It was a tricky work that in the hands of a lesser electrician could've meant extensive wall repair. Tom is talented enough to be "minimally invasive," By the way, when the work took longer to complete than expected, Tom stuck to his original quote.
Description of Work: Tom and his partner made a porch light operable again after another electrician made it inoperable. It involved some very tricky wall-fishing and making as few holes as possible in my plaster walls in order to essentially completely re-run wire to the fixture. The also installed a new porch fixture.

The overall project went great. No complaints, everything was done to perfection.
Description of Work: My family is relocating to Pittsburgh and during the relocation inspection a large list of issues was found. An electric pannel needed to be replaced, breakers needed to be exchanged, outlets and switches needed to be fixed. A total of 18 items needed to be completed. Tom was able to come the next day and finish all with his crew. He made an extra effort to complete this week so that the relocation could continue on time. He was great to work with and I would highly recommend him to anyone in the future.

Couldn't have gone better had we planned it. On July 16, 2009 our power went out at 6:20 p.m. When we reported the complete failure to CEI, they told us we were the only ones reporting in our area and that someone would be out by 9:00 p.m. At 9:30 p.m. he came, diagnosed the problem and cause, and told us that the main breaker to the house had failed and that Federal Pacifica, the manufacturer, had been sued out of business because of components that caused house fires. We called Jarus Electric at 9:45 p.m. and described the work to be done. He arrived at 9:00 a.m. the next morning and left at around 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. The job was of course complicated because our house was built in 1945, and the breaker box size no longer existed. The size was significant because it was wedged into a small area next to the panel for our gas generator. He spent a couple hours searching for a box that would fit and found none, so he had to chip away the brick and remove and then relocate the generator panel to accommodate the larger box for the breaker components. He worked all day and got us back on power without having to stop our generator, which ran for about 22 hr keeping our frig and freezer going. We were very thankful that he fit us into his schedule and that he worked so hard to do a superb job. We have medical equipment that requires power, and we did not know how long we could run the generator or how long the neighbors could tolerate it. Our daughter and son-in-law are Angie's list members and employed Tom Jarus to install their gas generator and to do other electrical work. They praised him highly, so he was the first person we thought of. We certainly were glad that he came.
Description of Work: Replace main electric breaker to the house; move generator panel and reinstall it to make room for the new breaker

Tom and his assistant do an excellent job. I've not met anyone who can install electrical outlets and switches in plaster with minimal damage to the surrounding wall. Tom was very willing to work with me and do the wiring in accordance with my overall plan. Tom's only requirement is that work done comply with the electrical code, which is also my requirement. He made several suggestions to improve the project throughout the process. Because of the complexity of the job, Tom quoted it on a time and material basis. I was able to work with him (when possible) to keep time charges reasonable.
Description of Work: I have an old house (built in 1918) and contacted several electricians to rewire parts of the house. I have an overall plan for rewiring the entire house. Tom worked with me to rewire the third floor and parts of the second floor. This involved replacing a breaker panel, adding switches and outlets in old plaster, adding / replacing light fixutres running cables through crawl spaces and many places which are not easily accessible. I requested new circuits be split on breakers in a specific manner.

Tom is the BEST!!! I've had so many bad experiences with people taking advantage of me because my husband isn't home at the moment. Handymen come in and rip me off even though they say they've done their "Homework". But Tom is completely upfront and honest. He is the consumate professional and really knows his stuff. He explained everything he was doing and let me watch and learn and even let me help!!! It was such a pleasure to have him here and I completely trusted him in my home. He even shoveled some snow!!! I would hire him again in a heartbeat because I know that I can count on him. I highly reccomend Tom and am proud to call him my electrician :)
Description of Work: upgraded 100 amp electrical service entrance including: properly sized new circuit breakers, bonding at the panel, ground wire to water line, 8' ground rod, and a bonding jumper to the incoming conduit. Also cleaned up and organized all wires in the crawl space, fixed the phone jack in my office and installed a new phone jack in my bedroom.

Since I am handy and Tom was working alone, he let me be his helper, which reduced the labor cost. This is my third positive report, I think, because I always use Tom. He is dependable, safety conscious, more knowledgable about his trade than the average electrician, and does very neat work thus minimizing unsightly wires. I always hire him on an hourly basis and can depend on him to work conscientiously.

Tom was on time, professional, thorough, friendly, and respective of our property. Additionally, he noticed that we were using 220 volt bulbs, which was 2 volts less than our 222 volt output, he recommended that we buy 130 volt light bulbs. This will prevent light bulbs from burning out at faster rate. That value-added recommendation was much appreciated.
Description of Work: Problem 1: The breaker switch for the circut that powers our microwave and gas stove has "flipped" about 8 times in the past two weeks while the appliances are not in use. Solution: Tom did thorough analysis of the breaker box, circuits in the kitchen area, and the outlet into which the microwave is plugged. Looks like it could be a problem with the electrical wiring in either of the older appliances or with the wiring within the circuit, so alternative outlets are being used to see if the associated breaker switches "flip". Based on the results in the next week, we will further analyze the situation and take the appropriate course action (more indepth investigation of wiring of circuit or get new appliances). Problem 2: The lighting in our unfinished side of the basement stopped working (light fixtures are strung together in a line). Soution: Ballast on light in the beginning of the string of lights was bad. Light will be replaced.

We were exceptionally pleased with the electrical work Tom and Carl did for us. They are very professional, knowledgeable, hardworking, dependable and honest. Tom s initial estimate and final billing were very detailed, leaving no guesswork as to the many services rendered and costs involved. Our power needed to be turned off while the outdoor meter box was replaced, and Tom worked well with CEI in getting our power restored in a timely manner. This was important to us because we run a small home business. We added many tasks to our initial job request, and Tom and Carl gladly took them on. They have a can-do attitude to anything you throw at them. We heartily recommend Jarus Electric. Thanks again for your excellent work.
Description of Work: The primary work Tom and his partner Carl did was replacing the old outside meter box with a 400-amp meter socket (including obtaining permits and paying utility fees), replacing three Federal Pacific panels, replacing a conduit properly in the main panel, adding two house surge protectors, adding grounding rods, grounding the water line and putting in a new outdoor outlets. They also got the outdoor lamppost operating again, added siding mount blocks, worked on several receptacles, pull chain fixtures, and switches and will be installing a new light fixture when it arrives. To boot, they came across a hidden live wire that was never hooked up!

My husband called Jarus Electric in the morning and made arrangements to meet Mr. Jarus at our home at approximately 5:00 pm. They called when they were on their way, showed up on time, completed the work, quickly, efficiently, and honestly. We needed a new breaker but he didn't happen to have that part in his truck. He placed a used breaker switch on the box and notified us that he reduced the cost since it wasn't brand new and that if we ended up needing a new one, he would come back at no charge to us and only charge us $4 for the new breaker. He also gave us a discount as Angie's List Customers.
Description of Work: Our power kept going off in one area of the house; we thought the circuit breaker might be faulty.

Very professional in every respect; a thoughtful tradesman. He is, as others have written, a very nice man. What impressed me was that he is very thoughtful, and I mean in a professional manner. He knew every hole in the wall (that must be made) was damaging my house and considered every option to not only place holes appropriately for his work, but more importantly, to place them so the drywall patches had the best chance of looking seamless upon repair. As a homeowner with limited drywall repair skills, every hole in the wall was a concern, and as a thoughtful professional he understood that. In fact, he surprisingly filled the holes (with the removed drywall, securing it appropriately) and all I needed to do was mud and sand over the filled holes. I did not expect that level of finish from them. Tom Jarus and Carl covered up my floors from my exterior doorway to the area they worked. It was unexpected and totally appreciated. In addition, Tom communicated with me during the process, to show me where the holes would go, when the power would be turned off, pertinent and informative communications. Cleaned up the work area daily. Another detail, which would be missed by most, and was not something I would demand, was that he put every screw in the switch and outlet plates (covers), so the screw slot was perfectly positioned upright (which is something I personally do, but never would expect or demand that from a professional). This level of detail and care shows his personal high level of workmanship. In fact, Tom Jarus works by a high standard of professional and personal morals. He exceeded my expectations.
Description of Work: I hired Tom Jarus to fix three things that a previous electrician (hired by a contractor during a room addition) did inconsistently with the electrical schematic. Three bathroom lights were not on the proper (planned) light switch and this same subcontracted electrician simply refused to install the planned 3-way switched outlet in an adjacent bedroom. In addition, the bathroom electrical fixes required holes to be punched into the new drywall. Tom Jarus fixed all problems left by the previous electrician.

Tom did a great job start to finish and I thought the price was very reasonable. I called him in the morning and he promptly returned my call. He came by the same day to evaluate the job and determined that he could do it the same day. He considered various options for threading the cable and found the one that was least obtrusive. It is totally concealed. He drilled the requisite hole in my brick wall in such a way that it could be reversed one day if needed, but he also on his own initiative installed a wall plate so that the end result is very clean. He tested the cable before leaving and cleaned up after himself.
Description of Work: I needed a new cable outlet for television installed in a difficult location. There is a fairly complex wiring system throughout the house for cable television, Internet access, and stereo. The new cable needed to be correctly linked to this system in the basement, then pulled upstairs and made accessible either through a brick wall or a slate floor. It was important to me that the hole be drilled through mortar rather than through the brick or slate and that the end result was not unattractive.

I had hired this company previously with great results (I even submitted a report after my first experience in which I was very pleased with their results). Mike was the rep. that came out this time to do the work. He made several errors which concerned me greatly. I called the company which sent out another person; Tom to help with completion. Tom did the remaining work with another rep. They would only work for a couple hours at a time. The entire project that could have easily been completed in a week, took an entire month. The charges skyrocketed for this second round of work. I was charged an hourly rate which I wad required to pay each time they came out. The very last time they came and was prompted to pay, I advised them that I would pay when the work was completed because the job was taking so long. There were several mistakes that were made, and I was unpleased with the a quality of work this time around. I did not have the company complete the job. I chose another company to complete the remaining work.
Description of Work: They came out to complete installation of some grounded electric outlets.

THANK YOU FOR PUTTING US ON THE PAGE OF HAPPINESS ON JANUARY 5, 2006. FUNNY THAT YOU SHOULD MAKE A COMPLAINT ABOUT MIKE...YOU NEVER MADE ANY TYPE OF COMPLAINT ABOUT HIS WORK BEFORE. THERE WAS NEVER ANY OF OUR WORK THAT NEEDED "FIXING" WHEN WE WENT TO YOUR HOME. WHEN WE CAME TO YOUR HOME, WE JUST CONTINUED WHERE WE LEFT OFF, AND WORKED AT YOUR DIRECTION. BASED UPON THIS REPORT, I FEEL IT NECESSARY TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT. WE DID WORK FOR YOU ON AN INCREMENTAL BASIS AT YOUR REQUEST AND DIRECTION. YOU WERE BILLED AS FREQUENTLY AS NECESSARY AFTER OUR REVIEW OF THE NUMEROUS LIENS ON YOUR PROPERTY, PLUS THE FACT THAT YOU MADE NO SECRET OF THE NUMBER OF CONTRACTORS, ELECTRICAL AND OTHERWISE, THAT YOU REFUSED TO PAY IN THE PAST. ADDITIONALLY YOU HAD SEVERAL OTHER JOBS STARTED BY OTHER CONTRACTORS AND ABANDONED, AND YOU WERE ABLE TO GIVE ME PARTS YOU "HAD ON HAND" TO CONTINUE THE JOB...AND YOU DON'T DRIVE! PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW YOU CARRY WIRE AND CONDUIT ON A BUS? THIS IS THE WAY YOU DO BUSINESS AND A RED FLAG FOR ANY CONTRACTOR! THE WORK YOU ARE REFERRING TO IS FOR 2 DAYS LABOR, PLUS PARTS, THE DATES BEING MARCH 29 AND 30, 2007 (2 DAYS, NOT A MONTH)...OVER A YEAR AG0!!!! THE BALANCE IS $1628.44 PLUS $400 FOR PARTS AND TOOLS OF MINE YOU STOLE BY REFUSING TO ANSWER YOUR PHONE AND/OR DOOR, NOT TO MENTION CERTIFIED MAIL. YOU FORCED ME TO FILE A MECHANIC'S LIEN ON MAY 21, 2007 AND A POLICE REPORT FOR STOLEN PROPERTY. I HAVE RECORDS ON MY PHONE FOR SCORES OF CALLS I MADE TO YOUR RESIDENCE...WITH THE CALLER ID THAT YOU HAVE...AND YOU SET YOUR PHONE TO ANSWER AND IMMEDIATELY HANG UP AFTER I TRIED MANY TIMES TO CALL YOU. THE LAST TIME I TALKED TO YOU I TOLD YOU THAT I WOULD FINISH WHAT YOU WANTED DONE, BUT I NEEDED PAYMENT FOR THIS WORK FIRST, AND YOU HUNG UP ON ME. WE ARE THE 6TH LIEN ON YOUR PROPERTY AND WE ARE GOING TO FORECLOSE UPON OUR LIEN. PAY ME THE MONEY YOU OWE ME OR FACE FORECLOSURE OF YOUR HOME.

We live in a historical home (1920's) in need of an electrical upgrade prior to insulation. We hired Jarus Electric after interviewing and getting estimates from 4 vendors. They seemed the most knowledgeable, willing and up to the challenge. With the exception of a few scheduling conflicts, they were always prompt and diligent, making headway on a daily basis in spite of hurdles: Late arrival of antique-style hardware I ordered on line, conflict with electrical company over placement of new equipment, my need to have electricity for my oxygen, getting around in a "densely packed" environment, and last, but not least, taking extra care around our old and infirm dog. Two employees did most of the work with daily supervision of the contractor, who could be reached and on-site within minutes of a phone call. The contractor worked with us to find ways to keep costs down and handled all permitting and inspections personally. Would we hire Tom and his team again? Absolutely!
Description of Work: Performed an electrical upgrade of our historical home (1920's) with enclosed walls from attic to basement, both interior and exterior, including wiring, light fixtures, light switches, electrical boxes, fan boxes, exterior lighting mounts and outlets.

Job 1: Tom Jarus did a great job. Our first estimate from another company was more than double what we paid Jarus Electric because they wanted to dig up the line. Tom came up with a much more simple solution and fixed the problem at a lower cost to us. Very friendly man and the work took less time than we anticipated. Job 2: This is the second time we have used Jarus Electric in the last several months. We are very happy with the company and will work only with Tom Jarus for all of our electrical needs in the future. While we are sure the larger companies do quality work as well, we were always talking to a different person when getting estimates and the cost was higher. Working with Tom is a pleasure. He does quality work, is more reasonably priced, very courteous with clean up, and always on time. We highly recommend hiring Jarus Electric. Using this company has been our most positive experience working with a contractor since we have owned our house.
Description of Work: Job 1: Fixed out outside electrical box that was not level and being pulled towards the ground. This was because the main electrical line to the house had too much tension on it from the ground settling and the line itself was being cut into.($600.)
