I used Hilliard Electric in the past and was very pleased so I called this company - that bought Hilliard a few years ago. Was given a flat fee over the phone that was very competitive and an electrician came out exactly when scheduled at 8 am in the morning. I was surprised that they sent only one worker. He evaluated what I needed and called in to order the parts. He began working outside as he waited for parts to arrive but the worker who was to bring them never came! He left to drive back to the company to get the parts which made me wonder if I had made a mistake in hiring this company. After about 30 minutes he returned with the parts and another worker. The 2 of them worked for about 7 hours with very few breaks. After the second worker was done connecting everything inside the first electrician finished outside and helped me label all of the breakers as I went through the house plugging things in and turning on switches. He left after 6 pm. If he was not able to get a second electrician to help him he would have had to come back the next day to finish or stay until midnight - of course the elctricity was turned off when he first started working in the morning. The city inspector a couple of days later said they did a very good job. I give this company all A's with his review. The new owner better keep the Hilliard electricians happy in this new company because I still think they are very good. I think if 2 electricians showed up at once with all the parts they thought they would need for the job it would have been a more smooth day for us all. Overall, still very good work!
Description of Work: Electrical service upgrade from 100 amps to 200 amps. Removal of old breaker box and replaced with new breakers and box. Installed new wiring from top of house at city's attachment point to the meter and from meter to the new breaker box. Installed new grounding connections.

Tom provided some basic explanation of the furnaces - single stage vs two stage, variable speed. But he didn't take any measurements of the house and quoted me a furnace that was almost twice as big as I needed. The price was a little higher than the company I went with, and that company gave me much more explanation and took much more time making sure they were quoting me the correct furnace for my home.
Description of Work: Tom Mounce gave me an estimate for a new gas furnace. He gave me a quote for two different furnaces for $4200 to $5100.

Electrician, John Holt, arrived on time and began working immediately. All new stuff was in boxes, so he opened all of them and went to work. This work was done on all three levels of the house. He checked with me all along the way to make sure where I wanted things placed, appropriate height, etc. Everything was installed cleanly with no nicks or scrapes in ceilings or on walls. All areas were tarped to assure no dust or drywall pieces landed on floor or furniture. At end he cleaned up everything and removed all boxes and old fans and hauled them away in his truck. I had NO cleanup work to do at all. He was here for about 6 1/2 hours with a brief lunch break and a couple cigarette breaks outside in his truck. OUTSTANDING JOB!
Description of Work: Changed 3 new fans for old ones. Added a ceiling fan in place of a ceiling light. Had to "fish" an electrical line about 20 ft above the ceiling and do rewiring to accomplish this. Drilled new hole and fished electrical line to add a new light in area above kitchen sink. Changed out an old dining room chandelier with a new one. Added a sconce light and separate switch in the foyer. This also required adding new electrical line and box and dimmer switch.

Good responsiveness to my first call. I thought the cost was a bit high for 2-2.5 hrs of work. The work was good, though, with no problems. Charging was by the fixture (e.g., $55 for the dining room fixture) and there was an $89 charge for the visit to the house (a travel charge).

One of the best contractor experiences I have ever had. Rob (Technician) explained to me problems he foresaw and the approach he was taking and then kept me updated as he ran into surprises and described to me how his approach would change. He was incredibly professional, courteous, and detail oriented. Finished project was better than we could have expected. Would definitely recommend Hilliard Electric (now part of Nelson Comfort) to my friends.

Like many of you I screened for well rated providers using Angie's List and called 5 or 6 for price quotes. I described in detail exactly what work I needed performed. I selected Hilliard although they had a higher rate per hour than average because they said they did not charge trip charges. While the technician arrived on time he the written quote I recieved before he began working included an $80 trip charge; when I said that they (Greg I think) had verbally given me a different pricing structure he became extremely verbally combative. He explained that the rate I had been quoted for diagnostic and troubleshooting work only; not for an install. I had explained exactly what I wanted performed and even called Hilliard back after scheduling to verify the type of exterior light I should pick up at Home Depot for them to install (answer- any brand will work). As I had taken off work to meet him at the house I decided to just go ahead and have them complete the work. The amount of extra charge exceeded the inconvenience / lost work opportunity to reschedule with another company. Later the tech told me that this has happened before and that he didn't know what was going on at the office. The work was completed relatively promptly and was of good quality. In the grand scheme of things it wasn't a lot of money and the work was fine; I did not appreciate the bait and switch pricing. 100% would NOT use again.
Description of Work: I had a motion activated external light put on the outside of my house. It was an easy job as there was a surface mount plug on the other side of the wall 6' below where the light was being installed. The exterior portion of the install was inside of a conduit.

I requested a service call to do an electrical assessment on a rental property that I own due to concerns with the wiring and the individual circuits to each apartment. We scheduled for the next day at 3 p.m. At 2:45 I received a phone call from dispatch to make sure I would be at the property. I confirmed and proceeded to arrive on time. I received a phone call at the time of the scheduled appointment informing me that they were not going to perform the service call. I further explained what I needed and that I had taken the afternoon off of work to meet them at the property. Pat from dispatch said she would check with management and call me back. At 3:45, I called the office since I had not received a call back from Pat. She informed me that a decision not to come assess the electrical panels was made. She expressed concern that since we were questioning that the wiring was done correctly to each unit and that there was suspicion that wires were tampered with by a tenant that they did not want to provide a professional opinion about the wiring and possibly have to go to court to provide this professional opinion. Why else would someone have an electrical service call if not to get a professionals opinion and have them professionally service the problems? I question a company that can not render a professional opinion and support it on paper or a court of law.

I was getting estimates for adding blown in attic insulation from 3 companies and they all noticed the power vent not working. The estimates to fix ranged from 500 to 750. One company suggested I just call an electrician to fix the fan. I called Hilliard electric because we have used them in the past. They came the next day after I called and fixed it in about an hour by replacing a blown motor.

The workman came out promptly to see what we needed done. Very carefully checked everything out and made sure he understood what needed to be done outside. The bid came in a few days later and several days after that the work began. Workmen were very polite, friendly, and professional and took care of business. The work was done on time. It was a difficult job and was handled very well. They did everything asked of them with a smile.

The service man arrived, put on his shoe covers, and spent about an hour fixing the ductwork.
Description of Work: My washing machine had malfunctioned (one the first floor) and flooded my finished basement. Water had gotten into the air conditioning duct work and eventually, it fell through the ceiling into the basement (the ductwork). It was late afternoon on a Friday. They answered my call, put my mind at ease that the work needed to be done could wait until Monday (so as not to incur an overtime/weekend fee), and they came in the beginning of the week and made the repairs.

I received two bids on the project. I accepted the one from Hilliard even though it was slightly higher than the other estimate. I was impressed by the experience, thoroughness, and care that the man from Hilliard brought to making the estimate. He provided a written estimate within a few minutes after he had finished the inspection. The man who did the estimate did the work, with the assistance of a younger man. They were here on time. I was working from home (on-line) while they worked. They gave me plenty of warning when before they turned the power to the circuit that I was using. They were efficient. They cleaned up after themselves. The whole experience was very smooth.
Description of Work: They replaced the old knob and tube wiring in the attic. There were a couple of ceiling fixtures that had not been properly working: these worked without effort after the wiring in the attic was replaced. They fixed a circuit with a couple of outlets upstairs that needed to be properly grounded. They added a couple of circuits, including one to the outside of the house. They put in a couple of new circuits in the basement., and . They also made some minor repairs of some lights that were not working properly.

I explained what was happening and Duke Energy told us that we needed to have an electrician check it out. So I grabbed the latest Angie?s List book and checked it out, and called Hilliard Electric, and they were here the next day. They were wonderful. It turned out that in the power outage, the dehumidifier which was less than a year old had somehow gotten shorted out, and that was causing the arcing. There was water that had come into the box as well. They did part of the work one day, and then they had to order a part, and they were back within two days.
Description of Work: We used Hilliard Electric to repair some storm damage caused by a tree coming down over our power line. They detected what the problem was, and they indicated that since we were blowing fuses, there had been some damage inside the house. They also put in some new breakers.

I called and spoke to Sandy to shedule an appointment after a storm produced a surge that fried a GFIC plug. Sandy was so nice. She took the info down and sheduled the appointment for the next week. Rob came to do the work and was awesome. He replaced the plug that was faulty and checked all of the other GFIC plugs. He determined that I had 2 other additional plugs that were out. I was happy that Rob was so thorough. Rob gave me a bid to replace the other 2 plugs which was going to be higher than I expected. I called the office and spoke with Greg the manager and he was so nice. He explained that the company had changed hands since my last service call and the pricing policy had changed. Since this wasn't explained when I made the appointment, he agreed on this visit to adjust the price of the visit. He was so nice and thanked me for being a good customer. Rob replaced all of the plugs and gave me the price that Greg had promised me. I have used this company before and I think they are great. Their employees are some of the nicest people I have met and they always do a great job. They are for the customer. I really trust this company.

Rob was at our house for 2 full days. He was extremely professional, knowledgeable and very patient with all of our questions. We felt like the quality of his work was equal to what he would do in his own home. Several of the smaller projects were very easy and he was able to do them very quickly and therefore keep the cost minimal. Rob was exactly the kind of person you want doing professional service work on your home; he truely loves his job. When we moved into our house in September 2008, there were several electrical "issues" found on our inspection as well as several projects we wanted to get done. We called several electrical contractors and Hilliard electric was by far the most honest and professional. Though they did not provide the least expensive estimate they were the most honest about the amount of time the work would take. For instance, they said it could take 5 minutes or 2 hours to re-wire a 4-way switch depending on why it wasn't working. Other companies indicated that this would be easy and cheap. Their price for installing the ceiling fans and exhaust fans was competitive - $275 per ceiling fan and $350 - 400 per exhaust fan. This included runing wires from existing switches that previously ran to switched outlets (now always hot), installing service boxes in the ceiling and installing the fans in the ceiling. The most expensive job was installing an outdoor flood light, which was almost $400. However, this required running wire down from a switch at our backdoor on one side of the house, through the basement across to the other side of our house then through an existing hole in the wall (where hot tub wiring previously existed), finally through conduit up the side of the house to the light. Rob made sure to think towards the future in all of his work - in case we want to make changes down the road. For example, instead of completely removing our 50 amp circuit (previously for a hot tub), he simply capped it off in a junction box in our basement so that we have the option of reusing it in the future. We will definitely use Hilliard Electric again and will request Rob. Note - Hilliard Electric was recently bought out by a larger company so their name may change but their electricians did not.
Description of Work: Install 4 new ceiling fans Install 2 new bathroom ventillation fans Install outdoor floodlight Cap off 50amp circuit - used for hot tub by previous owners and left lying on ground outside Checked bathroom circuts for GFCI Replaced burned out bathroom outlet Re-wired 4-way switch
