Description of Work: I called them at the suggestion of my lawn service provider to arrange for removal of a small-ish fir tree and to obtain an estimate for additional work on several large trees on my property. When I learned they would charge me $60 just to come to the property, I declined to use their services. That's a lousy way to gain new customers.

Response from Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation
I am sorry you feel that way. It is noted [on Angies list] that we charge a first time client fee to come out to your property. As we do not know what is on your property or your needs. So this covers for the arborist to spend time walking your property, checking the plant material, looking at the condition of all your trees and shrubs, and answering any questions you may have. We also at that time can give you recommendations and/or cost to do any work that may need to be done. We feel that the arborist time is important. Once we do a service for you there is no charge for us to come out and check things and give estimates.

Description of Work: I didn't like that they charged me $60 just to look at the tree and give me an estimate to remove it. And he showed up early in the morning. No other company I contacted charged me for an estimate. $60 is a lot to pay for a 5 min conversation. I did not use their service.

Sorry, but we do charge for our arborist time to come to a property for the first time to check and walk the property to answer any questions you may have, whether it be for pruning, removal, consultation, id plants and plant health care problems. Once we do a service we do not charge to stop out to give recommendations or estimates.

Description of Work: I contacted Ahlum & Arbor in hopes of preserving our one and only shade tree in our back yard. This tree provided the shade for the yard, our deck, and the back of our home. 7/19/14 -Initial contact when a section of the tree came down. Removal of debris cost $306.38. I asked at that time for the tree to be shaped and thinned. They advised not a good time of year to prune fruit trees; should be done in the Fall. The tree was very lopsided and unsightly. Contacted A & A in October. 10/16/14 they came out and gave an estimate of $635.00 to trim 5'-10', shape, and prune to reduce weight; however, the work could not be scheduled until Jan/Feb. In late November, another section came down and they advised the tree could not be saved and cut down the remainder. I will always feel that if this tree had received the proper preservation techniques in a timely manner, it would still be in our yard. I wish they had scheduled the fall pruning when they evaluated it in July. (we were not made aware they schedule 3 months in advance) My mistake was thinking Ahlum & Arbor had the same passion for preserving this tree that we did and continually taking their advice. They contacted us in Feb to schedule the pruning of the tree that they had removed in Dec. ??? They then promptly submitted their invoice for $638.55 and stamped it "PAST DUE." I guess we were supposed to remind them to bill us. I emailed A & A on 2/7/15 expressing my displeasure; and on 3/9/15+ received a reply stating my email had been misplaced, she would show it to Chris Ahlum; and if I still had my Angies List coupon they would deduct 10%. (Yipee) In fairness to Ahlum & Arbor, they did a good job cleaning up and hauling away debris. That's just not why I went with them. I could have hired anyone for that in the local weekly newspaper for less money as I have in the past. | |Joyce Ditrick |

Response from Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation
Ahlum & Arbor was contacted on 6/4/15 to do storm damage in a pear that had split in a storm.A decision was to not cut down the tree. The work was done on 6/5/15 [storm damage has a priority] and billed 6/18/15. Invoice paid 7/12/15. The homeowner called us in Oct to have the tree pruned, at that time we were scheduling in Jan/Feb. We had another storm take more of the tree down before we could get out to do the scheduled work. At that time we went ahead and cut down the rest of the tree. An Invoice was sent dated 12/18/14 for 635.00.For some reason it was not caught that we had gone out and cut down tree. The work scheduled for Jan/Feb was still on schedule. The person that schedules called about doing the work. During the same few days the bookkeeper had sent out statements to all clients with outstanding invoices. Book keeping and scheduling was unaware of what the other department was working on. The homeowner got very upset about this, but as of 2/1/15 the invoice from December had not been paid. The homeowner sent an email to a general mailbox, the email was printed and misplaced. When the homeowner called about his displeasure, he was asked if they were an Angies list client, when told yes, we offered a 10% discount on all of the work done from both invoices which was a credit for $94.50. We have no control with the weather and we do our best on scheduling. But homeowner did not contact us until Oct 16th do to anything with the tree .. Sorry that the client was upset with the fact that two storms hit the same tree.

Description of Work: We signed up for an estimate when we were at the Home @ Garden show 2012 thinking it was free. When the worker from the tree co came he was going to bill us. We ended up talking w the owner of the company & he dismissed the charge. I think the owner is quite knowledgeable of trees. We would do the usual process of getting estimates w several companies & if his company's estimate was comparable, we would use it. I don't recall the date the worker came so I just guessed at the date for approximate service date field for this Review. It's a required field & needed a date.

Response from Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation
I find this very odd, Member signed a contract to do over $2,000.00 worth of work that is scheduled to be done the week of June 10th. She called on 3/13/12 and we have told all clients up to 10 business days to get out at that time. We called on 3/30/12 to set up a time and the client set up an appointment for 4/6/12. On 4/11/12 she signed the above contract. So we feel that she unjustly graded this report.

Response from Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation
We tell all new clients that there is a fee. It is even posted on Angies List. As explained on the phone, if we have not been on the property before there is a fee to walk the property and talk to the client and give professional advice and an estimate to do the work. This covers for the certified arborist time on the property, cost to travel and to spend time with the client going over all their questions on that first visit. After a service has been completed there is no fee to come back out and check the property and/or to do estimates. We do not require a deposit to do work, so this was not a deposit it was a first time client fee.

Described as above.
Description of Work: We hired them to deal with our Ash tree borer infestation. They were the only ones that listed on their web site a link to the Big 10 universities agricultural extension services recommendations about Ash borer treatment, so I figured they knew what they were doing. They said some of our ash trees were beyond saving, as we suspected, so they removed about about 6 trees. They did a good job of that. They said that they could treat about 5 others and there would be good chance of saving them. They came back abut a month later and treated those trees. Only time (several years) will tell if the treatment is effective. The Big 10 universities report says that a certain chemical works best, but I do not know if this company used that chemical because they gave us very little information about the treatment. The staff was polite and helpful and let us make the decisions as to which trees to remove and which to treat and which to do nothing. The arborist (Mr Ahlum) seems quite knowledgeable about trees. My only complaint is that it was difficult to make an appointment, requiring several phone calls, and then THEY want to decide when to come out regardless of whether that time is convenient for us. They charged us $40 for the initial estimate.

Description of Work: Called to get an estimate and they charge $40 for "new customers" just for an estimate. Not interested in paying for an estimate on what could amount to a couple of thousand dollars in work for them, particularly since most other companies I contacted offer estimates for free.

Response from Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation
Ahlum & Arbor has no hidden fees and was up front about the cost for the first visit to the propety. Had he chosen to go with Ahlum & Arbor, the service provided to him would have been a certified arborist consulting with him on the trees and shrubs on his property. This $40.00 charge includes the arborist making a trip to the clients property, walking the property with the client and giving recommendation and cost. Once a client relationship has been established, there is no charge for the arobrist to return and consult with the client about problems on the property or to give estimates.
