"This job required laying block to seal off opening in foundation, pouring a long cement sidewalk from back porch down through yard to the garage. One part of the yard needed resloped and required drainage to be installed. True Grit did an excellent job in a timely manner and made sure I was happy with the results every step of the way. Jones Topsoil was incorporated in 1924 under the name Jones Fuel Co. 2015 is our 91st anniversary. We sold residential coal for home furnaces in the Columbus, Ohio area. As natural gas became the fuel of choice in the 1950’s we began hauling topsoil, sand and gravel, and limestone for contractors and homeowners. Although our corporate name is still Jones Fuel Co., we do not sell any fuel. Our topsoil has always been of the highest quality because we normally strip topsoil ahead of gravel operations. Our soil is called “sandy loam” topsoil and usually comes from along Franklin County Rivers and streams. We sell three types of topsoil. SoilPlus, which is a blended topsoil, and can be delivered with our Slinger Jones trucks, is normally used for flower beds and gardens. Pulverized topsoil is our rich topsoil run through a large grinder and made easy to work with and spread. That soil is used to level out lawns and fill areas that need built up with soil. Our regular, un-pulverized topsoil is used to fill deep holes, or when the customer is using a skid loader to spread the topsoil. We also sell and deliver high quality mulch, sand & gravel, and limestone products. "We have used His Workmanship 2 times with completely different experiences. The first could not have gone better! The crew was exceptional—such hard workers! With this in mind we had very high hopes for this recent visit; however, we could not be more disappointed. This crew did not seem to accomplish a whole lot in the 3 hours. Their work was sloppy—they left trimmings all over the porch and bed, and bushes were not cut cleanly (lots of uneven pieces sticking up). They did not even bring any equipment. The most frustrating part however was how things were handled from there. The His Workmanship website states very clearly that ALL email is answered within 24 hours—Eric, the owner, has always been quick to respond in terms of questions about coming out for a job, and yet, when we emailed him (2 times!) asking to discuss this recent less-than-stellar performance he completely ignored us! It’s been 2 weeks and no word whatsoever. This is unacceptable customer service! Sadly, it seems, they only respond when it profits them. If we could have had a simple conversation, the company might have kept our loyalty and business! As it stands we are upset and especially disheartened from this experience—this is NOT a good reflection of HIS workmanship!! We honestly chose this company because they stand apart as an upfront Christian organization. We really love what this is supposed to be based on! The whole premise of the company leads us to believe they have integrity and are a service that stands by its work, is trustworthy, and one that treats its customers fairly. How very disappointing to be treated otherwise. From this experience we would NOT recommend using this company!"

On the inexpensive end, red and black mulch are about $35 to $40 per cubic yard, and are typically made from recycled waste wood like shredded old pallets or deck material. Cedar, cypress, and rubber mulch cost anywhere from $100 to $120 per cubic yard. A pro can help you determine the type of mulch most suitable for your landscaping needs.
Topsoil costs from $12 to $55 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. For example, screened black dirt will cost about $15 per cubic yard. Loam (soil composed of sand, silt, and clay) costs about $17 per cubic yard. Standard screened topsoil costs about $20 per cubic yard. The type of topsoil you need depends on your landscaping plans.
Topsoil should go down first. If the topsoil is next to your house, make sure the grade slopes away from the house to keep water from pooling against your foundation and possibly leaking into your basement or crawl space. Don’t cover your decorative landscape mulch with topsoil as that defeats the purpose of laying down the mulch. If you’re trying to create a certain soil composition to improve plant growth, you’ll likely want compost mixed into the topsoil instead of mulch.
