It went very well. They came on time and finished the job on time and did all of the work just as we requested. They were professional in every aspect of the job. Very good company. Would use again.
Description of Work: They repaired the masonry on my house between the bricks and did a great job. We were very happy with the price and the quality of the work.

They did an incredible amount of work in the Indianapolis area after the hailstorm a couple of years ago. Slate roofs are supposed to last 50 years so I hope I don't have to call them. It was an insurance job. They were on time and they were very professional. We were perfectly happy with their service.
Description of Work: We used Durable Slate after a hailstorm. They removed the old slate roof and the paper underneath. They replaced damaged wood, reinstalled new paper, replaced broken tiles and put the old tiles that were still okay back on and resealed the roof.

Durable Slate was completely professional from beginning to end. Their back office sent me the estimate via email and the estimator, Dave Tepe, was very helpful in explaining the work to be performed. He did not try to upsell me. The technicians were at the property from 9am to 7pm, and were professional and courteous, cleaning the yard prior to leaving. Their work appears to be of quality and I could tell they cared about their craft. At no additional cost, they tacked the under part of a box gutter to the frame in an effort to keep birds out. Slate Roofs are expensive but I am learning that a little preventive maintenance goes a long way. Durable Slate is a good company and I will use them again.
Description of Work: Durable Slate performed the following work: -Replaced approximately 10 missing/broken slates -Reflashed the chimney in soldered steel -Installed strainers in all outlets -Reattached a downspout

We started to have problems right after the estimate - the person who looked at the roof left the company so there were issues with the handoffs. However, once that got settled, things proceeded fairly smoothly. It took a little longer than estimated to start the work - they started about 3 weeks later than estimated. When it started the work proceeded fairly smoothly. However, they were unbelievably bad with site clean-up and threw hundreds of nails all over the lawn and gardens surrounding the house. They threw so much debris in the fish pond that we had to drain it There were a few areas that were done pretty sloppily and we had them redo one area. They told me that they would sauter a few holes in our gutters caused by the hail, but that was not done and we are hiring someone else The worst was that the two guys doing the work told us that our flat roof also needed work and wanted to do it under a separate contract -with a 7 year warranty. After I agreed, I noticed that the contract was with the two roofers, not Durable Slate. After it was done we had a rain storm and water poured into our back room. Luckily they were still doing work in the area, so they fixed that issue. It is now a year later and we noticed that the flat roof is not draining right and the gutters are still leaking. I called Durable slate and they put me in touch with the guy who did the work. He said that they are no longer doing work in Indianapolis - but would try to get over and look at it. It has now been 6 months and several phone calls - no luck. I cannot tell if it is the company or the guys who did the work - but I would not use either of them again.

Once we got the job defined and a quote, it just took time to fit this small job into the overall schedule. The work was performed quite well even though the Owner was not present. Being able to trust a company to do a thorough and complete job without having to watch them is a measure of the trust we have in Durable Slate.

So far, they won't respond to my calls.
Description of Work: The Durable Slate Co. has come to my home three times in the last two years to estimate the cost and then repair the leak in my Victorian turret peak where they installed a weather vane. Three times, they failed to follow up with an estimate or repair. They have been my roofing company for 20 years but they failed to respond after several follow up calls to their offices. They would seem like the logical choice for repairing a leak that occurs at the site of their previous work. I didn't see this as a warranty issue. I assumed I would pay the bill. I just want my leak fixed.

Durable Slate was very responsive during the estimating and quoting phase. They were willing to significantly reduce their offer price by 30% in attempt to secure job and to get price under insurance reimbursement. However, final offer was still $10K over what insurance was willing to reimburse. Their higher cost structure stems from using US citizen labor and investing more in equipment and safety. I wanted to use Durable Slate because I was confident that they would do a high quality job. However, I was unwilling to pay that much out of pocket. I wish insurance was willing to step up, but they didn't.

I selected a contractor who could also do the flat roof on my garage AND work with my insurance company.
Description of Work: Dave Cosgrove of Durable Slate provided an estimate to replace the slate roof on my 80-year old Meridian Kessler home (hail damage). Over a period of several weeks Dave attempted to reach agreement with my insurance company on the scope. I was very comfortable with the company's ability to perform the work and with their references in my neighborhood.

They helped us get a fair settlement from our insurance company. The guys maintained an orderly and clean job site with daily cleanups. There was no damage to our landscaping. The workers were courteous and answered our questions. They were flexible with a unique situation-adding insulation to a small enclosed roof space. This one time opportunity happened since they worked with us. The overall quality of the job was superb. The new roof is BETTER than the original roof that was built with the house. The prep work to replace unsuitable roof boards, the protection of the roof with the heavy builder's felt, the skill with which the copper flashing was applied, the attention to detail in laying the slate and the flashing, the care in finishing the copper roof segments all demonstrated craftsmanship which is not seen by other slate roofing companies doing work in the area. I would and have recommended Durable Slate to anyone needing a slate roof for their building.
Description of Work: After hail damage, provided cost estimate to replace roof. ACTIVELY worked with insurance company to get my claim accepted since initial insurance was unacceptably low and unrealistic. Stripped off old slate roof, procured slate and installed new slate roof with copper flashing. Repaired selected damage on slate garage roof.

It was obvious that to the untrained eye that there was damage. I asked why the other company said there was no damage. He said it was possible they didn't bother to get up on the roof. I called the Durable Slate and Tile company offices in Ohio with my concern. The person who answered the phone took my complaint and would have the "president" of the company call me. That was a week ago and I have heard nothing. The cost of replacing my roof and gutters is significant and needless to say I would not recommend the Durable Slate and Tile company to anyone. Had I stuck with their opinion I would have had major water damage to the interior of my home over the next few years.
Description of Work: I live in the Meridian Kessler Neighborhood. The recent hail storms created significant damage to roof structures. I called the Durable Slate and Tile company for an inspection of my tile roof. I was told there was no need for me to be there at the time of the inspection. The representative reported that the was no damage and my roof was in good shape. My neighbors who have a slate roof where using another company as their roof had significant damage as well as my neighbors on the other side of my house. I thought I had better get a second opinion from a different contractor. I had a representative from the company my neighbors used come out. He was on the roof for sometime and used a digital camera to take pictures. He showed me the pictures. I was told that I not only have extensive damage to my roof but to the gutters as well.

AFTER LAUNCHING A FULL-SCALE INVESTIGATION INTO THIS NEGATIVE REPORT AND REVIEWING DETAILED PHOTOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTATION OF THE ROOF CONDITION, I STAND BEHIND OUR ESTIMATOR’S EVALUATION OF THE MEMBER'S ROOF. INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE ONLY LIABLE FOR SUDDEN AND UNFORESEEN CATASTROPHE, AS CLEARLY STATED IN EVERY HOMEOWNER INSURANCE POLICY I HAVE EVER BEEN INVOLVED WITH. AS I HAVE ABSOLUTE PROOF THAT THERE IS NO STORM DAMAGE ON THE MEMBER'S ROOF, HIS NEGATIVE REPORT IN ANGIE’S LIST IS FALSE. THE MEMBER'S REPORT ACCUSES US OF DOING SOMETHING OF WHICH WE ARE INNOCENT. THIS REPORT IS INJURIOUS TO THE DURABLE SLATE COMPANY AND IN ALL FAIRNESS SHOULD BE REMOVED. I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE MEMBER CONCERNING THIS INCIDENT AND APOLOGIZED IN WRITING FOR ANY POSSIBLE MISCOMMUNICATION THAT OUR COMPANY HAS HAD WITH HIM. HOWEVER, EVEN WHEN PROVIDED WITH PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE OF THE ACTUAL CONDITION OF HIS ROOF, HE REMAINS UNMOVED. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO RESOLVE THIS SITUATION. With an old home you have 2 choices, do it the right way or do it the cheap way. Durable Slate has a reputation for being the ''gold standard'' of historic home roofing and gutter repair and there is good reason. From start to finish, these guys have been amazing. Their work is superior, they are on time and work a full day each and every day. They do not rush a job and don't stop until everything is perfect. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for and they are the best. They work they did on our home ensures that these gutters will last for 75 years. They were pleasant, reliable, and did a marvelous job of keeping the worksite as neat as possible at the end of each day. The foreman even offered to take my digital camera up the ladder with him to take photos for me of each phase of the job. I got a birds eye view and records of the rebuild for my files. I have NOTHING but praise for Durable Slate and would recommend them always. You get what you pay for.

DURABLE SLATE IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY. THEIR PEOPLE ARE CONSCIENTIOUS, KNOWLEDGEABLE, AND PROFESSIONAL, AND THEY TRULY CARE ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THEIR WORK AND REPUTATION. I HAVE EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE WITH THE BUILDING TRADES AND HISTORIC RESTORATION FIRMS OF ALL TYPES. THEY ARE AMONG THE BEST. I DID TRY ANOTHER FIRM FOR A SMALL ROOF JOB, BECAUSE THE PRICE WAS MORE ATTRACTIVE, BUT THAT WAS A MISTAKE. WORK BY DURABLE SLATE IS WIDELY RESPECTED, BEAUTIFULLY DONE, AND A REAL ASSET TO THE VALUE OF ONE'S HOME. I'M A LEARNED CYNIC WHEN IT COMES TO CONSTRUCTION AND RESTORATION. YOU CAN TRUST THIS RECOMMENDATION.
Description of Work: DURABLE SLATE HAS WORKED FOR US SEVERAL TIMES SINCE WE'VE OWNED THIS 1916 HOME, BUT THIS IS THEIR MOST AMBITIOUS PROJECT TO DATE. THEY RELINED OUR BOX GUTTERS WITH COPPER, AND ADDED COPPER DOWNSPOUTS. IN THE PROCESS, THEY HAD TO LIFT THE GUTTERS, PERFORM EXTENSIVE CARPENTRY REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT, AND ADJUST THEIR SLOPE. THEY ALSO REPLACED THE HIPS AND RIDGES IN OUR ROOF, AND ADDED COPPER CAPS WHERE NEEDED.

THEY RECOMMENDED A COMPLETE TEAR-OFF AND REDO OF THE REAR OF THE HOUSE FOR OVER $18,000. TWO OTHER ROOFERS HAVE SAID THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNNECESSARY AND THE ROOF CAN BE FIXED FOR LESS THAN HALF (STILL A LOT OF MONEY!) Response from The Durable Slate Co
SOME ROOFING COMPANIES DO NOT THOROUGHLY UNDERSTAND THE REQUIREMENTS OF MAINTAINING TILE ROOFS. THE TILE ITSELF DOESN''T KEEP ALL OF THE WATER OUT OF A BUILDING. IT KEEPS MOST OF IT OUT, AND IT PROTECTS THE FELT UNDERLAYMENT WHICH KEEPS THE REST OF THE WATER OUT. ONE OF THE PRINCIPALS OF DURABLE SLATE REGULARLY SPEAKS AT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL PRESERVATION CONFERENCES INSTRUCTING OTHER ROOFERS ON TILE ROOF MAINTENANCE. IN THIS INSTANCE, WE GAVE THE HOMEOWNER WHAT WE CONSIDERED WAS THE BEST ADVICE FOR THE SITUATION WITH THIS ROOF. THERE WAS BARE WOOD SHOWING IN MANY LOCATIONS ON THE REAR ROOF OF THIS HOUSE – BOTH WHERE TILES WERE MISSING AND, IN SOME LOCATIONS, WHERE THE FELT PAPER UNDER THE TILES HAD SIMPLY DETERIORATED. IT COULD BE POSSIBLE TO PUT PATCHES OF FELT PAPER DOWN HERE AND THERE TO DO A SPOTTY “LIFT AND RE-LAY” IN INDIVIDUAL AREAS. HOWEVER WHEN FELT PAPER IS 80 YEARS OLD, IT ISN’T GOING TO LAST LONG. PATCHING WOULD HAVE PRODUCED ONLY A TEMPORARY FIX.

I WAS UNSURE ABOUT THE CAUSE OF LEAKING ON A FLAT PORTION OF MY ROOF THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN REPAIRED WITH RUBBER MEMBRANE. DURABLE SLATE GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE AREA WITH COPPER. I ASKED SEVERAL TIMES IF THEY WERE SURE THAT THE CAUSE OF THE LEAKING WAS THE MEMBRANE AND WAS GIVEN THE RUN AROUND. I FINALLY CALLED SEVERAL OTHER COMPANIES WHO SAID THE MEMBRANE WAS IN PERFECT SHAPE AND REFERRED ME TO A MASON FOR TUCKPOINTING! IF I'M GOING TO SPEND $16,000.00 I WOULD LIKE MY LEAK FIXED, NOT JUST A SHINY COPPER ROOF THAT I DON'T NEED! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DURABLE SLATE TO ANYONE.
