My experience with J Thomson Custom Jewelry was fantastic! My wife inherited a ring from her mother and wanted to make a new ring using the stones of her mom's ring, and her own wedding band. I searched Angie's List and found J Thomson. The reviews were all good to great, so off we went on a Saturday to see what they could do. Initial visit - Greeted by friendly people and serviced immediately. The salesman was very knowledgeable and did nothing to steer us in any direction. We ended with up great concept and size, and then met Jeff (the J in J Thomson) who then helped do a rough drawing and guided us into the final idea. Follow-Up - Jeff got back with a CAD drawing of the ring that was fantastic. We gave him the go ahead to create the ring. Since we were going to travel in the near future, he agreed to get it done within week. Delivery Day (as promised) - Jeff called me, instead of emailing, encouraging me to surprise my wife with the ring. Since I was free at lunchtime, i went to the store where, Jeff sheepishly said there was a little problem. They had cast the ring in white gold when we had specifically requested yellow (using the metal from the other rings). He said it was his fault, and knowing we were about to travel, offered to yellow gold plate the ring for the trip. He also said that he believed the ring was prettier in white because the diamonds were of such good clarity. I opted to take the ring home as was, but he assured me that not only would he yellow gold plate the ring in time for the trip, if my wife wanted, but that he would recast it in yellow gold after we returned. It was up to us. Final Result - I paid the agreed price, and Jeff said that we were to kept the nugget of yellow gold recovered from the other two rings. My wife ended up loving the white gold. The ring is beautiful, very well crafted and simply a work of art. So, not only did we get a beautiful ring at a fair price, but we ended up with the recovered gold in nugget (no charge for the gold used in the ring). We definitely will use Jeff again, and in the very near future.

I am in town on business and don't know my way around the city. I walked into the store. They are doing some remodeling, but stopped immediately to help me. I explained what had happened to my ring. My wife is tired of my not wearing my wedding ring. I gave the salesman my ring and after he made it a "ring" again he told me he wanted to polish it before he returned it. I had a ring I was wearing on that hand because I couldn't wear my wedding ring. He saw me taking it off and asked to polish it as well. When he returned them both they looked stunning. He took 26 years off the wedding ring. That was great service and at no charge! I highly recommend one consider shopping here when looking for jewelry. They even have some custom jewelry and they can do custom work.

I honestly can't say enough great words for how much I appreciate the care that was given to the ring and the commitment that Jeff and his team had to find matching stones to replace the one missing stone, two chipped stones and one discolored stone. I was really impressed with how professional Jeff and his team were and their commitment to provide high quality service without breaking my budget. The exact age of the ring is unknown but it had been my great-grandmother's and our family believes that she already owned it when she emigrated from Russia-Poland in 1886. The ring is a very delicate 14K rose gold cluster ring with a natural opal in the center surrounded by eight small green stones that my mother had always thought were emeralds. I always thought they had a different hue than an emerald but never saw other jewelry anywhere with green stones that looked quite the same. First step in their process was identifying what the green stones were. Ironically, (although I never mentioned the ring coming from Russia) they identified the original stones as demantoid garnets which, although not emeralds, are at times called by the misnomer "Uralian Emeralds" and at the time this ring was made were only found in the Ural mountains of Russia. To keep my cost down (as demantoids are still rather rare) while at the same time providing an excellent color match they replaced the missing/chipped/discolored stones with tsavorite garnets which are more readily available. This was not an easy job. All stones were removed from the ring. In the end, Jeff decided that the repair/re-tipping of the prongs really had to be done using a laser in order to best protect the ring and ensure a high-quality result. Thomson's does not have laser equipment on site but instead have someone that they contact for this detailed type of repair. After assuring me and removing all the stones from the ring, they brought both the old and new stones along with the ring to the laser jewelry repair location for replacement of the stones and gold-tipping of the prongs to prevent future loss of stones. Back at Thomson's they put finishing touches on the repair and cleaned the ring such that the gold and the stones shine beautifully. And for the first time in my life, I now can finally wear this ring - something I've only imagined doing for about 50 years! Also, although the amount of work and effort was much more than originally planned, they would not charge me any more than the original quote they gave me. Jeff was determined to stand by his word/quote -- now THAT kind of professionalism and service is priceless!!

Service was excellent. Jewelry was cleaned at no additional charge. Very pleased.

It went very well. I even shopped the store for a bit, they have some very nice pieces in the store. They also cleaned my diamond rings with the appraisal service.

The process went extremely well. The rings turned out fantastic and mated perfectly to my wife's 3 stone anniversary style engagement ring. An appraisal of the overall finished product was also included at no extra charge. We were able to get these rings in platinum for the same price as other local custom jewelers were quoting for white gold.

My original review from 9/2011: We had driven past the store hundreds of times on Northwest Expressway, but never stopped in. I'd been searching for a new jeweler that I could work with since my last beloved jeweler had retired and closed shop a couple of years ago. I'm always needing something repaired, a watch battery replaced, a size adjusted, or something totally new specially designed from an idea in my head. We had a new men's Citizen watch that was purchased from an online vendor and needed to have a jeweler remove a link or two from the watch's bracelet for a better fit. We stopped in on a whim to see if they would do it there. They were very friendly and knowledgable and happy to do the service for a nominal $5.00 charge. While the watch was being adjusted, we looked at the jewelry in the display cases, of course. This is a place that carries a lot of estate, consignment, and custom pieces - not the typical mass-produced items you see in a mall jewelry store. We saw the diamond necklace described above (which was part of an estate collection) and were blown away by it. The price was unbelievable and too fantastic to resist, so we bought it right then. The following week I brought in the bracelet and necklace that I wanted re-designed. They consulted with me on the new design and took just a few days to complete the work. I stopped by and tried it on, but adding the little sunflower charms into it had made the bracelet length too long for my wrist. We figured out how many lengths of gold bars needed to be removed to make it fit perfectly and I left it for another couple of days. They called when it was ready and the finished work is perfect and beautiful. I'm thrilled to have found a wonderful jeweler who I can work with on many future projects! They are all very helpful and friendly. They provide appraisals for insurance replacement coverage, and they also offer jewelry insurance that is very reasonably priced - better than a special jewelry rider on my homeowners' policy. ------------------ Update 11/2013: Every single transaction and interaction that we have had with JThomson over the past two years has been fantastic. He is so knowledgeable, he is always our go-to expert on all things jewelry, coins, scrap gold. He is honest and very fair in his prices. We always feel that we have gotten a lot more value than what we were charged. I can't recommend JThomson enough! Best jeweler I've ever worked with, hands down.

Good. Family owned business, I get very good personal service. They do an excellent job on jewelry repair and in the past have used them to make custom jewelry that my wife was extremely pleased with. Only complaint is that they get behind and don't finish when they say they will. They will continue to be my jeweler for all my jewelry needs. Prices are very reasonable.
