Not happy with results, still can't use fireplace and out 99 dollars
Description of Work: I was looking to have chimney swept and possible masonry work done so I thought his was the best deal. They came out to do sweep but it was stage three creosote(totally believable) and recommended 750 service to clean. Fine, but I received no chimney sweep for my one hundred dollars and it does not apply to the 750 service. So 99 dollars down the drain, typical these days with bait and switch.

Thank you for your business and your review. I have reviewed your file as well as our before and after photos of your chimney. They show we did complete the sweep, and they also show you have text book 3rd stage glazed creosote build up. If you did not receive these photos, please let us know. I sent those photos to Mr Walz at jimwalz@fuse.net. Before the 3rd stage glazed creosote can be cleaned from the walls, a basic sweep must be performed to remove any loose creosote, therefore your money was not wasted as you claim. Only after the basic sweep is performed, can the 2 day process using chemicals be applied to remove the glazed creosote. We take pictures of everything we do to avoid these accusations. We will never recommend something that is not needed. The integrity of my company has always been of utmost importance to me and the accusation of a "bait and switch" personally offends me. We highly value our Angie's List customers and strongly emphasize to our technicians the importance of accuracy and customer service. After my investigation I must completely disagree with your review. Insurance companies hold me legally liable for your chimney once my company inspects it. We will always tell you exactly what you need for your families safety, and our liability. I have reviewed my technicians photos of your job, and I agree with his findings. Our recommendation is you should not use this chimney until corrective action is taken to resolve the safety concerns. I must stress again that your money was not wasted. Not only did we perform the sweep & inspection, but you have also been made aware of a safety concern which can save the lives of the people you love. I stress to my technicians to be as thorough as possible with these chimney inspections, because it can save lives and protects my company from any liability. I hope this explanation and the pictures shed some light on your claims, and that you choose to revise this review. I have called all your numbers on file to discuss this matter with you but to no avail. Please call me at our office, 513-360-0778, and I will be happy to address any other questions or concerns you may have. Again, thank you for your business. Arco came out to the house on several occasions to complete a full chimney inspection and did a chimney sweep and cleared a clog due to collapsed bricks. My experience with Arco was fantastic. I have been thru 5 companies trying to get a chimney leak repaired. It was becoming a comedy of contractor errors. The results we got from the previous contractors were: paid one contractor for repair but work was done incorrectly and still leaked, another called me minutes before our appointment to say he didn't want the work because the house is too tall, another came and inspected but never called back with a quote, another wanted to seal lower bricks but wasnt equipped to fix the chimney leak from the roof, yet another missed 3 separate appointments. This was a mix of the big corporation roofing/chimney companies and the small time chimney repair guys. Arco was by far the most professional. They showed up every time, on time. Their communication with the client is far better than any other contractor that we've worked with. They were thorough with the inspection which was complicated by a caved in brick liner. Since I didnt give them a green light to do any work at any cost they stopped and discussed what they were finding along the way and gave me options and recommendations. They discussed ways I could save money yet still accomplish the goal of having a functional vent for the furnace and prevent future leaks. I found them to be very upfront and honest. They put it the hard work to find the root of my chimney issues where other companies had just walked away. I was pleasantly surprised by their reasonable prices. In addition to the chimney sweep and clean out i have scheduled them to do the more intensive repairs and waterproofing. I will certainly call Arco first from now on for all of my roof and chimney needs.

The sweep went fine. They tried to up-sell additional work. Pipe boots were split and leaking. I declined because of the price. They also stated that my chimney crown was cracked and leaking. I declined this repair because the cracks were hairline thin and I did not agree that they needed a four hundred dollar repair. Attempts to up-sell don't bother me because I have no problem saying no. Since a $99 sweep cannot be profitable for the company, you can expect them to look for other opportunities to make their visit worthwhile. I would just be sure that it is something that you really want to have fixed.

Hello Mr [removed member info], Thank You for your business, & thank You for your review, I would first like to start by saying our Technicians are Certified through the Chimney Safety Institute of America, & have many on the job hours of training. Unfortunately, the Chimney Industry is one where we Contractor's walk a fine line. We are legally liable for your Chimney, should something happen & we did not point it out to you. What I mean is, our Certified Technicians have to point out every single thing that is wrong with your Chimney. We do that not only with our thorough Written Inspection Reports, but we also document any damage our Technicians see through very clear photos, That way, when they say you need to fix X________ they have photos to back it up as well. If you choose not to have the repairs complete & burn anyway, we get your signature saying you declined services & all is well. However, if we do not let you know you need X______, & you have a fire, we are legally liable for any damages that occur. So yes, we have absolutely trained our technicians to point out anything they see a Fireplace or Chimney needs, not only for your safety & the safety of your family, but for our safety as well. Something that is deemed as a small crack, can let a lot of water in, further damaging the inside & outside of your Chimney causing even bigger problems, & a more costly repair bill. As for our pricing being too high, we have found the latter to be true. We have found that our pricing is right in line with the competitive fields in both Roofing & Chimneys. As for the Chimney Sweep we performed, a quick Customer Satisfaction Report with our owner Patrick stated that you were very happy with the Chimney Sweep we performed. I am sorry you felt we did not perform up to your expectations, & we deserved a overall "C" grade, however, I feel Arco Remodeling did our best, & we performed our work to the exact specs of your Angie's List Purchase. Thank You, Stephanie Archer, Arco Remodeling

So far, it's okay. I had one issues and one thing I'm just not sure of. The issues I had is when cleaning out their stuff, they did it on my front lawn that killed a patch of the grass about 2 feet in diameter which I am not particularly happy about. Overall, the work seem to be good. I still has a question, I needed to find out from them about the replacement for the chimney cap. They dropped one and then they replaced it for the temporary. I'm not sure if they put the original style back in or not. Overall, they were a good crew and friendly crew. After the inspection they showed me the photograph. They've actually been out here a couple of times. The original inspection went fine. There was some additional work that they did and then they came back and when they did the re-aligning of the inside of a chimney. They re-did some of the masonry at the top and that was an additional $3300. This is all documented. I was present when they were bringing the camera back down so I can see it real time. They assessed what needed to be done to bring it up to code. It seemed to me that the crew was very nice and polite. They took the job seriously.
Description of Work: They came out and they did an inspection first. They recommended some additional work to be done so I had them do that. They noticed that the flu tiling only went partial up there. According to them, that was not up to the current code. There were sections of the chimney where they are cracks and breaks running all the way up the top of it. The chimney cap was missing. I used to have one but it went missing. There were some smoke damage. They filled in some of the cracks in the mortar in the fireplace.

My son and I own half of my mother's house and so the ceiling was coming in because of the problems with the chimney. I had my husband look up ARCO on Angie's List and when I called and explained that the ceiling was coming in, they slotted us within two or three days. They were incredibly kind and helpful people. It was a fraction of the cost. It was 25% of what the original bid was. The chimney works. They were great.

Overall the cleaning went well. It didn't take long to schedule the work and the technician was very polite and courteous. He laid a drop cloth on my carpet in front of the hearth and was careful with the vacuum and brush equipment when doing the job. The one thing that left me scratching my head was that he didn't lay a drop cloth on the hearth over the bricks directly in front of the fire box. As a result, soot got into the bricks and left black marks, that to this day I still ahven't been able to remove despite vacuuming several times. The marks are not blatently noticeable, but they're there. This could have been avoided had a drop cloth been placed on the hearth too.

They provided me with a new set of fireplace logs to replace the ones that were completely wore out. ?I had been told by many other companies who do fireplaces, that I would need to replace my whole fire[place as the logs were not available for my fireplace, which is a direct vent, natural gas, fireplace. ?Obviously those providers were more interested in me paying a hug amount for a new fireplace!

Chimney was swept clean. We purchased a Big Deal for chimney sweep and credit towards masonry repair...boy would we have needed that "credit" if we had them perform the repair. Estimated over $2K of damage and proposed repairs to chimney. Photos seemed unconvincing to me so we sought second and third opinions. Both other reputable, chimney/masonry only companies proposed lesser repairs and did not see any major problems with chimney or masonry. We were told by Arco "do NOT use your chimney until you get it fixed, it is a huge fire hazard!"

I would like to first reply to [Member Name Removed] by thanking him for his business & his review. However, there seem to be a few discrepancies in his statement. Our bid was not over $2,000 as he had stated. It actually came in at $1,548. That was for a Large Crown Seal, Tuck Pointing of the entire exterior of the Chimney Chase, as well as performing a Smoke Tite to the inside of the Smoke Box due to the voids that were found, which, as it stands right now, are a rather large fire hazard to you, your home, & your family. Our technicians are legally obligated to relay to you any damages & repairs that they deem necessary to bring your fireplace up to local code & state regulated order. I apologize you took our technicians suggestions in a negative way, however, we obviously want our customers in a safe environment, & as of right now, your fireplace is not up to code, nor in safe, operable order which presets you & your family with a major fire hazard, which is why our technician advised you against using it until the repairs are completed. Obviously, you do not have to go with us to do the repairs, but they do need to be completed. The estimate of $1,548 we provided to you is well within line of the standards of the professional Chimney Industry. Our technicians are CSIA Certified, HAAG Certified, & they do hold Certificates from the Heat Shield Company as well as many others. We believe wholeheartedly when starting any home improvement project you should always seek out three or more reputable, certified companies to provide you with estimates. That being said, when comparing pricing & estimates, always make sure the companies are using all similar products, & nothing was left out. In our experience, we have found that sadly, many other companies will use the cheapest, most improper materials for the job. We only purchase from highly reputable companies in the Chimney Industry. Ask the Technician where they purchase their products. If they reply with Home Depot, or Lowe's, please beware. All of our Chimney products come from places like Copperfield, Heat Shield, Smoke Tite, etc. Sadly, many of these other "cheaper companies" will simply use regular caulking for a "cheap fix", which unfortunately leaves you with having to deal with this problem in a year or so, maybe less. In these instances, more times than not, we have been the reputable company to be called back out to fix the issues you have been left with. It seems by your review you were satisfied with our cleaning, however, as I said before, I apologize you did not agree with our technicians professional opinion of your fireplace. Our photos seem to show your fireplace was indeed in need of these repairs. If you should have any other questions or concerns or have any questions regarding the products we use versus others, please feel free to call into our office, at 513-360-0778. Thank You, Stephanie Archer, Arco Remodeling

We have 2 fireplaces that had not been serviced since we bought the house in 2009. We call ARCO to have our chimneys swept and inspected in the spring of 2014. They came within days to do the sweep and inspection. I can't fault them on the initial responsiveness and work. They swept and put some material in the leaking chimney. They also found that both crowns were rotting to the point they were crumbling off the top and one chimney had leaks in the chimney bricks. We pointed to our neighbor's crown and said that's what we want. Their crown looks very nice and must have a coating put onto of the mortar/concrete crown. ARCO schedule to return within the week to do the crown as it couldn't rain for a day after install. They came back, built some forms of 2x4s, poured the concrete and left. There were white chalked streaks down our chimney and we asked to get those cleaned up too. The ARCO person said they would wash off by themselves over time once the caps were replaced and leakage of the rotting concrete stopped. Then it took many calls and about 2-3 months before they came back to remove the forms. They were hard to get a hold of and we didn't think much of it as other than looking like hillbillys with 2x4s on our chimneys it was spring and we weren't using the fireplaces anyway. They then came back when we weren't home and removed the forms. I didn't think much of it other than the stains down the side of the chimney were there. A couple of months passed and I looked at the chimney one day and realized the streaks weren't gone. Then I started really looking at the quality of work on the crown. Each crown was a different thickness, had paper or something that was part of the 2x4 stuck in it, there was concrete stuck to the bricks below the crown, and the mortar/concrete itself had bubbles and bad edges. We also noticed they had painted the trim caulking around the chimneys white when the rest of our trim is a reddish brick color. It made me pull out the ladder and climb onto the roof to really look at the quality. I didn't call ARCO after that as what are they going to do? It's my fault for not demanding a specification for the work like "my crown will look like my neighbor's crown" and "don't use white paint on our caulking". The crown seems to work but it's really ugly and frankly I could have climbed on the roof, made a hillbilly 2x4 frame, and poured my own concrete. I went to youtube to see how professionals fix chimney crown and the really good ones, including many other companies in Cincinnati, use an adjustable metal frame. I have no idea in general if ARCO does other things well but I would not recommend them to anybody to replace crowns. I can't tell if they did a good chimney sweep or did a good repair in our chimney but I have no reason to suspect the quality of that work. I am only writing this report on their chimney crown work as it bothers me every time I look up and see the incredibly low quality of work sitting on the top of my chimneys that will be there forever now. Luckily, I've never had anyone comment on our chimneys as people, other than us, ever look at them.

(removed member name), I apologize for your job being overlooked for so long. The project manager assigned to your job is no longer with us. This is not typical of my company and we strive to do better. Currently I have three people in the office answering phones and scheduling jobs, (513)360-0778. As to the wood forms versus metal; I have several sets of metal forms in the warehouse but from my experience I still prefer wood framing and I train the new guys with wood except for the larger chimney chase runs where metal is the only way to go. It does cost me a little more money having to purchase new wood with each customer but the quality, when poured correctly, comes out much better. There seems to also be less problems with wood during form removal stage vs the metal as well. That being said, I would love for you to give me the opportunity to come out and inspect the job my former technician did. From there we can discuss a solution to your frustration. Please call the office if you are interested and Steve, Stephanie, or Linda will schedule us to meet. I look forward to meeting with you. Best Regards, Patrick Archer

It went very well. The technician was very professional and thorough. The site was left clean as a pin. Some maintenance recommendations were made and put in writing with a quote.
Description of Work: Cleaned and inspected my fireplace chimney, firebox, chimney cap and flu covers.

Said we needed an insert. Being retired, and on a limited income, our only option was "Not to Use the Fireplace"
Description of Work: Checked fireplace and chimney. Determined a crack and the danger of using the fireplace.

They came by and inspected my home's exterior, and left a paper on my front porch without a quote (to repair siding and roof damage) - the note said they would be getting back to me next week with a quote. Anyway, long story short, no one ever got back to me, I called the company three times, explaining that we needed a quote before moving forward and each time they told me a rep would call me back. No one did. Crazy! They were completely indifferent, so I went with another company.
Description of Work: Inspected exterior home, replaced a downspout, but did not leave a quote or plan of action.

Response from ARCO - Affordable Roofing & Chimney Options
I would like to first apologize to [member's name removed] for any inconvenience we may have caused him. He purchased the Exterior Home Inspection Deal we had ran on Angie's List & we scheduled him for Tuesday, April 14th, 2015 with an arrival time between 3pm & 4pm. He had stated he had a downspout blow off his home & we re-attached it as part of the Deal he had purchased. He also mentioned he had some siding blow off his home & he needed an estimate to repair it. I show in our thorough notes in our system we had sent an email to [member's name removed] containing that estimate to the email we have on file; [member's email removed] I also personally left [member's name removed] a voice mail the same day of the appointment when the technician arrived, informing him we could not complete the Roof Inspection part of the deal, because he had a Tile Roof & we did not want to break any of his tiles walking on them. Again, I do apologize for Mr Brookbank feeling we did not live up to his expectations of service & quality, however, our notes show just the opposite, that we were in contact with him, we performed our work to the exact specs of the Deal he purchased, & we kept him fully informed while doing so. Thank You, Stephanie Archer, Arco Remodeling
