Kustom Home Inspection

Ken Harrington did a great job. He pointed out not only problems, but also positive features of the house. He spent over 3 hours on site and finished about 5:30 PM. To my surprise, I received a complete, detailed 37 page report, along with comments and pictures, via e-mail by 10:00 PM that same day! This is the second property his company has inspected for me, and I highly recommend him.

Mark went above and beyond. He gave me a very professional and detailed report. He gave me tips on things that I could check myself.

He changed his schedule to come out right away, and he was very nice the whole time he was here. It probably took a half hour or forty-five minutes to explain things to me and he went back to his office and sent us pictures. He even got the builder to pay for it. He was great!

Job went well, Ken took his time and educated me on all the items he found. Good experience overall and the computer pictures (same day) and reports are great.

They're very personable, but not sure if I would use them again. I have used them before to do things for other clients. They don't seem objective enough. They didn't seem to pay close attention to the details. I think that his knowledge would have been better spent just telling me what I needed to do.

He's very thorough and professional. He emailed me the report and photos documenting all the problem. The most reasonable for the quality. I have nothing bad to say.

He was able to go inspect the house quickly, called Friday and did it on Monday. He was able to fit them in very quick, which was a good thing.

Called Ken to set up the home inspection. He took my call and explained their process. He promised to confirm the inspection with an email once he talked to the listing agent (about access to the property) and sure enough I got an email the day before the inspection. Ken and his team of 2 inspectors Jerry and Ed (Yeah! I had three of them performing the inspection...made me feel special, not sure if they do this every time) performed an external and internal inspection of the property per ASHI standards and answered every concern. The inspection lasted 2:15 hours and their knowledge was astounding. Jerry, the chief inspector, was thorough and would not hesitate to ask his colleagues, Ken (owner) and Ed for second opinion. Very professional and courteous. I got the report within 5 hours. It was missing a couple of pictures. Jerry, went back to the house, I think, the next day and sent those pictures as well. Good company, great people!!!

The problem that I had is that we bought a house that has two kind of furnaces. One is an oil furnace, and right next to it is a wood burning furnace. It's illegal to vent both of these up through through the same flue, and he didn't catch this when he did his inspection. This was informed to us by the chimney repair man and the electrician. I couldn't believe that the home inspector did not catch something so obvious. Also, since we've moved in we've replaced all the windows in the home. A lot of them were rotted, and again I couldn't believe that he didn't catch this. If I ever hire a home inspector again, I would look with them at everything and be right at their side.

Now it is a few months later and we have issues with our furnace and ventilation. A HVAC company came out because it never should have passed inspection.

It was great. First of all, I emailed about 8 contractors to see if they would inspect my roof. Ken wrote back with exactly what I wanted and the price, so I chose him. When he came to the house, Ken looked at my roof (that had been damaged by the hail storm last year) and told me a couple of simple things I could do to keep it for another 2-5 years. He also gave me a reference for someone that could do some minor patching. Then he gave me a book about maintaining my house!

He was very friendly and informative. He discovered some mold in the attic and explained why it was there and what was causing it which was due to the bathroom ventilation. He did not go all the way into the attic due to a smaller access. He was able to spot the mold by a latter and distance visual inspection.

The owner was extremely helpful. I never had a hard time getting a hold of him. We ended up canceling the inspection but the message did not get to the actual inspector, causing them to do the inspection anyway. There was no charge to me for this, however. They were very nice.

Saved me from making a huge home buying mistake.

Jerry was there early and throughout the process he was informative, cheerful and energetic. He answered all the questions I had. He found several things we would have missed, and we were very pleased with him. The termite inspection was not a separate inspection, but was performed as he went along. I was not happy with the "septic inspection," which I expected to be an inspection of the entire septic system. He put dye down the drains, which is a common practice but which might only show the area around the tank was saturated. He did not inspect the leach field. I have since read that some of the dyes used by inspectors are known carcinogens, although I don't know if this was the case here. The radon inspection was performed by a separate company under the same ownership, which I was not told about beforehand, and the company also does radon mitigation. If I had known this I would have asked for a company that only does testing.

Jerry was our inspector and did an excellent job of reviewing all the details of the inspection and pointing out any concerns we should have.

Friendly on the phone, fairly easy to set up appointment (initially). Jerry did home inspection. Nice guy and seemed very thorough. He pointed out new things that I hadn't noticed and I pointed out a few things he didn't notice. The problem came with the radon tests. There were a few snags in setting up the equipment due to scheduling and confirming the appointment. They were finally able to get in and set up radon equipment (requires 48 hrs. of sampling). I appreciated that they were able to get in and out with the radon eventually. I did not appreciate the lack of concern or responsibility when I called to remind them and also spoke to the technician on site to please confirm with the seller's agent about appts. I was the one footing the bill so I would have appreciated them taking time to call to confirm things. In summary, home inspection was good but some of the office work/appt. scheduling needs to be improved.

We were very satisfied with Kustom Home Inspection. Ken and Jerry both came out to do the inspection, which lasted approximately 2-1/2 hours. They were very thorough in their checks, and my husband was able to follow them around as they went, and they explained everything they were doing at that time. Both were super friendly, and more than happy to answer every little question we had. Especially because this house has a well and septic, and we have been city-dwellers our entire lives, we didn't know anything about it, but Ken explained everything to make it easy to understand. We also received a very helpful book that details every home system, and how they work; a nice touch. Later that evening, they emailed us a detailed inspection report, complete with photos of some of the documented items. I would use them again, and would recommend this company to anyone that was looking for a home inspector.

The Harringtons were there right on time (if not early) and ready for business immediately. They began by checking to make sure that they had access to all major portions of the house. After having us sign the liability acknowledgement forms and explaining our options for recourse if there are problems later (which we found to be a very professional way to begin the process), we started with an inspection of the exterior. Then we moved inside starting with the attic and progressed down through to the basement. Ken Sr took plenty of time to explain both positives and negatives of the home. Where there were potential issues, he explained the remedies available and costs associated. Luckily, it started to rain a bit when we moved to the interior so we could see areas where some of the gutters and siding seals were less adequate. They took all the notes and pictures so all we had to do was listen. It was a very easy process to follow. I have all positive things to say about the Kens.

Ken and Kustom Home Inspection performed a detailed and professional inspection of the home we recently purchased. Ken was honest, thorough, professional, provided us with more than enough information to answer our questions and concerns, and even suggested remedies to the problems he found. Ken has my full endorsement, and I would recommend him to my family and friends.

It was an excellent experience from start to finish. Ken was patient and explained the details of the inspection over the phone. Ken and Jerry arrived early and had already started reviewing the exterior of the unit before I arrived. They completed the inspection in an efficient, but thorough manner, and explained everything as they did it. I received a report within a couple hours detailing every finding. I could not be more pleased with their services.

Jerry Landon was the inspector. Jerry actually arrived 30 minutes ahead of schedule. He was very thorough, took his time checking everything out from top to bottom, inside and out. He had plenty of equipment to test appliances for heating/cooling, checked out the electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc. The only thing he could not check was the A/C, because it was only 44 degrees outside. He spent almost 3 hours with me checking out the property. He then sent me a fully detailed report explaining every system he tested, noting any deficiencies, and included plenty of pictures. The only thing I was disappointed with was the $55 charge for a "termite inspection." Being a log home, with obvious insect damage, I didn't need him to verify that I had a problem. But, because I thought they could verify whether it was termites or other insects, I agreed to pay the fee. Unfortunately, Jerry told me that, because he could not see the insects, he could not determine whether it was termites or not.

They were able to quickly schedule the service, arrived on time, discussed the issues with me and physically showed me some of the areas of concern. Later in the day I received a report with pictures detailing all of their findings. I found them to be very helpful, professional and personal. I would recommend them highly.

I cannot say enough about how wonderful Ken is! He was able to do our inspection within three days of my first call to him. He was early to the appointment and took the time to help us understand all he was doing. He pointed out things about our new home that we never would have noticed, took digital pictures to document them and gave us a wonderful and complete report the day he finished. He showed us how to maintain our furnace, water heater and sump pump, and how to turn off our water, electricity and gas in case of an emergency. I highly recommend Ken and his company!
