Was the only company we actually received a bid from and they did so fairly promptly at a busy time of year for this work. Left me with a professional handbook that detailed the steps. Delivered quote via e-mail and followed up promptly. Were able to schedule and get the work done in two days (took a couple of months after initial contact). We are very pleased with the quality of work.

We are very pleased with Trent's design of the project which addressed what we thought were some difficult issues: The height of the patio cover and the method and placement for the attachment to the house. What they designed flows smoothly and effortlessly with the pitch of the roof (it doesn't look like an add-on) and gives us more headroom underneath than what we previously had. The design also eliminated the support posts in the middle of the patio, making it look much, much larger and much more usable. Their quote came in approximately $10,000 under the quotes from the other companies I contacted. Part of the savings was due to us doing the finish work of sanding and staining and adding some finishing touches, which we like doing anyway. The crew was very friendly and personable and cleaned and swept the site after each workday. They also helped me move some heavy bonsai to another location in the yard for me. They deserve an all around A+. There were some minor issues concerning the roofing job (sub-contracted, notTnT) which Trish promptly took care of when I noticed them (roofing nails protruding from the roofing deck). Of course the final test was the recent rain. No more puddles and lakes on the patio!

Originally we had planned to do the entire process of building a deck ourselves to replace one that had outlasted its service life. We spent considerable time talking with lumber yards, reading online reviews of materials, and even designing a deck to city code. Then we realized the effort needed to complete the project was far beyond what we wanted to do. We contacted TnT Builders upon recommendation of a lumber yard, as well as contacted two good carpenters with deck building experience. TnT Builders provided the most competitive bid, with the most experience deck building, and the quickest build schedule. We were pleasantly surprised on how much they contributed to the project even though we had already spent so much time on the material selection and design--they improved upon our design, recommended a better selection of materials, and worked with us throughout the entire process. They handled the process from demolition and disposal of the old deck through permitting and construction to final approval. The city even required a soils test for the permit, and the provider took care of it all. The actual time to demolish and build the deck was about five working days, truly impressive. We were impressed and welcomed their willingness to work with us, taking our daily input with respect and a smile, throughout the entire process. We can't say enough about the quality of their work, which was true for the entire crew. They are truly professionals from the owners, the office staff, and their carpenters. We were very pleased with the entire process and highly recommend them for any deck or patio project! For some background on the project, we replaced a 34-year old non-treated wood deck with a contemporary deck consisting of concrete piers, treated wood structure, composite decking, rails, and post sleeves, and aluminum pickets. Plus we had dimmable LED lighting installed under each post cap. The deck is about 6-7 feet above ground, warps around a portion of the house and is about 340 sq.ft. The design, at our request, was better than code, we used larger structural members and closer structural spacing. We expect to get many enjoyable, low-maintenance years out of our deck. The deck is truly beautiful and compliments our house perfectly. Thanks TnT Builders, you did a fantastic job of building our deck.

The bid process was very professional. Options were presented and shown to assist in picking my desired design. The owners were great in taking my general design wishes, and developing them into a plan that was much more than I had conceived of on my own. The price was clearly outlined, and honored. It took some time to start the project, as the pergola parts had to come from the east coast. The workmen were skilled, very professional, good-natured and very polite. I felt completely comfortable having them at my home. In retrospect, I realize that it would have been wise for me to get a detailed drawing of the project before we started...the workmen had only a general hand-drawn sketch from which to work, and I didn't know how some aspects were going to look before they were constructed. Most of the project was completely wonderful! More than I could have ever imagined! It completely upgraded my backyard and the back of my home. I was not happy with a few of the original parts of the deck. (Benches and bridge) The owners were extremely obliging in hearing my thoughts on the items that weren't to my liking. They helped me to develop alternate designs, which they implemented willingly and capably. They charged me only for the parts of the redesign, as those items had not been included in the original quotation. The end product is something of which I am extremely pleased and extremely grateful for. I would highly recommend TNT Builders to someone wanting an expert team of deck contractors.

The morning that construction began, I met with Trent and repeated my previous concerns. He seemed mildly annoyed at having to listen to my few minutes of input. After I left, I guess he ignored it completely. I had several concerns that I had mentioned during the bid process and in emails. I also told Trent prior to construction. 1) Don't overdrive the screws into the deck boards since it only encourages water penetration and weakens the grip. Well a large number of them were driven to deep (1/4"+). His response was that the wood would shrink and the depth would then be correct. He said if he had made the screws flush with the deck boards, then after shrinking, the screws would be above the boards. This sounds like total BS considering the work was done in September using S4S kiln dried western cedar. Not a lot of shrinkage to factor in. 2) Please pre-drill the screws at the ends of boards to keep them from splitting. This was not done and there are several ends that have already split. 3) Use post-to-beam brackets to anchor the beam to the posts. This was specified and agreed to verbally and an email. When questioned, Trent said that usually they toenail the contact. Well, that's not what I asked for and you agreed to. In order to fasten the ledger to the house, a few pieces of horizontal cedar lap siding needed to be removed. Then they had to pry an additional run of siding to insert the flashing. Well they busted every piece they pried and after inserting the flashing, they nailed the busted pieces back in place. They could have cut good sections out of the pieces they had already removed, but instead of using them they just nailed the busted pieces back. When I questioned Trent, he said he would replace the busted ones but that there was no guarantee that they would not bust even more of the existing siding as they attempted to insert the new pieces. This was stated in a way that was obvious he was not interested in repairing his damage. It was probably his crew that did the work, since my wife explained that Trent left the job site for part of the day. The following weekend, I replaced the siding myself--and then I learned what a poor job they did when they inserted the flashing. Some of the flashing was a few inches tall and other pieces were barely and inch--just enough to be hidden by the siding. Since they used existing concrete piers, they only had to pour one pier. They poured it then built the deck around it using temporary braces. They had originally estimated two days of work in their bid. Three people were at the site in the morning when construction began, and the Trent left. They managed to complete the job in one day. I probably should have gone with the low bidder, since he said his crew of 4 would finish in one day--but he seemed less professional (at the time). Since the crew was done, Trent asked me to remove the form boards for the one pier. I agreed. It retrospect, I should have made them return and finish their own job since they essentially doubled their income by completing the job in half the time estimated in their bid. When I tried removing the forms for the pier, I had to struggle since they dumped all the extra concrete around the perimeter of the form boards. Considering the deck was cantilevered 2' past the pier, it was a real pain busting the several inches of wasted concrete off the exterior of the form boards in order to remove them. And they left the dirt from the hole in a pile under the deck. Sloppy. Finally, some of the joists were not aligned well with the ledger. There were 1/4" variations which caused the deck boards that were close to the house to be uneven.
Description of Work: We had discussed in person, on the phone and even in emails what the deck requirements were and what I expected the finished product to look like. It was a simple 10' x 22' deck, less than 3' off the ground. It would be using existing piers. The finished product was decent--but with minor effort it could have been much better.

Their work was sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. 1) Inconsistent / incorrect gaps between boards are my primary complaint. The gaps between Trex boards varies all over the place. You would have thought I hired 2 high school kids with no experience. At the corner of my house the Trex boards along one wall were cut too short and there is a gap of over 3/4 inch with the Trex board along the other wall. 2) Another example--The workers assumed a gap of 1/4 inch would place the final Trex board where it needed to be over the rim joist. Well, when you are off by even a little it adds up. 27 gaps later they were off by almost 2 inches from where that outer board needed to be. It doesn't even cover the pressure treated rim joist! They didn't realize their mistake until the last board. If only Trex made a 2x8, I could use that instead of the 2x6 Trex I have and pretend it was intentional. But they don't. 3) While removing the old Trex deck they dealt with stubborn screws with a pry bar. That did considerable damage to my joists. There are places where whole chunks came up. 4) I have picked up over 100 old screws in my driveway and in front of my garage. 5) They took the Trex off my main staircase and left for the day with nothing covering the top 2 steps. I have 2 dogs that run down those steps 10 times a day. I had company staying at my house. It was really unsafe. I found some scrap wood and covered the holes before someone got hurt. In the past 2 years I have used framers, electricians, plumbers, tile installers, carpet installers, and painters. Those experiences went smoothly. TNT Builders gave me the worst quality by far. I believe they have multiple crews. The owner was supposed to by on site during the installation but was on vacation. I assume I got a crew who either didn't know what they were doing or just were preoccupied with something else. Their heads were not into their work. After too many issues, I asked them not to come back. I went over all the gap problems with Trent, the owner, when he got back from vacation. We couldn't come up with a solution that didn't seem like a bandaid to me. I certainly didn't want to be at work wondering what sloppy work was going on in my absence. In my opinion, you are taking your chances with TNT Builders.

customer- I've been trying to formulate a response for quite some time now and hope that this suffices: As a small family business, Trent and I are VERY concerned about customer service and satisfaction - those values are an integral part of our business, our employee training, as well as the way we live our lives personally. So with that in mind, your review cuts very deeply... There's no way Trent or I would ever walk away from a job with a customer so dissatisfied that they would feel the need to warn people away from doing business with us. And if fact we never have - in 17 years of business and 100s of customers, we've always been able to resolve issues and differences. As you know, we were not finished with your deck project when you took the pictures you've included with your review. I'm completely confident that had we been allowed to finish the project your concerns would have been addressed. I'm sorry that you were unable to visualize the completed project and I appreciate that this deck is very, very personal to you since you & your late husband were working on it together. I think the situation was complicated by the fact that our approach was slightly different than yours. As you stated in an email to me regarding the stairset Trent built for you, "He is a good problem solver and came up with the perfect design for my terrain." So again, I truly believe if he had been allowed to finish the job you would have been very satisfied with the results. I regret that you were frustrated by some of the actions by our employees and that you felt like Trent and I were out of reach during our vacation. We are a very small company and have struggled with how to carve out family time. Last year we decided a family vacation during our busy season would be OK. And while I don't regret the vacation, I certainly will approach them differently so that customers like you get the attention they deserve. We would be very happy to return and complete your deck project if you would be amenable to it but if not, we wish you the best and thank you for reading our response. Trish, TnT
