I hired Deck Rescue to strip and stain my 625 square foot deck. There was a problem with getting all the old stain off. They made several attempts and tried different stain removers. They were able to strip most of it but not all of it. The old stain showed through after the new stain was applied. The owner of the company came out himself and completed it to our satisfaction. He also reimbursed us $50 for our troubles. We were very pleased how he handled the whole situation.

I spent around $400 to $500. They cleaned the deck and repainted it. They did the standard water cleaning and then they painted. They are okay. We didn't use the kind of paint they were supposing to use. We found it to be a fair deal of substituting our more expensive paint. They changed the color we wanted. It looks fine. We thought that the price was fair.

Went great, the cedar deck looks much better than before. Previous attempts at staining left drips and streaks. I thought about replacing the cedar boards with Trex. Evan used a solid color stain and it turned out wonderful. I actually like the deck now.

He power washed the deck and applied the stain. I told him that I would send a check for the payment if everything looked okay. After inspecting the deck, there was a portion of the board on the deck floor that was 18 inches to 2 feet that didn't have any stain on it at all. He applied a product to the top of the boards that were up against the house with a paintbrush. You could see where the product wasn't applied, as well as drip marks between the boards. The boards that he applied product with the paintbrush were lighter than where he used the paint sprayer, so it didn't blend. On the stairs where the boards met the ground, he only coated halfway down the boards. There were areas on the steps where the seams met that had no stain applied. Several areas had only received a light coating. I also have decorative bricks around my flower beds that are gray and red, some of those bricks were completely covered with the product and are now brown. I emailed him, and in the process of communicating back and forth, he stated that he would come back out and take care of those issues and re-coat the entire deck, free of charge. In my conversations about applying stain between the boards with a paintbrush, he advised me that it was virtually impossible. He then responded that he would try, but wouldn't be able to get to the bottoms of the boards. On Aug. 21 when he came to fix the deck, I also noticed that in three different spots on the front of my deck, the product ran down the boards because too much product was applied. No attempts were made to smooth down those areas or wipe away the excess product. He said that he would blend those drips with the rest of the boards. I observed him using a paintbrush to blend the product so that the boards looked even. He did this to the handrails along the top of the deck. As he was leaving, I gave him a check for $250.00 as partial payment. I told him that I would send the rest if everything was taken care of the way that he said it would be. When he left, he advised that the deck would dry within the hour. On the evening of August 21, it rained, but the water did not bead-up this time. I sent him an email the next morning letting him know that the product he placed on the deck had a matte look to it and was not beading as it previously had. Normally, he would contact me the same day about any issues. When I didn't hear that evening, I called my bank and put a stop payment on my check. The product didn't start repelling water until Monday, August 23. When I inspected the deck at this point, there were boards and spindles that he hadn't touched and other areas that he didn't apply product to. There is a notable difference in the color of the boards. The boards with the drips, still have the drips. The deck is not right and I am not paying full-price until it is completed correctly.
Description of Work: They were suppose to power wash the deck and apply two coats of a semi-transparent sealer/stain.

Response from Deck Rescue LLC
As the Founder and President of Deck Rescue, my record speaks for itself. Unfortunately for member, so does his: He has filed eight reports with Angie's List and four of those contractors received "F" grades. I feel lucky to have escaped with only a "D." Some folks simply cannot be satisfied, even when the owner of the company is personally doing the work for them. As a reputable contractor with a long history of integrity and honesty, I can only hope that homeowners on Angie's List are savvy enough to see the truth in this case. I parted ways with member by giving him a discount for his "troubles" and recommending he find another contractor in the future. I also notified Angie's List of members track record and asked them to investigate why so many ethical contractors are being attacked by him. Our reputations do not deserve to be sullied in such a malicious way. I also forewarned my Angie's List rep that a negative report would soon be coming when member stopped payment on my check without warning, provocation or reason. His claim that I did not reply to his e-mail was only because it was on a SUNDAY when I spend time with my family. Even God rested on Sunday, and I would like to believe that after spending Saturday at member's home (located 1-1/2 hours from my house), I could at least have Sunday to myself. The true reason he stopped payment on his check was due to insufficient funds in his account, which I verified with his bank the next day. This experience taught me to be extremely grateful to all those Angie's List clients who treat us with respect, courtesy and hospitality. I would like to thank each of you now and say that your kindness will never be taken for granted. Thank you.

Initially called for estimate on deck and then called him to come back for an estimate on fence. We have a 4ft high wood fence with 4 inch slats and a 2 inch gap between. It s length is about 400 ft. I have stained it my self previously but the reason we had Deck Rescue do it was convenience. It took them 2 days and it would have taken me 2 weeks. They took the time to cover the areas of the house next to the fence and cover the bushes to avoid over-spray. Keep in mind that paining outside is weather dependent and that the dates he states may change

Dave pressure washed both porches in 1 day. Then there was a week of wet weather when Dave couldn't work. Then there was a string of 3 dry days and Dave sealed both porches on the 3rd day. Dave did a GREAT job !! He even touched up some spots on the white painted railings on the front porch. He also pressure washed my concrete walks and the concrete entrance to my garage. He did a super job !!!!! I WILL call Deck Rescue in the future !!!

Found upon applying stain that prior stain applied was silicon base and was not letting stain to penatrate. For an extra $100, sanded the entire deck, striped and pressure wased. Bill came back several times to check on our satisfaction, and color of the stain we desired. Took longer than expected but deck looks great!

Dave gave me an estimate based on our phone conversation that I felt was very reasonable. He told me approximately when he could start the job which was some weeks away. That was ok with me. When he called later to set a definite date I asked if he could also pressure wash the front and back porches. He agreed to do this for no charge! When he pressure washed the swing he removed 12 broken boards and replaced them (he had to go to the store to buy them). Next year I will have him do the wooden fence around the back yard. He returned my initial call promptly and has a very nice, friendly demeanor. He is prompt, efficient and enthusiastic. Dave Hydock is the kind of businessman that is a pleasure to deal with.

Response from Deck Rescue LLC
In response to her report about my company, it appears to be hastily written and without much thought. Several facts are incorrect, including the following: 1) The date of service is incorrect. 2) The price we charged is incorrect. 3) While we cannot be in the office constantly to answer phone calls, all calls get returned within 24 hours. Most get returned same-day. 4) We do have crews working on Saturdays. It just so happens that they were working on jobs that had booked with us PRIOR to this member. In fairness to all our clients, we perform jobs in the order that they schedule with us. 5) In our 14-year history, it is not uncommon for a job scheduled in early May to be completed in early to mid-June. We cannot control the weather, and 2008 happened to be the rainiest spring in our company's history. 6) Her deck would have been completed sooner, but she did not have working electricity on her deck the day we arrived to complete the job. This is true despite the fact that all clients are instructed to check for working electrical outlets prior to our arrival. Thank you, David Hydock, President Deck Rescue Franchising, LLC

It went well. The weather played havoc, raining every few days in early June, so the work took longer to complete, but I wanted the work to be done right, not done fast, so it was fine with me. Bill Hydock checked the deck first for damage, durability, life expectancy, and structural integrity. The deck sags at one end, which I was concerned about. Bill advised me that the settling had stopped, and that an extra support should have been put in, but that there was no danger of collapse. He gave me a rough cost estimate of what it would take to install an extra post, which I appreciated. He told me what the pressure wash would clean up, and what stain he would use, that would make sure any discolorations in the wood were covered. We then arranged a time for the washing, and staining to be done. He introduced me to his staff. Before each part of the job, he or his staff would call ahead. After the washing, rain delayed the staining, but did not damage the deck, due to Bill's careful timing. His crew was thorough in staining all around the edges, and covered shrubbery and non-deck areas to prevent accidental overspray. Only when he was done, and I was satisfied, did he present the bill to me, which I gladly paid.
Description of Work: Our large deck (1225 sq. ft.) was washed and stained two months ago. They were careful to measure the deck and assess it in order to give an accurate estimate of cost, which they adhered to. They were very careful about doing the job when weather would not adversely affect the results. They were prompt, advised me about some problems, and gave me tips on how to help maintain the deck. They were careful to wash and stain the whole deck (sides, edges, areas not easily visible), and not damage or stain the house. The results looked great then, and still do. Water still beads up like a newly waxed car. I highly recommend Deck Rescue, with Bill Hydock and his staff. Roger Lau

We were happy with Deck Rescue from start to finish. He was able to quote us a price this spring over email after we sent him digital photos of the deck and its measurements. Dave told us he'd try to schedule us in late May; it wound up being the first week of June, due to weather. After they power-washed the deck, we had several days of rain, so the finishing work couldn't be done for several days. Dave stayed in constant communication with us by phone and email to advise us of his plans. He even came out and inspected the deck one day when the weather cleared, but decided it was still too damp to do the staining and finishing work. Eventually, the weather cleared up and they did the final refinishing. We're quite happy with how it looked at the conclusion.
Description of Work: Power-washed and re-finished deck, approximately 15 x 20 feet.
