Had no heat, called Favret after looking at Angie's list. Serviceman came that afternoon and did a diagnostic. Told me what was wrong and that the part was very expensive. I inquired "how much" and he said around $800. I said I should get a new furnace. His reply was that it would take about a week to get a new furnace.....the temperatures were to drop to 19 the next day.....I gave the okay for the work to be done. Serviceman came back and installed the part. Again, told me how expensive that part was and that if it were the beginning of the season he would recommend getting a new furnace. This is after the work was done. The furnace was purchased in 1996. He said that "like an old car, it would start needing more maintenance". My problem.....I researched the part, a smart valve, and found it could be purchased locally for around $300. I contacted two different places for the price. I contacted Favret and was told how much it cost to run a business!!! One hour for the diagnostic and one hour to install the new part = $1,183....approximately $590 per hour. Not bad. Not many people make that kind of money. I could understand doubling the cost of the part to make a profit but it was almost tripled the cost of the part. Outrageous.
Description of Work: A diagnostic at a cost of $123 (that is with a 10% Senior Citizen disct.) Labor and part replacement $1,060.

After the Favret tech left, I called another heating and cooling professional who had been in the business for over 20 years. I was extremely lucky to find this other individual because he was a straight shooter and above all HONEST. He told me that I could replace the motor and should be back in business. He took the blower and motor assembly with him. Over night, he cleaned up the blower and purchased a replacement motor at a local HVAC supply house. He came back over the next morning, installed the blower assembly with the new motor on it. It looked like a brand new part. Amazing what a little cleaning, ingenuity and elbow grease will do. Total cost including cleaning the old blower wheel, new motor, installation of the motor to the blower wheel, installation of the blower assembly back into the furnace, reconnecting all wires and testing the unit--- WAIT for it-- $293.00. Afterwards, he also cleaned the evaporator coil for another $60. This greatly improved air flow and the furnace is now working like a charm. Big name HVAC companies like Favret seem to specialize in pronouncing older systems to be "irreparable" or repairable but at a ridiculous cost. They want you to feel that you need to buy a new system. They know you're in a tight spot, especially when it's cold outside and your furnace isn't working. I will not call one of the major HVAC companies again in the future.
Description of Work: Technician removed furnace blower and motor assembly and pronounced it to be repairable but at an astronomical cost of over $1300.00. The technician stated that Lennox furnaces are very costly to replace parts on. He waxed on about how this particular motor was proprietary and the blower would need to be modified to accept a new motor. A new motor would be $845 , I would need a new blower since mine was "frozen" to the old motor and a new motor wouldn't fit anyway, plus labor to install the new parts. All this totaled $1307.50. Sounded hopeless. He recommended that I was better off replacing the furnace and would I like their sales department to give me a call. Feeling helpless at that moment, I agreed to a sales call. On top of that, the tech charged me $222.00 for an hour of his precious time. Does a lawyer even make that much per hour???

When we received your review of our work we went looking for the information. Our files show for this address that our company has not worked there in the recent past. We looked further under your name and found another service call at another address and it must be a rental property or you own two houses. On this service call it describes a similar diagnosis and an honest information of the state of the 30 year old furnace. His quote is not out of line for the work that was described for using the proper manufacturer's parts. Once the amount was reviewed his honest opinion was that the amount for repairs was great enough to think about replacing this very old furnace. He gave you that option. Thank you for using our services and I presume you are satisfied with the repair the other licensed and certified technician did for you and his warranty. Favret Heating and Air Conditioning

I was quite satisfied with their service. The cost was part of the cooling system put in for me a year ago and that was quite expensive. There were no bargains but they charged a fair price.

Upon arriving home on Friday afternoon, realized house was not the usual temp. Thermostat indicated actual temp cooler than preferred setting. Called Favret and they were able to get someone to our home very early the next morning--Saturday. The furnace Issue was a faulty circuit board, which was replaced that morning. There was a problem with getting the correct connector, but the service person was able to improvise to get furnace working properly at that visit. A part was ordered and a second house call (9 days later) was necessary to install the correct "pigtail extension" for the circuit board. The part was listed at "no charge" for the second visit, with a $40 fee for time and labor. It has been 2 months and the furnace is working fine.

The installation of the a/c and humidifier went fine. It wasn't until I started using the humidifier in the fall that the problem began. I noticed that my whole house air cleaner had stopped working. I called Favret's service desk and asked that they send a technician that knew how to work on an air cleaner. They assured me all of their technicians were knowledgeable in that area. When the technician arrived, I asked if he had ever worked on an air cleaner, he said, "no." I asked, should we get someone else? He said he would take a look at it. When we went to the basement, I then noticed a puddle of water under the air cleaner. I said it must be water from the humidifier since it sits above the air cleaner. He checked it out and said it wasn't the humidifier and asked me if I had any ideas?? He's asking me. I told him I would bet any money that it was the humidifier since I had just started using it and that it was the water that probably damaged the air cleaner. He asked me if I wanted a salesperson to come out to give me a quote on a new air cleaner?? I said, no and he said todays charge would be $130.00. I told him to leave and then directed him to the door. I called Favret's office, spoke with John?? He started arguing with me over the phone and said to let the technician back in the house, he would have another look. I refused. I then turned the water off to the humidifier and the water stopped leaking. I called a plumber the next day, he found no water line leaks, but said it was coming from the humidifier and that the humidifier had been installed in the wrong place, on the cold air intake. I now have a humidifier in the wrong place, leaking water down through my air cleaner which is now broken. How do you find a company that will do a good job, not argue with a customer and have trained employees?? Update: I received a telephone call by someone who recognized themselves as an employee working at Favret Heating and Cooling. They apologized for the service I received and said they would send out an experienced technician to my house to fix the problem. I was very pleased, but I had to call and cancel the appointment due to work and asked to reschedule, but no one in the service department had any record of a scheduled service call. I told them someone was to come Tuesday, December 30th at 1:00. They said there was no service call. I asked that the manager call me. No one called so the next day I called the company again and they had no record of anyone scheduled. I spoke with two people. One man said all he had was a record indicating I refused to pay the earlier service call and kicked a technician out of my house. He said there was no record of anyone calling me to set up an additional service call. He made it seem like I was an idiot and I started to believe that maybe someone not from Favret had called. But, less than two minutes after ending the phone call, I get a call back from Favret. They found the person who had apologized for the bad service and scheduled the service call. Isn't that great, they found the person and I'm not an idiot after all. They asked if I wanted to schedule another appointment. No, I am finished with Favret. Getting good service shouldn't be this hard!

The contract is like $300 or $400 a year. The service went fine. We have used them for years. I have not done a lot of comparison for the price, but my impression is it is not necessarily the cheapest, but it is not unreasonable.
Description of Work: For water heaters, we have a contract with Favret Heating & Cooling. They come here and check twice a year. The water heater gets checked once a year in spring. The heating and cooling gets checked twice a year, spring and fall. When they came out the last time, they checked out the air conditioner and made sure that was all set being off during the winter. Then, they checked the furnace and adjusted that and the humidifier. Basically, they did a check up to make sure everything was okay for heating in the winter.

Favret has worked on this furnace before. No problems scheduling the appointment for a seasonal checkup. The seasonal checkup was more expensive than expected. However, the furnace wasn't working correctly and needed a new part. Eric came back to replace the part. The part isn't made anymore and the one he was given wasn't exactly right, so he made an additional trip back to the shop to find a part that would work. It was also less expensive than the first part he was given. I appreciate his extra effort to repair the furnace.

I don't know exactly what they did but whatever it was, the part they needed, he had on his truck and was able to fix it that day. I thought they did a really good job. I was surprised that they were able to get out the same day. The relative humidity in our house was too high due to increased weatherization and crawl space exposure. Phil Favret with help from an AprilAire representative provided excellent guidance on how to install and configure the dehumidifier to provide the best overall solution. The technician (Tim) installed the returns (pipes) so that there would be minimal interference with accessing the crawl spaces. His efforts are greatly appreciated. The installation was a success. We are now able keep the humidity at an acceptable level throughout the house.

First, I need to explain the way the AC I had installed at the same time as the furnace is supposed to work, though I didn't know it at the time. When the thermostat calls for cooling, the furnace blower runs at 'COOL' speed unless the thermostat also says it needs to dehumidify, in which case it alternates between 'COOL' and the somewhat slower 'HI HEAT' speed at 10 minute intervals. When the technician came out in July to fix the install issues I had noted, I told him the AC didn't seem to knock down the house humidity level the way I was accustomed to. He made an adjustment, but after a few days I couldn't say i noticed any difference. Fast forward to Sept. 16th and the furnace startup. A different guy comes and the first thing I say to him is to check the wiring because a previous Favret guy fiddled with the blower speeds and I don't think he did it right. As to be expected, he ignores my advice, goes through the standard procedure and gets extremely confused when the temperature rise on 'HI HEAT' is way too high. The guy in July had swapped the HI HEAT and LO HEAT speeds, so there wasn't enough air moving though the heat exchanger at high fire. It took several machinations for the new guy (literally, he said he just recently started working at Favret) to revert the wiring and try again. This time the temperature rises were within spec. That step done, I asked him to verify operation of the humidifier (purchased in June with everything else), but he couldn't figure out how to do that. He schedules another guy to come out 2 days later. Sept. 18th, they finally send a guy who has a clue. He looks at my thermostat controller (Equipment Control Module) and says it's not wired right. That is, the guy in June who screwed up so much else only used 5 wires (of the 7 in the cable) to connect the ECM to the furnace control board. The AC wasn't dehumidifying because the furnace wasn't getting the signal to slow down the blower. He wires the furnace control as Carrier intended for my configuration, but he concludes after testing that it will only work right if he wires in his own DPDT relay. He doesn't have one and comes back 8 days later to install it. His solution in effect tells the furnace I have a 2-stage AC and uses low cool (LO HEAT) speed when AC and dehumidification needed and normal COOL speed when not. It hasn't been hot too much for me to see how well this works.
Description of Work: Start new furnace (installed 6/17/2014) for first time and check operation.

They did a great job, were professional and quicker than expected. Prior to the onsite service we had such an easy time setting things up with their office staff who actually called back within hours on the same day (rare!).

I will try my best to detail my experiences with Favret over the last 12 months. My Wife and I live in Grandview Heights, OH. In July 2013, our air conditioner stopped working... of course, it was the hottest day of the year! Favret looked like a great option. Both my Wife and I are from Columbus, Favret has been established for a long time, and there were decent reviews online. OK - so the initial visit is $130 (or it was at the time). This included the first 30 minutes of the technician's time. I was able to schedule a visit for the same week, and the tech was prompt and timely. Very quickly, my Wife was told that our problem was a faulty thermostat. Huge bummer.... this would have been a simple fix with a quick visit to our local Home Depot. Here is where things start to become frustrating. The technician offered to replace our thermostat, which he had on the truck. He instructed my Wife that the cost would be $170, to which she agreed. The tech installed the new Thermostat - a Honeywell product. It is very basic, only 4 buttons, not a touch screen - seemed perfect for our simple house. The technician was on-site for 45 minutes in total. My Wife was then given a bill for $400+. This was the cost of the initial visit ($130), his additional 15 minutes of time, and the $170 Thermostat. This was a huge surprise. My wife was under the impression the entire bill would be $170... this number seemed right 'on the fly'... $130 for the initial visit, and a thermostat that sells for $50 at Home Depot. Favret probably get's a discount, so $170 seems fair. I called customer service that evening. Again, friendly on the phone. I could not understand how we just paid $170 for a very simple Thermostat, and at that - I felt my Wife had been taken advantage off. Favret offered to do nothing. I understood - there could have been countless things wrong with the A/C unit, so I rationalized that I over paid for the Thermostat (and I would get over it). Well - here we are 12 months later... and my Thermostat isn't working again. Exact same problem. I called Favret this morning - again, very friendly on the phone, and I was escalated to a manager (Gary was his name). Gary referenced my past work order, and listened to my problem. He explained that the Thermostat came with a 5 year guarantee... hey, maybe paying $170 for it wasn't a bad deal after all. Not the case. Gary explained to me that I would still have to pay $130 for a technician to come back out and for any labor involved. So - while Favret may replace the Thermostat, I am looking at paying over $600 in one year, for (presumably) 1.5 hours of work and a new Thermostat. Favret is not willing to stand behind their work. I explained to Gary that I have no problem paying $130+ labor for have a tech come out if there is a new problem, but if it's the thermostat, I don't feel I should have to pay anything. After all, if it is the thermostat, then (1) Favret uses poor quality equipment or (2) they aren't willing to stand behind their work. So - what do I do? I don't have much incentive to have Favret back out.... if its the thermostat, I surely don't want another poor quality product, and I could save money by going to Home Depot (installations are very easy). If it's not the thermostat, and Favret wasn't willing to help a customer in the first place - is this the company I want to continue supporting? What happens the next time I have a problem. Gary provided no help, other than saying 'sorry'. I was very polite on the phone - asked Gary specifically "what why I choose Favret again?" No response. I was told I could remove the thermostat from the wall and bring to their location to test it's use (to save myself the $130 service call). No empathy for my situation. Such a sad story, considering how involved in the community this family is. My Wife and I grew up going to school and playing sports with this family. I have Worthington Air coming out this Friday - I will surely write a review following.

Mr. [member name removed], First I want to thank you for using our company's services in the past 7/26/2013. I apologize if we some how did not meet your expectations in your service request on 7/15/2014. Our Service Manager did talk with you and he did review the history and warranty with you at the time. And yes Home Depot and other big box companies do sell thermostats and they might work just fine on most HVAC systems. The thermostats they sell our not the models that we offer and install and put a warranty our work for our customers. There is some differences and the warranty conditions are different also. Our labor warranty is 90 days and the warranty on all our parts are based on what the manufacturer will offer on it. And our Service Manager explained this to you. Give or take a few days you were asking for a one year labor warranty on our work. It's apparent to us that our work was not at fault or a defective operation in your system would have been noticed in 2013. Our warranty policy on our work do have exceptions to them when there is an obvious reason to do so. Again thank you for using our company's service in the past. Mark Favret

It was a 2-day job. The first day, a crew of 4 to 5 came out to replace the furnace and AC. The furnace was was only installed to the point needed to get the AC to function with the old thermostat. 2 holes were drilled in the wall for outside air for the furnace and the flue liner needed for the water heater was installed. They did a pressure test on the lines and late in the serviceman came out to turn on the air conditioner. This part went OK except I had to stop them from throwing out my air cleaner, which I had told the salesman I wanted to keep. The second day, a single guy came out to replace the water heater and finish hooking up the furnace, humidifier, and thermostat, (though the furnace won't be 'started' and final adjustments made until September). This guy's work was sloppy in a lot ways. The vent pipe isn't seated completely on the water heater because to do so would run the vent pipe within an inch too of the furnace's gas shutoff valve ( if they'd used a 4" elbow downstream of the transition instead of a 3" elbow upstream, the pipe wouldn't had to be 6" from the wall). The vertical pipe for the furnace air intake isn't plumb (and he spilled PVC solvent on the furnace cover plate, leaving a purple stain). Where the flue liner comes though the chimney wall hasn't been sealed. The humidifier wasn't installed level, which is important for proper operation of the device. This guy couldn't even get the new thermostat on wall level. Overall, it looks more like a self install by a homeowner than a professional installation. It makes me wonder about the quality of the soldering pipes where he hooked up the tank. The next day, I called Favret, and the following day 2 managers came out to look at the work. They hemmed and hawed a lot about the vent pipe, but agreed the humidifier needed to be fixed. 3 weeks later, they haven't done anything, but I did get an invoice saying the job was 100% complete. Favret have been somewhat sloppy on back office side as well. They had to get the permit of the water heater post hoc, after I called and asked why the permit they mailed me didn't mention it. They also didn't do any paperwork of the AEP rebate on the AC unit (I suspect the policy of their salesmen is to only mention the rebate in conjunction with the premium 2-stage unit even though other models also qualify).
Description of Work: Replaced A/C, furnace (plus humidifier), and water heater tank (included installation of flue liner). The average age of the old equipment was 23 years.

We just moved into the area and our air conditioner was not working properly. A family member recommended Favret so we called and they were able to come the next day. The service man came on time and that is the only good thing I can say. We told him no cool air was coming out of the vents (which are in the ceiling) I asked if he had a ladder so he could check it and he said he had a ladder but never checked it. Then stated (live in a condo) he was not sure which heat pump was ours but one had very "dirty" coils. We asked how he knew which one was ours and he said it was the only one running. That did not seem like a good way to tell which one it was. He complained that he would have to get out his 100 ft hose to drag it in back to clean the coils. I had to ask him to do it PLEASE!! He did, then came back in and everything went down hill from there. I asked very detailed questions on why it was not working. The condo I live in is 5 years old and he said something about the furnace not being large enough. When I asked for a more thorough explanation he quit talking. I then told him the programmable thermostat was very confusing and asked if he could replace it. He said yeah but it would cost another $190, since this was the first fee he quoted I said go ahead. I told him to please take out the whole thermostat and the surrounding plastic, I did not care about the dry wall because I was having so many holes in the condo repaired anyway. He only replaced the thermostat and did not take out the remaining plastic. He would not give me a reason when I asked. I finally gave up on the questions and asked him to give me separate bills, one for the thermostat and one for the labor. He was not happy!!! I got my shocking bill of $520 for 1 1/2 hr labor and new thermostat and paid with my credit card. He gave me my receipt and walked out without one word. I called the owner after the serviceman left and he tried to be helpful. But it was one excuse after another. I would never recommend this company to anyone. I got lots of excuses that made no sense to me and they knew it. I had 2 sisters and a brother in law with me and they all felt the same way.

Mike asked if he could come a little early which was fine and he requested approval to start looking at the unit before I even got home from work. He was very conscientious and efficient. He had to get the part from the local supplier, left and came back with it in less than an hour. This company is not inexpensive but you get what you pay for. We had called them last night after 5PM and we're back in cool air before 24 hour. I've used FAVRET for over 12 years and have no reason to go elsewhere. Very good service.
Description of Work: Replaced the compressor fan on the exterior central AC unit.

We have used FAVRET for Many years for our HOME and OFFICE. Last fall we contacted them to get a quote on a NEW Furnace and A/C unit for our HOME. We had a BAD experience with the SALESPERSON and went with another company. (Also we had a bad experience with a Maintenance person coming to our OFFICE with NO FILTERS and the Filter information was clearly on our records.) I contacted Mark Favret and he wrote me a letter dated September 16, 2013 saying he was sorry for all of our bad service and "Our customer's patronage is important to us, and we sincerely apologize for not meeting your expectation of quality service." Well it is June 16 and we have not been contacted for our OFFICE A/C Maintenance. My husband called this morning and got a lady in "Dispatch." She said, not very nicely, "Well, you did not return your contract!" and she said she would look into it. That made me furious! I wrote a letter to Mark Favret explaining that I THOUGHT "Customer's patronage was important to them!" I also left a voicemail for Mark. Shortly thereafter "Greta" called to talk to my husband. I explained that I had just sent over a letter to Mark and she said that Mark wanted her to call my husband. Again, she said "Well, you never sent back your contract!" Dah! Cannot this company even fathom that perhaps the Mail got messed up and we never got it! She said "We have lots of customers that receive contracts and never send them back!" (Perhaps they should investigate the REASON for that---postal issues, poor service, etc.---but I guess they have so many customers it doesn't matter?) Then Greta said she would send over a contract and WHEN THEY RECEIVED PAYMENT they would put me on the books to be scheduled. I then asked HOW LONG of a wait would I have as it is already June and you get very busy with A/C calls when the Heat starts! She explained that she, herself, handled HOME servicing and I would have to talk to DISPATCH for a OFFICE maintenance. However, if I gave her a credit card for the contract IMMEDIATELY she could walk over to "Dispatch" and get me scheduled. Don't do me any favors! Wow! I felt like a Criminal that could not be trusted! I inquired about the fee and she said "It will be $291." I asked how much it was previously and she said "$268; it has gone up!" So not even a 'price break' for all the BAD Customer service. Well, I did some research and I called the company that we purchased our HOME Furnace and A/C from last fall. Since we are a small OFFICE building (1,100) sq. ft they can provide service for our OFFICE as well ---at a price of $198/year (a $93/year SAVINGS from Favret!) WOW! And....she scheduled me for an appointment and said I can even decide AT THE APPOINTMENT TIME if I want to be billed every time or sign a Contract! This other company is a Highly-rated Angie's List company as well. Naturally, I will NOT use FAVRET again and their "Sorry" letter was just WORDS---and it was NOT SINCERE!!! I know THIS review won't mean much since they have thousands but it does show that Customer Service can "GO WRONG" at any time with Highly-rated Companies!
Description of Work: Called to determine why we had not received a call for Commercial A/C service
