We had a heating issue in our house last fall/winter (2011). We had just moved into the house that summer so it was our first winter. I had called the number on a sticker that was on our furnace for Locke's but ended up talking with the Service Pros as apparently they had bought Locke's some years earlier. I told them of our issue and they were able to send a technician to the house that day, which I admit, was great. The technician called before he arrived and told me to replace the batteries in the thermostat, which I did, but that didn't fix the issue. He then asked me to vacuum my air filter, to which I thought was an odd request. I told him I would do it later and that it wasn't a priority as I had just replaced the filter recently. He began work on the furnace and after about an hour or so identified the problem was some broken component and that it would need to be replaced. He said he didn't have the part with him so he would have to go out and get one. When he returned and installed the new part, everything worked properly again, however when I received the invoice, I was surprised to see the total cost was about $400. Since the work was already complete I more or less had to sign it. I did read it in full and saw the clause stating the tech was supposed to disclose all costs to me before work was complete, which he did not do. I probably should not have signed it, but I did anyway and paid him merely to make the problem just go away. Once he left, I did some internet research on the component he replaced and discovered it was only a $15 part, however on the invoice he charged over $200. My guess is the guy probably just went to Lowe's and picked up the part then came back and installed it. I called back and spoke with Brenda and told her my concern and she connected me to someone's voicemail. I left a message asking for a call back but never received one. So while they technically fixed the issue, the experience was less than satisfactory, and it was a turn-off not to receive any call back from the company. I won't use them again merely for the fact they grossly marked up the cost of the parts.
Description of Work: Replaced heating component.

Overall it was a very unsatisfactory experience. He tested our thermostat, first by replacing the batteries with new ones and when that did not make a difference, he used his testing equipment. The testing equipment indicated that the equipment was bad, so he showed me that and then he replaced the thermostat. The technician did not provide me with any equipment options nor did he tell me what the final cost would be. The thermostat he installed cost $408 which I only learned when he was preparing to leave and provided me with the paperwork to sign. Although that seemed a bit expensive for a simple thermostat I quickly signed the paperwork (albeit without reading what I was signing). Once my husband came home and we discussed the matter I discovered that one of the lines that I had signed said that I was provided with an estimate as to all the costs (which I was not), and then my husband confirmed that $408 was in fact excessive for a simple thermostat. The next day I called the office to discuss this matter and seek some resolution, namely a discount since I now knew that $408 for a thermostat and about an hour of the technician's time was excessive. I spoke with Brenda, who, as in my previous contacts with her, was pleasant and helpful, and I relayed what had happened. I asked for a partial refund, specifically inquiring if the thermostat that was installed in my house was the only one they offered. After she talked to Alex, the finance manager, I was told that was the price. She also told me the technician was just trying the equipment out because that's how they confirm that the problem is with the thermostat. (I found that interesting because the technician told me that the thermostat was bad before he put the new one on; in fact, he had shown me that thermostat was bad by using his test equipment.) Brenda also told me that when I discovered what the new thermostat cost I could have asked the technician to just take it off although the technician did not inform me that was an option when I registered my shock at the cost of the new thermostat. (Please remember that I was supposed to be paying only for the equipment.) Since they would not give us a price break (I still find it hard to believe that the only thermostat available for Service Pros to provide their customers costs $408), I asked if it was okay for my husband to uninstall the thermostat (which I told it was) and for them to come and pick it up. The technician came the next day (March 29) and in the interim my husband bought the same brand big-name brand thermostat from Lowe's. (It cost ~$65.) If that was the end of the story, I would not be writing this review because I can somewhat understand what happened. However, two weeks after the thermostat was picked up by the Service Pros technician my refund for $329 (the difference between the $408 thermostat and the $79 service call fee I owed because I did not keep the equipment) had not been processed. At that time I called to find out what the status of my refund was. Since then (almost two weeks ago) between my husband and me, we have called Service Pros at least six times to inquire about our refund and every time we are told something different. Only yesterday (26 days after the equipment was returned) Brenda informed me that they had not processed my paperwork until last Friday or this Monday (she wasn't sure which) because the technician?s don?t come into the office on a regular basis. It is completely unacceptable that my refund hasn't been processed all this time and that they have told us something different each time we called. Since I have absolutely zero confidence that Service Pros is going to process our refund, yesterday I called my credit card company to dispute the $329 charge. Suffice it to say that I will not be using Service Pros again. By the way during my final call yesterday to Service Pros I informed Brenda that I would be disputing their charge with my credit card company and posting a negative review on Angie's List.
Description of Work: Since we used this company twice in the past year and have had good experiences with them, it was a no-brainer to call them when our heating wasn't working during last month's cold spell. They came out to determine the reason our heat wasn't working and to resolve the problem. The technician discovered that the thermostat was bad and replaced it. There service call was supposed to be free so we would only be paying for the equipment.

Member, Thank you providing the feedback in regards to the service you had from our company but I believe there are a few miscommunications that I would like to clear up. When our technician was at your home diagnosing the problem, it was a situation where he was 90% sure that the problem was with the thermostat but the only true way to tell was to put a new one on your system. I apologize that he did not go over the pricing ahead of time and that is a training issue that we addressed immediately when I found out about it. My understand in the conversion with the technician and what was discussed with you is that he did give you the price afterwards and did offer to remove the thermostat if you did not want it multiple times before leaving your home. As far as the thermostat that was put into your home there are other less expensive models available but you never mentioned that you would like other options, only that you wanted to see if we could reduce the price of the thermostat that was installed. The model that was installed was a “like” model with similar features to your old thermostat. Using a less expensive model would have been a downgrade but we would have been happy to install that model if you would have liked. The pricing of the thermostat may seem more expensive and it is definitely more than putting your own thermostat in from a hardware store. The difference though is in the quality and the installation that comes with it. The thermostats that you purchase at the hardware store are consumer grade and the ones that we provide are professional grade. As evidence of that you stated that the bad thermostat we replaced was one that your husband installed less than a year prior which was from a hardware store. Our thermostat comes with a 5 year parts and 2 years labor warranty as well. You are also paying for the expertise and quality work which we are proud to stand behind. We also have a 100% satisfaction guarantee which is why we agreed to remove the thermostat and we even offered to have our technician come out and take it out. With the refund I have been in contact with your husband and Brenda had talked to you several times and let you know that the credit card company was looking into the delay in the refund. The refund was processed immediately after we received the old thermostat but for some reason there was an issue with the processing company. The processing company did get back to us this week and asked us to rerun the refund with no explanation as to what happened. I apologize if there have been any misunderstandings or miscommunications. Regardless of whether you use our company for future services we still want you to be 100% satisfied. At this time if there is anything else I can provide help with please let me know. Thanks Alex Herrmann Operations Manager

The product is good.. this review does not include the product installed.// It rather is a review on the installation service provided. I was more on the satisfied side until today with the services provided. The technician did not check on the system setup to set the equipment type to heat pump due to which hot air was being blown into.. I was away for the weekend.. but had another technician come in to replace the capacitor. After the change he suggested since its an hourly billing time he would rather check on the HV/AC unit for me.. and then came back stating that its not really in the cool mode even though the thermostat was on. We were both confused and then he checked the outlets.. and I agree since only sunday night even though the unit ran the temperature in the thermostat never went down. We looked through the manual and he figured the problem in a minute (it was an incorrect system setup on page 11 of the installation guide). After the change we allowed the AC to run and sure enough after a few minutes the temperature indoor dropped. I am really disatisfied with the installation service, The technician was absoultely not aware of what he was doing.... they must familiarize themelves with the AprilAire product. I am glad I decided to call another tehnician who was able to handle this promptly even though he was not on this job to check it, I would have to call Service pro again for a re-visit.. but he saved that for all of us.. I will not be using service pro again.. unless any issues with this installed product.

I have a service plan with them and their price is quite reasonable. They are very respectful. They came in with the bootees on their shoes and went all directions in the house. They told me what they were doing and what they would do inside and outside. He asked me if he could use the hose because he was going to wash down some of the air conditioner blades. He is pretty knowledgeable of what he was doing and he made sure that he was going to pass his knowledge on to me so that I can make an informed decision. I would continue to use them in the future.

The tech did a great job. He carefully inspected the system and found the problem. Then he took the time to explain to me what my options were and provided me with a specific time and cost quote for each option. Great experience and would highly recommend this service provider.
Description of Work: My air conditioner stopped putting out cool air. I suspected that it needed a shot of Freon. I was right. The tech found a leak in the coil and advised me that he could re-fill the lost Freon, put in new a new coil assembly or replace the entire A/C system (it is 18 years old). I opted for the cheapest option and just had him replace the missing Freon. Eventually I will have to put in a new coil assembly of course.

He tried to sell me a new furnace and a/c. The special was for a furnace filter replacement as well but he did not honor it. I really feel like he was trying to sell me as much as possible regardless if it was truly needed. He also tried to sell me a maintenance plan. I feel this was ore a sales call than a service call. I ended up calling my dad who did Hvac before he retired several years ago. I had my dad talk with the service man. He also questioned why the serviceman was trying to sell me a new furnace and a/c. I am a single woman and truly feel the serviceman was trying to take advantage of me. I will not use this company again.

I called and they showed up on time. He did the service and ot ended up with a $400 charge (same thing happened when they did the air conditioner service). I called them today since the humidifer was leaking water even though they just serviced it. They would nto give me rates on the phone other than it would cost me $79 for them to come out. so I called another provider who was excellent. They found the humidifier was totally hooked up wrong and was creaeting the problem. They fixed it and it cost $100. I would strongly recommend you do not sign a contract with this comapny or employ them for any work.
Description of Work: They came to do the furnace/humidifier service inspection. The guy told me I needed a part for the furance and it cost $400 to replace. I wasn't convinced but since I am not the expert I went ahead and had him change it. Since I am on contract with them, I didn't want to call in someone else. I spoke with an expert later and he highly doubted this was the case.

After reading your review I took a look at your service history try to understand the entire situation. The first visit you had with our company over the summer your unit was in need of a extensive cleaning which included an acid bath and the unit was sunken/off balance because the pad underneath needed to be replaced. This involved actually removing the unit and placing a new pad underneath it which takes just about the same amount of time to install a new unit. This past visit in the fall it looks like you needed a new igniter on your furnace as well as replacing the humidifier pad which is something that should be changed at least once per year. The igniter is an item that is probably the item that we most often see needing to be replaced. These are the items that once they started showing signs of wear and tear that usually go out unexpectedly and leave you without heat. As for your call about your humidifier leaking, the only thing we did with your humidifier was replace the pad on it. We did not install it for you and therefore we cannot warrant any issue which is why there would have been a charge to repair it. If there are any concerns that you would like to discuss please feel free to give me a call. Thanks Alex Herrmann Operations Manager

This process is superior in every aspect. You should know that both my wife and I are retired professionals. I am a retired attorney aka "curmudgeon. We are extremely careful and detailed oriented. We began this process by soliciting bids from six heating and a/c companies. This company was the most competitive. They respoonded within 24 hours to any questions including warranty detail, blower and a/c questions. Jack was our intiial point of contact. This gentleman is a seasoned professional with a high degree of knowledge. He answered any concerns with specificity. There was none of the usual b.s. and/or "high pressure" rudeness that is prevalent sometimes. After we selected this company, installation was scheduled within the week. The installlers showed up on time. They protected our rugs and wood flooring. They brought all the needed parts and tools with them. They even gracefully worked around our german shepherd. Upon completion which was a two day install, they tested the operation of the unit with us present. They also explained user operation. I went down to the company's office the next day because the installer suggested that I could obtain a user manual for the unit. The company got this for us. We also were able to finalize all paperwork and tax rebate forms. We were helped by Margi who was very nice , but also very thorough and competent. I would HIGHLY recommend this company. They met and exceeded our expectations
Description of Work: This company removed a 20 year old furnace and installed a brand new one. This included: installation of the furnace and accompanying heat pump, removal and disposal of all debris, electrical work, permit process and approval, testing and configuration; warranty and tax paperwork and answering assorted questions.

Everyone was nice and they did try to resolve the problem. After they came for a service call for the AC, they could not find anything wrong and 2 days later my AC went out. I had 4 service calls because the issue was never resolved and each technician would tell me something different. They did some electrical work that was not related to the AC and from talking to other electricians they massively over charged me. I felt taken advantage of and after 4 visits my problem was never resolved. In reply to the company response edited 2/14/2012: They did follow up and they did try to respond. My main issue is that they overcharged me. For example, they charged me $200 for installing a thermostat. Although, they did refund it, my point is that it's an example of how much they overcharge because installing a thermostat takes fifteen minutes. The other example of how they overcharge was that they charged me $400 for grounding an outlet in the bathroom and trying to find a short which they never found. According to my research with other electricians, grounding an electrical outlet and finding a short should be about a $150-$200 charge. In addition, they were also trying to tell me that I needed huge overhauls of my electrical system and duct work that would cost $5,000 to $10,000. Consequently, I had other contractors come in who said that was not needed at all. In addition, I had two of their service providers from Service Pros come and one of them told me that a lot of the work done was unnecessary and that some of the work wasn?t fixed correctly the first time around. One of the parts was not correctly put in and caused more problems. On top of that, I had a feeling that they were trying to take advantage of me as the service worker had asked me when the male in the house was coming home. When they grounded the electrical outlet and tried to find the short or give an estimate to rehaul the circuit breaker, they should not have done this if this was not an area of their expertise.

Member Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I did a little research and spoke with the technicians as well as Kelly, our owner, about your situation. My understanding is that there were several different issues that you were experiencing. The first visit was just a routine maintenance which everything was fine. The second visit was for a no cooling problem which looks like a circuit board was shorted out and the thermostat was hanging on the wall after a relative had tried to install a new one. At that time there was also an issue with a bathroom outlet which isn't our expertise but we were able to fix for you. The last 2 visits to your home were in regards to your system not cooling as well as you were used to. My understanding is that we made some adjustments and had some suggestions about your return duct not being the proper size which was a prior issue. Currently we were in a waiting pattern to see if the low airflow issue was resolved or you wanted to proceed with any other work. If I am mistaken and we have dropped the ball at any point please let me know and we would be happy to continue to work with you on this issue. In regards to your pricing concern over the course of the 4 visits you have only been charged $606 which after you voiced a concern earlier on we even sent you a check for $178. Based on these 4 visits and you only paying a total of $428 I do believe you have been charged a fair price but if there is any concerns about the price please contact me and we can discuss it further. Again, thank you for your business and please feel free to contact me with any concerns you may still have. Thanks Alex Herrmann Operations Manager

The technician did not show and I did not receive a call. I was told that when a service technician "frees up" I will be called! I have no idea when that will be? UPDATE: I felt as though the technician was in my house for the sole purpose of upselling me on repairs and the maintenace program. Since I have no way of knowing what the parameters are for determining the life expectancy of an ignitor or capacitor I am at the mercy and integrity of the technician. Remember, my furnace was working fine so far for this heating season! To be 3.5 hours late with no call. To write an invoice and leave with my check only to return and ask for more money is almost comical. I am not opposed to paying a contractor for his trade expertise but there are bounds of reasonableness. This episode today far exceeded anything that I have experience in my 21 years of owning a home and paying tradesmen to repair and replace items in a typical house. Thank goodness I didn't have him replace the capacitor.....that would have been even more outrageous!!!
Description of Work: I had scheduled an 8:30 appointment for 11/22/11. I was supposed to be the first job of the day. At 10:00 I called to determine when I might expect my technician? I was informed that "I slipped through the cracks." I have no idea when or if my furnace will be serviced today?? I understand that "things" arise but to not receive a phone call is truly unacceptable. There are too many HVAC guys that have courtesy and professionalism to deal with those that don't!!!!! UPDATE: My technician showed up 3 hours and 15 minutes late. He was courteous and well mannered. After about 20 minutes he determined that my furnace needed an ignitor and a capacitor. He looked in his pricing manual and quoted me a price of $211.00 for the ignitor but $179.00 if I joined their $19.99/mo service club. He then quoted me a figure of over $600.00 to have both of the parts replaced and the maintenance package. I balked and advised him that I called just to have my furnace winter cleaning. My furnace has been on for about a month. At his urging, I said to replace the ignitor but I didn't want the capacitor replaced nor the maintenance agreement (why would I want a service contract with a company that shows up 3.5 hours late?). He replaced the ignitor in about 15 minutes (I was present during the entire visit). He wrote me an invoice that indicated .5 hours labor and the cost of the ignitor at $211.00. I wrote the check! After he left I Googled the price of an ignitor for my Bryant furnace. I was shocked. Ten minutes later, the technician returned to my house and knocked on my door to inform me he had misquoted my price and it was actually $243.00. I told him I knew the price of the part (won't disclose in this forum) and find his original price to be outrageous not to mention knocking on my door to ask for the increased amount. I wrote him the check for $243.00 and told him I felt as though I was ripped off. When I include the original $59.00 I paid for the trip to "clean" clean my furnace and the $243.00 for the ignitor, I feel(I know) I overpaid by a considerable amount.

Appointment went well -- after he arrived. I carved out time from 10 until 2 (their service hours), then had to call at 2:10 to ask where he was. The receptionist said she was "just getting ready to call" me and he would be there within 1/2 hour. He arrived at 2:55. That was my only problem with the experience. A call before the end-time of the appointment would have been appreciated.

I purchased the $49 Whole House Plumbing Inspection and more because I was experiencing problems with the toilet in my master bathroom for quite some time. I had previously gone to Lowe's and purchased parts to fix myself but was unable to unscrew piece. I saw this advertised as a Big Deal and thought I would try it out. Afterwards I was extremely dissatisfied so much so that I was almost turned off from using Big Deals again in the future. The inspection was completed, but I felt like the technician was more interested in trying to sell me the service plan than to help me assess and correct the problem that I was having. The technician quoted me a price of $89 for the part, but then indicated that he did not have the part on the truck. The part would have to be ordered and I would have to schedule another time for it to be installed. I was not pleased and did not want to spend another day off work trying to fix a toilet that was supposed to require only a minor repair. In the end I declined both the service agreement and the part and was able to get the part from Lowe's for $10. After the technician left I also discovered that he had placed also placed a permanent Service Pro advertisement sticker on my water heater without consulting me. I have tried to remove it but have not been successful. Their service was average and not something that I would recommend to anyone else. I have had better service from plumbing companies in other areas and because he claimed he did not have the part I still had to contact another plumber to come out.

I contacted the service to fix a leaky faucet and pipe. They took apart the faucet and found that the packing had split, so they put it back together, leaving me with a faucet that leaked worse than when he came. they also replaced the trap under the sink. I was shocked to find that this came to over $260. I was told that they would get back with me about repairing the faucet. that has been over a week and I've not heard a word.

Response from Thomas & Galbraith Heating, Cooling & Plumbing
I apologize for any delay in getting your problems taken care of. I was unaware of any follow up needed but I did just speak with the technician that was at your home and he will be calling you shortly with the information you were waiting on. I would love to tell you we are perfect but obviously things do slip through the cracks sometimes and I do apologize for that. If the technician does not answer your questions or you need any other assistance please contact me directly and I would be glad to help you anyway I can. Thanks Alex Herrmann Operations Manager

I chose them using Angie's List because they are close to where I live and because they were highly rated. They were not the highest rated but maybe number three. Because it was the busiest time of year of A/C repair I didn't want to go right for number one because I thought they would be too busy to get to me right away. I believe Jacob Bros. had someone at by houses in 24 hrs. The Technician was very nice, fixed the problem quickly and offered additional advice on maintaining my A/C and motor to avoid the problem again. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone. I just wish I remembered the technicians name so I could recommend him personally. As far as date and cost, I'm not sure of the exact numbers right now as it was a few months ago.
