Very good experience with this company overall. On time for the estimate. Mature man who knew the business and product and answered our questions thoroughly. They came and did the work while we were away and when I called and asked where the bill was they said, "We don't bill until we inspect the work and we have an inspector scheduled to inspect the work today." They gave us the amount but haven't yet received the bill yet.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced old gutters with new larger gutters and installed gutter shields. Also replaced downspouts with larger ones.

I challenged him, and he ended up apologizing for the confusion, that we think he caused but said we'd be liable for the charges anyway because we signed the contract. As we perused the contract more thoroughly, we noticed some concerning points: ''Any other agreements [than the written statements] entered into between the salesman and the purchaser will not be honored and any waivers or modifications shall not be valid unless attached hereto in writing and signed by both parties." Translation: "Doesn't matter WHAT a salesman TELLS you, it's meaningless unless he writes it down and you both sign it." Worse: Upon completion of the job, you are to inspect our work. Failure to notify us of any defect within 10 days after completion will be construed that the job is acceptable." I'M not a roofer, yet they say I'm qualified to assess a roofer's work. Zero's work is NOT guaranteed and if there's a problem, it's because the CUSTOMER didn't see a problem with their work.
Description of Work: We called for an estimate, they sent a guy out quickly. He was nice and thorough enough. But when we were wrapping things up, he slid a paper out, made some vague comments about who we call IF we want the work done and wanted us to sign the paper. Admittedly, we didn't look at the sheet close enough to see he was having us sign a CONTRACT. He did not explain in any detail that the sheet was a contract for them to do work. He made it sound like we were signing a form verifying he was there and the price on the estimate. We were shocked a week later when without us scheduling ANYTHING or them calling us to say they were coming, there were two guys crawling onto our roof at 8am! We said to leave because we didn't agree to the work nor had we called to schedule them to come out. We got an angry call from the estimator SURE he told us we were signing a contract, he didn't, and said we'd probably have to pay a service fee ($150!) for the guys literally showing up then leaving.

Response from Tecta America Zero Company LLC
THE PAPER THE CUSTOMER REFERS TO SAYS "CONTRACT" IN BOLD ACROSS THE TOP. THE LINE WHERE THE CUSTOMER SIGNED IS PRECEDED BY "ACCEPTANCE BY OWNER OR AGENT". WE DO NOT BELIEVE IN DECEPTIVE SALES AND FEEL THAT A REASONABLE CUSTOMER WOULD KNOW THEY SIGNED A CONTRACT. REGARDING THE CONTRACT WORDING, MOST CONTRACTS (CAR, HOME IMP, LANDSCAPE) HAVE SIMILAR LANGUAGE AND LIMIT THE SCOPE OF WORK TO LISTED ITEMS. THEY EXCLUDE VERBAL AGREEMENTS FOR OBVIOUS REASONS TO PROTECT BOTH PARTIES. A CONTRACT IS A LEGAL DOCUMENT AND SHOULD BE REVIEWED PRIOR TO SIGNING FOR ACCURACY; IF SOMETHING IS NOT INCLUDED AND IS IMPORTANT THE CUSTOMER SHOULD INSERT APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE PRIOR TO SIGNING. AN INSPECTION CLAUSE IS STANDARD IN THE INDUSTRY. WE ARE ASKING THE CUSTOMER TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR INSPECTING THE WORK TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY AFTER COMPLETION. THIS IS SO WE CAN FIX OBVIOUS ISSUES QUICKLY AND ELIMINATE PROBLEMS MONTHS DOWN THE LINE, WHEN THE JOB IS NOT FRESH IN EVERYBODY'S MIND. ALSO, BECAUSE THE ROOF IS SUBJECT TO MANY FORCES, THE SOONER AN ISSUE IS BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION, THE LESS POTENTIAL THERE IS FOR DISAGREEMENT REGARDING THE ACTUAL CAUSE. WE OFFER WARRANTIES ON JOBS WHERE THE ROOF CONDITION MEETS CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS. WE SPECIFICALLY NOTE IN OUR PROPOSALS IF WE EXCLUDE A WARRANTY. FINALLY, IF YOU LOOK AT OUR HISTORICAL RATINGS AND CUSTOMER COMMENTS, IT IS OBVIOUS WE TREAT OUR CUSTOMERS FAIRLY. WE HAVE VERY HIGH RATINGS BECAUSE WE ARE ETHICAL AND REASONABLE.

What a professional company. The rep who came to look at the job gently explained that considering the age of the roof and the extent of the leak, it was more cost effective to get a new roof. He was very knowledgeable and explained the job clearly. He also talked to me about options for upgrades and gutter work but was frank in ranking the importance of which jobs should be done now and which ones could wait. He also pointed out problems that might come up with the job (like cracked dormer boards) that would add to the cost but could not be determined until the job began. I liked having the surprises taken out of the experience. I received a written estimate the next day.

John Sipes came out to check out the leak and discovered a rubber gasket had cracked. He checked all the other rubber gaskets, while on the roof and determinded that only one had cracked. He answered all my questions and provided me with quote within a few days of my initial call to the company. The repair was done within a couple of weeks, after I signed the quote approval. No more leaks.
Description of Work: Since Zero Roofing had replaced our roof in 1998, we contacted them when a leak developed. The warranty had expired on the part, a rubbler gasket, that had started leaking. John looked at the roof, sent me a quote and the repair, was done within 2 weeks of my approval of the quote.

They were very professional and prompt! I called to get an appt for an estimator to come to our house. They came within 2 days, exactly when they told me they would. They spent 1/2 hour with my wife and showed her what to do. They also provided a clear written quote. I was very happy. We went with someone else, but these guys treat you very well!

The Zero Company was awesome. They showed up everyday by 8 am. Every night when we came home, the area was clear of debris. Our neighbors watched them work while we were gone and were very impressed with how meticulous they were. One of the best things about this company is they hand nail as opposed to using air guns. Research from hurricane areas show that hand nailed roofs hold up better because you can tell if you hit a stud. The products they used were excellent, and it has been two months since the roof was done, and we have had some serious rain, and there are no signs of leaks. We also had gotten 2 other quotes by companies who would use air guns, and it would only take 1 day as opposed to 3. The Zero Company happened to be the least expensive, but we chose them because they hand nailed, and we felt like they were honest. The other reason we chose them was because they were one of the only companies that would touch box gutters. They did a great job on those as well.
Description of Work: They took off 3 layers of shingles, replaced rotted boards, put a new layer of shingles on, and lined our box gutters.

The experience was wonderful. The estimator who came out was very honest and helpful, and gave me tips on how to fix things now to avoid problems in the future. He offered to use some spare wood that I had for some of the repairs to save $$. The repairmen were prompt, pleasant, and quick. They did a really good job and came in at half of the other two bids I received.

We had a leak in the room under the chimney; company representative spent fair amount of time assessing the problem and discussing it with me, pointing out that he couldn't guarantee that fixing the chimney would solve the problem and also that they normally don't do chimney work. He also found two more problem spots on the roof that I hadn't been aware of. Workers came a couple of days later, finished the job quickly and efficiently. I guess as a layperson, I have these weird notions of how much time a repair job costing $400 dollars should take; and the guys were really, really fast, but hey, it looks good, the leaking has stopped (as far as I can tell), and the final cost was exactly what they said it would be. I have no idea if this could be done cheaper. Very happy so far.

The rep was polite, earnest and said that it would be at least $150 to climb roof for estimate. $150 turned out to be what we were charged. The rep came out on a Thursday (5/25) and the work was done on Monday (5/29). The contractor arrived early (before 8 a.m.), but knocked on the door to let me know he would do the work.

It took a little while in between the quoting and the actual work to begin. I had to prompt the Zero Company once or twice to find out when the work crew was going to come out and begin the work. In all fairness, it rained a lot between when they told me they would begin and when the work actually began. That is my only complaint. When they did arrive, they worked quickly. They pointed out the rotten wood and suggested a few options for repairing this. When they were done, they cleaned up around the work area nicely. I will hire them again as I replace the other box gutters around the rest of the house in the next few years.
Description of Work: Had one of our box gutters repaired. Also had a small gutter installed above another roof dormer. While in the process of replacing the box gutter, the installers discovered that a lot of the wood had rotted away, so they also replaced the wood in the rafters. They also re-flashed our chimney to better water proof it.

During the first REALLY HEAVY rain of the season, my roof began to leak . Water was running into an overhead light fixture. The trouble occurred on a weekend. After consulting Angie's List, I called 3 companies. The Zero Co. was the first to respond. They were also the only company that had an emergency technician on call. We decided that they would come on Monday (a very helpful suggestion that saved me from paying weekend rates.) Dale arrived after a phone call to tell me he was en route. He looked at the roof and showed me what he deemed to be the cause of my leak. He gave me several choices as to what I might do, made recommendations. I chose to patch the suspect leaks and then coat the roof with a protective non-asbestos surface. The work was done within a day or two of contracting the work. The work area was left immaculate when they were done. It has rained (hard) several times since, and I have not seen any evidence of a problem since the work was completed. Great job !

We were in the process of selling our house and we needed someone to come out and look at our roof in a short time frame. Jim Harris came out to talk to me about the roof, and even though it wasn't the safest time to get on the roof (it was a little slick with ice), he got up so he could give me an accurate assessment. I really appreciated his effort as we needed to respond to the buyers later that day. We didn't hire them only because we are going to give the buyers cash back at closing.

THE ROOF IS OLD (18 YEARS) AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED SOON, BUT WHEN THEY EVALUATED THE SITUATION THEY GAVE ME THE CHOICE OF SPENDING $100 ON A JOB THAT WOULD LAST A FEW MONTHS (IN CASE I WAS GOING TO REPLACE THE WHOLE ROOF SOON ANYWAY), OR A $1000 JOB THAT WOULD HOLD FOR MUCH LONGER (IN CASE I WANTED TO SEE HOW LONG I COULD STRETCH OUT THIS ROOF). I APPRECIATED THAT THEY GAVE ME THESE OPTIONS AND GAVE ME GOOD ADVICE ABOUT THE LENGTH OF TIME I HAVE LEFT ON THE CURRENT ROOF. THEY DID A GREAT JOB WITH THE REPAIR, AND BROUGHT US UP ON THE ROOF DURING THE PROJECT TO EXPLAIN THE PROBLEM AND SHOW US EXACTLY WHAT THEY WERE DOING TO FIX IT. I WILL CALL THEM FIRST WHEN IT IS TIME FOR A NEW ROOF.
