The designer came to the house, went through options and pricing. We scheduled installation which smoothly. They did a great job keeping the areas clean and were very careful not to damage any of the surrounding areas that had been freshly painted.
Description of Work: They worked with us to designing and installing three closet systems in the master bedroom that were odd spaces in an old house.

The quality score of 4 is based on the installation process, NOT the finished product. Please read the entire review! We have a very oddly shaped mud room between our house and garage, with one wall that is at an angle. At the narrow end of the room, the wall is only about 4 feet wide. The opposite wall is over 12 feet. We had some general ideas about what we wanted, but just couldn't visualize it given the shape of the room. Our sales rep, Stacy, asked a lot of questions and proposed a number of options. In just one short visit, she sketched a plan that we really liked, doing a superb job of designing a storage solution that included a small bench seat, large cabinets, a base unit with a countertop, some open shelving and a slat wall to hang brooms, a step stool, etc. The design literally gave us every feature that we wanted. She varied the depths and configured the cabinets in such a way as to not crowd the narrow part of the room and to make it all aesthetically pleasing. She visited two more times to present CBD's offer and to go over some slight modifications that we requested. Each time, she went over the plan in detail to ensure we knew what we would be getting and that would be happy. We had no idea how much our project would cost and wanted to feel certain that we were getting the best value. After getting estimates from some custom cabinet makers and home improvement retailers using their standard sized cabinets, Closets By Design was definitely the best deal. Stacy worked very hard for our business and we believed her level of attention would ensure everything would be perfect. We paid the deposit, but took months to commit to a start date because we also wanted to have tile installed. Additionally, we wanted to use a set of glass sliding doors to cover two of the cabinets and needed some time to research what would work and to buy the doors. Stacy called periodically to see if we were ready to schedule the installation. After having our tile installed, we were finally ready for the cabinets and installation was scheduled for October 31. The installer, Brian, did an exceptional job and CBD, was very willing to work with us to build two of the cabinets around the sliding doors we wanted to use. Overall, the installation went well. The cabinets are solidly put together and the finished project is perfect. The only negatives were some issues that I would categorize as quality control of the project itself, not the product. We ordered one laminate for the countertop, but were sent another. The one we ordered had been discontinued, but there was no communication about it until we discovered it and called CBD. (We ended up liking the one we received much more than the one we ordered!) Most, but not all, of the doors were ready on the day of installation. The installer said that when some of the doors arrived, they were damaged and had to be reordered. We know those things happen and understood, but our preference would have been that the cabinets not be installed until all the materials were available. A panel above the bench seat has coat hooks. The ones that were installed were polished chrome instead of the brushed finish that we ordered (which is what had been installed for all the other knobs and handles.) The hardware that we needed was back at the factory, so we asked that they just send us the correct hooks. When we tried to install them, we realized a screw had been broken off inside the panel when they removed one of the incorrect hooks, so we asked them to come again to drill it out and install the correct ones. Installation took at least three visits (maybe four), which would have been very frustrating if we didn?t have the flexibility to be home when the installers could come back. Overall, the sales/design experience was exceptional; the quality control prior to installation needs improvement, but the final product is beautiful! The cabinets and drawers are well made and the crown molding and baseboards create a beautiful custom look. We LOVE the finished project and would highly recommend Closets By Design.
Description of Work: Closets built for an irregularly shaped mud room that included open shelves, 93 inch tall cabinets, wall cabinet above a floor unit with a laminate countertop. The floor unit has two drawers. Another area includes a slat wall to hang brooms and other items, a laminated bench seat, an open shelf for hats/gloves and coat hooks. Check out the before and after pictures!

We contacted Closets by Design to come give us an estimate to reorganize our Master Bedroom closet and put in solid shelving & hanging areas. The sales rep (Stacy Lodico) was punctual and listened to what we wanted to do. She prepared a layout and gave us an estimate on the spot. We were able to call and schedule the installation time that worked for us. The installer was on time and did the work in a day and a half (which was exactly what was projected). While the price exceeded are initial budget, we are VERY happy with the results and know that it will add value to our home when we go to sell it one day.
Description of Work: Shelving, hanging areas, and drawers were installed in our master closet.

I had a great experience with Closets by Design from Sunbury, Ohio. Having an empty nest after raising my five sons, I converted one of our bedrooms into a craft room. Organization became a problem to the point that I could barely walk through the room. I looked into designing shelves on my own and decided that it was an overwhelming task. Upon seeing the advertisement in the Angie?s List magazine, I made an appointment with Closets by Design. Within a few days, their designer Chandra came to the house and worked with me. Chandra listened to my ideas and took my budget into account. She drew up a plan for a wall unit where I can access the materials that I frequently use. I can see everything and no longer have to scrounge to find things. Chandra also converted my closet into a great storage area for materials or projects used less frequently. Closets by Design constructed my shelves at their facility and came to my home to install them the next week. The quick turn-around was amazing. The installer was very efficient and had the wall unit and the closet done in two hours. I love my new room!
Description of Work: Closets by Design helped redesign my craft room. They installed a wall unit in which I store the materials that I frequently use. Everything is easily accessible. I no longer have to spend time digging as I can see where things are located. They also designed the closet where I can store items or projects that are used less frequently. They made the cubes large enough for me to store the bags that I travel with when I go scrapbooking. I just pick them up and go, and when I return, they do not clutter the room.

Thank you for taking the time to report on your experience with, Closets by Design last March. As the new owner of Closets by Design since November 1st 2011, I am encouraged that your overall experience with the previous owner was good. Even though an overall, “B” rating is respectable, it is my goal to achieve, “A+” from each and every customer by exceeding expectations in every category. Chris Marth

Company did a good job overall. Office closet job went smoothly. They mismeasured for the walk in closet and were off by 8 inches, so the installer had to cut some of the pieces down to fit. This created a mess and a small delay, but the mess was cleaned up and the company offered to provide a couple small additional pieces for our inconvenience. I think they handled this well. Their installer, although he did what appears to be a very good job, made no attempts whatsoever to let us know he hates his job. Nonetheless, we would use them again.

Having had a negative experience with a designer and subsequent installation by this company, we were very upset. The new owner contacted us, saying that he could tell by the plans that what we had been sold was wrong. He and the supervisor assessed the work, tore out the whole project, and redid our walk in closet and laundry room with no additional charges. Both areas are now as beautiful and well done as the rest of our new home. Thank you Chris and Kevin!
Description of Work: We have small entryway laundry room coming in from the garage. It fits a sink, a washer , and a dryer. We needed shelving/cupboards above the service area. Our walk-in closet is rather narrow, so we needed the space organized with shelves and hanging bars to maximize the space.

Our designer, Nancy, was wonderful and really made sure we had everything exactly the way we wanted it. For instance, we wanted a larger desk surface in the second office. She suggested a 26 inch top because it was the same cost as the 24 inch, but would give us a little extra space. She did the same for the oversized paper cabinet - she gave us the largest size cabinet we could get without having to add an extra door (which would raise the price). She took quite a bit of time measuring and remeasuring everything, making sure our components, computers, monitors, supplies, etc. would fit with room to spare. We also changed our minds a few times (including dropping and then adding the keyboard tray), and every time, she reworked that part of the contract and got it changed for us, with a smile. Everyone in the company made us feel like VIPs in the process. We were extremely impressed with the installations. During the first installation, there was a nick in the L part of the desk. Closets By Design didn't hesitate to take care of it for us, and created a completely new piece. They also fixed two baseboards for us, again without any hesitation. And when they realized that the first office desk needed more support, they added metal legs. We didn't really love the look though, so they switched them out for wooden braces that look fantastic - again, without any fuss at all. On the second install, we were second guessing our original decision to have the top shelves 18 inches from the desk top. We asked if there was any way they could raise it to 20 inches - even though we realized it was completely our mistake and didn't expect them to do it. Chris called the office, pulled some strings somehow, and they ended up cutting us a new piece so they could raise that shelf! That was very impressive, and very much appreciated. We also noticed that with our oversized file cabinet, the file folder runners were very wobbly, and the folders were falling off the runners. Chris didn't hesitate to cut two wood planks for the middle of the cabinet to support those runners. It works so well now! We were very impressed with his attention to detail and the amout of extras he gave us. We absolutely love our new offices! I have so much more storage space, desk surface and leg room now, and it's so comfortable and pretty now that my friends actually prefer hanging out in my office when they come over. It was a terrific process, and as we've told Nancy, we're already planning the next design - probably the garage.
Description of Work: We work from home and had two home offices installed in our home by Closets By Design. The first included a large (13ft x 6 ft) L shaped (with middle seat) desk top, one base charging cabinet (with no backing, so the wires run through to the wall - a very cool feature!), one large double file cabinet, six sets of drawers, six top cabinets and some open shelves. It also included base and crown molding, and all drawers had a decorative raised panel finish (including arches on the top cabinet doors). The second office included a large (12ft) oversized desk top, three standard base and one oversized base cabinet (also with raised panel finishes), and box shelves above the desk. We couldn't be happier with the offices! The cost was a little more than we originally anticipated spending, but we feel it was definitely worth the money. And initially, we worried about the quality of an office that was created by a closet designer - but we did not need to be concerned at all. The product quality is terrific - the shelves are thick, the cabinet doors and drawers are solid and close easily, the edges match nicely, everything is level. The laminate counters have a rounded edge that looks almost like granite, and the Chocolate Pear finish is just beautiful.

They were excellent. We had a friend who had them do some things for them. We asked them to come in because we are new in our area and we have a new apartment. We had a young lady who designed the space. About two weeks ago they came in and installed the whole thing. There was nothing left in our apartment that would indicate that we had had anything done, in other words, they left it very clean. I thought they did an exceptional job.

They came out and performed the work. Four boards were cut wrong, three of them were too long and one was too short. I called them and they said they would have someone out in a couple of days. I called them after two weeks of no one showing and spoke with a rep named Daisy. She apologized and said she didn't even know the closet had been completed. She said she would have someone call me to set up a date to fix the situation. Two more weeks past by with no calls and without anyone showing up. I called them back again and got a rep named Teresa and once again she apologized and said she wasn't aware it was not finished and said she would have someone sent out to fix the issue. Two or three more days went by and I didn't heard from anyone. I eventually called my credit card company and stopped payment. Within about 5 days of that, I received a call from them. At that point I asked to speak with a manager due to all of the unconvince. I explained that I should compensated for all of the problems. The manager cut me off and said he would send someone to fix it and that's it. He got very smart with me so I eventually hung up. He called back and when I asked them to just come out to remove the closet and he said that I could do it myself. I told him I would and hung up again. He then called me and said if I did, he would see me in court. I hung after this threat. Eventually someone came out last Tuesday and explained that the boards were not even necessary and they were only cosmetic. I explained that I still wanted them since it was part of the design. He then revealed to me that he was sent out with the incorrect boards again. He used his saw to cut down three of long the boards but explained he was unable to fix the short board. He went to his truck and found a board that he said would work. I eventually looked in the closet when the work was done and the board was a completely different color than all the ones. Now, I am asking them for compensation for all the trouble.

We contacted closets by design when we were making selections for our new home build. Stacey the sales person was really nice if not a little over eager. We were building our dream home which is 6 bedrooms and wanted to give them a trial run at 2 rooms and if all went well use them for the other 5 closets. My frustration came when I was asked for an install date in the design center which was 2 months out. I selected a date based on where we were in the build process but asked Stacey to stay in touch with our contractor since anyone who has ever built a home knows you can run into delays. She said she would and I figured that Closets by Design deals with new home builds all the time so it shouldn't be an issue. 2 months goes by and I get a call that our install will occur in the next 24 hours. Minor problem since our hardwood floors weren't completely installed let alone stained. I called CBD back and explained the issue and was told that because I failed to notify them within 48 hours that I would be charged a 15% reschedule fee. 15% of $7500 is almost a $1200 fee. I was blown away. If this had been our screw up I could understand. I went around and around with the owner Brian. I asked that they just drop the closets off, which we paid in full for, and we would have someone else install them. He refused stating that you needed to be trained in how to install their product. So they pretty much held our closets hostage so that we could either pay the fee or fore go our entire order. Then Brian proposed that if we went ahead and bought the 5 other closets from them they would waive the fee. We refused and ask our home builder to step in. I don't know if our builder paid the fee on our behalf or worked out some other deal but I know that we finally got our closets installed. I was less than thrilled to then find that most of our accessories - valet rod, belt rack, tie rack, etc had been forgotten and we had to call the company back out. We still have a shelf missing in our master closet but I refused to call them a third time. We contacted another company to bid for our other 5 closets and were then shocked to get a bid that was 25% of what CBD charged us for 2 areas. The icing on the cake was when Stacey called us a month later to ask if we were interested in proceeding with an island in our master closet.

Response from Closets By Design
Dear Angie’s List Member: While the member would like to make Closets by Design look like the bad guy, the facts in this case are not in dispute: 1. We have a contract (a very short contract) that explicitly states that there is a 30% penalty if a client calls to postpone an installation on the day of installation and a 15% penalty if it is less than 48 hours. The client signed this contract on 4/23/10 and we gave her an installation date. The reason for the penalty is that Closets by Design can not fill a last minute install due to the customization process. Just as in a late postponement penalty of a doctor’s office visit or late cancellation penalty for a hotel room, this space can not be filled and it is lost revenue for the company. We have a signed contract from the member verifying this. Had she given us the 48 hour notice we would have had time to put another client in her time slot and this would not have been an issue. 2. This client’s original installation date was Tuesday, July 13, 2010. We called to remind her on the morning of the 12th. We received a call from the member in the afternoon of the 12th saying the floor was not ready and that she did not want the unit installed. We informed her of the 15% charge and told her we would make it 10%, at which time she grew very upset. She told us the builder was supposed to have contacted us 2 weeks prior to the installation date. As it was the member that signed the contract, it was the member’s responsibility to inform us of the postponement, not the builder. 3. The member’s solution was for us to drop the wood off at her house and she would have it installed. We refused because due to good customer service, we wanted to ensure that our installers, who have the expertise to install our systems, would be the ones to install it. Also, if someone else installed it, this would nullify the warranty. Why would we want a product out there that has our name on it, that was not installed by us and therefore guaranteed by us? To say that we “held her closets hostage” is absurd. When the member originally refused to pay the fee that she agreed to, we put the installation on hold. Secondly, she makes it sound like she waited a long period of time before we installed them--we installed the closets less than 3 weeks after the original installation date..when her floors were done! Also, EVEN THOUGH THE MEMBER AGREED TO THE FEE, Closets by Design waived the fee in the end. 4. The member said that she was very upset with us and that she had several other rooms to be done and that she would not do them because of our “poor customer service” (ie giving her a later installation date without the late fee). My solution to her was if she bought additional product that I would waive the fee. Suddenly the prospect of doing more business, as she threatened to take away, was no longer an option. 5. Regarding price, Closets by Design is the premier product in the industry. We have a true lifetime warranty and have been around for 30 years. Our quality and service have been written about whether on this website, the BBB (which we have an A+ rating with) and the Consumers Choice Award. While our prices are certainly 10% to 20% higher, we believe you get what you pay for. To say that our competition was 25% of the prices for our product NOT FOR THE SAME SPACES is ludicrous. We installed a large master closet and a pantry. The design and options for the additional spaces are completely different and therefore not comparable with the spaces that we actually designed and installed. The member gives a “D” for price in comparing rooms, designs and options that are not the same. The member gives a “C” for quality and yet sites no examples of quality or craftsmanship issues. The member gives a “D” for responsiveness even though the company bent over backwards to accommodate her new timeline, without charging her a late cancellation fee, which she agreed to. The fact that we squeezed her in the future schedule at our own cost to accommodate her needs, which was her floor being completed by the builder. The member gives a “C” for punctuality when it was not Closets by Design who changed the date of the original installation. The member gives an “F” for Professionalism when all we did was promise a date and try to hold the client to it. Then, we squeezed her into a new date when we were already booked and did not charge her a late fee. When were we unprofessional? Never in 10 years of owning this business has Closets by Design bent over backwards for a client, only to be rewarded with “D’s” and “F’s”. This product was installed 1 year ago and it is now that the client is writing this review. I welcome any further questions and for all potential clients to read the following reports where Closets by Design has received many “A’s” across the board, as well as our reports on the BBB, where we have an A+ rating. Call us out for a free in-home estimate and let us prove to you the type of quality we provide!

I called Closets by Design to come help me fix/finish a mudroom California Closets messed up on a few years ago. They were wonderful on the phone and sent out Lisa Parker within a few days. She was fantastic!! She was very helpful with ideas, very knowledgeable, very perfessional, and just a pleasure to work with. Although I was unable to go ahead with the installation at this time, (due to the total price it would cost to get it finished they way I want it) I will be saving up the money to have Lisa & Closets by Design insall it at a future time.

This company offers a great service. We have also had them do our master bedroom closet. Their pricing is good, and they take the time to show you all of their products and help you determine the best layout for the space you have. Both projects we have done with them the representative pointed out things we should consider to make the space more usable, and they were exactly right. Everything we have has held up very well. We can't wait to do more of our spaces with their products!

They turned a third bedroom into a walk in closet for us. The installer, Dustin, was awesome. He was incredibly helpful. He knows exactly what hes doing. He takes the time to talk to you and is a very hard worker. He was able to help improve the design that was professionally done.
Description of Work: They put a new closet system for us.

When we bought our house - which was a spec house, there was one small coat closet right off the garage, and two very large closets in the kitchen - one was supposed to be a pantry, and the other pantry/kitchen storage. The problem was that the company used the wire shelving, and just a couple of shelves - not the nice "Container Store" type shelving, but the kind where you can't hang add'l wire shelves. The space wasn't at all efficient. I had Closets By Design come out and do a quote. Tammi, the woman who wrote our quote was really nice, and willing to work with us to scale up or back. I don't like pushy sales people, so she was a good person for me to work with. Plus she gave us an add'l $100 off if we plan another space in the near future. Of course I could use them in all of our rooms, just can't afford it! If we ever did a spec home again, what I'd do, is have Closets by Design come out initially, instead of having the cheaper "organizers" installed initially. I didn't know we could use "our" choice of products in our home until I switched out a mirror I found instead of the one they had in the home. It saved us over $200! The cost of the closets was a lot more than I'd anticipated, but the closets look great, and are much more useable. We could've scaled back, or gone barebones and shaved off a bit of the price, but we spent a bit more and got a space we're all really happy with.
Description of Work: Had two large closets in the kitchen turned into more useable space. One is a pantry, and the other is closet/storage space. These are not normal sized closets - the smaller of the two spaces is 62" wide, and we went 96" high with the shelving. Using the top shelf allows for 108" of storage space. In addition to general kitchen storage, it has cubbies for each of the kids school gear, plus hanging space for their coat, hat's, etc... The 2nd space is 108" wide x 96'' high, again, using the top shelf, we have 108" of storage space. The shelving comes around a corner for an add'l 24" of shelving space, plus there's a "slat wall" which allows for an add'l 2x3 ft section of hanging space. This is the closet with the can holders and wine racks which we're using as a pantry.

Everything was fine and top of the line. I am very pleased except for one thing. When they came in November to do the master closet and bathroom. The cabinet doors were not the ones we wanted. We called them a few days later to let them know we would like other doors. We did not received it until January 8th. Other than that I am very pleased with the work.
Description of Work: They put shelving in our master bedroom. In the guest room the made a cedar closet. In both bathrooms we added a cabinet. In the family room we had a desk unit put in with cabinets.
