We had a hard surface roof over our family room but it was too heavy so John Sweeney from Right on Roofing Company did a tear off and replaced the roof with shingles. He matched the shingles very closely to the rest of the roof. We were very pleased with his work. He charged us $2300 and the price also included the installation of a double layer of ice and water shielding and a new gutter system in that same area of the roof. I’ve had an association with Right on Roofing Company since we moved into this house in 2005. John Sweeney had done the initial inspection of our home then. Shortly after we had moved into this house, we had noticed that some very large icicles had formed in the upper roof of the family room. The icicles cascaded down and tore the roof up. We called Mr. Sweeney and he came right away, securely covered our roof until the weather cleared. He came back and repaired it for us. We were happy with his service and since then we have used him yearly for roof inspections and for repairs that have come up. He has also worked on our gutter system in the past. We are very happy with his staff. They are prompt and courteous. They come in and work non-stop until the job is done. They do a professional job. I think his prices could be a little better though. I would continue to use Right on Roofing Company in the future.

Before we purchased our home, our home inspector told us that our slate roof was aged and in need of further inspection by a professional roofer. We went with Right on Roofing on the recommendation of our real estate agent. John from Right on Roofing came out and inspected the slate roof and the flat roofs. He gave us a quote to replace the existing flat roof, and one to either replace the existing slate roof with asphalt shingles or repair the existing slate roof--but he recommended repairing the existing roof. The sellers agreed to pay the company for the repairs which would take place after we took ownership of the house. Right on Roofing came out on time, as expected, and made "repairs" to our slate roof and replaced our flat roofs. Everything seemed to be fine for a month or two until we had a leak in our kitchen ceiling. We assumed that the water must be coming from a place other than the roof, since it was just serviced, but the handyman we called confirmed the leak was coming from the slate roof. Someone had repaired it by nailing the slate to the roof -- definitely not a recommended practice. ***I'm not saying that Right on Roofing made this repair -- it is possible that these repairs were made this way by one of the previous owners. But, if Right on Roofing did not make this repair, then they neglected to to notice it during their inspection of our roof, which is equally as shoddy in my opinion.*** We made a temporary repair, and proceeded to experience additional leaks in the kitchen and in other parts of our home. During a thaw in December, we experienced a big leak in our son's bedroom, which prompted us to contact other roofers for their opinions. It was the consensus from several other roofing companies that the several areas of the slate roof had been shoddily repaired (e.g., some slates had been calked or glued to the existing slates, others had been wedged between existing slates, and others showed evidence of being nailed or screwed to the existing roof) and that the roof would be better served by being replaced rather than repaired. **Again, these failed repairs may have been made by Right on Roofing or they may have been made by another service provider prior to us owning the home. However, if Right on Roofing did not make these repairs, they should have noticed them during their inspection of our roof.*** Additionally, during its inspection, Right on Roofing failed to notice that our roof was missing the guards that prevent ice from building up on the slate roof and eventually sliding off onto the flat roof or the ground below. Other contractors informed us that this should have been an easy catch -- instead, an snow/ice build up on the north side of our house eventually onto the gutter, tearing it free from the house and requiring us to replace it. Also, separate contractors confirmed that our flat roof repairs had been completed incorrectly -- the wrong material had been used and it was incorrectly installed. Although we are not currently having a problem with them, we were told to expect them to begin to leak and require replacement in the next 5-10 years -- about half the expected lifespan of a correctly installed flat roof. We ended up having to pay another company to tear off the slate roof, replace it with a new asphalt single roof to stop the leaks, and to install a new gutter to replace the damaged one.

Response from Right-On Roofing Inc
I, John Sweeney, suggested that Member contract for a removal and replacement of his existing roofing material which was slate. Member stated he wanted to keep the aesthetics of the slate roof, and he opted to do the repairs along with the two (2) new EPDM (rubber) roofs. I then complied with the contract and performed the 125 slate repairs as agreed and completed another 24 slate repairs in addition to the aforementioned 125 slate repairs. I did not charge for the additional 24 slate repairs. The quality of workmanship is evidenced by the 6 months of no issues following the completion of the work on June 1, 2010. We do not have any control over the amount of snow that falls nor over how much damage that snow along with ice may cause on a roof. We do have control over our professional opinion and advice, which in this case was to remove the slate roof and install a new fiberglass - asphalt shingle roof. We do not have any control over Member's desire and decision to choose a repair over a replacement. The repairs in the pictures were NOT DONE BY RIGHT-ON ROOFINING, INC. These repairs had been done before Right-On Roofing, Inc. was hired. I explained to Member that if he decided to keep and maintain the slate roof, that some of the incorrectly done repairs would have to be corrected over time to get the roof back into better aesthetic condition. There were no signs that snow birds were present from the time the house was built in 1946. When the history of the house and roof shows no evidence of snow or ice back up problems, or cascading snow problems, then it is normal to expect the same in the future. The two (2) new EPDM (rubber) roofs and slate repairs were executed in our normal and usual professional manner and carry a ten (10) year workmanship guarantee. EPDM (rubber) roofs installed by Right-On Roofing, Inc. normally have a service life over twenty (20) years and that includes no requirement of maintenance or repairs in that time.

We saved $14,300 by avoiding this roofer.
Description of Work: The following facts are well documented. A prospective buyer had made an offer on our home sale, contingent on results of termite, septic and general home inspections. On the day of the inspections, Jenny, the buyer's agent for Howard Hanna, solicited a bid from Right-On Roofing, as if it were an inspection report. We did not ask for this bid. No inspection report was ever issued by Right-On. Instead, they submitted a $14,800 bid for complete replacement of the roof, and the buyer demanded that this be done. We contacted another roofer (who was highly rated by Angies List and the Better Business Bureau). He did a "tune-up" for $500 and estimated that the roof had four to six more years of life. The buyer was satisfied.

I was asked to do a inspection on a roof and found that the roof was in bad condition and should be replaced. I gave member a verbal estimate and asked if she needed it in writing, she said she did not need it in writing at this time.I did not talk to or even know who the owner of the house was, nor did they try to contact me to ask about the inspection i did. I was not asked to give a written report on the roof or i would have.

They know what they are doing and do a good job, but unfortunately I felt that they were dishonest on a couple of occasions and that their price was very high. I didn't get many quotes because one of these jobs was an emergency, but in retrospect I will most likely never use them again because I felt that I was taken advantage of and after calling around, I was correct in feeling this way.

John Sweeney got back to me very promptly, came and gave an estimate a day later and then had his men come to fix the leaks within the week. I checked previous reports on his work and found the quoted price was in keeping with a similar job on a garage. The men worked efficiently and cleared up well and were confident they had found the source of the leaks. When they were on the roof, they found that 2 tiles needed replacing and the price of these was the only addition to the initial estimate, John telephoned to check that we wanted the tiles. I have waited to file the report to check that the repairs have held up through the winter and spring .... and so far so good! John had been recommended to us by 2 neighbors, but it was great to see their opinion confirmed by Angie's List members. Also it turned out he had previously checked out our roof and laid to rest concerns we had about the chimney.
Description of Work: We had 2 leaks in our roof, either side of a large gable, following the heavy rain in August 2007. Both leaks were in places that we could tell had previously leaked, because of discolored plaster work.

I called John Sweeney and got a quick response. He came to the house and told me I did not need a new roof - that the shingle could be replaced and that he would go across the roof and re-nail where the shingles were rippling. He also gave me advice about the front of the roof where there had been some ice dams.
Description of Work: The roof had a shingle which was blown off during the winter and some bumps from where the nails were poking through.

Although I am ultimately pleased with the result, I have to say that I have never had to work so hard to get a contractor to: (a) Return my initial calls, (b) To get an estimate and (c) To get the work scheduled. I know, I know, why would I go with a contractor who couldn't be bothered to return my initial calls. I ask myself that same question now, but I had just moved back to my hometown after 20 years away; I was told by several people (including my broker) that this roofing company was THE BEST; etc., etc. Looking back, I wouldn't do it again. I started calling this company in early August. Only after my broker intervened and placed a call to the roofer did I get a call back (quite some time after my initial calls). I had similar response issues getting a written estimate and getting the work scheduled. Again, the work appears to have been done very well, but I just don't want to have to chase someone that much to get it done. From initial call to finish, 3 months.

They had the whole job done in one day. They had about ten roofers, started about 8 in the morning and finished about 6pm. They were very neat, clean, and cautioned me about not driving in the driveway so i wouldn't drive over the nails. They cleaned that up thoroughly so i wouldn't punch a hole in my tires. Two days later i thought i saw a piece of the roof sticking up and they came right out to make sure that wasn't the case.
