I spoke to owner, Bill Hann, who was very friendly and helpful. He connected me with Jason, who took my information and described the different options for a new water heater. He was patient and took the time to answer all my questions. We decided to upgrade to a more efficient unit. They obtained the necessary city permit and arrived early the next morning to install the unit. The installers were very professional and efficient, and their clean-up was immaculate. The final price was what they had quoted on the phone. The new unit is awesome, and I probably would have just gotten a cheaper standard unit had Jason not educated me about the differences between models. I would highly recommend this company and would definitely use them again based on my experience.
Description of Work: We needed to replace our 19 year-old hot water heater. They removed the old unit and installed a new one.

Their service is excellent and they are very responsive. The gentleman who came out was someone who had serviced our unit before. The part went bad right after the warranty expired and they did everything to try to get it under warranty. We haven?t had any problems with them at all. My boyfriend thinks they are too expensive, but they get the job done. They are the only ones we call.

When I discovered the leaks, I called Verne Ellsworth Hann. They were quite booked up that week, but because I said I needed them fixed ASAP, they squeezed me in the same day. Dave came punctually and did the whole job in just over an hour. He installed high quality parts in the old toilets, which will give us reasonably trouble free service for a few more years. He warned though that one of them has a rusty drain hole and if it starts flushing by itself, it will have to be replaced. Dave was most helpful and very efficient and considerate. The price was steep, but worth it. We have been struggling with inferior parts and constant flushing problems for months. Before the repair, I had been using a paperclip to pull up the flapper, which had to be replaced every month or so. Now we have a sturdy rod to serve us. One of the "oldies" is still a little cantankerous, but one additional jiggle will do the job! And for a few more years we can still enjoy its special tan shade that matches the rest of the bathroom tiles.
Description of Work: Replaced flushing system in three toilets. Installed a shut-off valve on one toilet. Two of the three toilets were old style, ( 55 years old), color co-ordinated. The third was only 10 years old, but leaking heavily.

It was about an 8 hour project. We've used them before, we think they are fair, very thorough and they explain what they are doing and what's going on. They are very clear on what's needed and what's not needed, they are honest and thorough. They may not be the cheapest ones out there but I feel they know what they are doing.

The leak happened while we were away on Christmas vacation. Our water bill ended up being almost $400.00. They are our usual plumbers. I have used them repeatedly in the past. They have been here twice in the past couple of months. They get the job done. They are very professional and friendly. They are very reliable and they are local. They are in Cleveland Heights. They really seem to know what they are doing. I don't really know what the going rate is for the type of work that they do, but I am never thrilled to pay a plumbing bill. I will continue to use their services for most of the smaller plumbing jobs. I have found that they are not always best for emergency work because they don't seem to have as big a staff as another plumber that I have come to know. They are good for something planned, but not for other work. There wasn't much damage in the basement. We were very lucky. I hesitate to call it flooding because we have two drains in the basement floor and all the water just went into the drains. The drains worked very well. The entire basement floor was wet, but it wasn't really flooding. We did have some things on the floor, but they weren't terribly valuable. There wasn't much of damage so we didn't file an insurance claim. The water was flowing like a torrent and it occurred for 3 or 4 days while we were away. When I walked into the house after our trip, I immediately smelled chlorine. It smelled like a pool. I couldn't figure it out because we don't even use bleach in the house, not even for laundry. I dismissed it. Then when I started walking downstairs to do the laundry from the trip down in the basement, I saw a rapidly flowing river of water flowing through our basement and then I saw the pipe that had burst. I will never forget that night. They are our favorite contractor. They generally send the same guy for most of the work that we need in this house. He is the best. He is fantastic. He is a great guy.

My steam heating boiler could not maintain its pilot light. My replacing the thermocouple, something I'm accustomed to do for this unit, did not help. I turned to Angie's List, and selected this company, which has a long-standing local reputation. The serviceman came exactly on time, after 2 advance notices of his being on his way. He quickly located the problem, made the fix, and made useful suggestions for future maintenance. Overall, very courteous and professional. (I only gave a "B" for price because I have no other similar service for reference.)

excellent experience overall. Chris Hann provided a prompt written estimate that included several options for furnace/airconditioner combinations. He also took the time to explain the different options including the advantages and disadvantages of each. The installation went smoothly and the area was left spotless. We will definitely recommend the company in the future.

The first visit was a maintenance check and evaluation of a leaking pipe. He was very thorough and very helpful. He did find a bad thermocouple and recommended that we replace the part. He also discovered a leaky valve and recommended that we make that repair before the other, major repair, as it might make a difference first. He cam back to repair the valve and was on time and courteous.

I purchased a Waste King Legend 3300 disposal, the top-rated model by Consumer Reports. Unfortunately, as I would discover, the plumbers who work for Verne Ellsworth & Hann are accustomed to installing Insinkerators, and Ernie, my plumber, was flummoxed by the fact that the cushion mount was a polysynthetic material rather than metal; he said he had never seen one like that. His first attempt to mount the unit failed, and a test caused water to spill from the canister. Together we called the Waste King "help line" but got a recording. Ernie's second attempt to install the disposal seemed to work OK, though he urged me to hang onto all the paperwork that came with the product because there would be no guarantee. This left me feeling unsettled and unsure about whether the disposal had been properly installed. Later in the day, when Waste King customer service returned my call, they told me that Waste King had used polysynthetic mounts for 40 years. As I have used Verne & Ellsworth Hann for many years, I decided to call the company to report what had happened; naively, I thought they would like to know about my experience so that they could consider upgrading the training of their plumbers. Instead, Jason, the office manager, became defensive and said that "V&EH installs Insinkerator and can't be expected to know how to install every plumbing product in the world." Thus, if you, as a wise consumer, choose the top-rated Waste King, I advise finding a plumber who is familiar with the brand.

Originally, I was very disappointed but after talking to Chris I feel better. You should know they charge $88 just to come out. Then, the plumber said that the Insinkerator that he was installing was $318. Add in another $88 for installation and the total was $494. You can find that same Insinkerator for cheaper on Amazon, but you may want to consider supporting a local business instead.

In spite of the new valve, 6 hours later, the leak began again. I called them, they responded quickly and came in 20 minutes to find that there was a problem in another part of the steel hose under the sink. There was no charge for the return visit. Jason apologized several times for the inconvenience. I hope they have definitely fixed the problem.

Representative Chris explained our options and described how the work would be done. He sent us a detailed proposal that spelled out each aspect of the work. The men performed a smooth operation, explaining what they were doing, and answering my questions as needed. Each day they left the work area clean and tidy. They worked steadily from 8:30 to 4:00 p.m. until the job was finished. I was particularly grateful that I could leave the house safely for several hours each day to be with my husband in the hospital. Chris came to check on the work from time to time. In addition to the glowing reports on Angie's List, I have had enthusiastic recommendations from three of my neighbors about this company.
Description of Work: Three men worked for 4 days removing our 55-year-old furnace, 40-year old air-conditioner, and 11-year-old water heater. They took away all the old equipment and installed a top of the line furnace, air-conditioner and water heater, installed venting pipes for furnace, AC and water heater to meet code requirements.

The initial visit in October seemed to go well. However I was told that the Air Conditioning could not be checked in the cold weather, so it wasn't checked out. My furnace was checked OK and cleaned. The water heater flue was cemented into the chimney and the release valve tube on the water heater was fixed according to Euclid Code. I was pleased with the service, but thought the price was a little excessive. Then when I smelled gas while working around the furnace in March, I called them again to repair the gas leak. The technician found (3) leaks. I wondered why these leaks were not discovered when they originally inspected my furnace in October. I was charged another $169 to repair these leaks. Yesterday 04-13-10, I had a HVAC serviceman from another company come to my home to check out my air conditioner as the compressor would not power up when the air was turned on at the thermostat. He discovered that the wires for my air conditioning were cut, thus the air compressor would not work. This should have been discovered by the Verne & Ellsworth Hann Technician when he came in Oct. Lastly, the other serviceman from the other company inspected my heat exchange just to verify that it was OK. The very first chamber he looked at he discovered about a 4" crack. He showed me the crack and told me that they should have seen the crack when they originally checked my furnace. I feel that the gas leaks as well as the air conditioners cut wires should have been discovered on the initial service call in Oct. I paid good money ($327) to have the furnace and air looked at the first time. That is the reason that I gave them the bad grade and won't use their services again.
Description of Work: Had them come over originally in October of 2009 to check out my heating and air conditioning and also to lengthen the discharge pipe on the water heater and also cement the flue to the chimney from the water heater. Had to have them come back in March as I smelled gas as I was working near the furnace.

Response from Verne & Ellsworth Hann
I have decided not to respond to this or any other future positive or negative Angie's List reports. I am too busy trying my best to manage a successful 4 generation family business. We treat all of our customers with the same respect and professionalism that we would expect to receive ourselves. Should any Angie's List member wish to hear our version of this story, please give our office a call for the details. We continually strive to meet our customer's expectations, but over the years have come to realize no matter how dedicated you are; you cannot please everyone.

Bill and Chris worked with us to replace a boiler in our last house and are working with us on our new home. Both houses were built in aproximately the same time period (early '20s) They are very helpful and knowledgeable and charge a fair price. Most importantly, they know a LOT about steam heat. Many companies have tech's that they will send over to work on a steam heat system, but they have no idea what they are doing. We had Broadway come to our house to service our boilers when we first moved in because that was who the previous owner had recommended - as it turned out, they had no idea how to service our boiler....They charged 150 bucks, but actually made things worse - they flooded the bolier and installed the wrong pressure gauge - Bill came over and immediately diagnosed several things that we need to change. The boiler that Broadway installed a few years ago is much too big and we are working with VEH to recitfy the situatrion to provide us with a more efficient heating system. If you have steam heat and an older home, I would highly recommend them...It is very hard to say if their price is high or low - because I have been un able to find someone to do the job right, so there is really no one to compare them to - I won't tell them until they are done with my house though so that they don't raise the price!
Description of Work: We have used VEH in the past and have always been very satisfied. In our old house they serviced our very old boiler until it finally had to be replaced. They worked very closely with us to help us manage the cost by eliminating some radiators to enable us to get by with a smaller (less expensive) boiler.
