This local family-run business was exceptional from beginning to the end, always making us feel like we were the only customer they were serving even if they had 5 to 7 other projects going on in various locations. They demonstrated an intense focus on quality work, timely communications, and customer service—all of which are important qualities we seek out and expect when contracting businesses. Everyone on the team—from the Designer (Les), our Project Manager (Trevor), his brother (Joe), and colleagues—was so friendly, professional, meticulous, and efficient throughout the entirety of the project. The team was always on the “same page” with us and each other, and as a result, we always knew what to expect and when things would get done. Trevor and his team always took the time to answer our questions, consider our point of views, and were able to adapt to any changes to the project plan which may have resulted from our additional requests and added tasks. Their impressive work ethic and dedication to gain our trust and achieve our highest satisfaction were beyond reproach, which resulted in a fantastic transformation of a dull, cold basement space into a beautiful, personalized, multipurpose addition to our home—which now consists of a well-crafted and appointed family entertainment area with a rustic bar, a fitness center, and utility storage room. If you value your hard earned money you shouldn’t hire this company. Gates Basement Finishing will sell you one thing then deliver another. I hired Gates to do some major remodeling work in my home, and I fired Gates about 3 months later. They collected 25% upfront and then want another 25% at the start of the job, which I’ve since learned is a violation of The Home Construction Services act. Nevertheless, I paid them $23,500 in two checks one at Contract signing in August another in September when they stated they were going to begin work. Well technically they did “begin work” they demo-ed everything in a day and then didn’t come back to start actually working for 6 more weeks! At which point according to their contract they were supposed to be nearly finished with ALL work, not just beginning one part of the job. They informed me that rather than being completed in November we were looking at a completion date in February or March! They blamed their delays on everything under the sun, me, my bathroom, the plumber, etc, but what it came down to was a complete and total lack of planning , incompetence and the fact that they simply don’t care about your home or time. After numerous attempts to get my job on track and done correctly and them dismissing me, my wasted time and my concerns I’d finally had enough and let them go altogether. Now I’m left with a construction zone of a home for the holidays with a 4yr old and two dogs and Gates has gone silent on refunding the money they owe us which is close to $18,000 for all the uncompleted work. Now we’re forced to pay for the remaining work out of our daughters healtcare fund so she has a safe home to live in. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT HIRE GATES, there are quality contractors out there who actually care about the work they do and making their customers happy. Gates Basement Finishing isn’t one of them. They just want to steal your money. Save yourself!

We hired Gates to finish two-thirds of our basement and we couldn’t be happier with the results, or the process. We would not hesitate to recommend them to others - it was a very positive experience. We dealt directly with Jeff on a day-to-day basis and he was very easy to work with and extremely diligent, accessible and accommodating. Jeff oversaw everything and did a significant amount of the work himself. Everything that was done, by Jeff and those he brought in, was done with an obvious attention to detail and desire to not only do it right, but do it the best possible way. Work was done at a steady cadence completed each step of the way as promised and when promised. There were no unpleasant surprises and we are very happy with our new finished basement.

Everything went well through signing of our contract and went downhill from there. Mistake on bathroom size caused issues with contracted cabinet size. They wanted to shortcut the resolution vs moving the wall. Several mistakes on contract they wanted us to forgive ( thousands of dollars) yet a 9 weeks job took them over 5 months due to not showing up to work for weeks at a time. If we wanted work done we had to nag the owner daily to get someone to show up. Sales guy and workers told us owner had them working on larger paying job vs finishing our job. Tile installation in bathroom was poor and drywall finishing shows all the mudded areas.

Mike Gates and team did an excellent job, very pleased with the results. They were professional and timely. Also, very helpful at providing design ideas that were attractive but practical.

I called the Gates team when I was searching for a contractor to finish my basement. We met with Les Fearing and was very pleased with his professional approach on all our wishes. The pricing was very fair and we felt very comfortable. Mike Gates and his team did nothing but bend over backwards to please my husband and I with the the changes we kept throwing at them. And they still finished the job within the time they promised. The guys were very polite and courteous throughout the entire project. Everything turned out better than we could ever imagine! I should have reviewed this company sooner. Until recently my issue had been with the cheap faucets(sink), mirror and toilet they installed. They had an allowance in our contract and we were never properly compensated for these items. My husband had to stop them before they started to tile the shower as they did not have the proper backer board installed. They were going to put something up that wasn't waterproof. The thing that takes the cake is we now have to have the floor ripped up and retiled. While having some other work done last week it was discovered the tile floor was never installed properly. This will cost us another 2000.00. I've had only a few bad experiences with providers on the list. Unfortunately, this is a very costly one. Date and exact dollar amounts are estimated as my contract is currently filed away.

They did a FANTASTIC job! They were very responsive. They completed the task in good time. They have a lot of pride in their work and it shows. I am REALLY glad I hired them. Their crew was awesome too. I have gotten a lot of compliments on the finished product. I am very picky about the service I get and I can honestly say I would hire them again in a second. :)

Gates professionalism from the beginning was noticeable. They listened to the ideas we had, offered some suggestions and then let us be a part of each significant milestone and decision of what to do as the project moved along. The speed at which they completed the project was surprising, they showed up on time each day and kept us informed about what would be happening next and approximately when the project would be complete. The finished project surpassed all of our expectations and we would not hesitate to use them again should we need any more remodeling in the future.

Mike was very easy to communicate with. Responding to all questions and needs promptly. Crew was courteous and professional. We love our basement and the extra living space it give us. Will use again for some smaller projects down the road that we are thinking about.

We love our new basement. It was finished as a place for the kids to play. We were not looking for anything fancy. We wanted walls and a ceiling at a fair price and that is what we got with Gates. They had the whole thing done in under 5 weeks. We were provided a plan for the basement by Gates, but as it was being finished and we started to see how the space played out, they were very accommodating to a few changes on the fly. They also happily corrected a few mistakes I noticed along the way (such wrong color outlets). They worked fast and everyone was very pleasant who came in and did work for them. My only complaints a few mistakes in the drywall that were not really noticeable until the paint was up. Mike Gates said they could come back to fix those. We have not followed up on his offer because I felt it was mostly me being picky, and honestly the kids will beat the walls up worse! We have a few other projects that we are considering having them back out to do for us in the future.

Great experience with this company. We had several bids, and decided to go with Gates because of their design plan and cost. The Gates team were great to work with. Prompt, professional, and courteous. We are pleased with the finished product, and we would recommend Gates for any remodeling project. We wish we would have had them quote us on the bathroom remodels, but at the time of the basement project, we didn't think to ask...our mistake. Thanks, Mike and team for a great job.

We were very pleased with the lengthy discussions we had with the team as we were getting started. We had a lot of questions about timing and options. They were really patient with us and answered our many questions. The work was wonderful, and the team was friendly. We love our new basement; and it's been over a year. Our kids play down there almost every day. We would definitely work with Gates again.
