The estimator came out on time as promised, and and went into a good amount of detail regarding what was happening and how they would repair it. Essentially, after replacing the affected sheathing and other wood, they also replaced flashing and then laid down a rubber underlayment (Owens Corning Weather-Lock, I think) and replaced the shingles. They also replaced the gutter as stated, running water away from this corner and adding a second downspout. Work was done on time and to the promised spec. So far, I have not seen any issues with ice damming and the resultant leakage. Workers cleaned up the work area, and everything was done as estimated. Price-wise, they were the best value of the three estimates received. One estimate was $400 lower but was not as thorough and the estimator could not readily explain how what they would do would address the issue. Another estimate was about $200 higher but did not provide any discernible advantage over the work Baker did.
Description of Work: Our house has a room addition off the back of it. The original house roof slopes down towards the back and the room addtion has its roof with a perpendicular peak coming out from the original roof. This created a valley that ends into the gutter and downspout. About 2 years after the room was added, snow would back up at the gutter / downspout, causing ice damming and leakage inside the room. If I could keep the snow from backing up then it would be OK, but as you might suspect this was a hit or miss proposition. After 12 years, this caused some of the wood on the eave and the sheathing to rot. I called Baker to: - Fix the damaged wood - Come up with a solution that would eliminate the ice damming - Replace the gutter and downspout so it drained away from the valley

It was all much easier than I thought a roof replacement would be! Very shortly after requesting an estimate from the J. F. Baker website, I received an email from Theresa saying that Brad Baker would be over to look at our house, and he was there exactly on time. He was interesting to talk to, and informative about everything regarding roof replacements that I wanted to know. He left me with some brochures to look at, and encouraged me to call with any more questions, or if I wanted advice and suggestions about the shingle type and color. A couple of days later, I received from him a detailed, yet easy-to-understand estimate of all the work that would be required, plus several options we might want, along with the extra cost for each one. About three weeks after accepting the estimate, Theresa scheduled the job, and the work crew arrived right on time that morning. They were very pleasant as we left the house, the foreman explaining the benefits of the shingle style, and assuring us we would like the results of their work - and we did! When we got back home later that day, except for the beautiful look of our new roof, we couldn't even tell anyone had been there; the yard was all cleaned up. The next day, two workers came to do the painting of the vent pipes, and then it was all complete. The roofers left an extra box of matching shingles in case of any future repairs, and the Perma Flow gutter guard system works very well. There were no complications or surprises. Everyone was courteous and reliable as could be. And everything looks so nice.
Description of Work: They tore off the two layers of existing shingles, and applied ice and snow barriers to the eaves, and new Certainteed dimensional fiberglass shingles over a felt base. They also caulked and painted the vent pipes, and installed new flanges and flashings where they were needed, including ice dam flashing at the eaves, plus added a set of new roof louvers. The gutters and downspouts were also all replaced, and the Perma Flow gutter guard system was installed.

Excellent value for price. I made very clear I was more interested in done right w/ fair price than done cheap. I had their specs reviewed by a construction manager I know; He was impressed. (previous roof had failed after only 16 years and company out of business so I was being extra careful.) What I appreciated most was that in choosing the vent improvements, he considered what was best in the long run for my house. Ridge vents are very popular, but they would not have worked on a hip-roofed house w/ many changes of direction and height along the roof line. That he bothered to figure that out rather than put in ridge vents because they are the current norm impressed me and that made my decision.
Description of Work: Remove 2 layers old roof, remove chimney for wood stove and close opening, replace existing hat vents and add 5 new ones, install rain guard at all ridges and edges, replace all valleys w/ w-shaped, valley flashing, install new fiberglass shingles; white energy star.

I just signed up for Angie's List. Baker Roofing did a very good job, and I am very happy. What I really liked about them is Brad Baker came out. I told him what I wanted, and in 2 days he gave me a quote, the way I wanted it quoted, with the shingles I requested. In the quote, he provided me with 3 different types of shingles that have been used in the past in my neighborhood. Shingles which would look good on my house. They completed the job in one day. I was out taking pictures, and they did a good job cleaning up. They answered all my questions about the weather shield under the shingles. I couldn't give them enough praise! Baker Roofing has been working in the Columbus area about 30 years. The sad part of the story is that there is another brother, from the family business, named Baker. Not knowing they were related, I called him for a quote. Two weeks later I called him asking for the quote. He said he was in the neighborhood, and would come right over. I was standing in my garage and saw him pull up at my neighbors house. When he saw me, he came over to my house. He said he had measured the wrong house! I thought; this is something that would go askew! The Baker Roofing company I used was not the lowest quote I had.
Description of Work: I used Baker Roofing last June for a new roof. They completely tore off the old roof, and completely installed a new roof.

We needed a new roof and wanted to add ice dam protection. They gave us a good price for a quality product. They also told us their workers had to be trained and certified by the manufacturer of the roofing materials, which I think is a very good thing. The owner of the company was always available to answer any questions I had prior to signing the contract. I had many questions since this was a big project and I wanted to make sure we chose the roofing material we would be happy with for a long time. They called me a few days before work began to ask me to park my car on the street during the days they would work so I could come and go without being blocked in my garage. They showed up on time the morning that they had told me work would begin. Several workers were in the crew and they started tearing off the old roof right away. Between our house and attached garage, we had 4,000 sq. ft. of roofing to be removed and replaced. This was going to be a 2-day job. Since it rains often in Columbus, I asked them what would happen if they tear off the entire roof and the next day it rains before they get the new one on. They said they only tear off as much as they know they can replace that same day. Nothing would be exposed to the elements if it were to rain overnight. They worked until it was too dark to see. They cleaned up every single piece of old roofing debris from the yard before they went home for the day. They do make sure that some members of the roofing crew speak English so I could communicate with them. A day after the job was completed, the supervisor came out to walk around and take a look, check for any debris they may have missed, and pick up surplus roofing materials. He also chatted with me to answer any questions I may have had and make sure I was happy with the work. Everyone in the company made this a very smooth transition for us.

I have used this company before for roof repair as well as gutter cleaning. They have always done a superior job and this is true for this particular service call. A wind/rain storm tore several tiles from our roof recently. I called J.F. Baker's and asked for them to inspect the roof for damages. Brad Baker responded in a timely manner. After he assessed the damage, he bought the necessary amount of new tiles and replaced them within 2 days. This is a family owned company and I feel totally confident in their expertise and business ethics. When it's time for a roof replacement, I'll call them.

They did my house years ago so I had them come back to do my rental. They had all Americans working for them before but this time there was not a single guy that spoke English. Their price wasn’t real cheap. They have a good reputation and I think they did a good job. Usually they have a foreman, but this time there wasn’t anyone that could understand me. The roof looks fine but I don’t know if I would call them again. They had a number of people working and got it done right away. They showed up when they were supposed to and they charged what they said they would.

Called them for an estimate about 2 weeks ago. Said they would send someone out to check it out and then mail the estimate to me. I received a letter in the mail from them today finally and thought it was the estimate. Well no estimate, but a letter telling me they don't have the time to look at our roof. What about my time ? Why didn't they tell me that to begin with or at least call and tell me over the phone? You can call them for an estimate, but don't count on them showing up!

The process went very well . I was given a very detailed written description of the work to be done on the typed estimate. The estimate listed a number of contingencies depending upon what was found under the old, original roof after it was removed. The work was done just the way it was said that it would be, and in the time frame (2 days) that I was told that it would take. Fortunately for me, there was a great deal of "record setting" rain for the rest of the month after the job was complete, a good "test", and there were no leaks. The price was very copetitive with other estimates. I am very satisfied , and would definitely use this company again, and would recommend them highly.

They are very competent and timely. Their pricing is reasonable and the service is good. They are very prompt and I highly recommend them and in fact, I have recommended them to others too. I have an estimate from them for some gutter work that has to be done at my mother?s house. So they are going to replace the gutters and it?s not going to be a big project. They have also done some roofing work on her home about 3 to 4 years ago. We had a hailstorm and I have got an estimate from them to get the roof done on my home. I will use their services whenever I decide to get the work done. They are very good too.

Our home has a flat rubber roof, much like a commercial building, and it was in need of some repair. We removed a greenhouse window area and added an overhang; we also removed an old dryer vent, an old kitchen fan vent, and an old bathroom vent from the roof; and we had some odd places on the roof that we wanted to close with metal flashing with vents. Baker made all of the repairs needed to the roof, installed ne roofing over our new overhang, finished our removed vent holes, and replaced all of our diverters with much better aluminum diverters (flashed on both sides) and added 2 new diverters to the roof. I was very pleased with the way the metal work and roofing were completed, they are very good at what they do.
Description of Work: 1.) Clean membrane, furnish and install 60 lin. Ft. of 6” wide rubber flashing at cracked lap sealant at flashing edges. 2.) Furnish and install new insulation, membrane and metal edging where glass is removed by others. 3.) Repair membrane where soft plywood is replaced by others (40 sq. ft.). 4.) Furnish and install reinforced membrane at wall of addition on center roof. 5.) Furnish and install 30 sq. ft. of vent flashing. 6.) Re-caulk chimney and wall counter flashings with urethane. 7.) Remove existing water diverters and furnish and install 40 lin. Ft. of new diverters with 6” rubber flashing on both sides. 8.) Furnish and install 25 lin. Ft. of 6” rubber flashing over membrane seams on upper addition roof. 9.) Repair animal holes in two (2) areas on upper addition roof. 10.) Furnish and install new metal and rubber flashings to close off roof overhang at lower roof.

Great company to work with. They were my third estimate and my husband and I were glad we called them. Punctual, and efficient we couldn't ask for a better experience. When I faxed the contract in to them I wasn't sure the best color shingle for our house. I was given a list of houses in our area and from that my husband and I were able to pick a good color (Burnt Sienna). I faxed the contract on a Friday, the following Monday I received a phone call at work to schedule the roof to be installed that Tuesday. Talk about service ! Tuesday morning I had one phone call to ask about our outdated antenna, which I agreed for them to remove. My husband drove by the house at 1:30 and they were gone. The new roof was on, no debris, no nothing. One minor complaint, I would have liked for them to call me at work when they were done. Also, we were charged $120 for plywood replacement. This was a surprise to me on the bill, as no-one has contacted me about that. Overall our experience was great. We were able to get the upgraded multidimensional shingle for just under what our insurance said they would pay. We are very happy with our new roof.

They had to install a new roof on, and I think they had to go down to the plywood. There were two levels of shingles on, and we had to take the old roof out and put a new roof on. We had told them that we needed additional vents, and they had installed that for us. Things had gone well, and they seemed to be straightforward with me. They had a Mexican crew, and said they used them because they were hard workers.

Another provider had told me that I had to do the ventilation system and other things. I had gotten estimates up to $13000, but Baker?s Sons charged me only $6000. They told me that there was no moisture in the attic and that there was no need to do anything with the ventilation system. They were honest in estimating the job. They arrived when they said they would, and they did the job when they said they would. They worked right after a hurricane, and everybody had roof damage. They had already talked to me and agreed to do the roof. They did not put me off to repair the roof damage, but honored their contract. They had it all done in one day?s time, and they cleaned up after themselves. They sent sufficient help. I was very pleased with everything about them. The roof looks good, and I have had no problems with it. I didn?t have to call them back out to have them fix anything or anything like that.

Brad Baker came out promptly once I called his company for an estimate. He knew roofing extremely well, and shortly after I received a clear detailed bid that only needed small revisions before I signed and returned it. Rain through much of May and June of 2009 is what delayed the job till late June, 2009. In the meantime, I called the company with technical questions and they were fully answered. The crew of about 11 was efficient, clean and did all the main roofing in one day! The metals expert (as planned) came by the next day to do further caulking, painting, etc. There was one small detail with the downspouts into the lower front roof that he also fixed. Mitch, the supervisor really knew his stuff well, too. The entire job went great. I paid in full on completion. I would most definitely use this company again.
Description of Work: New Shingle Roof: Tear-Off-removed all existing shingle roofing from house, rear bay, and shed to solid wood sheathing. No defective lumber was found. Furnished and applied 36'' wide ice and snow barrier underlayment on all eaves and at all valleys. Furnished and nailed #15 felt base sheet to sheathing. Roofed all areas noted above over base sheet with Certainteed 30 year Landmark dimensional Algae Resistant fiberglass shingles-``Resawn Shake'' color. (There were 4 nails per shingle.) The job included all new prefinished 20'' roof valley with one inch (1'') rib, flanges around soil stacks, 40# terne metal chimney flashings complete and metal step flashings at walls as needed. The chimney flashings and soil stacks were caulked, and the same painted with one (1) coat of metal paint. Furnished and installed sixty-five ft. (65') of shingle vent II ridge vent system and filled in existing louver openings. Replaced existing power fan. Furnished and installed brown prefinished aluminum drip edging above gutter edge. Re-set existing gutter screen. Omitted previous downspouts above lower front roof. All roofing debris were hauled away. Note: J. F.
