY reservation. He stood by his quote, even though he had a cost overrun with the landscaping. After the current rain that has fallen this past week, we have remained dry alleviating any worries of future flooding. Ted was a lifesaver. Thank you TED! The drain works superbly and my yard is gorgeous.
Description of Work: The following services were performed by Ted and his crew: Installed a french drain that ran around the entire house, which involved connecting to an existing french drain that had been installed poorly when the house was built and ran the drain to the street (covering approx 150 ft). Our driveway was dug up and a new drive way was poured and a channel system was installed to collect the water. In the process of pouring the driveway, he added an extra step to the front steps as well as rock garden to collect and direct water to the drain. He sloped and graded the yard for drainage; tore out all the front and back yard grass, removed plants, as requested, and laid topsoil, bark-dust and sod in the front and back yard. He added raised flower beds and redesigned the backyard landscaping. He even bought some plants for the rock garden to give me some design ideas.

We were satisfied. They seemed to definitely know what they were doing. They were competent in their field and they were polite. They were not low cost.
Description of Work: We used Ted Rudiger Excavation to dig out a 1,000 pound oil tank and replace a sewer line from the house to the street which was a considerable distance.
