They give prompt service. They are very professional. Their technician who I get usually every time so I came to know the guy and because he has an idea of the history of service for my equipment, I can talk to him about that.

Very well - furnace was non-functional in the winter and they came promptly to provide an estimate. Scheduled the replacement 10 days later - would have been sooner but furnace was on and off able to stay lit - but when it finally stopped working for good - they came out within a few days.

Initial meeting was interesting - impression was that the company is wary of being used just to provide quotes and/or information. This makes sense given their good reputation but corresponding prices. Perhaps other consumers have tried to get the former without incurring the latter. In any event, they demonstrated a depth of knowledge that other contractors hadn't been able to convey. With such a sizable investment, I wanted pros over a perceived cut-rate job. After agreeing on the project, but before work began, I barraged them with countless questions - and the service here was unprecedented in my experience with contractors. Bill Hann came back out a couple of times and spent over an hour each time walking me through answers to my questions. I'm an engineer who asks lots of technical questions and occasionally steps out of his depth. Bill was both patient and precise with his answers ? again providing a sense of confidence rarely achievable when working with a company for the first time. We ended up modifying the original design plans and going with an upgrade that had to be close to at-cost for them. The work itself took two weeks ? planning and running thirty-three flexible duct lines through attic space, walls, joist bays ? you name it. Crew was courteous and CLEAN given the massive amount of plaster dust this had to have caused. Zero complaints. Finally ? performance. I waited to write this review until after the cooling season was over. One of the biggest concerns I had going into the project was whether the system had both been sized correctly and balanced across the three levels of the house appropriately. This is where the true skill of an HVAC company is demonstrated. This summer was absurdly hot and sunny and the system worked phenomenally throughout. On the hottest of days, the third floor was quite livable and the rest of the house was an ice box if we wanted it to be. Overall I?m very pleased. You get what you pay for ? if you have a complex job, I highly recommend Verne & Ellsworth Hann. If you?re looking for a ?bargain?, you probably should move on. If you?re looking for value, and you?re an educated consumer you?ll be very pleased.

Excellent job - the tech was very patient with my questions (new house, first time with a boiler), and was very neat and tidy with the work.
Description of Work: Winter checkup of boiler. The boiler drain was blocked, which the tech cleared. In addition to checking everything out and tuning it up for the coming year, the tech showed me everything I need to do to keep the boiler functioning well.

We had a leaky pipe going from our boiler and per the recommendation of a friend we called Verne & Ellsworth Hann. They came out to look at it and charged over a hundred dollars to look at it - in and out in 10 minutes. They called back after the weekend and told us that they needed to replace the leaky pipe and that they recommended replacing another as well while they were there. They quoted around $1400 and although it was $500 more than another (telephone) quote, their reputation and the recommendation led us to use them. They came the following day and did the work and it appeared that everything was completed and the work was done well. No more leaks and the pipes were brand spanking new. The problem is - they disconnected the washer drain when they moved things around to install the pipes and never reinstalled the washer drain. So when we did a load of laundry last night the washer drain literally flooded our basement - I mean - flooded it. Soaked all of our washed laundry as well as everything else within 20 feet of the washer. I called this morning to complain and was connected to the service manager who told me that they should have checked the drain and they should have made sure that everything was put back as it was when they got there and that he would call his technician and let him know about this issue and that he was sorry. He SHOULD have said - "I am so sorry, I will get someone right over there with a shop vac to clean things up and we will reimburse you for your troubles considering that you now need to rewash ALL of your laundry, throw away damaged boxes and their contents, etc." But nope - thanks for the $1500+ dollars you spent with us this week and so long - YOUR problems (that they caused) are not OUR problems. We try to use local businesses exclusively and will continue to do so - but Verne & Ellsworth Hann is off the list and if this is the way they handle their mistakes hopefully others will take this into consideration as well before hiring them.

Response from Verne & Ellsworth Hann
I was aware of the unfortunate leak that was caused by our mistake of not re-inserting the drain hose of their washer into the drain, and we apologized and admitted our mistake immediately to the member. We strive for perfection but accidents do happen, even with our best efforts of to avoid them. We spoke with the member and he said all they had to do was re wash the prior load of laundry and that the water was " no big deal". Had he requested us to return with a shop vac to clean up the water we would have gladly but he made no mention of wanting us to do that. I understand his disappointment that we caused the leak but don't understand his grades for "price". We looked at the job and called him prior to the repair with an estimate and he was able to shop around if he thought it was not fair. We made all the necessary repairs at the quoted price and those repairs went well and solved their leak in the heating system. We collected the exact amount he was quoted. The water leak that resulted later was human error and is regrettable. We will learn from this mistake and make all efforts to triple check the job site prior to leaving, but of course this is real life and we are not perfect.

Bill Hann was wonderful. He was very informative and scheduled the work almost immediately. They were professional and punctual and even swept the floor afterwords! Dryer was not available for hook up at the time and when I got the dryer I had to get someone else in to hook it up. They had to add on to the dryer exhaust duct, but otherwise everything was perfect. Bill is very committed to his work and is personally involved with making sure things get done correctly

The tech was very friendly, helpful, and personable. It was originally a check up on my 20 year old A/C unit. He ended up finding major issues with the unit. They repaired the disconnect box and noticed that there were some loose wires. I was quoted a price, but when they came they actually charged me more because of the additional issues. I was okay with that because they actually came back the following day because the unit froze over. They didn't charge me for the second visit. They don't seem to be in the business to sell you products nor services, but rather just to help out their customers.
Description of Work: I had them come over to tune-up my A/C unit, but it turned out to be a sizable repair.

Chris Hann visited our home and inspected the layout of the home as well as the overall HVAC equipment. Chris was very professional and courteous, promising to get a quote to us on the A/C replacement and service agreement within a couple of days. It arrived as promised. I allowed a month to pass as I gathered and assessed material from competing bidders. During that time Chris Hann periodically touched base with me to see if they were still in the running and if there were any questions that he could help with. Not pushy, just professional and showing that he wanted our business. As we exchanged e-mails, Chris patiently entertained and thoughtfully answered my questions about both the installation and the service agreement, and he even suggested optimal timing on my order so that I could get the best deal on specific unit(s), based on upcoming deals. Ultimately, selecting V&E Hann was based on vendor trustworthiness, integrity, experience and value (while the Hann price was not the least expensive, it was well within reason and reflected their service positioning). The installation team scheduled the job with an estimated start date and duration. They showed up exactly as planned and finished on time (no unforeseen issues came up). I was on sight working from my home office during the project and, for the most part, was unaware that they were working in the house. When finished, they checked all HVAC equipment to provide my first systems maintenance check of the year. That experience reinforced my confidence in my decision to go with V&E Hann. I waited until we actually had to use the A/C to post this. Due to the early and present Spring season that we've enjoyed, there has been no reason to run it. Now that we've had a couple of hot days, I can report that the installed system works beautifully, and just as quiet outside as advertised. I couldn't be happier with the experience.
Description of Work: I asked Hann and four other reputable service companies in the area to replace one of our two A/C units (heat exchange, compressor) and to offer details about preventative maintenance service agreement for all HVAC equipment. Representing V&E Hann, Chris Hann assessed our current HVAC equipment and home environment. Proposal submitted promptly with recommendation and options. Once I selected V&E Hann, the project date was mutually agreed to. The installation team arrived and installed new equipment, including flushing old refrigerant from existing lines and replacing it with new, environmentally friendlier version. (Using old lines was preferable due to outside appearance and disruption to existing walls/ceiling; the A/C unit is located on third floor). The first total HVAC equipment inspection as part of our new service contract was done, also.

The heater that they put in was good. They had enough guys to get the job done quickly. They showed me all that they were putting in and they put the water heater in for me. They showed me exactly what they were going to do. Then they went in and did it. They gave me a good price on it as well. They gave me $600 off the water heater and the gas heater combined. I got both done at once. The guy who owns the company comes to your house and talks to you. So, that really helps. One of the brothers came to my house and talked to me about the job. He told me exactly where it was going to go and what they were going to do. Their prices are a little bit high, but I got exactly what I paid for. I wasn’t unhappy with it. They put in a very high quality system and it’s really nicely made. The quality of their work was very good. They were very neat and very professional. They were there exactly on time. They worked straight through. There was no hanging around and going in and out all the time. They just came and worked. They explained things well to me too. I would certainly use them again in the future.

I was extremely satisfied with the service. From comments Bill and some the guys working made, they had several other jobs going on at the same time, I think one similar situation near my house with a boiler needed by Christmas, so I really appreciated the quick response and job completion. Bill told us when and how they could have it done, and met (even exceeded in this case) expectations. Their pricing is among the higher priced HVAC companies I've worked with, but was well worth it, and I think we received more personal attention than we would have from some of the other high-priced providers.
Description of Work: We discovered our boiler was rusted and leaking the week before Christmas and could stop working any time. We had two large Christmas parties planned and didn't want to lose heat unexpectedly. I left a message with V&E Hann late Sunday night, and Bill Hann called me the next morning and came out within an hour. He thoroughly went over what was wrong with our existing boiler as well as looking at the radiators and heating pipe situation in the rest of the house. He recommended ways to better position the boiler and vents to make the system more efficient. We received another estimate that was lower but basically no improvement over the existing situation, and decided to go with V&E Hann due to what seemed a higher quality solution and their quick response. V&E Hann managed to have our new boiler installed, work area cleaned, etc. by noon Friday the 23rd, a couple hours before our first party started. This included coordinating asbestos removal that needed to be done first. They were even sure to have the heat on by Thurs night to make sure there was no "new boiler smell" in the house when our guests arrived.

They have been around for a long time. They took out my old furnace which was in pieces and they put in a new furnace and air conditioner. They cleaned up everything and everything was perfect. So far it’s been good. They have been around a long time so I knew they had a good name. My overall experience was excellent. They came out the first day I called them and checked the old furnace. I suddenly had no hot water. When I went to check the water heater, the pipe that vented the heater had fallen to the floor and there was water on the floor. I called the company and they sent someone out within an hour. The technician thought the problem might be the missing pipe. The one that had been there was cracked. He went back to the shop and came back with replacement parts, which he cut to fit. Although he cut it a bit short, he had some tubing to extend it. He tested the area for carbon monoxide, which had been leaking since the pipe had fallen. He thought that the people who cleaned the gutter may have placed the ladder against the vent outside, causing the pipe to crack.

I'm not sure what happened but I got the idea that perhaps they didn't want my business and just tried to brush me off. It's difficult to specify what I found so unpleasant about my experience with Verne & Ellsworth Hann, other than to say that they didn't seem to want to help me and actually seemed rather irritated that I troubled them with my boiler problem. We purchased a foreclosed home where the copper piping was stolen from around the boiler. I called Verne & Ellsworth Hann on Monday September 19, 2011, 09:17 in hopes of receiving a quote for the replacement of the piping around the boiler and diagnosing/repairing the actual unit. The gentlemen who answered the phone was not rude but was obviously disinterested in helping me. He claimed that he needed to check their licensing in my city and placed me on hold. I couldn't imagine a HVAC/Plumbing company being in business 100 years and not knowing whether they were licensed in the neighboring suburb where a great deal of the homes have hot water boilers. But these things can happen so I waited Another gentlemen came back to the phone and seemed to be confused as to why I was calling. When I explained my situation again there was no recognition in his voice. There was NO "yes miss, we can help you with that" or " yes ma'am we fix boilers". I would've accepted " No ma'am we do not work in your city" but no...he all but asked me why didn't I call someplace else. From their ad and webpage, I assumed that Verne & Ellsworth Hann specialized in plumbing and HVAC services. So I felt it appropriate to call them about my hot water boiler. However they treated me as if perhaps I'd called the wrong number and I was wrong to call them with this type of problem. The gentlemen said that he needed to "check a few things" ( what they were... I don't know) and said that he would call me back. From his tone, I didn't think that he really would and he did not. I understand that businesses have a myriad of reasons for not wanting a job, however there are more professional ways to decline a customer. Perhaps they really aren't licensed to work in my city or maybe they just don't like to work in my city. Either way, I won't be calling them again nor can I recommend a company that doesn't take the time to properly train those who answer the phone.

I think that the company is owned by two brothers. They do plumbing work but they are basically a heating and air conditioning company. They put in a furnace for me a couple of years ago. They come by once in every six months to check the heating or the air conditioning. They will be coming out in a week and a half for the fall check. They seem very professional and I liked their style of putting the furnace in. I like the guy that comes once in every six months or so to check my equipment. I found advertising flyers of two or three heating companies when I moved into this house and I was not sure exactly who to call to start taking care of the furnace. I bought the house and I had several contractors to have some work done in the basement. I talked to the contractors as well as some other people and I ended up going with them. This company was owned by the Hann family for a long time and at one point they sold it to someone else. I am not sure about what happened after that but the Hann brothers wanted to get back in and so, they tried to buy the company back. However, they could not buy the company back. Their price may be a little bit on a higher side but I felt like I was getting good quality. My air conditioning unit is a little ancient inside and I think that I will ask them to replace it for me.

Response from Verne & Ellsworth Hann
Although we appreciate the member's kind words very much, he is slightly off on the history of the Hann Family ownership. My grandfather started another company in the early 1900’s with his 4 sons. Two of the sons wanted to pursue other career paths . In 1945 the original company was sold ending the Hann family ownership. Approximately 1 year later the two remaining sons “Verne” & “Ellsworth” Hann started this Company. Verne & Ellsworth Hann has remained under the Hann family ownership ever since. My father owned it for many years and my brother and I have owned it for the last 10 years. We have been, for over 60 years, the only Hann family owned HVAC and Plumbing Company in Cleveland and hope to continue for many more.

Woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head. Went to the bathroom to take a shower and... NO HOT WATER! I went down to the basement and it was spraying flood time! The water tank had failed at the top by the inlet and water was spraying nicely. I cut off the water to the hot water heater (using the ball valves VEH installed in a previous visit...) and called VEH. They were onsite before noon and verified what we needed. They returned a little after 1 pm with a new tank, removed the old one and installed the new one. It works most nicely. While they do not carry most major brands of water heater, the brand they carry is manufactured in the U.S.A., which is much appreciated. They cleaned up and removed the old tank. They were very professional and pleasant to work with.

No work was done because the company said they were unable to schedule a service call.
Description of Work: I called for help with a leaking waste stack. I was told a plumber would not be available either that week or the following owing to vacations. This seemed an unusual reply coming from a rather large firm employing (according to Angie's List) 17 technicians.

Response from Verne & Ellsworth Hann
We unfortunately were unable to meet the demands of the member's schedule. We were pleasant on the phone and let her know this upfront. I think it is unfair of a homeowner to give a "D" grade when no service was performed. Possibly she should be grading the Company that actually performed worked in her home. Can I as a contractor give a homeowner a "D" grade when their schedule doesn't allow the technician to come out at our convenience?
