Description of Work: I had asked other roofers for an estimate and we were set to go with the other roofers but then I asked for gutters and got no response. I called Muth and they were on it. They did not respond to my house immediately but they gave a reasonable time frame and appeared on time. They gave a reasonable estimate and showed up when promised. The job took them a day less than planned. When they found plywood sheeting that needed to be replaced they called me and informed me. The gutters were done on time and to specification. Good job and competitive pricing! Highly recommended.

Company did inspection and recommended repairs we could do ourselves or we could get an estimate from them. We did so and had them back to install attic rafter vents and to vent our bathroom fans from the attic to outside the house for additional cost. We were happy with their work.

They were easy to schedule with and came on time. They cleaned our gutters thoroughly and gave us a thorough assessment of all the repairs they saw that needed to be done on the roof. They gave us estimates for these repairs and offered to schedule to come out for those as well. They were very helpful and explained exactly what needed to be done.

They did an attic inspection for insulation, and told us that everything looked good (a relief). In the process, they found that we need to have a roof vent above our bathroom to avoid any mold. They said they would do part of the work once we got Durable Slate to do the slate-related part. They followed up a number of times to offer to do the work, which I felt reflected a solid business on top of their game. As it turns out, we need to use Durable Slate entirely because of our slate roof.

The Gist: Few roofing companies do what I would call "impressive" work. It's roofing, after all, not art restoration. Hands down, Muth and Co. does impressive work. I can share our first rate experience, without reservation. But that is only half the story. How a company does what they're paid for is one thing. How they respond to circumstances beyond their control, and how they support their client after the sale is much more telling. As long as I live in the Greater Columbus Area, I will never use nor recommend another roofing company but Muth. The initial sales process: Our salesperson Kelly was prompt, informative, flexible, personable, and always available. Chad Muth, the owner, was on our site several times and always within reach by phone. His crew didn't seem to need the supervision, but it was nice to know that the guy with his name on the truck takes an active part in his business and is willing to swing a hammer. Ours was an insurance job (hail damage) but we wanted to make some extra-cost improvements including better ventilation, better shingles, etc. They weren't pushy, and didn't play games to defraud my insurance company like so many roofing companies do. That said, I was well informed about what I was buying and Kelly and Chad helped us to clearly understand what options were available and the pros/cons of each. Pricing was what I would have called "fair" at the time. They weren't my low quote, but they weren't my high quote either. As the situation unfolded, I'd adjust that to "a bargain at any price." My insurance company wasn't thrilled that I wouldn't use their general construction "guy" to do the work, but they had nice things to say about working with Muth, too. The scheduling/installation process, part 1: John took good care to communicate with us about when our job would be done, and they started when they said they would and finished early. The crew, headed by Simon and El Fuego (no, really) was...astounding. Clean, efficient, courteous, and faaaaast. They had no problem with me poking around to see what they were doing out of curiosity, and took care to make sure I knew what was going on at each stage of the project. They tarped everything around the house to protect my landscaping, and even used a chute on the dumpster to make sure no nails got onto the driveway which is right next to the house. Our roof is complicated, and involved a lot of cutting and a lot of sheetmetal work. It's perfect. Laser straight edges, lips bent with a brake not by hand, you name it. It looks marvelous. Unlike a lot of roofing companies, they were self-sufficient, too. They brought gas compressors and generators, and though I offered they didn't use power, water, garage space...nothing. I'm pretty sure they didn't even ask to use the restroom. To say the site was cleaned well would be an understatement. In the weeks following the install, I found one nail in the yard, despite the fact I forgot to cut the grass that week and it was at least 5" tall. They stripped 33 squares of roofing, two layers deep, and dropped...one. Nail. The wrap-up, part 1: As I would expect, all paperwork was top-notch, I was informed of my warranty, checks were cashed on time, etc. The post-sales support "situation": Our original work with Muth was performed in 2006. They did as I describe above, a beautiful roof installation. All the bells and whistles, in truth a little overbuilt. In the intervening years, we got lots of compliments on it from the neighbors, and we didn't think anything more of it. We recommended them to several friends and neighbors. In 2010, however, I was working in the attic, coincidentally during a windstorm, and noticed a few drops of water from one pitch of the roof. More than a few, not a torrent. When the weather cleared, I got out my ladder and did an inspection. Along one section of the roof, I found a handful of shingles that were cracked in the middle, and had lifted in the 50MPH wind, then laid back down. The shingles we bough were rated to 70MPH, so I was a little perplexed. It looked as though the tar strips on the undersides had never sealed. Only one face of the roof seemed to be affected, but it was a pretty wide area. This surprised me, because the original install had happened in August when it was 95º out, and the roof is a dark color. So I called Kelly. He responded within the same business day, and within two more both he and Chad were on my roof themselves, doing a hands-and-knees inspection and taking notes. The verdict, determined after some research, was that we had received a bad batch of shingles from the manufacturer (GAF) and that we'd have to make a warranty claim. In the meantime, they sealed the affected shingles by hand, but said that that wasn't an appropriate solution long-term, since it was only five years old, and had a 30-year warranty. They were confident that GAF would honor the claim, and that they would follow up with me. Kelly got back to me promptly with a few warranty claim forms to fill out, which I did, and informed me that matters were complicated somewhat by the fact that GAF no longer produced my shingle in the color that we had purchased...which would necessitate a complete tear-off and re-roof in a similar color. At this point, Chad and Kelly were still confident that GAF would honor the terms of their warranty. GAF, however, was not initially as compliant as we had all hoped. Clearing the claim took months. Their warranty process was mostly to blame, but since Chad and Kelly had hand-sealed my roof to buy some time, I wasn't overly concerned about timeline. Chad and Kelly updated me as things progressed, and we talked frequently to make sure I wasn't having more issues. Over the next few months, not only did Chad personally handle the claim, he and Kelly worked directly with their GAF sales reps and company leaders to get my claim paid, and... (wait for it) ...completely reform the way warranty claims are handled by GAF corporate to make sure similar situations don't arise in the future. This is why one would want to work with a roofing company, instead of a general contractor or restoration firm. Good vendor relationships. I was contacted by GAF for input into this process, during which time they demonstrated that they had actually been listening when he made suggestions! They took their sweet time about it, but GAF demonstrated that they actually cared about their work, too. The scheduling/installation process, part 2: As above. I worked with John on scheduling, and they were prompt and professional. Materials were delivered when they said they would be. The work was done to the same high standard as before. The site was spotless when they were done. The crew, this time led by Raul, were astonishingly efficient. The wrap-up, part 2: As above. All paperwork in order, top notch all the way around. The customer service experience: Despite the fact that Muth must've had hundreds of phone calls and countless hours of unbillable time negotiating this warranty claim, they never once gave me the indication that they resented it, or would stop until the job was done the right way. Frustrating though it must have been, Chad, Kelly, John and everybody else were as sweet as pie through the whole thing. Personable, responsible, professional businessmen and women, without exception. I can't recommend them heartily enough.

(I can't find the "member comments field," but I felt like my quote/estimate experience was worth sharing.) When I called for a quote for gutter cleaning/fixing up what needed fixing on our roof, they told me right on the phone that the minimum charge for coming out to a house like ours (2000 sq ft ranch) was probably going to be $275, which is a lot higher than more local quotes I'd gotten, but they had good reviews on here, so I thought I'd see what they had to say. Their conclusion on looking at the roof was that I should get an "ESP" service plan - about a hundred dollars more than the minimum charge for once-yearly gutter cleaning and roof check-up. They said that with the plan, we should be able to get another 3-5 years out of my roof. I've had three other places give gutter quotes and two of them looked at the roof as well. General consensus is that it isn't new, but seems to be working fine, just some attention needed around one or more of the soil stacks (although not complete consensus as to what that attention is). I felt kind of like when the leaf-guard guy was telling me that my gutters were going to be blown off in the next wind storm. I declined the offer and explained that those service plans make me feel like someone is trying to take advantage of my inexperience with home maintenance. I guess some people are that much more concerned about convenience than price, but not me. If you like the idea of the extended service plan, give them a call.

We did recommend the ESP, extended service plan; we do think it is a very good choice for anyone's roof. We consider it like maintenance plan for your car. We have over 300 services plans that we do each and every year. Customers love it. We do have a minimum charge, it covers our travel, time out and office staff, that minimum charge is $275. Our charge covers most small jobs we encounter where as most companies charge a smaller fee then they add on for any work that they do on the customers residence, we only add on if more work is needed and we give an estimate prior to any additional work being completed. As you can plainly see, we have over 600 positive reviews and we try to be upfront and forward with all of our pricing. We hope this customer found the right company for her and got her work completed to her satisfaction. Gina Muth- VP of Administration

When Kelly came to give the estimate he was extremely thorough in his explanation on what was going on my roof and how it was going on there. His estimate came in $1,500 cheaper than another estimate I received from another company. He took care of obtaining all the necessary permits from the Village of Granville, which entailed filling out paperwork and attending a hearing. Might seem like a small thing, but having done it before, I can say it was incredibly nice to have someone else take care of it for us! We were out of town when the roof went up, but when we got back, it sure looked good and there was no mess left behind. I absolutely would recommend Muth and Co. Roofing.

Muth and Co. came out 3 weeks prior to the service and gave our leaking roof a thorough check and provided us with an estimate. The project turned out to be much more extensive (chimney rotted on the inside) yet the company rep stuck with the initial estimate even though it took more lumber and time that originally anticipated. This is quite unusual and we offered to pay more, but he said no, just the estimate. They also were so professional and up on the newest technology. To show us the damage and then the repair, they took several very clear pictures on their ipad to show us the extent of the damage and how extensive their repair was. We were delighted to find a company that was so honest, so competent, and so nice. They estimated our existing roof will likely last only a year or two more. Guess who we're going to call when the complete roof needs to be replaced! They put a special layer on the roof before they put on the new shingles so that the roof will never leak like ours did. Our roof is only 19 years old, but the contractor who originally built the house put on the cheapest shingles and didn't do the thorough job that Muth did for us.
Description of Work: Our 19 year old roof began to leak into our upstairs sewing room and the wall became stained and mildewed. Every time it rained, we were going to have continued problems. After opening up the area under the chimney, the Muth company worker found that our entire chimney was rotten on the inside! They went to the extra trouble and expense and fixed the base of the chimney and made sure it wasn't going to fall off. They used wood, stucco, paint, shingles and even fixed some other spots that looked like the could be troublesome in the future. These professionals repaired our roof as if it were their own and I have no doubt that they do all their jobs the same way. They were so quiet that I took a nap while they were fixing the roof! They cleaned up every bit of trash left over. Thank you, Muth professionals and thank you Angies List for finding these gentlemen for us!

They were amazing. Amazing follow up and communication. Very concerned with making sure that I was pleased with the work and the progress. While installing the new downspouts they worked with me to make sure that we were using my preferred style and delivered them to the house early so that I could paint them before installation, even offering to touch up the downspouts after they were installed. I would recommend them highly and would most definitely use them in the future.

A 2 man team came out to perform an energy audit of room (check insulation levels, etc). One was more knowledgeable than the other - I believe he was the tech and the other guy was sales. They checked out main attic & attic space above garage. There was a slight problem that they did not have a ladder of adequate size with them - I lent them ours which was barely tall enough. Once in the attic, they identified that we had sufficient insulation but inadequate ventilation and that we needed new baffles. They gave me a quote for the work that needed to be done but I thought it was rather high. I have not however quoted out the work to other companies and I felt I got my money's worth for $87, particularly as they were willing to apply it to the cost of work needing to be done. I would have been upset if I had paid the "regular" non-special price, however. I was overall pleased with the service and felt that they were honest in their assessment of what was needed. I may use them for the work needed in the Spring.- c

The experience with Muth was very disappointing to say the least. They were quick to respond to the call and no follow up after that.
Description of Work: I had ask for an inspection of our chimmney and a quote to do repairs based on the inspection. After a review of the photos and discussion of our request for a quote from the service tech he informed me that I would receive a quote and a copy of the photos in about a week. On 09/27/2012, we did go to the customer’s house. We took pictures of the project and brought them back to the office to show a supervisor and to discuss whether this job was a job that we would have the ability to do the work or if we needed to recommend that he call someone else. We have been extremely busy and his paperwork was lost in the shuffle. We are so very sorry that we misplaced his paperwork in the office. We wish the customer would have contacted us directly; we would’ve personally apologized to him and sent his paperwork out immediately. As you can see from all of our positive reports, we pride ourselves in giving our customers the best possible service and we did not live up to that this time. In the future we recommend a simple phone call to our office if you did not receive what you expected and we will deal with it immediately. Gina Muth-VP of Administration

Wonderful. Don't settle for less and do ask as many questions as you want. Sid and John know that I ask every question possible. I even asked Luis, the roofing crew chief how many roofing nails are used per shingle, he told me six. That is what I wanted to here!
Description of Work: Muth tore off two previous roofers shingles, replaced with GAF Weather Stopper Timberline Shingles with Ice guard, 30 felt, painted valleys, drip edges, ridege venting, soilboots, reflashing, GAF Starter Strips, Hip & Rige Caps, 42 soffit vents, anchors, etc, with all new 6 inch gutters on a residential apartment building. Most owners would not touch this with rental units, but I looked around at other roofing contractors that were recommended by Angies List and I couldn't believe all the ripples in other roofers' jobs. Sid, John, Luis (and crew) made this roof better than I could have imagined. Each person listened to what I wanted and made the job look great. The gutter crew with Muth, Josh and Brian, took the time to make those 6 inch gutters so much better than old ones. What I liked the most is how the salesman and the roofing crew took me around the building to show me troubled spots where they thought there might be damaged wood while explaining what they would do to fix it. They know there materials and they customize everything for the customer. That is what I wanted and that is exactly what I got. I will recommend them to everyone. They are not the cheapest, but cheap does not bring good long term results. Thanks guys, Louise Johnston

Everything went really well, from start to finish. Both Sid, my contact person, and the work crew did a great job. The work crew had to take off a couple layers of old shingles and discovered some bad boards underneath. Putting new boards on added to the cost, but this had been mentioned upfront as a possibility. When finished, the crew did a great job of cleaning everything up. I am very happy with the job that Muth did!
Description of Work: I purchased a special Angies List deal from Muth & Co Roofing in June 2011. Someone came out to inspect my roof. They recommended that I get a new roof in the next few years. I decided to get several estimates for a new roof, and then decided to have this done shortly afterwards. I chose to go with Muth & Co even they did not have the lowest estimate.

On 4/18/2011, we did go the residence to perform a big deal extended service plan. We found many cracked and loose shingles, rotted soil boots, rusted and bent up wall flashings and rusted valley flashings. We painted, sealed, re-nailed and cleaned as stated in the big deal offer along with providing a detailed check list. We did recommended that getting a new roof would be more sensible than attempting all the repairs necessary to ensure they would not have additional roofing issues in the near future. We would never recommend a new roof or repairs if we did feel that they were necessary. Gina Muth-VP of Administration

Started by contacting four companies using Angie's List ratings. Narrowed it down to two very good firms. Went with Muth. For a customer, there are two primary points of contact: > THE SALESPERSON: Matt was knowledgeable and responsive. He met with us two or three times; provided shingle samples; and gave us addresses of various homes in our area that had different kinds of roofs they had installed. He NEVER pressured us; gave his opinion about styles and colors when asked; and, of course, taught us a lot about the basics of roofing. He said he would be the "contact person" throughout the process, and he was. > THE INSTALLATION: Matt was at the house first thing to make sure the installation team got off the ground -- and that everything we had discussed with Matt was also understood by the installers. We had some HVAC ducts rerouted, and he coordinated that with the subcontractor as well. Cannot say enough about the installation team. Those guys were outstanding; wasted absolutely no time; but also cared about the quality of the job. The job took almost three days, and they cleaned the job site each night (about 8:00pm) before leaving.

I contacted 3 companies to all come out on the same day to provide an estimate for gutter repair and inspect my roof for any damage caused from storms. Of the 3 companies contacted, Muth was the only company that called me the day of their inspection to let me know they were on their way to my house as well as being the only company of the 3 that actually got back with me after the inspection and provided an estimate for me for the work to be done. I got the estimate from Muth but was waiting word from one other company that was scheduled to come out at a later date. I chose this other company instead but would have no issues in choosing Muth for any other estimate and or work that would need done.

Shingles from our roof were blown off and/or damaged by June 29th storm. Called Muth Roofing on Saturday, June 30th and got message that they were out of office until Monday. To my surprise, I got a call from Chad Muth on Sunday. He told me that he had over 80 messages about the storm. We spoke for several minutes about the damages and what steps needed to be taken to fix my roof. I was impressed that Chad took time to explain the process about filing an insurance claim and getting the roof tarped. He said he would get someone out on Monday to cover the roof. Crew came out Monday. They were very professional and took many photos. Based on their assessment, they were recommending a new roof. I contacted my insurance company to file a claim. Kelly from Muth & Co. met the insurance adjuster at my home and they inspected the roof together. We met with Kelly to go over our options for replacing our roof. He was very professional and he spent over an hour explaining the process to us. The actual roof tear-off and replacement went exactly as Kelly had explained. The crew was very professional and they did a good job cleaning up each day. Overall, we are very pleased with the entire experience.

I obtained 3 quotes for a new roof. Muth's salesman was by far the most polished and knowledgeable. He educated us on the appropriate ventilation scheme for the house and inspected everything including the attic/crawlspace with recommendations on how to do our job properly. I evaluated the bids and awarded to Muth (which was moderately the highest) because of Muth's reputation and the effort their salesperson put forth. The subs started on a Monday and of course it rained. So they got material delivered and started Tuesday bright and early. The subs worked 5 days straight literally from sun up to sun down and completed the first go around Saturday evening. Monday morning Muth's hourly employees were there for the punch list items such as replacing the cedar trim, flapper vent and soffit vent installations etc.... now comes my problem with Muth...they definitely in my opinion overpromised and underperformed. Attention to detail was lacking. My expectations from a highly recommended Angie's list company was of superior performance. They stated they would clean all the soffit vents and add several new ones. This was not done until I called them back to do it. I inspected the roof sheeting from the inside and found 1 entire sheet that need replaced had been missed. This required a revisit to pull the newly installed shingles and replace the sheet. My attic inspection also identified a huge mess of cardboard that their salesman and I had to clean up after they were all gone. So my final conclusion is they are an average company that requires constant supervision and are not worth the premium cost.
Description of Work: Remove and replace shingles for entire 3500 sq ft house including approximately 50 sheets of plywood that had visible mold. Added many baffles for proper ventilation as well as replace all original and add soffit vents and 3 flapper vents. Remove and replace damaged cedar trim.
