I am having a gas fireplace insert installed and decided to have an outlet in my firebox instead of a cord on the outside. I needed the outlet installed ASAP. I called Jim on a Thursday;he returned my call about 8:30 PM that night when he got home. He came out Friday at 5:30 PM to inspect what needed done. He fit me in his schedule for the following Thursday. He and a helper showed up at the set time. The fireplace is on an outside wall. He ran the conduit through the ash pit area, through a dirt crawl space area and a cinder block wall, then connected the wiring to a lightly used outlet box. The chimney had some "mortar" that had come lose around the damper and Jim replaced that. They were here about 6 hours. I have hired Jim for previous projects and would hire him again.
Description of Work: Installed an outlet in my fireplace to plug in a gas fireplace insert and sealed an opening between the damper and chimney.

To our amazement the doors and frames are more perfect than the day we bought our home 22 years ago. It wasn't an easy task and one we thought was impossible. Jim and his helper Doug spent approx 12 hours, most of which was on the front door -- there was no extra charge for their long hours. It is just wonderful to have our front doors work again and most of all to keep the original doors, which would have cost a fortune to replace. Both Jim and Doug were on time, courteous and hard diligent workers. I will have Jim and doug do all the remodeling and repairs we need. There is absolutely no need to look further.
Description of Work: First of all, Jim was here to give us an estimate on remodeling our master bathroom, which won't be started until a later date. However, we had other jobs to do, including our front french doors and a door to the garage from the laundry room. We haven't used the front door for years thinking we would have to replace the two steel doors with beautiful stain glass inserts. The frame was so out of alignment from settling etc. that you couldn't open the doors. Jim said he would like to give it a try.

He was really friendly and helpful. He was easy to get along with. The only problems I have with his work are that the electrical outlets in the bathroom, the switches work, but the prong ones are not working. Also, he had to get through the utility room and moved my washer and dryer but when he put them back they are out of balance, so they now rock. Overall I would still call him back for some small jobs if needed.

He was very knowledgeable, and I was very pleased. He alerted with other potential problems, and he kept at them until they were rectified. He wasn't satisfied until I was satisfied. I would never hesitate to call him.
Description of Work: He identified where there was water intrusion that had rotted parts of walls. He corrected flashing around the chimney. He was able to chase down a leak that had stained the family room ceiling.

I would highly recommend hiring Jim - he is one of a kind. Jim really becomes part of our family when he is working in our house. He is always friendly, interested, and in addition to discussing his work we've exchanged recipes, travel, and personal experiences. This was the second project we hired Jim for, and knew we would get quality work. We had hired Jim before to remodel our bathroom, and trust him very much. Jim is extremely professional. He consulted with us every step of the way, and let us do work where appropriate to save on costs. He even spent a couple of days working with my brother and father-in-law. The outcome of the project was great - our attic looks completely different, and now makes a comfortable place for visiting guests. Jim prioritized the work and worked long hours to ensure everything would be just right before our out-of-town guests arrived.
Description of Work: Jim created a bathroom in our attic around the chimney wall and opened the space between the two parts of the attic for a guest suite. The work included: Ceiling- creating a ceiling door to the space above the attic for leak checking (we had a small leak when we started the project). Construction - Created dry wall for the bathroom, including framing for door, working with existing wall and chimney location Breaking the wall between the two parts of the attic and installing framing for a door. Jim also built wooden enclosures around the plumbing going to the attic. Plumbing - Jim designed a way to connect plumbing from the attic to the basement, going through two floors. He did all the cutting and hired a plumber to make sure the design was feasible and make the connection between the floor. Jim connected the plumbing in the bathroom to a toilet and a sink. Installation - Jim installed two doors, one for the bathroom and one for connecting the two parts of the attic. He also installed an in-wall heater and small hot water tank. He worked with my father-in -law who is an electrician to connect the light switches & wiring. He installed a vanity, a mirror, toilet, light panel, switches, Jim sanded and painted with Kilz all the spaces he worked on.

Jim, did an excellent job for us in framing and drywalling the banister of our attic. This will make our attic a safer area for our young girls who we plan on relocating there for their bedroom. The quality of work exceeded our expectations and the price was more than fair for the amount of work Jim did. We would definately recommend JMAC services to anyone and we would definately consdier using JMAC again if we get any further work done on our home.

Generally, the experience went very well. Jim was very professional, and very personable. Even though this was a small job, he gave it a great deal of attention. Due to a misunderstanding (primarily our fault, not Jim's) , the custom cabinet was not an exact fit. This caused additional work on Jim's part to get the cabinet cut down and additional fitting time to make the cabinet align with the existing work. When we finally get around to selecting a floor, we will have Jim back to install it. I would work with Jim again for any job that required remodeling or carpentry work.
Description of Work: Jim consulted with us about adding additional cabinet space to our kitchen, using a dead space, and having a custom cabinet made. He then helped to to source the cabinet and arranged for an estimate for a granite countertop. He installed the cabinet and adjusted the remaining trim to disguise that a new cabinet had been added.

Excellent. Jim came to the house for to give estimate based on our schedule. there was some delay in returning calls, but it was Christmas season & he told us he was finishing several other jobs. After we contrated him, he continued to accommodate our schedule. Even though it was 2 days before Christmas, Jim worked until after 9 at night to get the bathroom done before my out of town guests arrived on Christmas Eve. Jim advised us on new products & his recommendations. He directed us to bathroom stores & told us where to get the best prices. We are very, very satisfied with his professional, helpful and top notch skills. We plan on having JMAC return in the spring to remodel our upstairs bath. I received execellent service which was surprising in that we just found his name on Angie's List & didn't know anybody who he had done work for who could recommend him. We were pleasantly surprised! Jim's got a easy personality & doesn't make me nervous to have a stranger in my home. 5 stars!

We were renovating a 20 x 30 family room including a 4x4 bathroom. We called Jim because we had a great experience before. He was on vacation according to his phone message, so we waited, and he soon returned our call. He came out, looked over the job, and gave us an estimate on the spot. The estimate ($750-$800) was about what we expected for the job. He arrived on time the first day and worked late, with hardly a break for lunch. Jim worked a half day the second day, and then he sanded a full day to finish. He did a great job, made some very helpful suggestions about our renovations, and kept things as tidy and dust-free as possible. We were very pleased. We settled the bill with Jim at the price he estimated.
Description of Work: Jim took a room with freshly hung drywall and made it ready for paint and wallpaper. The job included mudding, taping, sanding, and finishing on walls, corners, ceiling, and around outlets, windows, doors.

The old heater was leaking and Jim was able to work us in on short notice. After discussing what product we wanted, he purchased and delivered the new unit. The old heater was quickly disconnected and the new one and a new shutoff valve installed. He also disposed of the old heater. We have used his services before and this was another quality job from JMAC.

Very well.....as the problem became apparent, more work was needed than additionally thought, but it was thoroughly explained and provided a solution to the problem.....not just a temporary coverup of the sypmtoms(such as mold begging to show on interior walls)..
Description of Work: Parts of interior walls has to be torn out, old insulation removed, rotted studs and other wood replaced, outside siding removed to get to parts of interior walls needing replacement, waterproofing shield put up and J-channel molding placed on exterior edges of chimney where water had been seeping in for years leading to the rotted studs and molded dry wall portions, and remounting shelving in walk-in closet adjacent to walls needing repair due to sagging under the weight of objects we had stored there.

Called Jim and left a message;he called back and we set a time to stop by and give me an estimate. He suggested a store to look for quality molding. I do not have a truck so Jim agreed to pick it up and deliver it to me. I primed and painted the wood. He was here at time and date we set with a helper. They worked about 4.5 hours. He led me step by step in picking out floor tile, shower enclosure, wall tile, sinks, lighting fixtures, etc. Even when I couldn't decide on the right color/pattern for the countertops (I'm a guy, I do guy stuff), Jim brought his wife along to help me. She was great. As far as the quality of the work went, all I can say is incredible. This is why I go to Angie's list. I would recommend Jmac unconditionally. He has pics of before and after. You wouldn't believe!!!
Description of Work: I hired Jim to do a complete remodel of an 18 year old master bathroom. He tore out the old shower, the floor (vinyl), the sink tops, the sinks, 2 huge ugly mirrors that went across 2 walls, removed the toilet. Then he installed a new shower base, new 12X12 tiles in the shower, new toilet, new sinks, new sink hardware, new countertops, new floor tile, towel bars, new light fixtures, new mirrors over the 2 sinks, and one over the cosmetic desk. He preped and painted all the walls left bare by the removal of the large mirrors. After it was all done, he cleaned everything and left the new bathroom immaculate.

His work was great and professionally done. However, he dragged out the work and I thought that he was very expensive because it took so much longer. He talked a lot to other contractors that we had working, which also slowed the process down. Based on this interaction, we decided to not use him for the bathroom remodel.

Response from JMAC Home Services
Customer was selling their house and had a bundle of unfinished jobs that they had started and not completed through the years. I contracted doing the work at an hourly rate plus material. Customer did have some material that I could, and did use. Snowstorm and 1-1/2 ft. of snow in driveway also made job a little harder going back and forth to van. I worked very steady fixing "owners weekend warrior" C minus repairs. Everything came out nice for what I had to work with. Apparently, the homeowner thought I should have gone faster, but I was dealing with a lot of little time consuming stuff that someone else had left undone. Always a pain and hard to put an exact time on. That is why time and material is most fair to both parties. I did talk some time with another Angie's list painting contractor who was at the job, but that was during my unpaid lunch time. I'm glad I did talk to the painting contractor because I learned something about his quality of work and will use and refer him in the future. I guess you can never be fast enough when people are paying by the hour.

Jim was prompt and professional from the first estimate appointment through project completion. He kept us informed in a timely manner through via phone and email. He provided information and suggestions on where to shop for materials. After we picked out the products we wanted, he did the actual ordering and delivered them to our home. Jim is a craftsman, hard working, and personable. I would not hesitate to use his services again.
Description of Work: Installed a new bathroom shower stall. The old stall had been completely removed before this project began. He replaced/repaired studs and joists, rerouted water supply lines, modified the heating duct, installed new subfloor and drywalled. The company supplying the cultured marble shower did the install of the base and walls. Jim finished by installing a new drain, shower fixtures, ceiling light, and glass shower door.
