He did a careful job, and the result looks good.
Description of Work: Installed paver bricks on paver brick driveway in area where a large tree had once been (we had a tree company remove the tree and grind the stump and then Mark dug out the wood chips, filled the hole and installed the paver bricks).

This was the second time I had used Mark on a project. I called him a couple of weeks earlier to discuss the problem and, without needing me to be home, he came by, surveyed the situation, and called with an estimate. He basically then performed the work the first non-rainy day he could fit me in. He did the work neatly and, as far as I can tell, effectively. Mark pointed out other non-emergency needs we should probably attend to, and I will be using him for that work, as well. What I appreciate most about Mark -- besides the quality of his work -- is that he is very straightforward to deal with, and his rates are completely reasonable.
Description of Work: Mark patched holes in the mortar between our exterior bricks that were admitting moisture into our interior walls.

The sealing on the patio and sidewalks was faulty. I hired him to seal them to prevent moss growth and now I have actual plants growing in the space. He said this is because of a poorly manufactured sealant product and now says he has no way of properly sealing the patio and sidewalks like he originallly promised. He also replaced the mortar on my front porch and the mortar is already crumbling. He blames salt damage, but I did not salt it this winter. All I am asking for is a refund and he is not willing to deal with me.
Description of Work: Repaired my stone porch. Also sealed brick patio and sidewalks to prevent moss and weeds growing between bricks. He has also expanded my brick driveway.

Response from Mark Monnette Masonry
I completed seven different jobs for [the member] in the past year. The first job consisted of replacing the crumbing mortar on his stone front steps as well as relaying the brick in front of the stone landing at the bottom of the steps. I thought the damage to the mortar was caused by salt and told him so. The job of putting Brick-Block on the back patio was done after other jobs were completed. I bring that up because checks were written for combined jobs. Most were word of mouth with no contracts. Anyway, in late April My Dyer called to have me check on weeds growing on the rear patio. I went over the next morning to look at the problem and called him that same evening. A little ways into the disscusion he said he wanted his money back. The price on the job was 565.00 and if said I would do that. He then started cussing me out ending with him saying f- you. I hung up. Two weeks latter I got a letter from Angie's List about this issue. I called Allen as soon as I got the letter and said I wanted to come over and fix the weed problem. He said I could. Before I hung up I told him that him cussing was unnessary because I was going to either fix the problem or return the money. He said that he was having a bad day when we last talked. I also brought up the complaint about the mortar out front but he said he could not remember much about that and only wanted to get the weed problem fixed. I bring this up because salt was still being placed on the stone front steps in Feb. 2011. I know this because he paided me over 1000.00 to power wash those steps and driveway and apply Salt-Guard. Why would anyone spent that kind of money to protect something from salt if they didn't use it. Besides, when we power washed them we saw rock salt being washed off. Anyway, I pulled all the weeds out back, used Round-up, then power washed the entire patio again, Put down new sand in all the joints and sealed them with Brick-Block. After I called Angie's List to say I had completed the job, he then tried to get the joints in front fixed. He say's he did not put salt down. That may be true only because he paid someone else to do it. He's mad at me because I insulted him by hanging on him. I did that because he was cussing me out. Had he been civil fron the start, this complaint would never occured. I have no responsbility for the salt damage out front. I took pictures in May 2011 of the area(dated with that days newspaper) and beside the newer joints I puy down you can see the original mortar joints falling apart. I do nice work for a fair price. Proof of that is the 300 plus positive reports I have been given.

Mark examine the work to be done and gave me an estimate. It was difficult to statt the work becuse of several continuous days of rain, but Mark kept me informed and did the work during breaks in the rain. The brick now look better than they did when they were originally installed.

The job was done pretty quickly, over the course of a couple days. We were pleased with the punctuality of service, the advice regarding care of the porch, and the quality of the work. Much better than other firms, which only left a card without a quote.

Went great. Mark was, by far, the lowest quote we got. Frankly, that kind of made me nervous. However, I quickly learned that jobs like these do not have to be expensive. Mark was friendly, professional and did a fantastic job. He reattached all the stones, found matching stones and filled in everything with cement. Looks perfect. This guy DEFINITELY knows what he is doing and was $200-$400 less than our other quotes. I highly recommend him.

He did a good job. We needed to do it in a short timeline and he was very accommodating. We were happy with the finished product. I think it was just him but I wasn't there when he came so I can't say for sure, but I believe it was just him. We just used him twice and we found him on Angie's List and he had a good score. We did not have any problems with him or his work. He was there on time and cleaned up after himself.

Mr. Monnette is knowledgeable and used different materials as were appropriate. For example, in addition to mortar, he used a bonding material to secure individual overhead stones in the arched entry but used a different mixture to re-build a new corner for the cement porch and a third mixture to re-surface a step. In re-surfacing the step, he remedied the issue of a slippery surface and ensured a pleasing-to-the-eye cosmetic outcome. Also, I have to look hard now to find the cracks he filled in the several bricks. Mr. Monnette is very fast. The work took less than 1.5 hours each day. It is a bonus that even though he is fast, Mark is not abrupt with the client but is a really nice, cheerful guy. He also is a very neat person. I had no clean up after. He accomplished a lot in a very short amount of time and resolved a bunch of issues for a very reasonable cost to me. I also appreciate that he did the work when he said he would.
Description of Work: It is noteworthy that Mr. Monnette gave me an estimate at the time he observed what needed to be done; I did not have to wait a week or even a day for an estimate work-up. Mr. Monnette secured overhead stones in the arched stone entry, re-built a new concrete corner to replace a corner of my porch that had broken off, re-surfaced a step that was slippery when wet, added mortar where needed in 30 year-old brick work, and filled small cracks in serveral bricks. Mr. Monnette quickly followed up on our initial phone conversation by coming to my home to see my problems, and he gave an estimate right then and there while explaining in detail what he would do for remediation. I didn't bother to get any more estimates because I liked his explanations, his cost estimate, and I especially liked his timeline. He started the work the very day weather permitted and finished the following day, with the weather prediction in mind.

I have a brick & concrete front porch that is sagging badly. I contacted Mark by phone and he committed to checking out my porch the next day. He called shortly thereafter to tell me that it was not the kind of work he felt competent to do. He took extra time to tell me what he thought the cause was and to discuss possible remedies. Very courteous and professional.

Mark was easy to contact, professional in his manner and responded in a timely fashion. He explained the work he'd have to do, then gave me a time table as to when the work could be completed. The weather co-operated and Mark completed the project on time. The finished job looked good and solved my problem.
Description of Work: Mark pulled up and scrapped off old caulking and various other items we used to plug a gap between our front porch stoop and siding. Next he poured concrete to fill the large gap then brushed the surface of the newly poured concrete for a nice finish.

Mark helped me cut through my basement wall in order to install an egress window. I'm an avid DIY'er but I've never handled a concrete saw so I thought it was best to get a contractor to assist. Mark was extremely responsive and flexible. Mark came by on a Saturday morning, zipped though the wall and hauled away the debris. I'm planning on installing a few more windows in my basement and I'll be going back to Mark to cut through the walls again.

We had a lot of rescheduling because of the rainy weather, but Mark was very good about keeping me informed on exactly when he would and wouldn't be arriving. He's a very good communicator. The steps look better than the original. My only disappointment is with the compound he used to re-seal the back patio. The heavy rains washed out some of the mixture leaving holes, but I haven't called Mark about it because I'm too busy.
