Les came out to quote the work. He did a great job and provided a detailed quote rather quickly. Once we signed the contract, the communication could have been better, but was not too bad. There were a few issues with the crew early in the process. Within the first week of the project, I came home to a total mess in my home and nobody left onsite. Workers had left messes in both the downstairs and master bathrooms. I immediately called Les and Mike to complain and they were certainly apologetic. After that, their crews were certainly more cautious to clean up there areas and stay where they were supposed to be. Mike did a good job of working around a few issues to keep the ceiling height as tall as possible. Overall, the quality of their work is ok (probably better than most DIY'ers), but was certainly not up to par with a home builder, etc... It think that the space turned out fine for a playroom, but I would not trust them to be doing any intricate finish work such as cabinetry, etc... The paint, baseboards and trim work looks good from across the room, but upon close inspection, you can see that they struggled with it. My overall impression is that Gates is a reputable company. They seem to care about their work, and are not going to take you for your money, but their workers are not overly skilled either. If their quote is significantly less and the work is relatively simple, then they may be worth selecting. However, if intricate workmanship and clean lines is necessary for the work, I'd go elsewhere.

Gates Home Improvement is a totally professional organization. The workers were skilled, prompt, and courteous throughout the job. Mike Gates came by every other day (sometimes, more) to inspect the job and talk with us; his main goals were to do the job well and make us happy and satisfied. If we had questions or concerns about something, all we had to do is mention it to Mike and it was solved. My husband and I were very satisfied with the project. Now, all I have to do is move in and enjoy my new studio! We highly recommend Gates to anyone who values great work!

From the day I purchased the Angie's List Deal/coupon, I have heard from Gates on a regular and timely basis, I have been able to reach them when I need, they've been attentive to me and to detail, provided answers to my questions promptly and thoroughly. The work they are doing seems top-notch to me and I'm very happy with the progress.

To start, I have to say that this is a pretty consistant process for Gates. Reading past reviews before having Les come in to do the quote set an expectation for me and I wasn't disappointed. You can pretty much bank on the fact that the process will follow as others have laid out in previous reviews. After Les came over and listened to what I want to have him quote, he worked up a basic layout and contract. Then it was just a matter of getting on the schedule. They gave me a rough estimate of when that would be and they started pretty close to the estimated date. During the demolition phase, I had only one complaint; when they tore down the existing drop ceiling, they didn't cover the gym equipment I had gathered up in the center of the room. When I complained, they pointed out that in the contract it was my responsibility to cover it. So my fault but it seemed like common sense not to proceed with out saying something. Especially when my wife was upstairs at the time. To their credit, they helped clean it up and then covered it for me until the job was finished. The rest of the process went smooth. There was some back and forth conversations about minor design changes and the team was pretty cooperative in making sure we were satisfied with the finished product. I waited to do any type of review to see how satisfied I was after using the space for some months. I have to say that I am still satisfied with the work and wouldn't hesitate to have them back.

They were punctual, they did a very good job and they took the time to walk me through everything that they could do with the space. They provided me with a bunch of different options and within their quote; they actually outlined the cost for each different aspect of the basement, so it wasn’t just one quote, but it was a quote that was broken down and talked about for like, what dollars would be applied to what different work they were doing. They were very thorough.

They were responsive in coming out. They were timely in giving me the quote. They were very professional in decisions. I just went with the other guy because he offered to do extra things for me. I would give them the opportunity to give me a quote again in the future.

An economical job, and in large measure we're pleased. There were some details that could have been a little better, particularly painting, which could have used another touch-up coat. Another thing was all the lightbulbs they installed failed within days of the job being complete, which was weird...not a big deal, but just a minor inconvenience.

They did an absolutely wonderful job. They did what they said they were going to do. They were punctual. They were clean. They were very easy to work with. The result is a wonderful basement. He was exactly n the estimate. I would hire them to do any room in my house. The price was reasonable. I felt our money was used wisely. He was very honest. He used to inform if he had to go over the price.

We bought the big deal offered by Gates for $5000. Mr . Gates came over and took us through the process and to take accurate measurements. Les called a few days later and let us know how much we would be paying additional as our bathroom was a bit bigger than the square footage offered in the Big deal. We also decided to save some money and had new drywall hung as we had Plaster walls; house was built in 1942. We bought all of the supplies (tile, grout, vanity, paint, mirror, accessories) ourselves to ensure we were pleased with what was used. Gates didn't mind us doing this and it was nice for them to have the supplies already here. The only thing we didn't buy was the tub and the glass shower door. When we asked if they would install the glass shower door (not part of the big deal) then didnt' hesitate. The entire remodel took a total of 3 weeks and were there everyday. They cleaned up and the mess was minimal. I must say I have the nicest bathroom in the neighborhood and very pleased with their work!

They did great. They were always punctual & kept good communication. The work was done completely to our satisfaction & in a timely manner.

They had the same crew each day, so you didn't have different people coming into your house everyday. All of the sub-contracted work was family related. They were on time at 8 A.M. everyday. They were out of the house at a reasonable time. They cleaned up after themselves. They protected my floor. They also did extra stuff for me.

Gates Home Improvement took my money and never did any of the work for me.

The salesperson for Gates responded immediately (Les) after we signed up for the Big Deal. He came out walked around our basement, asked what we wanted and then drew up plans to share with us. This was done very professionally and timely. The tear down work begin in early September. When the foundation problems showed up - Les again got right on it. He found a supplier for the steel beams and had them delivered. The worker from Gates and the owner worked on the installation and sealing. The next step took quite a while - the owner submitted the plans to our city's building department and then we had to wait over 3 weeks for the approval. This took us into late October. The remainder of the work was completed very slowly - some days someone would work for several hours then no one would come for a couple days. Other days a person would come in for an hour then leave. The workers for the most part did not clean up after themselves - leaving tools, nails, materials all over the basement, the steps and the garage. This went on for over 4 weeks. During this time we still needed to go to the basement for laundry - trying not to fall on the materials left around. We could not use the garage due to the mess for over a month. We finally had a worker at the end who cleaned up after himself - it was a breath of fresh air! The job was completed in early December - 3 months after it began. All of the workers from Gates were courteous and respectful. Overall, the work is good and we are happy with our new basement. They do good work if you can get past the timeframe and the messes.

He was only in our home for about a half hour getting all the measurements he needed to complete the quote and then provided a sketch of the plans a few days later. It probably would have been sooner but we we getting all these quotes the week before christmas so we told him there was no rush.

Gates sends in a sales guy, who's good at talking to people. He works out the design and measurements with you, which he is good at, and he is very personable. Once we had settled on the design and the price, Mike and the subcontractors came over to do the actual work. They were efficient and respectful, and, most outstandingly, were problem solvers. For example, we had a spot where some duct work was going to have to protrude out of a wall and be boxed in by drywall in a way that was an invitation to klonking your head. When I pointed this out, they kind of scratched their heads and said that they didn't think that they were going to be able to do anything about it, but the next day, they had figured out how to tuck the ducting under an i-beam so that the protrusion was gone. I really appreciated that. In all, we were very pleased with their professionalism and their price and we will use them again, when it comes time to do more remodeling. We are satisfied customers.

They were amazing. We had gone through Angie's list big deal; but we had them do some extra stuff. They were extremely professional. They took the time to answer questions about bathroom because they are definitely not my area of expertise. I had a lot of questions about what tile would go by. I asked for their advice on fixtures. They were extremely accommodating. They were really nice to work with. I never felt that I was bothering them unlike with other contractors. We are going to have them again to replace the faucet and children's bathroom.

There was an Angie's List "Big Deal" for an estimate on basement remodeling. I bought it and within a day, Les called and set up an appointment to talk with my partner and I. The day of the appointment, Les was prompt and professional. We explained what we would like and asked his opinion. He was quite knowledgeable on ways to change and improve our basement. Afterwards, Les did a rough draft of the things we discussed and said he would return within a couple of days with a digital copy to confirm the layout. Well, we loved what we saw and agreed to have the company do the job! A short time later, Mike Gates called, made an appointment to meet with us and go over the process of achieving our desired basement makeover. Once the work started, Mike and his crew stayed in constant contact with us, keeping us updated and explaining each step of the process. The crew was polite, trustworthy, and good with hauling out old and used material and keeping the work area clean. Throughout the weeks, the guys where great at adapting to last-minute changes and add-ons that we requested. From start to finish ... moving a wall, hanging drywall, converting a drop ceiling to a permanent one, adding outlets and lighting, installing new doors, a utility sink, and pantry shelves, to painting the entire basement, Gates Home Improvement did an absolutely wonderful job!

They did a great job. Les came out and he gave full measurements of my unfinished basement. He had a lot of good recommendations. Right now I am in the process of trying to decide if I am going to have it done or not. They came out and did a really wonderful job. The drawing that they gave of the basement was outstanding.

The gentleman recommended that we do not waterproof the basement before we finished it. That sealed the deal for us.

It went very well. They were professional, punctual and thorough. They did what they said they were going to do, when they said they were going to do it. I was happy with the results.

The design turned out well and the price was reasonable, but I will probably hold off on the work until next year. I will consider them when it comes time to do the work.

Les came to my house and took all the measurements he needed for the drawing and explained in great detail what work they would do if hired to finish my basement. The drawing looked great and Les came up with a configuration that made a lot of sense. I could not have come up with a better configuration on my own. I was quoted a price of $27,890 to finish about 1400sq ft of my basement (the basement is currently completely unfinished). This would include a rec room area, bedroom, family room area, and installing a complete bathroom. The price covered everything needed to finish the basement, except for the carpeting in the family room, bedroom and rec room area. Pretty good price in my opinion, although I have not had any other quotes to compare it with. I was very impressed with Les and he stayed to answer any questions I had. He didn't pressure me in any way to hire him beyond doing the drawing for me. When I'm ready to finish the basement I will definitely consider using Gates for the job. I'm a very detailed person so I will go through the process of getting at least 2 more bids prior to hiring Gates. I would recommend hiring Gates to friends and family.

That turned out great. I was happy. The workers were pretty efficient and friendly. They got the job done in a quality way. The owner of the company kept in contact. He was very communicative. He didn?t just get the job and then wasn?t seen again. He kept checking on the workers and kept in contact with me which was great.
