The morning of July 24th, 2012, I left to coach a volleyball open gym at 8:40am and it was very apparent that rain was soon on its way. This was evidenced both by radar, and a visible storm front to the West. After I left, Jet-Seal, LLC came to begin work. My fiancée was home at the time, and spoke with them as they began work. In the process, he accidentally locked himself out of the house so I returned at 9:40am to unlock the door, at which time they had already edged around the driveway, sealed the cracks, and were beginning to apply the refined coal tar emulsion pavement sealer. The storm front was much closer, so I asked the worker if the weather was going to be a problem and he told me that they were closely watching the radar and had put a quick dry agent in the sealer to help it dry faster. They appeared knowledgeable and aware of the impending storm and I returned to coach the open gym at 9:50am. At approximately 10:15 it began to rain, and heavy storms continued until about 1:00pm. The storm washed away a majority of the sealer as well as splattered up onto the house, damaging the garage door and house siding around the garage door. I also noticed that the sealer had gotten on the concrete up by the garage door and down at the other end of the driveway. Toward the end of the storm, I called Jet-Seal, LLC and informed them that a majority of the sealer had washed away and the woman who answered the phone informed me that that can happen when it has not completely dried before getting rained on and that they would come out and reseal the driveway. After the storm was over, my fiancé noticed that splattering had occurred on our house and called Jet-Seal, LLC to inform them of the damage. When I returned home from lunch at about 3:00pm, I called Jet-Seal, LLC to inquire about what would be done to fix the damaged garage door and siding. The woman responded that the owner would call me when he returned, and he did around 4:00pm. He assured me that they would make the necessary repairs and use a painter to fix the damage to the garage door and siding. He also said he would be out the next day to take a look and they would be out to reseal the driveway. They very promptly came out and resealed the driveway on the morning of July 25th, 2012. Afterward, the owner stopped by and brought a solvent to test on the siding to remove the sealer. The sealer did come off the siding where he sampled it, but due to the age of the paint on the house, the color was greatly affected by the solvent. He also suggested power washing as a possibility for fixing the color variation while using the solvent and that the painter would try his best to color match the existing paint and paint the three rows of aluminum siding affected by the sealer splatter on each side of the garage as well as all of the garage door and surrounding trim. I inquired as to why they decided to seal the driveway before a major storm and he told me that those are the risks of the business and that the day before, the radar had also called for rain so they postponed their jobs for the day but it hadn't rained at all. He said that they can be overly cautious one day and that the next they may be too aggressive when choosing whether or not to do a job when it looks like it is going to rain. I was also informed that they carry a 3 foot roll of paper in their trucks to help protect the building if they think the rain may cause some splatter, but that his employees were certain everything was dry enough when they left. He promised me he would not stop making repairs or cash my check until I was 100% satisfied. He shared with me how long he had been in business and that their goal as a business was to retain customers, not get done and get out. He said he would have a painter out quickly, and called and left a message that evening that a painter would be out around 7:00am the next morning. The painters began work around 7:30am the next morning, July 26th, 2012. I asked the painter if they were using a primer on the garage door before they painted and he told me they were using Sherwin William's Superpaint that has special addititives to ensure that the sealer splatter would not bleed through and that they would paint two coats. I also inquired about the Sherwin Williams Color To Go Paint he was using on the siding, since I was told by Sherwin William's that, when using the Color To Go paint samples, they were only for testing color and should be sealed if used as a paint (which it states on the label as well). The painter called the local Sherwin William's store and the Sherwin William's employee said it could be used as a paint but would not have the same resilience as using their other paints so it wouldn't last as long. At this time, the painter had already painted a potion of the siding on one side of the garage. The Color to Go sample was close but a noticeable difference remained. I was very disappointed, since although the house paint had oxidized due to normal wear, it had done so consistently and had not been previously damaged in a noticeable way. At this time, the owner stopped by. I expressed to him that I would like to have the painters finish painting the rest of the siding around the garage only so that the color difference was not as apparent when looking at the house. He said that power washing the rest of the siding around the garage would decrease the difference in the color. I asked who was going to do the power washing and received no answer from the owner or the painter. He finally inquired with the painter about how much additional money it would cost, to which the painter replied $100. He asked me if I would be 100% satisfied with the repairs and I replied that while painting the rest of the siding around the garage door would greatly improve the repairs, there was still damage to the concrete where the sealer had covered it. He told me that was not his sealer, and even said he would test it to prove it. He also told me that I should have told them not to begin working on the driveway the first time they came out to seal it, implying that it was my fault that the damage had occurred. I reminded him that he had implied that I should trust his company to make knowledgeable and appropriate decisions when I was told that I did not need to be there and could leave a check under the doormat. He also stated that the paint conditions of the garage door and siding were not good and that I should appreciate that my garage door would be freshly painted. At this time, the painter decided to interrupt with his own comments to support Jet-Seal, LLC's owner and encouraged me to be satisfied with what I was getting because my house was old and should have been repainted by now because then they wouldn't have a problem matching the color. I continued by saying that I would be happy as long as the painting around the rest of the garage door occurred, and that I would try to remove the sealer from the concrete myself. At this point the painters had stopped working and were waiting for the owner's decision. He told them to go ahead with it and left. While he was gone, they finished two (not three) aluminum panels on one side of the garage and painted three aluminum siding panels on the other side of the garage. They also painted the garage door and trim with one coat of paint. Then the owner returned with a personally typed statement that he wanted me to sign before they finished painting the rest of the siding around the garage. He said they would not paint it unless I signed the statement, which read "On July 24, 2012 Jet-Seal, LLC sealed my driveway at 108 Triesta Lane, Westerville, OH 43081. Before the sealer dried it rained, splashing sealer on the garage door and aluminum siding. Mr. Ted Lovell, President of Jet-Seal, LLC agreed to have a professional painter paint the garage door and the siding around it. Although the siding is badly oxidized and the garage door is showing signs of rust there was not driveway sealer on the respective surfaces prior to Jet-Seal sealing the driveway. The driveway has been re-sealed and after the painting is complete on the garage door and surrounding siding I agree to hold Mr. Lovell and Jet-Seal, LLC harmless and not to bring any further action, make any defamatory remarks or withhold payment." I pointed out that the previous condition of my house should not be relevant to him making reasonable repairs that I was satisfied with. I told him I was not asking him to paint my entire house, only a small additional portion of the siding around the garage so that the color was uniform. I also told him that his statement appeared to be dictating that I was not allowed to make an accurate review of his company and I asked what he meant by defamatory remarks. He told me I could make my own definition and said he was protecting himself from the possibility that I would demand more repairs. I suggested I would sign the statement if he removed the portion, "make any defamatory remarks" . That way he would feel protected and I would be free to make an accurate review of the events that occurred. He refused and was adamant that I sign it or the painters would not finish their work. I then said I would sign it after the work was completed and again he refused. I asked him if he was going to cash my check after he left when the promised repairs had not been finished and he responded that I should be happy with how accommodating he had been and that I would not find another company to seal my driveway that would do what he did. He told the painters to leave, got in his truck and left. The painters did not paint the rest of the siding around the garage and did not appear to have applied the second coat of paint to the garage door and surrounding trim. The owner cashed my check on 8/6/2012.
Description of Work: I am a new homeowner and have been making many repairs to my residence. I reviewed asphalt sealers on Angie's List and called Jet-Seal, LLC on Thursday July 19th, 2012 to get an estimate. On July 20th, 2012, after receiving a fair estimate, I called to schedule them to seal my driveway. They scheduled it for July 24th, 2012 (weather permitting) and said they would be out sometime during that day. They told me if I was not home, that I could leave a check for them under the doormat.

Response from Jet-Seal
Dear Angie’s List Members: This review leaves a lot to respond to so I’ll choose to focus on the valid points and attempt to keep my rebuttal as brief as possible. The homeowner goes into great detail about the weather forecast for the day we sealed her driveway. As we all know, weather forecasting is an educated guess at best. You can visit our website and navigate to “FAQ” and you will find this statement with regards to weather: Q). What happens if it rains after a sealcoating application? A.) Jet-Seal subscribes to a premium weather forecasting service that provides us with the most advanced tools to make an informed decision on whether or not to seal your driveway or parking lot. However, as you know, forecasting the weather is at best an educated guess. Typically, in less than an hour rain will not harm the application. In the event that it rains and does wash away some or all of the sealer we will provide another application free of charge. Notice that it states that “we will provide another application free of charge. No more. No less. The homeowner also admits that her fiancée was at home; outside during the entire process and that she was also there just prior to the time when the rain began. This was prior to any sealcoating being applied. Certainly, if she had such dire concerns about “the impending storm” (her words) she could have asked us to re-schedule. She did not. This implies to me that there was mutual consent to continue with the application process. I wish to make it abundantly clear that the sealer splatter was not caused by negligence such as sloppy work or equipment malfunction; it was caused by rain, an act of God. Jet-Seal was not legally required to do anything for the customer other than re-sealing. We were attempting to make an earnest attempt to satisfy the customer with no regard to taking a loss on the project. The next morning we re-sealed her driveway and as a courtesy I offered to have a professional painter come out the following morning and paint her garage door and three small panels of siding. I arrived around 7:45 and she was already in a profanity laced, heated argument with the painter over the quality of the paint and the color not matching the siding. The siding was forty five years old, badly oxidized and in need of painting or replacement. The garage door was rusting and had not been painted in at least a decade. She was demanding that all of the siding surrounding the garage door be painted. I asked her if painting the siding surrounding the garage door would satisfy her and she replied that it would. I presented her with a letter as she described in her review because I could see her demands escalating. I asked her to sign the agreement and I would consent to paint all of the siding surrounding the garage door. She refused. I paid the painter $230 and thanked him for his efforts. In summation, Angie’s List asked the homeowner “What words of advice would you give other members considering this contractor? Her answer was “Pay close attention to the weather and carefully observe the work being done so the same damage does not occur to your house.” I find these words of advice interesting due to the fact that either she or her fiancée watched the entire process from beginning to end. At any time either could have requested to postpone the project. We would have gladly obliged. For a more accurate depiction of the quality of our work check out all the other reviews on Angie’s List. Every other Angie’s List member has graded Jet-Seal with an overall A performance. Jet-Seal is also an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating. Jet-Seal was founded upon the philosophy that satisfying and retaining an existing customer is more important than finding a new one. We will continue with that same philosophy as long as I am operating the company. Sincerely, Ted Lovell President

I called on a Monday after looking on Angie's List. They came out the same day and gave me a quote. I called as soon as I received it and I was scheduled for Wednesday! The 2 young men were very professional. Our driveway is kind of small. Last year we used another company and paid over $100 for a double coat and it looked like crap. The driveway did not even last a full year before there were areas that were wearing away. The $69 included filling the cracks, barrier, and the prep work. It looks nice and I am very hopeful it will last a year before we have to do it again.

They provided a prompt quote and were forthcoming about the issues with our driveway.
Description of Work: JetSeal provided an estimate for our driveway. Our driveway is in pretty bad shape and they were honest and up-front with us about what needed to be done. For approximately $140 they would seal the driveway and fill the cracks. However, they told us that the driveway would continue to crack and crumble due to issues with it's base. Our best option is to just get a new driveway because the cracking and crumbling would continue to get worst in the future. I really appreciated their honesty about the situation.

Response from Jet-Seal
I contacted the customer and he confirmed that Jet-Seal DID NOT do the work. We gave him an estimate but another company was actually hired to do the work. I am more than a little frustrated with Angies List since this is the second time in a short period that Jet-Seal has been given a less than stellar review for work we did not perform. I probably won't be advertising with Angies List in the future. When we do work for Angies List customers we rarely get reviewed but we get bad reviews for work we didn't even perform.

We called for an estimate and someone came out within 24 hours and provided a written estimate. We had contacted another company at the same time for an estimate, as well, but they never called us back so we went ahead with Jet-Seal as the weather is quickly getting colder. I called and booked the appointment on a Thursday and they came out and did the work the following Tuesday. Overall, they did a great job and were done in about 1 1/2 hours. They blew the leaves off the driveway and washed it, then sealed it while being very careful of our stone retaining walls that border the driveway. They put up a stake on either side of the driveway and strung caution tape across them to block the driveway when they were done. I've never had an asphalt driveway before and they were very good about answering my questions, including how much life they thought was left on the driveway and some suggestions for when we replace it. Since all they do is seal existing driveways, it was nice to talk to somebody who knows a lot about driveways but wasn't trying to sell us a replacement. All in all, we'll continue to use them each year.
