We called this company around 9 in the morning and the plumber was at our house by 10:30. He had a sump pump on his truck and replaced our damaged pump in the same visit. The plumber was professional and informative and we were very pleased with the service.

He showed us some corrosion on the bottom of the boiler and said that before the winter was over the bottom of the boiler would break open. He also said (it seemed he was trying to scare us and it worked) that it would blow open on one of the coldest nights of the year and it is difficult to schedule the replacement Needless to say we were surprised. Given this news, we scheduled several estimates from other heating and cooling companies in the area. Two of the first two guys to give us an estimate indicated that the boiler does not need to be replaced. One guy told us because the boiler was relatively young (it's not the original boiler in our old house) that it could last as many as 10 more years. The technician from V and E Hann also indicated that boilers typically lasted 12 years on average and as little as 7 years. That fact seemed suspect and after talking with others in the industry we found that some boiler can last as long as 50-75 years.
Description of Work: Repaired leaky radiators, repaired broken valve and inspected boiler. Overall the technician was friendly and courteous. He appeared to do his job efficiently and we were able to get an appointment within 1 day of calling for service. The only negative remarks I have is that the technician told us we needed to replace our boiler. He also appeared to have tried to remove any other repair stickers that were on our water heater and boiler and placed very large stickers for their company on the water heater and boiler. I thought this was a little offensive, I would prefer to be asked before leaving stickers on my property. Perhaps leaving stickers/magnets with the customer so they can do what they want with them would be more appropriate.

I DON'T LIKE RESPONDING TO ANGIE'S LIST COMMENTS, SO I WILL KEEP IT SHORT. I AM SORRY WE OFFENDED HER WITH OUR STICKERS, BUT SINCE SHE ALREADY HAD STICKERS OUR TECH PROBABLY DID NOT FEEL IT WOULD BE A PROBLEM. CORROSION IS A SIGN OF A CURRENT OR PAST LEAK ON A BOILER. OUR TECH SUGGESTED BE PROACTIVE REGARDING THE LEAK INSTEAD OF REACTIVE, SINCE MANY TIMES BOILER WILL QUIT IN THE COLDEST WEATHER. WE NEVER SAID SHE HAD TO REPLACE IT, BUT SUGGESTED TO CONSIDER IT. THE 12 YEARS WAS IN REFERENCE TO THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY PERIOD ON A NEW BOILER. IN MY OPINION, FOR AS MANY BOILERS THAT LAST 75 YEARS, THERE ARE JUST AS MANY THAT LAST ONLY 7.

They were very helpful and explained all the options. The plumber who did the installation work was extremely experienced and quick, left no mess, and hauled away the equipment being removed for no additional charge. Everyone with Verne & Ellsworth Hann Inc was very professional and courteous.

The call ended up being $73. They had raised their rates, but said they would honor the old price and then I let him know I was Angie's List member and they honored the $15 coupon on top of that. But, I had to bring up the price differences and call their store before this was honored. He was in and out in thirty minutes. We didn't have him actually repair the problem, just diagnose the problem. The grout/ceramic tile in the shower was what was having the problem. As soon as the water turns on, it begins to leak. He checked it out and figured out it was grout and tile. So, I was happy with the results, even if it was just a diagnosis because now we know what to repair.

INSTEAD OF CHARGING BY THE JOB, THEY CHARGE BY THE HOUR ($88) AND ON TOP OF THAT EVERY 15 MINUTES AFTER THE HOUR THEY CHARGE $15. BE AWARE BECAUSE CHARGING BY THE HOUR, ESPECIALLY WITH PLUMBING WORK, COULD END UP BEING RATHER PRICEY BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW HOW LONG THE JOB CAN TAKE.

Response from Verne & Ellsworth Hann
AN HOURLY BASIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO CHARGE A CUSTOMER FAIRLY. MOST OF OUR COMPETITORS HAVE RECENTLY SWITCHED TO “FLAT RATE” PRICING TO GENERATE MORE INCOME FOR THEMSELVES. EXAMPLE: IF I QUOTE A JOB AT $150.00 AND IT TAKES A HALF HOUR, THE CUSTOMER IS PAYING $62.00 MORE THAN IF I CHARGED ON AN HOURLY BASIS. OUR RATES ARE AS FOLLOWS, THE FIRST HALF HOUR IN THE HOME IS $88.00 AND EVERY HOUR AFTER THAT IS $68.00. AS THE MEMBER STATES, “YOU NEVER KNOW HOW LONG THE JOB CAN TAKE,” SO WOULDN’T IT ONLY BE FAIR TO CHARGE FOR HOW LONG YOU WORK? DO CUSTOMERS REALLY BELIEVE THEY WOULD PAY LESS WHEN QUOTED A JOB? THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IS YOU ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THE FINAL BILL SHOULD BE, AS OPPOSED TO FLAT RATE, WHEN YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE LABOR AND MATERIALS ACTUALLY COST. MY COMPETITORS HAVE SWITCHED TO THE “FLAT RATE PRICING SCHEDULE” TO MAKE MORE MONEY. I HAVE NOT SWITCHED TO FLAT RATE BECAUSE I FEEL IT IS ONLY FAIR TO CHARGE ON AN HOURLY BASIS SO THE CUSTOMER CAN UNDERSTAND THE FINAL BILL. HOMEOWNERS HAVE TO REALIZE THAT CONTRACTORS USE UP FRONT “FLAT RATE” PRICING TO HIDE THE TRUE COSTS OF A JOB AND TO GENERATE MORE INCOME.

Bill from Verne & Ellsworth Hann showed up exactly as scheduled, took a look & recommended the proper party. My faucets now glide between on/off and actually work. The cost was less than one visit from the other plumbers & I now know that the work will last. I will certainly use this company again!

We've used VEH for other plumbing in our home before. We had company coming (this was during the winter), and did not have heat for them. VEH made the problem theirs, and worked to get heat to the 3rd floor. The configuration of the boiler didn't permit for enough heat, so we decided to make some significant changes and improvements. VEH was thorough and their knowledge of boiler heating systems is better than most in the region. If you have a Heights home in need of boiler system repairs, you need to consider using VEH.
Description of Work: While our Cleveland Hts. boiler is relatively new (w/in the past 15 years) there were some aspects of the installation that were poor, including an expansion tank that was too small and some low-quality pressure valves. The result is that our 3rd floor suite was not getting heat.

First of all, he came about an hour and a half after they had called that day and told me a more specific time. Then, the technician came in to the basement with all his equipment, took a look at my heater, and told me that the company doesn't service Kenmore heaters. I asked if he could do anything then and he said that he could clean out some dust which he said that there was hardly any. After less than 30 minutes, he charged me $73 dollars after the Angie's List coupon. I was livid. He said he had to charge me something for coming out to my house and for the little time he spent in cleaning out what he could. They should have initially asked what kind of furnace I had when I had called. Then I wouldn't have been pressured into paying for almost nothing. This wasted my time and theirs eventually because I immediately called the company afterwards about this scam they were trying to pull and they promised to send my check back which was promptly received in the mail.

We were in dire straits as our furnace failed on a Sunday afternoon with temperatures forecast in the teens for that evening. We called at 6:30 am Monday. Verne and Ellsworth called us back right at 8:00 am which is when they promised to call. They said they would be out between 9 am and 1:00 pm. At 9:00 am the serviceman called to say they would be arriving in 20-30 minutes, which is in fact what occurred. By 10:30, the technician diagnosed the problem, but had to leave to get the necessary parts. While on the parts run, he called to say he would be back by noon. The serviceman did arrive by noon, and had the job finished by around 1:30. On top of it all, the final bill was about $70 less than the original estimate. This organization is well-run, with an obvious concern for customer satisfaction. I have never had a service company be so diligent at keeping the customer informed with respect to scheduling issues. I highly recommend Verne and Ellsworth.
