I DID NOT HIRE JACOB BROS. TO INSTALL A NEW BOILER FOR ME BECAUSE 1. THE BOILER THEY WERE GOING TO INSTALL WAS TOO LARGE(ACCORDING TO 2 OTHER COMPANIES) AND 2., WHICH IS MOST IMPORTANT, THE SALESMAN, AFTER I HAD BEEN TOLD THAT I COULD NOT TURN MY FURNACE ON BECAUSE OF CO LEAKAGE (BY 3 COMPANIES) TOLD ME THAT THE COST FOR THE NEW BOILER WOULD BE $3,000 MORE THAN WHAT HE HAD QUOTED ME IN WRITING. BEFORE I KNEW THAT MY BOILER WAS LEAKING CO I ASKED JACOB BROS. TO GIVE ME A QUOTE ON CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING AND A NEW BOILER. THE WRITTEN QUOTE FOR THE BOILER HAD BEEN AROUND $7800, BUT KIRK WILEY WHEN HE CALLED ME SAID IT WOULD COST $3,000 MORE BECAUSE HE HAD PUT ALL THE LABOR COST INTO THE AIR CONDITIONING QUOTE. HOWEVER, I HAD GOTTEN OTHER QUOTES FROM OTHER COMPANIES WHICH WERE IN THE SAME RANGE AS THE $7800. AND, ACCORDING TO ONE COMPANY, EVEN THOUGH THE BOILER THAT JACOB BROS. WAS GOING TO PUT IN WAS LARGER (UNNECESSARILY), THE BOILER SHOULD STILL NOT COST AS MUCH AS $3,000 MORE.
Description of Work: A BOILER SERVICE MAN INSPECTED MY BOILER AND TOLD ME THAT I COULD NOT TURN MY FURNACE ON BECAUSE IT WAS LEAKING CARBON MONOXIDE AND THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW BOILER. A REP FROM ADCO CAME OUT LATER AND SAID HE COULD RESEAL MY BOILER FOR $200 AND THAT IT WOULD NO LONGER LEAK CO. FURTHERMORE, HE SAID I COULD TURN THE FLAME DOWN AND OPEN A BASEMENT WINDOW AND WOULD NOT BE THREATENED BY CO WHICH WE HAVE DONE AND WE'VE HAD NO PROBLEMS.

JOB 1: JASON ARRIVED CLOSE TO THE TIME AGREED UPON. HE GAVE ME A LOT OF INFORMATION ABOUT MY SYSTEM AND, I THINK, SOME GOOD ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO NEXT. HE DIDN'T DO UNNECESSARY WORK ON MY SYSTEM, WHICH I APPRECIATED. (I DID HAVE A CONCERN: HE MENTIONED THAT THE WATER INSIDE THE UNIT FROM CLEANING IT WOULD BE DRAINED AWAY, BUT THEN WROTE ON THE RECEIPT THAT HE COULDN'T GET RID OF THE WATER BECAUSE THERE WAS "NO ACCESS.") OVERALL, I WAS SATISFIED AND PURCHASED A MAINTENANCE AGREEMENT (PRE-PAID FOR SERVICE ON MY FURNACE AND I'LL GET 15% OFF SERVICE CALLS IN THE NEXT YEAR.) JOB 2: I HAD PREVIOUSLY PURCHASED A ONE-YEAR SERVICE CONTRACT FOR MY A/C AND FURNACE. IT INCLUDED INSPECTION AND CLEANING OF BOTH UNITS. (TWO TOTAL VISITS) THIS VISIT COVERED THE FURNACE. MIKE WAS VERY PLEASANT AND ANSWERED MY QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW THE FURNACE WORKED. HE CHECKED EVERYTHING OUT AND SAID IT WAS IN GOOD SHAPE, WITH NO NEED TO REPLACE THE THERMOCOUPLE (WHICH HAD BEEN REPLACED THE PREVIOUS WINTER.)
Description of Work: JOB 1: JASON CAME OUT TO INSPECT MY CENTRAL AIR SYSTEM. I'VE BEEN TOLD TWICE BY ANOTHER COMPANY (WHICH INSPECTED/FIXED MY SYSTEM AS PART OF MY HOME WARRANTY) THAT IT NEEDED TO HAVE ITS' EVAPORATOR COIL TAKEN OUT AND CLEANED. JASON SAID THE SYSTEM WAS RUNNING FINE. HE INSPECTED THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE PARTS OF THE SYSTEM WITH SOME INSTRUMENTS AND CLEANED THE OUTSIDE PARTS WITH A HOSE AND SOME SOAP. HE RECOMMENDED THAT I HAVE THE CONTACTOR REPLACED AND HAVE AN E-Z TRAP INSTALLED, BUT I DECIDED TO PUT THESE REPAIRS OFF. ($155) JOB 2: COMPLETE CHECK AND CLEANING OF FURNACE. ($0)

JACOB BROS. ARRANGED AN APPOINTMENT WITH US FOR WEDNESDAY AT 5:00 PM. WE RECEIVED A CALL ON WEDNESDAY MORNING THAT THEY DID NOT NEED TO MEET WITH US BECAUSE THEY HAD BEEN BY THE HOUSE TO SEE WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE. WHEN WE SAID THAT THEY HAD NOT BEEN IN THE BASEMENT TO LOOK AT WHAT HAD TO BE DONE THERE, THEY TOLD US THEY DID NOT NEED TO SEE OUR BASEMENT. WHEN THE ESTIMATE ARRIVED BY MAIL, IT WAS $1150!! OTHER ESTIMATES CAME IN AT $450-500. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE WENT WITH ANOTHER COMPANY AND WERE EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH BOTH THE PRICE AND THE WORK.
Description of Work: WE WANTED TO HAVE THE AIR CONDITIONER (ORIGINALLY INSTALLED IN 1998) MOVED FROM THE BACK OF OUR HOUSE TO THE SIDE SO THAT IT WAS OUT OF SIGHT AND CLOSER TO THE FURNACE IN THE BASEMENT. SINCE OUR BASEMENT HAS UNFINISHED CEILINGS AND ALL THE WIRING, FREON LINE, ETC. IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, WE KNEW THAT NO NEW MATERIALS WERE NEEDED TO MOVE THE AIR CONDITIONER TO ITS NEW LOCATION. WE HAD BEEN TOLD BY THE PERSON WHO GAVE US AN ESTIMATE FOR BUILDING THE DECK (HENCE THE NEED TO MOVE THE AC UNIT) TO EXPECT A PRICE OF $400-600. WE ASKED JACOB BROS. TO GIVE US AN ESTIMATE FOR THE WORK.

I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR A BUSINESS ADDRESS. IT WAS AGREED THAT I WOULD MEET THE TECH AT THE LOCATION AT 9AM. ON THE MORNING OF THE APPOINTMENT I ARRIVED AT 8:45. I WAITED TILL 9:10 FOR THE TECH AND THEN CALLED. I WAS TOLD JACOB BROTHERS HAD CALLED (MY HOME) TO CONFIRM THE APPOINTMENT AT 8:35, AND WHEN THEY DID NOT GET AN ANSWER THEY SENT THE TECH HOME. I WAS TOLD THEY WOULD NOT SEND OUT THE TECH SENT HOME BUT COULD GET SOMEONE OUT BY 10:30 OR 11:00. (INITIALLY I WAS OFFERED AN AFTERNOON APPOINTMENT.) I EXPLAINED THAT I HAD TAKEN A HALF DAY VACATION NEEDED TO BE BACK AT WORK BY NOON AND REALLY NEEDED THEM TO DISPATCH THE FIRST TECH AGAIN. THEY REFUSED. MY COMPLAINT IS I WAS NEVER TOLD THEY WERE GOING TO CONFIRM THE APPOINTMENT. IF SO I WOULD HAVE GIVEN THEM A CELL NUMBER TO REACH ME. THE CONFIRMATION SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE SOONER. THEY SENT THE TECH HOME BEFORE MY SCHEDULED TIME. IF I HAD CALLED 10 MINUTES EARLIER I STILL WOULD NOT HAVE RECEIVED SERVICE.

THE A/C WAS COMPLETELY DOWN. I CALLED JACOB BROTHERS WHEN I GOT TO WORK IN THE MORNING. MY MOTHER MET WITH THE TECHNICIAN, BILL CRAIG. HE WAS JUST WONDERFUL. VERY POLITE. HE EXPLAINED EVERYTHING TO MY MOTHER AS HE WENT ALONG, THEN RE-EXPLAINED EVERYTHING TO ME ON THE TELEPHONE. HE GAVE ME SUGGESTIONS AND WAS JUST VERY NICE. IT WAS A REALLY GREAT EXPERIENCE. THE COST WAS MORE THAN REASONABLE, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING IT WAS AUGUST 1ST AND THE AIR WAS AWFUL, AND I HAD SERVICE WITHIN A FEW HOURS.
Description of Work: A/C WAS THROWING THE CIRCUIT BREAKER. BILL CRAIG CHECKED EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE SYSTEM, AND TIGHTENED THINGS IF NEEDED. HE BLEW OUT THE DRAIN, CLEANED THE UNIT INSIDE AND OUT, CLEANED THE COILS. HE WROTE DOWN THE READINGS WHEN APPLICABLE.

VERY HAPPY WITH THEIR WORK. ORIGINAL QUOTE FROM A COMPETITOR WAS $18,000, IN PART BECAUSE THEY RECOMMENDED A 50% INCREASE IN DUCTWORK. JACOB BROTHERS MUCH MORE WILLING TO OFFER OPTIONS ON HOW TO SAVE MONEY AND WHAT WORK COULD BE SKIPPED. THEY DID HAVE A 5 DAY DELAY IN THE JOB DUE TO A DEFECTIVE BLOWER MOTOR, BUT WERE VERY APOLOGETIC AND FINISHED JOB AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. SYSTEM HAS WORKED WELL, EVEN ON THE HOTTEST DAYS.
Description of Work: REPLACED BLOWER AND CONDENSER FOR EXISTING HIGH VELOCITY AIR FLOW A/C SYSTEM (THE SPECIAL TYPE OF SYSTEM FOR OLD HOUSES WITH HOT WATER RADIATORS AND LIMITED DUCTWORK). MADE MINOR, LOW COST CHANGES IN DUCTWORK TO IMPROVE AIR FLOW. AT NO EXTRA CHARGE, MOVED CONDENSER TO FRONT OF HOUSE TO GET NOISE, HEAT AND HARDWARE AWAY FROM FUTURE PATIO AREA.

THE ESTIMATOR WAS EARLY, WAS WAITING WHEN WE ARRIVED HOME FROM WORK. HE ASKED US JUST A FEW QUESTIONS AND SEEMED TECHNICALLY KNOWLEDGEABLE. UNFORTUNATELY, HE WAS MUCH MORE INTERESTED IN WHO ELSE WAS PROVIDING ESTIMATES AND WHAT BRANDS THEY WERE RECOMMENDING. HE WAS MORE INTERESTED IN SIZING UP HIS COMPETITION THAN WORKING WITH US TO FIGURE OUT WHAT SYSTEM WOULD BEST SUIT US. HE CAME ACROSS AS UNPROFESSIONAL IN THAT REGARD. CAME OUT SAME DAY ON JULY 22ND! DIDN'T CHARGE US A MINT FOR THE CALL EITHER. 1 COMPANY WE CALLED(NOT ON THE LIST) WANTED TO CHARGE IN 15 MINUTE INCREMENTS. GREAT GUY SHOWED UP. FOUND THE PROBLEM RIGHT AWAY. CHECKED OUT THE SYSTEM BEFORE HE LEFT. MADE SOME HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS ON EFFICIENCY AND CLEANING. GAVE THE KIDS MAGNETS THAT LOOKED LIKE THEIR TRUCK. EVERYBODY WAS HAPPY. THE CAPACITOR WAS BAD AND THIS IS THE HEART OF THE SYSTEM SO THE PART WAS EXPENSIVE BUT HEY I DIDN'T HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE THING AND HE HAD EVERYTHING WITH HIM ON THE TRUCK. NO WAITING.

THEY CAME OUT QUICKLY. THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND ORDERED THE PART THAT WAS NEEDED. THEY WERE ABLE TO COME BACK TWO DAYS LATER TO INSTALL THE PART. ALL OF THE STAFF WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL. THEY EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM TO ME CLEARLY. THEY ARRIVED WHEN THEY SAID THEY WOULD, AND GAVE A NARROW WINDOW OF TIME, SO I DID NOT NEED TO STAY HOME ALL DAY TO WAIT FOR THEM. I WOULD DEFINITELY USE THEM AGAIN FOR ANY HEATING/AC PROBLEM.

THE OFFICE ASSISTANT CALLED THE DAY BEFORE, TO REMIND ME OF THE APPOINTMENT I HAD MADE. WHEN THE SERVICE PERSON ARRIVED, HE DIDN'T MIND THAT I ''TAGGED ALONG'' TO WATCH AND LEARN A FEW THINGS. HE WAS POLITE AND 'DOWN TO BUSINESS' WITH CHECKING EVERYTHING OUT THOROUGHLY BEFORE HE MADE A FINAL ASSESSMENT AND RECOMMENDATION. I WAS GLAD THAT THERE WASN'T IMMEDIATE PRESSURE TO SELL ME A WHOLE NEW UNIT. HE LAID OUT THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS FOR ME, AND DID NOT EVEN PRESSURE ME ABOUT THOSE CHOICES. HE SPRAYED ENOUGH WATER ON THE GRASS AFTER CLEANING THE UNIT WITH ACID TO TRY TO REDUCE GRASS-KILL. I THINK OVERALL, MY UNIT WAS ASSESSED THOROUGHLY, AND I WAS PLEASED WITH THE PRICE OF THE EVALUATION AND THE POWER ASSIST STARTER KIT PLUS THE CLEANING. HE TOLD ME ABOUT THE ANNUAL CHECK-UP AGREEMENT, BUT AGAIN, NO PRESSURE TO BUY.

I WOULD RECOMMEND JACOB BROS. WITHOUT RESERVATION. THEY DID THOROUGH PLANNING/CONSIDERED DIFFERENT SCENARIOS, AND RECOMMENDED DIFFERENT OPTIONS BASED ON PRICEPOINT. THEIR WORKMEN WERE PUNCTUAL, CLEANED UP AFTER THEMSELVES, AND DID A TERRIFIC JOB.

A LESS REPUTABLE COMPANY WOULD PROBABLY HAVE REPLACED THE A/C (FOR A LOT MORE MONEY). WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO FIT ME INTO AN ALREADY FULL WEEK. EXCELLENT ALL AROUND!

SERVICE MAN WAS NICE, AND WAS ON TIME FOR APPOINTMENT. HE WAS HELPFUL WITH EXPLAINING WHAT WAS WRONG. THE COMPANY CHARGES A TRAVEL/DIAGNOSTIC FEE JUST TO COME TO YOUR HOUSE, THEN THEY CHARGE YOU FOR THE SERVICE. THAT'S A CROCK. I NEED A NEW HEAT PUMP/AIR CONDITIONER, BUT WON'T BE BUYING FROM THEM.

THE TECHNICIAN, BILL, CALLED TO LET ME KNOW THAT HE WAS ON THE WAY AND WOULD BE THERE IN ABOUT 30 MINUTES. HE WAS ON TIME, VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND EXPLAINED EVERYTHING HE WAS CHECKING AND WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE. HE DIDN'T TRY TO PRESSURE ME INTO BUYING ANYTHING AND EVEN TOLD ME THAT MY AIR CONDITIONER DIDN'T NEED REPLACED. HE GAVE ME SEVERAL OPTIONS FOR SOLVING THE PROBLEM. TECH WAS VERY PERSONABLE, SPOKE HIGHLY OF HIS COMPANY AND THEIR COMMITMENT TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. IT'S NICE TO TALK TO SOMEONE WHO IS PROUD OF THE WORK THEY DO AND THE COMPANY THEY WORK FOR, AND IT CERTAINLY TENDS TO INSTILL CONFIDENCE IN THE CONSUMER.
Description of Work: SERVICE CALL DUE TO AIR CONDITIONER FREEZING UP. BILL, THE TECHNICIAN FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO POOR AIR FLOW. THE EVAPORATOR COIL NEEDED TO BE CLEANED, HOWEVER, DUE TO POOR INSTALLATION OF THE SYSTEM BY THE PRIOR HOMEOWNER, THE COIL COULD NOT BE ACCESSED WITHOUT EXTENSIVE WORK, ESTIMATED TO BE AROUND $500.00. SINCE I AM ALSO GOING TO GET AN ESTIMATE TO REPLACE THE FURNACE, HE TOLD ME IT WOULD BE MORE COST EFFECTIVE TO HAVE THE COIL CLEANED DURING THE FURNACE INSTALLATION, AS IT WOULD BE EASILY ACCESSIBLE AT THAT TIME. HE MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE THE ESTIMATOR CALL ME BEFORE HE EVEN LEFT THE HOUSE AND I HEARD FROM HIM WITHIN 20 MINUTES. ALTHOUGH NO REPAIRS WERE DONE AT THIS TIME, BILL WAS ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED BY THIS COMPANY AND WILL UPDATE THIS POSTING AFTER GETTING MY ESTIMATE ON 05/03. SERVICE CALL WAS $79; WITH ANGIE'S LIST COUPON, FINAL CHARGE WAS $54.

I'M STILL AMAZED BY THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF THIS COMPANY. JUST TRIED TO SELL ME A NEW UNIT, IT SEEMS. DON'T HIRE THEM!
Description of Work: LOCKE WAS CALLED IN TO FIX A HEAT PUMP THAT BROKE DOWN. INSPECTOR CAME AND WITHOUT ANY TESTING CONCLUDED THAT THE COMPRESSOR WAS BROKEN AND WE NEEDED A WHOLE NEW UNIT (WAS JUST 5 YRS OLD). WOULD TAKE MANY WEEKS FOR NEW UNIT TO BE INSTALLED, DURING A HOT SUMMER. WHILE WAITING FOR A NEW UNIT, I STARTED TO CHECK IF I COULD GET THE OLD UNIT GOING WITH THE HELP FROM TECHNICAL GUIDES FROM THE INTERNET. FOUND THAT THE ONLY THING BROKEN WAS THE FAN MOTOR. REPLACED IT FOR ABOUT $100, AND THE UNIT FUNCTIONED WELL EVER SINCE.

THIS WAS THE SECOND COMPANY HMS GAVE US TO WORK WITH AFTER OUR HEAT PUMP WENT OUT. THEY ARE NOT THOROUGH AND AFTER REPEATED CALLS, THEY NEVER SENT THE FOLLOW-UP CLAIM TO HMS. THEY CAME OUT LAST AUGUST, AND BROKE A PIECE TO THE EXISTING UNIT. HE SAID IT WAS ALREADY BROKE, LEFT, AND WOULD RETURN. THEY TOLD US WE NEED TO REPLACE THE UNIT. THEY DID REPLACE SOME PARTS, BUT NOT THE WHOLE UNIT. THE CHANGES THEY MADE MEANT THAT THE HEATING UNIT WOULD KICK THE BREAKERS, AND WE HAD TO HAVE PART OF OUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM UPGRADED AT OUR COST. THE UNIT STILL NEEDED MORE WORK. EVENTUALLY WE FOUND OUT IT WAS MIS-WIRED. WHILE THIS WORK WAS GOING ON, IT WAS ALREADY COLD IN OUR AREA. WE WERE STILL GETTING COOL AIR FROM THE UNIT INSTEAD OF HEAT. THEY MADE SOME FOLLOW UP VISITS AND SAID THE HEAT PUMP NEEDS REPLACED. I LOST CONFIDENCE IN THEM, I HAD ANOTHER COMPANY OUT, AND FOUND OTHER ERRORS LIKELY CAUSED BY LOCKE. I'M STILL ENDURING PROBLEMS, BUT WOULD NEVER CONSIDER HAVING LOCKE WORK ON THE UNIT AGAIN. I FEEL THEY DO POOR WORK, HIDE MISTAKES, OVERCHARGE ON EVEN SIMPLE THINGS LIKE PULLING PERMITS, AND COMMUNICATE POORLY AND ARE UNPROFESSIONAL.
