Description of Work: Furnace repairs, duct work, system maintenance. Owner spent a lot of time with me on the phone explaining what would be done, and provided quotes on all work in advance. I am guessing I might have been able to get some of it done cheaper, but quality was excellent. Work crew was prompt and very professional. Only knock would be that a corroded or loose wire was not discovered and we were without heat for a weekend until they returned to fix it.

I had them come out to take a look at my furnace that needed repair. I chose to call them because they are certified dealer of Rheem furnace, which is what I have. They said that the heat exchange was cracked and that the furnace would need to be replaced. I asked about possible repair and was advised that the part was no longer available. I was quoted $2,932 to replace the furnace. I later found out from another company that the parts were in fact still available, so I chose you go with another company that was able to do the repair. I had called Starners back to let them know that the particular part of the furnace was under lifetime warranty and they were unaware of that. They checked into it and found that it was a warranted part. He called back and apologized profusely.

WHEN THIS CUSTOMER CALLED SHE ASKED FOR AN ESTIMATE TO REPLACE THE FURNACE. WE DO NOT GIVE FREE ESTIMATES FOR REPAIR SO I DID NOT GIVE HER A PRICE TO REPAIR AND SHE DID NOT ASK FOR ONE. WE ARE NOT THE ONES THAT TOLD HER THAT SHE HAD A CRACKED HEAT EXCHANGER. WHEN SHE CALLED, SHE TOLD US THAT HER HEAT EXCHANGER WAS CRACKED. THE SYSTEM IS ABOUT 20 YEARS OLD; I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND REPAIRING A SYSTEM THAT OLD. I FEEL THAT IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY. SHE CALLED A WEEK LATER ABOUT REPLACING THE HEAT EXCHANGER AND OUR SUPPLIER HAS BEEN UNABLE TO GET THAT HEAT EXCHANGER FOR YEARS. WE ARE SORRY THAT SHE WAS NOT PLEASED BUT WE DID WHAT WE FELT WAS IN HER BEST INTEREST TO BEST FIX HER PROBLEM.

Very thorough. Larry noticed that our heat exchanger was rusty and recommended we buy some carbon monoxide detectors to be safe. I called and spoke to Mr. Starner about the exchanger and he recommended that we replace the furnace (which is 20 years old) and was very helpful with some estimates.
Description of Work: Serviced our furnace for winter, included vacuuming out the burner compartment and changing our thermocoupler.

After the installation, on two occasions, I telephoned Mr. Starner, Jr., pertaining to two questions. One had to do with water which I saw coming out of the air conditioning compressor unit. He didn't seem particularly enthusiastic about answering my questions. In any event, the parts were guaranteed for five years (after the 1 year labor and parts warranty expired). Nearly three years after the installation, the air conditioning condenser unit failed, and had to be replaced. I explained to the technician that the part was under warranty. I was informed by Starner's that I would only be charged their normal labor rate (which at the time was $72/hour). When the technician finished installing the condenser part, he had the gall to request $250 as labor for the latter installation. The charge for less than one hour's work was outrageous, and I refused to pay that amount. Hence, I sent a check for $72 to Starner's, for the technician's labor. However, Mr. Starner, Sr. called pertaining to that matter. I didn't want to have a confrontation with him, so I turned the matter over to my attorney. Mr. Starner, Sr. agreed to accept the $72, but he stated that in the future, he wouldn't honor any further provisions of the warranty. I never again used Starner's after that incident. Several years later, I had some minor problems with the furnace unit, and with the air conditioning unit. Most recently, the electronic circuitry board of the furnace had to be replaced, resulting in a large expenditure. It should be noted that in 22 years of owning my prior furnace and air conditioning unit, outside of having the furnace motor replaced, I never had any of the above problems. The maintenance problems of the furnace and air conditioner, illustrated that although I saved money upfront with the purchase and installation, the savings were eaten up with repairs down the road. Last, I was never informed that the thermostat which Starner's was installing would be battery operated. I had a lot of problems with that unit, as the batteries did not last that long, and the batteries were difficult to replace. Finally, I had another technician install a hard wired electronic thermostat, which was of a higher quality than the battery operated one which Starner's installed.
Description of Work: Starner's came in at the lowest price for a Rheem High Efficiency Furnace and Air Conditioning Unit (Condenser, Compressor), a new 50 gallon hot water tank, an Aprilaire Humidifier, and a new thermostat. Starner's even gave me a credit for an unused furnace motor (still in the box), which I had with my old furnace. I thought that Mr. Starner, Jr. patiently explained everything to us, and answered our questions prior to the installation. Unfortunately, the installation crew came late on the first date (about 45 minutes), and the installation seemed to take longer than promised. They came on a Monday, and were not finished until Wednesday morning. Also, the installation foreman seemed to resent my checking the progress of their installation, and seemed annoyed when I asked him about the new circuit breaker switch for the new furnace, which was promised.

I called them the Friday before the basement floor was in, which they were waiting for. By Wednesday the unit was installed. Once the plumbers are done with their portion of the job, they will complete the HVAC installation. They have been excellent!

The technician name was Greg. It had been a couple of years since our last inspection. He found that we had not been keeping up with cleaning the filters on a regular basis. He explained why this was so important. He checked the furnace and installed a new thermostat and thoroughly cleaned out the air conditioning unit outside.
