We contacted this company for skunk removal. We should have asked more questions because had we understood more, we would have not used the services offered to get rid of a skunk. We were not aware that Ohio law requires that any wild animal trapped, including raccoons, must be euthanized. We learned this when the company appeared to install traps. At that point, we had already incurred a nonrefundable $169 (less 10% Angie's List discount) fee just for the site visit. We also later learned that other companies offer a flat rate for services rather than a per-animal rate. With this service, you essentially have an open checkbook to pay $69 for any wild animal that wanders into the trap. Since skunks are pretty smart, you might spend a huge amount of money trapping animals and never get what you're after. This service certainly makes sense if you have an animal trapped in your home. But if you live, as we do, in a ravine area, and are simply after a skunk, it makes no sense at all. I wish the company had explained this.

Thank you for taking the time to evaluate our services. I appreciate you letting me know that there were things you did not understand. I have been revising and refining my presentation for over 20 years and thought I had it down to words and phrases that were clearly understandable to everyone. Obviously I missed the boat with you and apologize. I will take some time and re-evaluate not only what I say, but also how I say it. Too ensure you are not misinformed: State law prohibits translocation of raccoons, opossums, skunks, coyote, fox, and beaver. Any of these animals removed from a property must be euthanized in accordance with strict regulations. The biological reasoning for this is the spread of disease. Each of these species is a vector of one or more interspecies transmitted diseased, such as rabies, canine distemper, feline distemper, leptospirosis, parvovirus, para influenza, along with a host of parasites and some other diseases I can't spell or pronounce. If animals are translocated, there is a high probability that diseases and parasites will be hitch hiking with them thus infecting another area. Prohibiting translocation of vector animals is truly an effort to preserve wildlife populations by limiting the spread of disease, just as the travel of those who had been to countries with the ebola outbreak was restricted. Even though you had us stop prematurely, keep in mind, your service fee is good for an additional 30 days if you would like us to resume services. Sincerely, Dirk E Shearer, President The Wildlife Control Company, Inc. www.YourOhioWildlifePro.com

The gentleman who answered the phone (owner, I'm assuming) spent at least 15 minutes discussing my issue. Not only did he provide helpful information, he also confirmed the "diagnosis" from another provider and was complimentary of their work. This never happens! He was very knowledgeable and was willing to share. I am not using this company for this particular situation but will use them in the future if I have a need and recommend them based on my fantastic experience today.

Thank you for taking the time to post your experience. Our industry is a pretty small one and most of us know other operators, if not personally then by reputation. A lot of us are friendly competitors and rely on one another to bounce ideas off of. We also know which operators we have to "follow" to finish jobs on a regular basis. If you are currently working with one of the "good" guys and you are happy with their pricing we will tell you to stay with them. We don't talk about those with less than stellar reputations, but if that situation presents itself, we'll jump right in and compete with our own pricing. Here's hoping you do not need our service, but we'll be happy to assist you if you do!!! Sincerely, Dirk E Shearer, President The Wildlife Control Company, Inc. www.YourOhioWildlifePro.com

I think that they were right. I think that the bats were probably just hanging out. I haven't seen anymore evidence of bats. It was fine. I thought it was a little pricey. He was here for maybe 10 minutes. I appreciated that he filled in the silicone but that's just their service fee but for him putting in the silicone was kind of a quote and quote favor but considering that they just come out and they look for 10 minutes and say the problem, I thought that was pretty pricey. I would probably look around to see if I could find somebody cheaper but if everybody is about the same, I would call them again.
Description of Work: I did use the Wildlife Control Company. I had some bats on my front porch and they came out to look and investigate. He went ahead and resealed the silicone and fill in some of the gaps, that another company did before, for me.

Thank you for taking the time to evaluate our service. I'm with you about pricing. I have a family of six and when we have services at our home we get that service fee too!!!! I originally typed out a bunch of stuff about taxes, regulations, and overhead but thought it a bit boring and I could go on and on about that. I decided to delete it. But being in business for myself, I understand that any service provider has already incurred a large number of expenses just in getting to me to provide those services. Not that we like it as consumers, its just the way it is, so I certainly understand. Our policy (except on rare occasions) is to offer a 30 day return, so if you need us to come out for ANY reason within 30 days, you will not incur the Service Fee again. Once again, I, my family, and my staff appreciate you taking the time to evaluate us and appreciate your business. Without you, our clients, we could not do what we love and take care of our families at the same time. Thank you for taking the time to rate our services. I am happy to see that we rated all A's (except the pricing, ugh). I know it is difficult to justify the pricing to remove a little chipmunk. Unfortunately, the fixed costs of doing business do not change when we are picking up one of those little guys or a raccoon or groundhog. I keep trying to get my crew to lower their labor rates when they are picking them up but they say an hour is an hour and want paid the same. Checked with the gas stations and they wouldn't give me a discount on that fuel either, dang it. All kidding aside, we know we have to earn your business!!! What I appreciate the most is that you stated you would use our services again. That is most telling and is what we strive for. I think obviously the price was I disliked because once they got, there wasn't like a come out and gave a quote. It was like bottom line price type thing. It was just straight price, they fixed it no matter what they did. It wasn't Dirk himself. It was one of his workers. He put the flashing up over the vent so the birds would stop getting in and that was it. There were birds getting in but when he went up there, there is nothing up there at that time. They did do what I asked them to do. Like I said, I just think the price was a little high, but that's it.
Description of Work: I've used Wildlife. His name is Dirk. They basically put a new screen over my attic and on the outside of the house so that birds would stop coming in.

Possible animal in attic. Noise heard several days ago lasting about 15 minutes. Nate went up on our roof and did inspection. No indication that animal could get into attic. Probable cause was bird caught in metal chimney that managed to get free. The service call price is good for 30 days. Which we appreciate in the event we hear again.

went ok, except the snake didn't show up while Dirk was there. He searched all areas of the basement for the snake. Ended up leaving a disposable trap for the snake. He inspected the house for entry points for critters, and made recommendations to stop entry into the house. I thought was on the expensive side for he was only at the house for about 45 minutes, and would charge an additional $69 to pick up the snake if requested.

I called on a Wednesday evening after seeing the groundhogr un into a NEW hole right up against my house. I'd seen the critter running around my yard and under the deck, but the final straw was when he dug a burrow against the foundation of the house. It was almost 6pm when I left a distraught message on their machine. I hadn't started with Angie's List. I started with the bug place that I used when I first moved into the house (that I found here on Angie's List). They directed me to Wildlife Control Company...I read their reviews as I was calling them. Within 15 mins I got a call back. They wanted to come out the next day, which was fine...but I work during the day and I couldn't come home to meet them. They came out to set the traps wthout me. They walked me through their plan and told me what I needed to do-- including clearly explaining about calling the catch/no catch line each morning. When I got home that evening the the trap was empty and the same thing the next morning, but Thursday I came home a bit early and the critter was in the cage under the bay window munching on an apple and stinking up my backyard! (Who knew how icky groundhogs smell!!!) They picked up the varmit in a timely manner and re-set the traps to be sure there were no other critters roaming around. They left them baited for 4 more days and when nothing was caught they came and picked up the traps -- no questions asked. The provided outstanding service in a timely manner with the utmost respect for my time/schedule!

The company did trap a critter, but that's all they did correctly. We moved shortly thereafter and had our mail forwarded in January 2011. We renewed mail forwarding in June of 2011 to be sure nothing fell through the cracks. Today, April 11, 2014, we received a letter from a collection agency claiming we owe $166.81, including $19.50 in interest. We have never seen a bill; we would never fail to pay a contractor. Shocked, I called the owner, Dirk Shearer, who told me he didn't have access to any records because he wasn't in his office, and that I should contact the collections agency because our bill was "six months old." We used this company 3 years ago, so I wondered if they had the right family. I told him I wanted to understand what happened through him since he's the person we hired. He refused. If this company had billed us in 2010-2011 their bill would have been forwarded. I don't know if the bill is accurate because I don't have a copy. Our phone number is publicly listed, our new address is public information--if he had billed us his bill would have been returned. Really shoddy customer care. As a small business owner I always give preference to local professionals, but this was a mistake. Choose another provider.

Response from The Wildlife Control Company Inc
As you see in the report, we did capture and remove the offending animal. At no time did the client have an issue with our service or performance UNTIL we had to contract with a collections agency to receive payment. Numerous statements were sent to the address we had on file. We are not, and do not intend to be, a skip trace agency and had no way to know that this particular client had moved. While this is an administrative issue (in not having the correct contact information) it does not change the fact that we have not been paid for services. I appreciate that you have never "failed to pay a contractor", but obviously we have not been paid. We submitted all accounts that were six months or more past due (regardless of the reason they were past due), up to the legal statute of limitations. That is why your account was placed in collections. Had I been in my office, rather than in my truck I would have looked up the information you requested. However, the collections agent is now the legal assignee of this account. That is why I recommended you go through them. We are in contact with them to provide any documentation that may be needed. When you get the documentation, you will see that the balance has not been paid. At that point I expect payment will be made and we will both be satisfied, and you can continue to be able to state that you have never "failed to pay a contractor". I understand that this can be just as frustrating for you as it is for us. I really hate when we have to fight and scrap to get payment, but these days it happens far to often. As a small business owner yourself, you know that the bills keep coming even if your clients don't pay you in a timely manner. If the shoe were on the other foot so to speak, and it was your company trying to collect a past due amount, would I be JUSTIFIED in giving your company an "F" in all facets because you were trying to collect a past due amount? I can't explain why you did not get your statements forwarded. I can only hope that we can solve this justly and amiably. Sincerely, Dirk E Shearer, President The Wildlife Control Company, Inc. www.YourOhioWildlifePro.com

Thank you for taking time to evaluate our services. I am happy that we were able to service your needs in a way you were happy with. It is unfortunate that you live in an area that will almost always have animals nearby. I wish there was a way we could spray a repellent that was truly effective. I keep experimenting with new products to determine their effectiveness and none of them perform to a standard that I would be willing to stake my reputation on. In fact, most of them do not work at all, but their marketing is sure effective at separating folks from their money! If you ever develop a repellent that works, make sure I am your partner. You can retire and I'll run the business, because every enterprise that does what we do will be out of business!!!

After 2 weeks, they didn't catch anything. They said they "now believe the sounds are from either rats or mice, and we don't catch those, and you will have to contact a different company" ... but then they still charged me for basically doing nothing. They people I talked to were nice enough ... but they are definitely NOT a result oriented company.
Description of Work: After I called, they said that they believed that the sounds were coming from either squirrels or raccoons in my roof. They came out, and set traps and had me check them every morning and let them know if there was anything caught. I thank you for your review. We inspected your property on November 20th and found a soffit torn down/missing from your house trailer. Obviously, this would not be the work of mice. We suspected raccoons, as squirrels are not strong enough to pull a soffit off a structure. We set traps as you indicated, you also stated you thought the noises were too loud for mice. Given this information we addressed the situation as we should have. Traps were active from the 20th of November through the 10th of December (less the Thanksgiving Holiday). We had an agreement that you call in by 8am to report the status of the traps. You did a pretty good job, but there were at least 4 occasions when you missed the call in time. We allowed you additional time to make your calls and did not charge you the maintenance fees that should have been assessed. We made attempts to accommodate your schedule as best we could. I can not tell you if the raccoon decided to move on, was killed by a car, or captured. We did run into a fur trapper in your neighborhood who was harvesting raccoons for their pelts (he told me he captured 12 raccoons in his backyard). In fact, he lives less than 1/4 mile from you. It is not possible for me to determine exactly what happened to the animal we were targeting. But I can state that we trapped for an appropriate amount of time and made a good faith effort to resolve your problem, making at least four trips to your site for the amount you were charged. We do not do mice, rats, or insects. Part of that is by choice, part by State Regulations, and partly because we do not feel we are properly trained and equipped to provide satisfactory results to our clients. We focus on Wildlife issues, thus our recommendation to contact a company that specializes in mice. I sincerely believe that you originally were dealing with a raccoon. I also believe that you may have had mice also. Once the raccoon, moved, died, or was captured then the mice became the issue. You were also afforded our standard 30 day return policy, in that, if you experienced another wildlife issue within that time frame, you would not be charged the Service Fee again (just in case the raccoon came back). I am sorry you feel the way you do and perhaps this explanation may make you feel a bit differently. From the first call, the company was professional and responsive to the problem. They respectfully listened to my concerns and clearly answered my questions about the process of trapping, animal exclusion and cleanup. They called ahead and arrived on time. They thoroughly inspected my basement to determine the point of entry and sealed it off. Then the technician set traps inside and outside, explaining the mechanism. The possum was caught the first night and removed promptly the next day. The traps were left in place for several days to ensure that a second animal was not present. I was very satisfied with the trapping/capture/removal service. Although they provided an estimate for further exclusion, I opted to use another service provider for that piece of the project. I definitely would recomment their removal service.

Three traps were set on a daily basis. We checked the traps each morning and called Wildlife Control if there was a catch or if the traps had been disturbed and required resetting. They would come pull out the varmet or reset the traps as necessary. We were charged for each animal caught which got a little pricey. But then again, they had to contend with three skunks, a raccoon and several ferrel cats. Wildlife advised us up front how they worked and the charges entailed. They were professional in their dealings with us, very knowledgeable, responsive and easy to work with. I'd recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: We had a number of varmets burrowing for grubs in the mulch spread over our child care center's playground. Over a two-week time period, Wildlife Control set a number of traps and caught a number of animals.

They set traps and cought the racoon the first day - no squirrels though. I had to call each morning and report the status of the traps. They came and took the racoon as advertised. Had the traps set for three days, then they removed them. All went very well. The only complaint is that I thought the service was expensive - even though their prices compared to other companies preforming this service.

Neighbor reported that sparrows were flying in and out of the louver opening in our attic. Called Wildlife Control immediately and the following day Nate arrived and screened the louver and removed the nesting materials in our attic. The cost seemed a bit steep but am confident that the job was well done and the screening was of the highest quality.

It went great!! They called me at work to let me know that they were on their way to my home. I met them there and they had already removed the nest that was in my soffet on the back of the house. He put screws in the soffet to repair the board that came loose. He also looked all around my house to make sure there were no other nest problems. He showed me a vent that should have a cap on it to keep the birds out so I had him put the cap on it. Serviceman was friendly and professional.

Had them come out 2 months ago to inspect scratching sounds in the attic. Found it was squirrels trying to get in. Happened again and they informed me they updated the service fee to $189 from $79. Too high in my opinion but overall did what they said they would.

I was surprised at the review we received from you, so I took some time to research and make sure I could respond appropriately. The nature of the complaint was chewing noises. Our inspection revealed an area where squirrels were chewing on the house in an attempt to enter, but had not yet succeeded. We set traps in case they returned to continue their efforts. After a period of one week, they had not returned. We sealed the area to prevent squirrel entry. Our policy is to warrant our repairs (but not the whole house) against wildlife entry for a period of one to three years depending on the type of repair that was done. Yours is a three year warranty on the repair. Once again, keep in mind that we can't warrant the whole house, as we had nothing to do with its construction or the manner that it is maintained. You stated we did the work two months ago. Our records indicate we set your job up on December 11th, 2012 and completed your work on December 18th, 2012. While our policy is that your service fee is good for 30 days from the initial completion of the job, it has been almost six months since we did your work. Since "We don't do rats, mice, insects or in-laws" (that is one of our tag lines in our ads) and the dates you said the work was done don't match up, I suspect you may have had another company come out and treat for mice and simply got mixed up. It has happened on at least one other occasion. Another reason I think you may have had someone else out, is our Service Fee (at the time of your service) was $149 and the repair, which was minor, was $69. Your total bill came to $232.72 including tax. You state that you paid $79 for a mouse treatment. In any case, I am sorry the work we did for your squirrel chewing on the house did not address any mouse issues that you may have had or do have, but our work was not intended to. With the reproductive rate of mice being in the neighborhood of one litter every two to three weeks, if you got two months out of the initial baiting, I would think that pretty good. There are several very good "pest control" companies listed here on Angie's List and I would recommend you contact them for any suspected mouse or insect issues you may have. If this has been an ongoing issue, I would certainly recommend you talk to them about a monthly, or at least quarterly treatment program. If you can, I would also request you take some time and ensure this is an accurate review of the work we did for you in December 2012. Respectfully Yours, Dirk E. Shearer, President The Wildlife Control Company, Inc.

The last thing I expected that I would need to do was remove a groundhog from my property. I invite all types of wildlife into my yard but I had to draw the line at burrowing next to my house foundation. I noticed the burrow on a Thursday and spent that night researching companies on Angie's List. I contacted The Wildlife Control Co first thing on Friday. Dirk said that he could have someone out the following Monday/Tuesday. I asked whether someone was available that Friday and he said he would see if someone could come out that day. Dirk then explained the pricing which seemed reasonable to me. Nate came out by 1PM ! He recommended a trap that would be set close to the entrance of the burrow. The trap was baited and in less than an hour, the ground hog was caught ! I was so relieved (although I hated to have to trap the groundhog). I immediately called Dirk and asked whether someone could come out still on Friday to remove the groundhog. Within two hours, another wildlife tech. came and removed the groundhog. Since I did not know if I had more than one groundhog, the tech. reset the trap. Overnight Friday a racoon was caught in the trap which Wildlife Control picked up by 10:30AM on Saturday. They have a process where you call by 8AM to report whether anything is in the trap and whether you need more bait. Newspaper was also placed in the burrow entrance - if it was moved then I would know I had another groundhog (in case the trap did not capture another groundhog). I did not want to trap anything other than the groundhog so I undid the trap for Saturday night. Since I felt that I only had the one groundhog I asked that Wildlife Control pick up their trap on Sunday. I would defintely contact Wildlife Control again if needed (but I hope that I don't !). Thanks Wildlife Control for your prompt attention to my problem !!

Thank you for your glowing report!!! I will have to say that the stars aligned on your job. Though we try to provide prompt service, we can't always make it the same day we are called to set traps. Obviously, we try to catch the animals as quickly as possible, but they don't always cooperate as well as your groundhog did! Rest assured, had it taken longer, we are always patient and persistent until the job is done. Sincerely, Dirk E Shearer, President The Wildlife Control Company, Inc.

Thank you for taking the time to evaluate our services. Your comments are valued and used to try to help improve our work. I am not sure how we can improve our pricing, as all prices are presented and agreed to prior to providing services. Given that, I must assume that the prices are acceptable before we even start. I know we are not the cheapest option, nor are we the most expensive. We do appreciate you choosing The Wildlife Control Company, Inc. for your wildlife conflict, and if you need additional services, hope you will consider us again. Sincerely, Dirk E Shearer, President The Wildlife Control Company, Inc.

Had a problem with birds and nests built on and behind some trim work on the front of the house. There were so many that the early morning noise made it impossible to sleep past 4:30 if the windows were open. I called Wildlife Control Co. They came out the following day, evaluated the situation, and provided a solution and estimate. I approved the estimate. They then ordered the materials and completed the work the following week. I thought the price was a bit high... but then again, labor costs are too high for everything.
Description of Work: Removed bird nests and birds from exterior house trim, installed flashing to prohibit future bird nests from being built.
