Received 4 bids for kitchen & 2nd bath work during Sept & Oct 2012. Selected Home Remedies. Good reviews and reasonable bid proposal for work to be done. Work started 3 days after Christmas & completed on 1/9/13. Removed dropped ceiling & flurescent lighting. Rebuilt the soffits. Provided several types of beadboard (1x4's) for us to select from. Installed the beadboard ceiling, can lighting, pendent lighting. Used plastic drop clothes to contain dust & dirt - cleaned up at the end of every day. Removed the countertop in the second bath, built a 4" platform to raise the vanity, reinstalled the vanity, redid molding. After the granite company installed the new top, new plumbing was installed. Scott Preston was the individual that did the estimate & all of the remodeling. He was excellent to deal with - explaining what he was doing & answering any & all questions that we had. Again, he was very good to deal with & I would use Home Remedies for future remodeling.
Description of Work: Removed soffit height ceiling w/flurescent lighting in kitchen. Refinished a soffit around the kitchen (3 sides). Installed beadboard ceiling w/can lighting & pendent lighting over the island. Removed vanity top in second bath, raised vanity on a 4" platform, installed new faucets after a new granite top was installed.

I had Doug quote a job for me, which he did, before I closed on my house. I had a 203k loan which allowed me to build the costs of repairs into my mortgage. I had to submit significant amounts of paperwork and the renovation portion of my loan was approved on the premise that he would be doing the work. A week after closing, he called to say he wouldn't be doing the work because he'd found a bigger job, leaving me in a terrible position. He was incredibly rude on the phone. I wouldn't recommend Doug to my worst enemy.
Description of Work: Doug did not perform any of the services he quoted.

Response from HOME REMEDIES
Home Remedies has been working with the finance companies and home owners with the 203K programs for several years and understand the process. We had tried to contact Member on a few occasion's to schedule time for her project, we receive a call from her three to four weeks later. Home Remedies is very fortunate to have great clients and a great reputation. That being said, we schedule more than a month out and when Member called, we were booking jobs to far out for her. We are very sorry she could not wait and wish her the best with her project.

The job was completed on time for the quoted price. Despite being a relatively messy job they did a good job keeping the area clean. The guys did a great job and I would definitely hire again in the future.

Overall project(s) have gone very well. We will definitely work with Home Remedies in the future.
Description of Work: We have worked with Home Remedies on several occasions and have been completely satisfied each time. This last project included demolition, drywall, lighting replacement/installation, painting and building of a shelving unit. They are consistently fair and trustworthy. Home Remedies will continue to be our go-to partner for these types of projects...and more. Great to work with - and super personalities, pleasant to have around!

I had a GREAT experience with Home Remedies. Doug Schifer came out quickly and offered a very reasonable quote. His co-worker, Scott Preston, scheduled the job and subsequent visits over 7-10 days to get a few drywall repairs and some trim work done. He also helped patch a spot on my kitchen ceiling that had a ?stomp finish?. I didn?t want to scrape it all down but, as promised, the repair is a very close match. Always on time, they cleaned up after the job and you could see the care they placed on doing a good job. What more could anyone ask? 10 outta 10, and for a modest price! I just wish I could have these guys for work I need done at my other house in Cincinnati.
Description of Work: I needed a "stomp" finish repaired in my kitchen because some knucklehead put his foot partially through the ceiling. I also had front and kitchen entry doors installed previously but getting the finish trim and some damaged drywall done was problematic and needed more then a weekend do-it-yourselfer.

I recently purchased a 1940's duplex in need of work. I found Home Remedies on Angie's List under "plaster repair" and gave them a call. Doug showed up to give an estimate and during conversation, I learned that he was a licensed contractor and could perform most of the work I needed done. I went ahead and got estimates on other work and was pleased to find that Home Remedies' quote was less than the others - my one stop shop! Doug and Scott were fantstic to work with. I can't stress this enough. They took change orders without skipping a beat (and I had quite a few). They were personable, professional and incredibly helpful throughout the process. Their experience was evident both in the quality of work and in the attention to cost. They did a GREAT job, touched about every corner of the place, got done on schedule and saved me quite a bit of money. The units look fantastic and everything works again. I have worked with alot of contractors and have never had such a pleasant experience. They kept my stress level down through humor - they are "no problem" kind of guys. I highly recommend them and will hire them again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Plaster repair, painting, plumbing and electrical fixes, hung lights, tile repair, hung towel bars, washer/dryer hook ups, tightened/straightened/repaired (variety of loose knobs, handles, toliet parts, gutter spikes), installed dishwasher/stove/range hood, repaired buckled garage door, ripped up old carpet and hauled away debris.

We have used Doug and Scott in the past on at least 3 occasions (exposed brick chimney, repaired drywall/plaster in kitchen ceiling, repaired storm door). They are awesome to work with. They are responsive and reasonably priced. We call them first when we have jobs to do in our 1890's house.<3 Doug and Scott!

Home Remedies first came to the house and gave us an estimate of the cost. They gave us a date when they could start and they started within a day of the agreed upon time. They removed the old linoleum from the bathroom and replaced it with the ceramic tile. They also installed the ceramic baseboards. In order to installed the tile properly they had to remove the sink and commode. When they completed installing the floor they reinstalled the sink and commode. The end result is that the bathroom looks great. They did a great job on the floor and all the plumbing was perfectly reinstalled (i.e. it works). In addition when they finished they cleaned the mess and removed the debris. They removed the build-in shelves from the hallway where the cellar door is located and stripped the wall paper. There was some mold on the walls so they treated it with bleach. They installed dry wall on the ceiling and walls and they also installed cam lights in the ceiling. In order to install the lights they had to re-wire the area. When they finished the walls and ceiling they removed the old cellar door. Because of the size of the area where the cellar door was they had to customize/design a new cellar door instead of just installing a pre-fabricated door. After installing the new cellar door they put engineered wood on the floor. The end result was amazing. The cellar door is much sturdier that the previous door and looks wonderful. It matches the other wood in the hallway and makes the area, though small, much more attractive. When they finished installing the drywall they sanded it made it ready to paint, which we decided to do ourselves. Upon completion of the work all the debris was removed, and the area cleaned. The work was superb! Best of all the price was what we originally agreed upon! This is our third job with Home Remedies and we have another job planned for later this year.
Description of Work: Linoleum flooring was removed and replaced with ceramic tile on the floor in our second bathroom. In addition a ceramic tile baseboard was installed. Our house is 120 years old and the "cellar" door needed to be replaced. The door was originally outside when the house was build but when the former owners remodeled the house the cellar door was inclosed inside the house. The door was made of plywood and had indoor/outdoor carpeting. The area had wallpaper and built-in shelves. Home Remedies, put in a new cellar door, custom design, which was much sturdier and covered it with engineered wood flooring that closely matched the flooring in the adjoining areas. In addition Home Remedies removed the wall paper and built-in shelves and put up drywall on the walls and ceiling. They installed cam lights, which required re-wiring the area.

The project went better than expected. Doug's home inspecting experience proved invaluable for the preparation to sell. Thanks to his prompt response and attention to detail while I was away, I was able to list my property in excellent shape and sell within a month. I fully give Doug all credit for getting my house in such great shape and thanks to his efforts I sold promptly. I would recommend his services to any person looking for a reliable, trustworthy and knowledgable home contractor. Definately, money spent wisely for this service.
Description of Work: I have used Doug and Scott for many projects over the years. In late June I decided to list my home for sale. I called Doug and asked him to help me "spruce up" the house, lawn and basement in preparation to sell. I found Doug to be invaluable in his advice and followed his suggestions. He went over the property, performed all necessary indoor repairs, repainted as needed and checked all systems. Outdoors, he again repainted as necessary, performed all landscaping tasks and repaired the outdoor fencing. I was traveling at the time and relied on him completely to take care my property needs. An unexpected need for a new furnace cropped up and Doug graciously took care of contacting heating contractors for me and obtained estimates.

I got home at 4 from an appointment and he had already fixed it and had left. I have always had prompt and reliable service from both Doug and Scott and will continue to use their services for my handyman or remodeling needs. I can trust that things will always be done in good time, less cost than others and superior in quality.
Description of Work: I called Scott at around noon to tell him that my toilet was leaking, causing more water usage. He was already on his way to Lowe's for something else so he said he would get the parts i needed to fix the toilet and be over within a couple of hours.

Contacted company to obtain an estimate for repairs due to a bit of a mystery leak in my home. Granted, in my estimate request I asked to be contacted if they were interested and available, so they may not been either and were simply following my request. In my experience, most contractors and companies at least respond to tell you that, though.

Doug came out and rescued me from my homeowner in over his head drywall experiment. I decided to take on skim coating some roughed up drywall after removing wallpaper. Was able to get things mostly smoothed out but two walls were just beyond my abilities. Took getting frustrated and putting a foot through one wall before I realized I needed help. Doug came out and repaired the hole and smoothed it out with skim coat. Got the work done in about a week and did a great job. The price was quite cheap for what I definitely learned is a difficult and frustrating task. I really appreciate how clean he kept the sanding as well. I know from experience how much of a mess it can make and I couldn't even tell he had been sanding.

Doug came out to give estimate on work to be done and Scott came out to look things over. Estimate was very reasonable. Started in Nov 2011. The last check written mid Feb. It was just Scott which was fine because he has to be one of the hardest working men I have ever known next to my own father. It wasn't an easy remodel since it was a retro fit for the cabinets. So he had the kitchen demo which included walls, ceiling and floor. The cabinets and sink had already been removed. He removed the lowered ceiling in the kitchen, put in recessed lighting, finished the ceiling that extended into the next room with texture with a layer of drywall to cover that. Installed some insulation to outside walls. Drywall looked perfect. He also hung a dining room light and pendent lights. He tiled the floor with porcelain, the walls with tile. Had someone else install the granite. He was very helpful in finding appliance replacements, finding me the perfect fridge. He installed the microwave in minutes. Did a little extra work in replacing the kitchen door to garage and installing another step to sun room. Always kept me on top of what his schedule was and always showed up when he was supposed to. Worked long hours and remained very cheerful through out the whole time. Obviously loves his work

A+++ Doug came to our home to provide us with a quotation for the repair of our kitchen ceiling that was damaged from a leaky toilet above. We had already had another contractor come to provide us with a quote and based upon the price and description of work that would be required, we decided to go with Home Remedies. It was about 1/3 of the price we were quoted by someone else. Scott arrived the next day to begin the drywall patch on the ceiling which was a plaster ceiling with drywall on top of it. He also repaired the wall and scraped the window frame that was damaged and bubbled from the water damage. The process took about 3 days total with drying and sanding times. We also had Scott remove the plaster from the chimney in our kitchen to expose the old brick chimney. We had done this job in our living room so we knew it was a messy job. Scott did the work quickly, cleaned up the mess and voila we now have a great looking brick feature in our kitchen. There were 2 old pipes that were exposed and Doug can in and patched these with old brick at no additional charge. It looks like a patch but the bricks are old and it looks so much better than the pipe holes. Just adds character to the chimney as far as we are concerned. Scott also filled in a gap along the brick wall in our living room giving our room a more finished look. Our home is over a 100 years old so we were very glad to know that both Doug and Scott had experience working with older homes. They were super friendly, professional and did a good job keeping the dust and mess to a minimum and cleaning up when they were finished. The did the work in a timely manner and were always there when they said they would be here. We were happy that they stuck to their original quote and even did the chimney patch at no additional charge. We asked lots of questions and they were very happy to answer our questions. We're sure we will have many more projects on the horizon and will DEFINITELY contact Home Remedies again!
Description of Work: Project 1: Patched and Re-Drywalled a 2 x 3 section of our kitchen ceiling (damaged from a leak). Repaired Wall and Scraped Window Trim that was damaged from the leak. Project 2: Removed Plaster from Interior Chimney in our Kitchen and patched 2 areas of the chimney where stove pipes were located. Started 1-2 weeks behind but I was in no hurry. Once job was underway, Scott and Doug pretty much worked unsupervised at their own pace and contacted me via phone / text when questions arose. They were responsive to change orders and provided quick / reasonable pricing when unexpected issues arose. There were times where I could tell they were working other jobs when there was unfinished work on my job but overall this did not bother me because i was on no specific timeframe. Overall they finished the job in good time (8 weeks). I posted pictures of a prior job they did for me back in may. please refer to those for a good example of the quality of work. already planning to have them do another job for me in a few months.
Description of Work: Scott and Doug completed their 3rd major renovation project for me. They take pride in their work and are easy to work with. They are very responsible and do not have to be micro managed. Work performed was major kitchen renovation, bathroom, drywalling and painting, minor electrical, minor plumbing, refinishing hardwood floors, installation of new doors / door hardware. They pretty much can do it all. I read the "F" grade given by the gentleman in August. Having worked with other contractors I understand his frustration and to be honest, this job was also bumped a week or two to begin with. I'm sure it's a situation Scott and Doug will learn from. But overall having to wait a few weeks to work with them was well worth it due to the quality of work and their ability to take initiative.

This is the 2nd time we contracted with Home Remedies and they pulled through again. We had a tight deadline -- less than a week - to complete this job and they finished well before our deadline. The end product was great, and Doug was very responsive whenever we called him to check status. He also helped us out quite a bit by cleaning up after all the work was completed (and drywall dust can be a challenge to get under control.) I would recommend Home Remedies highly and we definitely plan to use them again.

I have used Doug as a handyman for a number of years as have some friends. I have never had any problems with him or the quality of his work. In the particular job last October, I left to go away to a wedding in NY state and trusted them to do the job. when I returned 4 days later the work was complete and beautiful. I have also used Doug for smaller problems around the house and he always has good ideas for solving them. In general you will find that the cost of getting work done with Doug and Scott is less than with other companies and I would trust Doug with any job.
Description of Work: I had been trying to remove the wallpaper in my dining room and found that what was under it was not typical drywall and that I was messing up the wall with what I was doing. I hired Doug and Scott to a) remove the rest of the wallpaper and smooth and then paint the walls in the dining room b) paint the chair rail and replace the baseboards, c) paint the walls in the living room and d) replace the baseboards in the LR.
