Don from Water Heaters Plus arrived a good 20 minutes early (after calling to make sure it was okay.) The installation ended up taking a little longer than expected, due to some minor complications from basement waterproofing. Don was very professional and did a great job!

My husband and I and another couple recently purchased a duplex and the water heater on one side died after another contractor unplugged the unit and then failed to plug it back in. We were in dire straights and were referred to Water Heater's Plus through a former landlord. Anyway, they came out assessed the issue, presented with a number of options varying in cost. We chose to have a tankless system put in for the entire house. They were out the next morning, had the work done by 6PM that evening, they were professional, clean, timely, reasonable, and fantastic to work with. The owner was kind, responsive, and professional. We were very impressed.
Description of Work: Water Heater's Plus came out gave us a quote on several different water heater options, installed a tankless water heating system for our house (a duplex), and removed the old water heaters.

They did a great job. The previous water heater company came out and said that we could not install the new kind of hybrid hot water heater in our basement. Water Heaters Plus was able to do it perfectly fine. We would use them again in the future if we needed to.

It went well. They came on the 29th and tried resetting it because everything else checked out ok. They told me to call back if I didn't have hot water the next morning; I didn't. The next day they came and replaced both thermostats and all was well. The only reason I gave a B instead of an A for punctuality is because both days they called to come earlier than arranged and it threw off my work schedule. Better than being late though!

Called and scheduled appt. They were able to come out next morning which was great as things are getting a little busy this time of year. Technician called before coming out as promised and came out right on time. Tech worked quickly to diagnose problem and since replacement part was available, picked up part, returned and quickly replaced the defective gas valve. Price was reasonable. I really felt comfortable that this company knows what it is doing with expert techs. I am also thinking about installing a tankless system and I will probably use this company for this work.

After 6 weeks of emails and phone calls, I could not ONCE get them to return my call. This is Home Depot's contractor. I wanted a Rheem, so I purchased it from HD and was connected to this company for install. They quoted me $360 for all permits/parts/install/removal. HD has special orange phone at their store that you use to be connected to their contractors to arrange install. I was connected to Dave at WatHePlus. He was nice, but there was some confusion as to how the heater vented, so I had to take a photo and email it to him, which I did the next day. By the end of the next week I hadn't heard back, so I resent the email, with a clearer subject line. No response. I called and left a message with a woman who answered the phone, explained I had emailed it twice, confirmed email address, and asked for him to return my call. No response. I emailed again. Nothing. I called again. No response. Finally got name of president, Jason, called and left message for him. No response. This was over 6 weeks. Because they were the HD installer, it was easiest for me to use them, but since they can't be bothered to respond to email or phone calls before they have my money, what can I expect once they've got it??? I have since called someone else and they are only charging me $275, so in the end, it's going to save me money to use someone else. Plus they returned my phone call the same day! (Bozman Plumbing) In response to provider's response below it was a straight replacement and removal of an old water heater. I have documented names of who I spoke with and I have the quote written down. It says $75 permit/$250 install/$45 materials for total of $370 (I wrote $360 above but I see added wrong). And as I explained above but the owner apparently didn't understand, this was in addition to the cost of the water heater itself which was purchased at HD (the brand they have there is manufactured by Rheem). And like I said I made multiple phone calls and after talking to Dave that first time from the HD store orange phone that directly connected me with him, I never got any return calls or emails. I also have copies of the emails I sent. It seems the owner below is just grasping at straws to explain what I wanted although it was clearly explained above. Regardless of what I wanted tho, it does not excuse their complete lack of response and professionalism. Bozman plumbing did a great job for $275, were extremely helpful and promptly returned my calls. I just wished I had called them right away than ever trying to go through HD.

Response from Water Heaters Plus! Inc
I honestly do not know what this complaint is about. We do install water heaters for Home Depot. However we do not offer any water heater with installation for the $360 that the member stated. I am afraid that the customer was wanting a vent repaired or some other service. The Home Depot program is for replacements only. We do not service old water heaters through this program. With the Home Depot system if the job does not fit into an approved category them it doesn't fit in the the program's check and balance system. We are working along with Home Depot to improve their system. If this customer was just wanting to purchase a replacement water heater using the Home Depot system she could have spoken to anyone in our office and received a quote and had the water heater installed the same day. I am truly sorry that this customer had a bad experience. Jason Ruby

This turned out to be a good experience after some minor communication issues. Found pricing/basic info on their web page on Tues. eve; no phone number listed. Their prices were comparable to what I found at local hardware/appliance stores for similar products. I opted for a second anode rod, longer tank warranty for approx. $120 more. Called a number listed on Angie's on a Wednesday <8am to ask questions about potential installation issues with narrow space/no drain. I wanted installation before Sat. Dave answered and relieved my concerns about the installation location and date, and that a damaging tank rupture with my small leak and bad valve was unlikely; not pushy at all. He needed to confirm the tank size for my space and was to call me back. When I didn't hear back later that morning, I called a few times to no avail. Just as I was ready to try another company, Dave called back at the end of the day. Here I hadn't been calling the main office, but an installer's work phone. I had choice of installation windows on Friday. I did not get the 30-minute advance call; though not big issue since company close to my home. The installer showed up 10 minutes after I got home late for the start of the installation window. Installer Tord was pleasant and got the work done quickly -- in a little over an hour. He answered my questions/concerns calmly and logically; showed me how to turn off/on the pilot. Some clean up afterwards might be an issue for some. Approx. week later I called office (at correct number this time) and got immediate answer from a courteous Jason on my warranty form questions. I'd recommend them.

I called on Thursday and they were able to schedule an appointment for the next day. They called back a bit later to reschedule, since someone else had just been given the same time. This was quite understandable, and we scheduled another appointment for Saturday, which went well. The service man was polite and helpful. When he realized that the water heater he'd brought was taller than the old one, so that the exhaust pipes would not fit, he informed the owner, Jason, who offered to substitute another water heater of the right height, at the same price, though it was in fact slightly more expensive. The job was completed in about an hour, and the new heater works fine. Jason was very helpful and friendly from the first time I called to the end of the job.

Jim, the service tech was very friendly and knowledgeable as were the folks answering the phones. He diagnosed the issue as a broken safety bulb and identified a couple of possible contributing factors. The part could only be obtained from the manufacturer and (after they insisted) Jim was kind enough to call in personally and confirm the diagnosis and request the part. The part arrived next day and Jim came out again to install it. We were charged for two service trips which is the only reason it was $225 instead of just about $120.

Called first thing Monday morning (4/26/10) and explained that our gas water heater's blower had stopped working. The rep said they would have their technician, Dave, out there later that morning and that he was an expert on A.O. Smith (the manufacturer). He showed up on time but then my wife called me and said he asked for the manual (which I realized was a bad sign) and I had her relay to him that I wasn't sure where it and had just the online manual and that she could log into our home PC for him to look at it. He told my wife he thought he knew what the problem was and made a vague reference to ordering a part to fix the blower and would be back Tuesday or Wednesday. When there was no word by Wed. afternoon, I had to make several phone calls to the office and Dave's cell phone and left messages and didn't hear back until late that Wed. that it would be Thursday or Friday and Dave gave me an estimate of $180 for the repair and he was waiting for the part, which I said was okay but at the high end of what I was willing to pay since the heater was 8 years old. I decided to check online for the part he had to order and even spoke with A.O. Smith Parts department and they said the part Dave talked about ordering wasn't sold separately that a whole new blower would have to be bought which cost $350 which was way more than I wanted to spend. Finally, Friday morning he said he would stop by the plumbing supply store and pick up the part and would be out to try and install it Friday afternoon but there was a chance it wouldn't work and that then the blower would have to be replaced, which would cost more than $300 which I told him was more than I was willing to spend. When I hadn't heard anything by late Friday afternoon, I called and left a msg for Dave that I was going to have someone else take care of the problem and I never heard back from Dave or the company at all. As a final note, I found from their website that WHP installs tankless water heaters and I was prepared to have them replace our tank water heater with a tankless but their lousy follow up made me change my mind plus when I looked up the models of tankless water heaters to make sure they qualified for the federal energy tax credit those models were not included.

Response from Water Heaters Plus! Inc
This is a situation that doesn't happen very often with AO Smith water heaters. This Powervent model does have a common problem with the hot surface igniter. That is the $180.00 part the the customer is referring to. We did send David out to repair the water heater and the igniter did not work. We did tell the customer that we would have to check on the blower motor for price and availability. We did inform the customer that this was an expensive part and he would most likely want to buy a new water heater. We also informed the customer that a chance existed that the motor might not be the only issue but it was the next step. In instances where electrical surges occur every electrical item on the heater can go bad. The customer was very upset, Understandably. Dave had informed the office the customer was upset and insisted that we repair the heater for the $180.00. This was only based on the most common repair for his type of heater. We did try to contact this customer a few different times once we received the price from AO Smith. Since we had not charged this customer anything for our service and did not hear back we assumed he repaired the part himself or went another route. Jason Ruby

I called Friday afternoon because my old gas water heater was leaking and made arrangments for replacement the following day (Sat) within a 2 hour window. The price quoted over the phone included all fees with only a few caveats. The technician called the next day to tell me he would be at the late end of the window and I suggested he not come until Monday. I was surprised when he offered to come on Sunday (no xtra charge). He arrived promptly, completed the work and it was exactly the price quoted. Torg was very conscientious about cleaning up after himself also which was very nice. He had to move a rather heavy file cabinet over to access the water heater; my only wish is that he had moved it back before he left as I could not. After he left, I noticed the hot water was not flowing from my kitchen faucet. I called the office number, but the gentleman who answered the phone was obviously on call as I could hear children in the background. Although it was Sunday, he offered to have someone come back immediately to remedy the situation. I told him the next day would be fine. Dealing with this company was easy. I felt they were honest and ethical. The customer service was top-notch with every company contact. It is never pleasant to have to spend a lot of money unexpectedly on a home repair, but they made it as painless as possible.

Due to space constraints, we decided to have a tankless water heater installed in our small laundry room. It was replacing a 40 gallon standard heater. We initially spoke with Jason at one of the Columbus home shows. He came to our home, gave us an estimate which was well below other estimates we received. He is very personable and knowledgeable. He explained the pros and cons of a tankless water heater. We set an appointment for installation which was within a week of the estimate. 2 men arrived promptly on the morning of installation. They did a superb job. (If you are thinking of this as a DIY project...don't do it. There is a lot of pipe installation, wiring, and outside venting involved.) They know what they are doing. Unrelated to above, we also had them install a Steam humidifier on our furnace. We love it!

The contractor gave us an estimate on a new water heater, but we decided to order one elsewhere and to have the contractor pick it up and install it. The contractor was very flexible about scheduling and was able to do the installation with only a couple of days' advance notice. Unfortunately, the contractor (who seems to conduct business exclusively by cell phone) forgot to write down the appointment, so the job ended up starting 90 minutes late. Still, the crew finished it that day.

I called on Friday about noon and got an immediate quote over the phone which was about $200 cheaper than our local big box home improvement store. They said they could do the replacement today or Monday and I said I needed it today. The technician was in the area and had a cancellation so they arrived within 45 minutes to do the repair. Since our home is only 7 years old the repair went very quickly and they removed the old unit without leaking any rusty water on the way out.
