Bottom Line Up Front: Butler Heating and Air Conditioning Company does excellent work at a reasonable price. I highly recommend this company. My A/C unit was freezing up and while the unit continued to run it was not cooling the house. I called Butler Heating and A/C Co. as they have done work for us previously. The technicians who responded were timely, extremely professional and technically competent. Key to note, Corey, the lead technician and his co-worker were motivated and prepared to "work." They completed an analysis of the system and identified a leak in the evaporator coil. They estimated 2-hours work would be needed to repair the unit with a reasonable cost. This included the labor, capturing and replacing the refrigerant and repairing the coil. They completed the work as estimated and the unit performs better than new! Of note, prior to Butler's work, I had an analysis completed by another company. This company would only consider replacing the evaporator coil and estimated would take 4-hours with a written estimate of $1880!!! This estimate is high even for replacing the coil. As I said at the beginning, Butler Heating and Air Conditioning Co is a great company in my opinion. They benefit the community with old school values ... they do great work for a reasonable price.
Description of Work: Evaluated the heating and A/C system. Provided a solution to correct A/C problem.

On July 2 I received a phone call from Steve at Butler Heating and Air Conditioning about the cost of the knob for my PTAC unit. He was very apologetic and stated that more research should have been done by his staff. He is refunding the $88 I paid for the knob. I appreciate his efforts and will use Butler in the future. In fact I bought my PTAC unit from them originally and they were great. Please note that I have changed my rating on A..
Description of Work: I called to obtain a new knob for my ac/heating unit in my sunroom. I also decided to have the cleaned and serviced. The tech was very professional and did a good job, but the company did not send the knob he did not know anything about it. He called and was told that they would have to charge me $45 to go and pick it up. I had to call the manager and him know that it was his fault that it was not sent out since that is what I originally called about. He finally relented and did not charge me for the trip, but he did charge me $80 for a knob that i could have gotten from an internet supplier for $20. He told me that his supplier charged him $80. I had just purchased a new home and during the home inspection it was noted that the A/C wasn't working, so I had expected I'd have to spend some money in this. Called them out and while they did confirm that all the hardware was working and all that was obviously wrong was that there was no coolant in the system, they then quoted me anywhere between $800 to $1000 (in addition to the $130 I was paying just for the service visit) just for the amount of coolant I'd need, and it may just leak out and be completely wasted. I asked about repairing the existing system (checking for leaks, repairing/replacing whatever caused the leak, etc.) and they made it clear that for what it would cost it would just be cheaper to buy a new unit. Not having $3500 to put into it I did some research, and for $214.57 I was able to buy enough of the correct coolant to fill the system twice over, and all the hardware to check the lines, fill them, etc. They were very prompt, responsive, professional and courteous, and did have a sales rep out within a few days after the technician visit to quote an entirely new system and while everything they quoted makes sense, I won't likely go with them considering they. Overall, they did nothing unprofessional, weren't strictly speaking dishonest about anything, they do apparently however have extremely over-inflated prices for service considering I spent $130 and really had nothing to show for it, when I fixed the entire issue for just over $200.
Description of Work: Confirmed that my A/C unit wasn't cooling but hardware was functional.

The EPA requires certification and extensive training and testing to handle and work with R-22 refrigerant. DIY is always the cheapest way to approach any home project, but when dealing with toxic chemicals, calling a professional is always advised.

They came out to relight my pilot light. When they arrived, they stated that the furnace needed to be cleaned and charged me $300. When I asked him about a discount, he told me that he was not charging for the extra 30 minutes. My pilot light went out again shortly after and I called them back to relight it. They stated since it had been over 30 days since the previous visit, they would charge me another $69. I told them I would not pay that amount and hired another service provider. When the new company looked at the furnace, they stated it had not been thoroughly cleaned to begin with. I was very disappointed by this service experience from Butler.

Upon investigation, we found that we did not perform services at the address this customer provided, but rather an address that may have been her previous residence. We reviewed this customer’s account and we have no record of her calling in with any complaints. We guarantee our service work for 30 days and after that amount of time, we must charge another service call fee of $79.00 if it is found to be an unrelated issue. Although [member name removed] states that she hired a company that claims we did not do a thorough cleaning of the pilot assembly, we stand behind our work. Our technician did state on his invoice that the pilot orifice would need replaced if problems continued. Our office attempted to contact [member name removed] on four separate occasions since the complaint has been filed with Angie’s List and she has failed to return our phone calls.

The furnace is the original unit that came with the house (1996) and definitely not the top of the line. I was trying to get the system through one more winter before considering a replacement. The control unit located of the furnace itself had received water damage and had become intermittent. As luck would have it, the unit failed on the coldest night of the month. I put a call into Butler's afterhours night line and they were out to the house by 0800 the very next morning. The service person was professional and responsive to our questions. He quickly replaced the unit (spare in the truck) and even installed (for free) the thermostat that I hadn't gotten around to installing. They were finished and the house was warming up within 45 minutes. Well Done Butler. I would definitely utilize them again and recommend their services to anyone.

I feel that I have explained enough about this, in my explantation of what the contractor did not want to do. I am begining to think this out more clearly also about Angie's List !!!!!!!!!!!!
Description of Work: I feel that this contractor was misleading. I also feel that Angie's List has a misleading ad, for the contractor. The add is for 69.95 I asked them about that and was given a answer that was for a service call... to fix something that is wrong with the system. I just asked to have them to look at the system to keep it from having a problem. Oh, is there really a difference here. Why put misleading ads on Angie's List??? I pay for Angie's List to find a contractor, that will stand by his deal. I now would like to know if Angie's List is collecting the correct information from the people and thier reviews.

Thank you for taking the time to read my response. This was an interesting situation with this member. The member called into our office to inquire about the “Big Deal” offered by our company and Angie’s List which is listed for $69.00. The services offered with this particular coupon are specifically related to a diagnostic service call; which is to figure out what the problem is when a unit is not working properly. This customer wanted our company to look at his unit to keep it from having an issue which is preventative maintenance. Our Service Representative explained the difference between a preventative maintenance check and a service call. This customer did not request service, and we did not charge him $129.00. We are a very professional and reputable company. This is why we are a 5 time Angie’s List Super Service Award winner. We are also a BBB Integrity nominee and winner. We do stand by the deal we are offering on Angie’s List- $69.00 for Heating or Cooling Service Call and Diagnostic, not preventative maintenance check.

The service provider arrived right on time. He quickly assessed the problem which was a backdraft in the vent to the outside casuing the system to trip off. He checked all the possible failure points, adjusted the gas pressure and flame sensor and increased the fan speed to aovid problems in the future. It was very refreshing to have a service provider tell you the truth and not take advantage of the situation and try to sell you unnecessary repairs.

My technician found the problem very quickly. He took me to the unit, showed me the frozen coil and explained the problem. I ask him to explain everything to my husband, so we called him at the office. He said they had the needed part in inventory, told us a price (that was very reasonable). Told me that he could be back out first thing the next morning to repair. By 10:30 I could already tell a difference in how my house was cooler than it had been. I have had Butler coming to my house in the spring and fall for a system check-up for several years. I got busy and let this past spring slip by. I will not let that happen again. Every one that I have talked to in the office and my technician have all been very professional and friendly.
Description of Work: Replaced the coil in my system. My old one had some leaks and had formed a huge ice d***. My AC was running almost constantly trying to cool things down without much success. After JD replaced the parts/coil and refilled with coolant everything worked great.

Butler Heating came through for us again! We had used Butler three years ago when we replaced our furnace and A/C and they did a great job. So when we decided to have a sunroom built there was no question about who we would call this time around. Before we made any final decisions about the sunroom, I contacted Eddie Bennett to ask him what my options would be for heating and cooling a sunroom. I knew that a room with so much glass would be more challenging to heat and cool. He suggested a Mitsubishi Mini Split system. I had been doing some research and had also seen the same type of system recommended for sunrooms. Once we made a decision on what type of sunroom we wanted, Eddie came to out to our house to get a feel for where the unit could be installed. This was before anything was built so he had to use a lot of imagination!! This was not an easy task because the sunroom would be attached to the house where there was also a whole wall of windows. This meant there wouldn't be any traditional walls and this didn't leave many options on where to install the indoor unit. After discussing it for a while we came to the conclusion that it would need to be installed in the place of one of the transoms. I contacted the sunroom company and asked them to replace one of the transoms with a solid panel. Although "solid" is really a relative term since the walls are filled with foam insulation and couldn't support the weight. Eddie suggested that we might be able to mount a piece of plywood that could be used to attach the indoor unit. I discussed this with the engineer from the sunroom company and he said it should be doable. Once the sunroom was built, Eddie came back out to see what the sunroom wall looked like and discussed the plan for attaching the plywood with the sunroom installer and confirmed that the plan should work, although there was a limited area where the plywood could be attached. On the scheduled day of the installation, Eddie came out to make sure Brandon, the installer, had the information about what was planned for the installation. Brandon did a nice job with the installation (with some help from a couple of other guys), taking care to make sure everything looked nice. Terry also made some custom line covers so the electric, refrigerant lines, and the condensation tubing would look nice on the outside of the sunroom. They are white and blend in very nicely. Check out the photos I have attached to the review and you will see what a nice job they did. After the installation was done, a couple of minor issues came up and they were quickly corrected. One of these issues was that a screw had been put in a bit too low and it prevented me from removing the screen so I could wash the window. Brandon came back out and promptly fixed that. The only installation issues that came up were due to not having a regular wall for the installation. The unit does both heating and cooling and I like that it can automatically switch from a/c to heat when needed. Both the indoor and outdoor units are extremely quiet--just a gentle "whoosh" of the air flow. Having it mounted up on a wall means it isn't in the way. The sunroom was just finished at the end of the summer and with this unit we will be able to enjoy it year around. We have only had it in for about six weeks, but so far it is working well. Eddie definitely went above and beyond the service you would normally expect from a sales rep. For some companies, once you sign a contract you never hear from the sales rep again. That is definitely not the case here, and Eddie answered all of my many questions, gave me suggestions on how to best operate the system, and did everything to make sure we were satisfied with the installation. Over the summer with our sunroom project, we used a total of 10 different companies. Of these companies, two of them gave us outstanding service and Butler Heating was one of those two companies. Thanks to everyone at Butler Heating that helped with this challenging installation. This was a job well done, and based on past experience, I expected nothing less!

I was very happy with the quality of service and my experience with Butler. I had obtained several different quotes (4), and though this was not the lowest, I felt better about the process after the consultation and took a chance based on the other reviews and my gut feeling. The initial consultation was able to adequately address my concerns and we actually discussed in detail what and how things would occur. (Caveat: you need to know what you are looking for and what to ask for--I am glad we discussed the need for the custom condenser box--they initially showed up with a generic box to try to use, but since we had discussed it prior and it was in the contract--a custom one was fabricated which I am much happier with.) My sales rep was Eddie and the installer was Bill. The quality of the install was very good especially since they had some existing areas to work around--all worked out well. This was not an 8 hr job, but the quality at the end was well worth it.........Only concern was there was a come-back because all of the required parts were not on the truck the first time out, but it was handled professionally and resolved. Even if the parts were there--I don't believe it still could have been accomplished in 1 day. I would recommend Butler based on my experience. I felt I had an honest appraisal of the situation, and the quality of workmanship was excellent. It has been about a month since the install and I have not had any issues whatsoever.

Stay away from these guys. We asked for a quote to replace the A/C in our house. The representative arrived at the apponted time, examined our A/C unit and attempted to sell us a new furnace and air conditioner. By the way, our furnace was just fine and no problems. He spent the entier time telling me our furnace and A/C both needed to be changed. It was a rather pitaful and pathetic attempt to sell us something we didn't need nor want. He left giving me a quote of $10,763. By the way, the description Butler has in Angie's List is for a free quotation. Yes, it does, on the left side of their description of their services proffered. Well guess what? I have now received an overdue billl for $79 for the visit. Let me be clear! We asked only for a quote. We did not ask for service and they clearly provided none. The "past due bill" notice we received states that we requested and they provided only a quotation. As you can imagine with this experience, we accepted the quotation from Brockman & Sons who replaced our A/C unit for a cost of $3515 and we were delighted with their professionalism, service, and quality. Give them a call.

Our records show that the customer requested an evaluation of their existing air conditioning system and an estimate on replacement. Our service technician verified that the air conditioning system was low on refrigerant charge and therefore not working properly. Since evaluation and estimate was requested, we charged the minimum of a diagnostic fee. The technician gave an estimate for good, better and best equipment options, and yes, the best option did include a furnace. The other two options were for air conditioning only. We do provide free estimates on major equipment replacements, but our Comfort Advisors are not equipped as Service Technicians to check system performances. If this is requested, a service technician is needed. We have since credited (deleted member name) account for the $79.00 diagnostic fee since he was not satisfied with our service.

I called Butler because of the good reviews on AL. My AC was not working properly - cool air was not coming out of the registers. They came out and Joseph, the technician, looked at the AC. He told me the contactor and capacitor were not working and he needed to replace them. He did so and then told me with the new parts he could now detect that the compressor had seized and was not working...so I needed a new unit. He wanted to charge me for the new parts (a total of almost $500 including a service agreement) and I told him that the new parts did not make my AC unit work and I did not feel right about paying for them - DUH! He took the new parts out (after he had to call his company) and I was charged $250 for the hours and check-up fee. Because of the high price investment of a new AC/Furnace, I called another company to get a second estimate. Summers PHC was recommended by my dad and Brandon came out just after Butler had left. He wanted to take a look at the AC to make sure I needed a new one. Here's the part that I'm struggling with - he opened up the AC and told me that the contactor was missing. WHAT??? Joseph, why did you take my contactor? I asked your boss and he had no explanation for me. To make a long story somewhat shorter, the capacitor was bad. But after Brandon replaced the bad capacitor and the missing contactor, the compressor worked and my AC was up and running again. He said it was NOT seized and worked fine with the new parts. I'm very disappointed with Butler and the technician Joseph. I know people can make mistakes. So my capacitor was not working - fine. Then replace the parts and fix the AC. You would have had a customer for life. My AC will go out in the future - it's older. I would have used Butler at some point to replace it. Now you have someone that will NOT recommend Butler and will never use their services. I gave the D for price because he wanted to charge me for parts that didn't make my AC work. The only reason they got a B for responsiveness was because when I called and talked to Lynn, the service manager, he agreed to refund my money. I thanked him. They get an F for professionalism because in my opinion, Joseph took the contactor out to make it look like my compressor did not work. Shame on you! UPDATE: I am changing two grades that I gave to Butler. I changed the Overall Experience from F to D and Professionalism from F to D. Since this incident, the president of Butler contacted me and apologized for the service I received. He asked me to send a copy of my invoice from Summers and he would pay for it. I was very impressed with how he contacted me right away and how he handled the situation. I'm sure it was difficult for him to hear what his technician did. He admitted fault and said the worker would be reprimanded. He owned up to the mistake even though he didn't make it. He sounds like a good guy and I appreciated his personal contact and trying to make the situation better for a customer. Butler returned my original check and also paid for the other company's invoice. Steve, I would like to thank you for taking care of this wrong and making it right. I wanted you to know that.

We are sincerely sorry for the inadequate service that we provided to this customer. Although this customer states, “they tried to rip me off”, this was not our intention. I noticed that the whole house humidifer was leaking on a Monday and immediatly started searching for HVAC companies on Angie's List. I chose Butler because I found positive reviews indicating they had worked on or installed whole house humidifiers. I called Butler on Tuesday and they were very accommodating. They scheduled me for that same day in the afternoon. They gave me the ?12pm to 5pm? window, which sucks, but is expected in any of these service industries, especially since I asked for same day service. They were more than willing to notify me 20-30 minutes prior to their arrival to allow me time to get home from work and meet them. Larry arrived and I showed him the problem area. He was very personable and professional. He immediately noted the problem and also determined the humidifier was wired wrong. He quickly repaired the wiring and advised the solenoid needed to be replaced. He said he would go crunch some number in his truck to determine the best price. I also asked him to take a look at the AC unit as I have had problems cooling during the last few summers. He went outside and inspected the AC unit. He found that the coils were clogged with dirt and grime. Asked me if I wanted him to clean it today and said he would run some numbers and let me know some pricing options. A few minutes later he came to me with a few price/service options. Larry offered me a bi-annual service plan in which a technician comes out and does regular maintenance twice a year. Once in the fall for the furnace and once in the spring for the AC. This service plan also provided discounts on parts and labor. Since I would be having the solenoid replaced in the fall, this seemed like a better deal. Larry also told me about some high-end furnace filters that Butler sells. He did not pressure me in any way to buy these. I asked for additional information on the filters and ended up ordering one, as I typically purchase the expensive Filtrete 3M filters for over $100 for six of them and the filters offered by Butler only cost $40.00 per year and a one-time $70.00 fee for the frame. The total for the day was around $460.00. This included the service plan, service call, Filers, AC cleaning and labor.
Description of Work: I found that the whole house humidifier was leaking. I took the cover off and found that the filter was clogged, causing the water to run out onto the floor. Once I removed the filter and turned off the humidifier I realized that the solenoid controlling the water flow was malfunctioning as the water continued to flow out. Butler H&A showed up and immediately recognized the problem and also found that the humidifier was wired incorrectly, as it should not be running when the AC is on. He promptly corrected the problem and checked the furnace unit at the same. He advised that the solenoid could be replaced in the fall when it gets cold out. I also asked him to look at the AC unit as I have had issues with cooling the house in past summers. He inspected the outside AC unit and immediately identified the problem. The coils were severely clogged with dust and dirt. He used a cleaning solvent and cleaned the coils, greatly increasing the efficiency of the Ac Unit.

Some friends in the neighborhood had some trouble with their furnace. We were calling around to find a part for the furnace and they were the only ones that would sell the part for a reasonable price rather than service the furnace themselves.
Description of Work: I last used Butler Heating and Air Conditioning Company yesterday.

My furnace wasn't performing as it should. In fact the pilot had gone out and I couldn't restart it. When I called the gas service company, they told me it wasn't a supply issue and they eventually got furnace working. However they noticed unsafe combustion and had to turn off the furnace. I called Butler on a Monday morning at 8AM and they dispatched a tech within 2 hours. Nathan from Butler arrived at the house and got right to work. He was extremely friendly and made no attempt to oversell or use scare tactics to try and up sell me into something I didn't need. I was presented with the options and a fair price. This was an excellent example of superb customer service by both the employee and the organization as a whole. I cannot recommend this company enough. Even with a small call such as this, I have no problem recommending them or choosing them for future repairs or replacement equipment. Nathan was very helpful in answering my questions and was both efficient and informative. I'm certain the space was cleaner after he left than when he arrived.
Description of Work: I had my furnace completely cleaned and routine maintenance applied to bring it back into a safe operating condition. My furnace was dismantled as much as possible and everything was inspected. The issue was quickly identified and work began shortly thereafter.

They were very prompt. They were very honest in what they had to say about what the problem was. They came and worked on a Saturday which they ordinarily don't do, to ensure that I had heat. I got a 95% efficient furnace for just a little higher price than another company wanted to charge for an 80% efficient unit. They also told me that my previous unit was probably not legally installed. There was only one problem: in starting up the furnace they were afraid it would set off my smoke alarm, so they took it down. They forgot to put it back up and I didn't realize it for about a week.
Description of Work: Butler Heating installed a new furnace.
