The electrician who came to do the work called before coming out and arrived at the appointed hour. My first impression of Gary Clark was his professional appearance. He was well groomed and wearing clean appropriate work clothes. Gary scoped the work and then worked up a price to do the job before beginning. After agreeing to the quote he proceeded to install the outdoor lights. He encountered some problems in replacing a light that had been installed incorrectly when our house was built but was able to work through the issues and completed the job. For the indoor work Gary put on shoe covers to keep from tracking dirt into the house. Although Gary has installed a lot of ceiling fans he was unfamiliar with the brand we had purchased. No problem, however. It didn't take him long to figure out what parts were needed and what parts weren't. Gary pointed out some bad wiring when he removed one of the fans and said he was surprised the fan hadn't shorted out at some point. He repaired the problem. Both fans had remote controls, but I had purchased an additional wall switch to control the fan and fan light. Gary installed the wall switch and it required a new cover plate - two switch, one style line plate. He didn't have one on his truck so called his shop and a co-worker drove it out to our house, nice service. Gary removed the old fans and lights and took them with him. Overall excellent experience with Gary and Nelson Comfort. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this company and will definitely be using Nelson Comfort for my future electrical needs.
Description of Work: We purchased two ceiling fans and two out door lights to replace those that had become old and disfunctional. I chose Nelson Comfort to do the work because of their record and proximity to our house.

He showed up a little later than I expected but no problem. He checked my system in the basement, outside, and the themostat. He always covered his shoes prior to entering the house. The AC is wroking much better than before. I am very pleased with the results.
Description of Work: I took advantage of an Angie's Dig Deal Offer. Took the offer and someone called me back promptly to set up a date for service. Service man checked AC. It appears to have done a very thorough job. He was very pleasant and professional.

The cost of an inspection was about $100 less than the first electric company I called. Gary arrived exactly on time, and did a very thorough inspection. He found an outlet with the wires hooked up backward and he went ahead and fixed it for us at no additional charge. While we were there, I noticed that the garage door openers weren't able to be plugged in, so he gave us an estimate for how much it would cost to have outlets installed for them, and he used an extension cord to check them for me and see if they work. Overall, he was very nice and helpful. We will definitely be calling Gary and Nelson Electric for all of our electrical needs after we purchase the house.
Description of Work: I called Nelson Electric to do an inspection on a home we are buying, because our first home inspector was unable to tell us anything about the electricity in the house.

The AC went out and it was over 90 degree's out. I called a company we had used before but they could not come out until the next day in the afternoon. I looked on Angie's list and found 2 companies that were close by that had gotten good ratings. The first one could come the next day so I called the second one, which was Nelson's. I told them I was trying to find someone to come out today (it was about 2 in the afternoon by this time). He said no problem, he could have someone over in about 1-2 hours. I set them up to come. They called when they were about 30 minutes away. My husband stayed out side with the guy and the guy told him exactly what he was doing. First he checked one thing and it worked fine. Next he checked another thing. He told my husband exactly what he was checking and why. So my husband was able to see when he checked the capacitor that it was the thing not working. He went and got one from his truck and installed it. They turned the AC back on and it worked just fine then. We were thrilled that they were able to come so quickly and my husband said the technician was very professional and helpful. I would definitely recommend this company highly. We were so pleased.

Greg was spectacular and I plan on specifically asking for him on similar service in the future. It went very well.
Description of Work: I came home two weeks ago to a leaking water heater. I had house guests, and didn't have time to replace my gas water heater myself, nor was I confident in changeing the gas lines. I had used Nelson Comfort just a couple weeks before to clean and service my air conditioner. That went well, so I thought I would check with them. I called Nelson Comfort on Thursday morning. I spoke with them and they had a sales person call me later in the morning. He explained the costs of the differing products. I was interested in the tankless water heaters, but in speaking with the sales person about my needs and use, he helped me decide on a less costly 40 gal tank standard water heater. I appreciated his information as he could easily have just sold me the much more costly tankless heater. The next day, Greg, the service technician came right on time to install the heater. He was professional, courteous, and kept me informed of what he was doing. He was absolutely terrific and even worked with me to get a discount for being an Angie's list client when the coupon I had didn't direcly apply. I chose Nelson comfort because of their recommendations on Angie's list and I am going to continue to use them because of the great service.

Extremely impressed. I called before hours began on a weekday. I left a message, and they actually returned my call within a couple of minutes of the start of their day. Even though we were in a terrible heat spell, they came the same day. The serviceman (Russ) was on time, courteous, and professional. He didn't try to convince us we needed a new unit. He made the repairs quickly. This is how business should be conducted. A+.

Overall my dealing with Nelson's was excellent - I am very pleased.
Description of Work: Nelson's was great! They listened to what I wanted and came to the house to give the estimate. The gentleman who came out talked with my adult son, as I could not take off work - and explained everything to him, from the removal of the 1953 furnace to the different types of furnaces that we could put in and what the difference was, and the thermostats. My son and I talked it over and after obtaining three more estimates that were all in the same ball-park, we decided on Nelson. They were not put off that I could not be there, but were very thorough in explaining everything to my son - two of the companies could almost hardly be bothered to write the estimate down! The third sent his estimate through the mail, but not on the equipment that I had requested information on. Nelson's came and installed the new furnace, and it looks great. My son told me that it works - I am sure that they didn't have it on for long in this heat - but this company has been around a while and everyone that my son dealt with - and those I spoke to on the phone were extremely customer service savvy - and I'm not worried about when the cold sets in. I will use them again when the other furnace, an old octopus that keeps on working - needs to be replaced!

The work was supposed to be about $700, but it ended up being about $500 because they did not replace the ceiling fan. They just hooked up the loose wire, and I saved $200 because of that. I wasn’t at home but my husband was, and they told him that they had reconnected the wire. He was busy doing something with the kids, so he thought that was what I had hired them to do and didn’t realize that they were supposed to replace it. They did connect the lamp, but the first time it rained, the electricity went out in half the house because the lamp they had connected blew a fuse; they had not wired the lamp right. I think they told me it would cost another $375 to wire the lamp, and that was probably because they had to wire the length of the yard. I thought that since I had already paid for the work, there would be some sort of warranty on it but there wasn’t. I had hired them to replace the attic fan with a quiet one with a thermostat connected for humidity and heat, and instead, they just hooked the wire up on the old fan, and it is rattling away up there making a horrible sound. When they looked at the ceiling fan, they said that it was a remote controlled ceiling fan, and somebody had wired it to both the wall and the remote. When someone turned the light switch off, the ceiling fan didn’t go on when they turned it on with the remote, and it burned out things around the ceiling fan; it wasn’t their fault, but they said that they could not fix it as it needed a new motor. I ended up with nothing being resolved. I would not hire an electrician in the future unless they guarantee the work. They were very nice and showed up on time. They were polite and professional. Their price of $100 an hour is about average for an electrician. I would recommend that people make sure that they are at home when they do the work and supervise the work. Only one of the things that I had hired them to do is working. They were good about calling back; they called back within 24 hours. I thought I was going to get great work done, but it was normal. They were not interested in giving a discount or some sort of warranty on the work that they already did. I would not use them again in the future.

Response from Nelson Comfort
Nelson Comfort strives to meet and exceed every customer’s expectations. We guarantee all work performed for one year. Nelson Comfort always recommends that the customer requesting service or repairs be on site during the estimate and service so that nothing is misinterpreted. In this case Member was not available to be on site and all information was relayed through Member. After reviewing the work performed for Member we have found the issues in question are not warranty issues therefore would not validate warranty or discounted repairs. Below is a timeline and description of the work that was request, quoted and performed. On May 26th we provided Member with a free written estimate to trouble shoot and repair post light, attic fan motor, power to ceiling fan, outlet in family room and run a 3-way switch loop for light in family room not to exceed $949.00.This estimate was approved and we returned on May 31st to perform the quoted repairs. Ceiling Fan - After trouble shooting the ceiling fan in the family room our tech found it had been wired incorrectly which caused the motor to go out. Our tech did not do the 3way loop repair at this time due to the fan needing to be replaced. This work would be performed once the fan was replaced. Our tech informed Member of the problem and recommended replacing the fan. Outlet in family room - After trouble shooting the outlet in the family room our tech found there was no problem with the outlet; it is wired to a light switch to turn off and on. Attic Fan - After trouble shooting the attic fan our tech found there was no power to the fan. After tracing the wire he found the wire had come loose in a junction box in a bedroom in the front of the house. Our tech repaired the connection and tested operation on the attic fan. There were no further problems with the fan at that time. Post Light - Our tech checked the post light and found a bad switch timer. This was preventing the post light from getting power. The switch timer was replaced with a toggle switch. (This was approved by Member) All repairs that were completed were approved by Member. Total cost for work completed was $439.00 On June 28th Member called and was having an issue with the post light again and wanted another tech to recheck the work that was performed on May 31st. Another electrician was sent out at no charge and verified that all previous work was done correctly. Our technician did find a short in the wire feeding the post light and recommended replacing wire. A quote was provided to feed a new line to the post light and replace the toggle switch (which was approved by Member on May 31st) with a timer. This quote also included rewiring the fan switches in the dining room so that a new fan would not be burned up like the existing fan. Quote for these repairs was $325.00. The total for the work completed on May 31st ($439.00) plus the work quoted on June 28th ($325.00) is still below the initial quote of $949.00. We have made several calls since May 28th to complete this work but have been unsuccessful in reaching Member. Calls were made to Member on May 28th and July 1st with no response.

First off I was not aware that Nelson bought Hilliards until Nelson called back when I knew I called Hilliards. They did not warn me of any service charge and there was a fee. Secondly, they said my doorbell was worn out, which I believed and replaced with a new one. I offered to go with them, but they said “no no no, I can pick it up.” He came back with a box; I had a two-tone door bell. He opens the box and this is a doorbell. I asked for a receipt and he did not furnace me a receipt, additionally he should have left the old doorbell with me and he did not. I am not too happy with Nelson. Hilliards was fabulous. They should have identified the fact that there would be a diagnostic fee. I did not get to pick out the door bell and I did not get a receipt and I was still charged for it. I also wish he would not have taken the old equipment with him. He should have at least asked me if I would like them to take the doorbell and now I don’t know what they put in. They just had very questionable business practice.

I chose Nelson off of your list and called them. It was not an emergency since all other lines were working, but Joe came out to take a look within two hours of calling them. I called at three in the afternoon. He did some checking. He said he had another stop and would return the next morning around 8:30 AM. He did, and was here within 15 minutes of that time. He worked for about two hours and fixed the burned out line. It was not easy to find and he had to test every plug in the house and climbed up in the loft several times. I had run a line into the house to run the freezer and booster to the cable TV line. When Joe was finished he made sure everthing was plugged back in and running properly before he left, including my computer upstairs. Joe was pleasant and professional as he went about his work. I need the electrical panel updated. He mentioned that, but did not pressure me to get it right now. I will definetly use them again.
Description of Work: The men cleaning my gutters were using an electric blower plugged into an outside socket, when they shorted out the electric to one circut. Joe traced the problem to a plug on the wall inside the house and nowhere near the short and fixed it. . .

I spent a little more than $4200 on that service. They filed Duke Energy and got me a tax credit and provided me paper work to file for income tax to get the energy credit deduction. There were actually two furnaces that were made by the same company, but with a different name. The other company was a little cheaper, so I was going to go with them, but this company came down and matched the price, so I used them because I knew somebody that worked for them. I would tell others that I don?t know a lot about their electric and I think that is a new service they are offering and they gave me a coupon for that I think if I wanted any electric work done. I think that they responded fairly quickly and it took them all day to do the work. I had to be somewhere that day and the installers made sure that everything I needed done or they needed done they got done before I left. I thought that they were very accommodating according to my schedule. They responded pretty quickly to present me with a quote. I think that their pricing was fairly competitive. When I took my daughter to school and got back they were here.

Very pleased. When Joe called back (this was a Sunday and the answering service passed a message to him) he explained the charges up front. When he arrived about 45 minutes later, he looked at the box, did some work, then showed us the problem and how he fixed it. Joe explained that the loose lugs caused poor connections, which made the wire heat up and melt the covering on the wire. He tightened all the connections. I ran some appliances to make sure the problem was solved and it was. Joe even called back later to make sure everything was working ok.
Description of Work: Sunday morning - smelled something from my circuit breaker box - Joe was here in about 45 minutes and tightened some connections and showed us where the wire had gotten hot and caused the smell.

Other electricians came out and estimated having to open up the wall (requiring repair, painting and more $$). Joe Holt (from Nelson) came out and said he thought he could work around the existing structure and electrical boxes to minimize or eliminate needing to open up the wall. He quoted me the job at considerable savings but said that if he was wrong and he had to open up the wall, the estimate would stand. When it was all said and done, Joe got the wiring installed with no damage to the existing wall. It took him a bit of creative "gap finding" and he had to drill a couple of holes in the basement walls (to gain access to the family room wall). In and out in two hours with no mess left behind. If I'd have known it would be this easy, I'd have had it down years ago.

When I called to make an appointment the woman that answered the phone had never heard of Angies List big deal. Thats a good way to start. I finally got an appointment and the inspection was conducted on 11/11/2010. There were three recommendations. The first was to run a dedicated line to the microwave ($210), the second to repair a TV outlet ($114) and the third to do something to the water line because I had installed a Culligan system that disrupted grounding??? The technician was not sure how to handle it so he said, "We will follow up with cost to repair" That is the last I ever heard from this company. They also gave me a $25 coupon to use if I had the work done. However, the coupon had expired several weeks before they gave it to me. I am not happy with Angies List for this referral.

I have an annual maintenance and service contract with Nelson. During the summer AC call, the freon level was low and a leak was detected in our 17 year old coil inside the furnace. We called Tom Mounce at Nelson to discuss a new AC system. Tom came out to check our system and gave us a quote on a Bryant AC to replace our Carrier system. Before acting on this quote, I learned that there was still a 1500 tax credit available on replacing the furnace. Although the furnace was still working, the tax credit significantly reduced the overall cost of also replacing the furnace so we had Tom quote on replacing both the furnace and AC at the same time. We agreed to the quote and set an installation date. The installation date fell on the day that the rain, the first in six weeks, was forecast. Nevertheless, Greg arrived at 8:00 AM and started the removal of the old system. Soon he was joined by Rob and Bruce. They worked without a noticeable break and the system was in place, ready to use by 4:00 PM. Rob and Bruce worked in the rain to install the outside AC compressor. Before leaving, they cleaned up everything and left the furnace room/laundry spotless. Greg took the time to explain several things about the new furnace and the AC which has the most current freon refrigerant. Tom Mounce took care of submitting the warranty registrations to Bryant and getting copies of the completed warranty documents to me. I really enjoyed this total process and the equipment is working flawlessly.
Description of Work: Installation of new furnace and air conditioner.
