About us

Metz Fine Furniture is run by Rick Metz, a sole proprietor with over 34 years of experience in the industry. He is a native to Cincinnati, Ohio. At the young age of five he received his first erector set, and ironically built a chair. Rick comes from a long line of woodcrafters. His love for designing and building furniture was ignited when he was given an opportunity to build custom pieces while employed by A.B. Closson's, a prominent furniture/ art dealer in the Cincinnati area. In 1986 Rick took a major step towards entrepreneurship, and became the sole proprietor of Metz Fine Furniture Repair. There his talents expanded in blending wood color stains and learning to correct problems from damaged wood or recreating a table corner enjoyed by one of his customer's pets. Rick became locally renowned for his talent and expertise. He found himself overwhelmed by business drawn from customer referrals. His work has been featured in numerous magazine and news stations, including Cincinnati Enquirer, Ohio Magazine, Indiana Hill Living, Hyde Park Living, Best of Cincinnati Magazine, WCPO TV, and WXIX TV. We are thrilled with both pieces. The dining table looks awesome, and we can't wait for Rick to repair the chairs that go with it. The dresser is amazing. I'm not sure how he did it, but you'd never know that the dresser had been plagued with water damage and chipped veneer. We are very impressed with Rick's talent, but we are clearly not the only ones. Since he's so good at what he does, he stays very busy. We had to wait a while for Rick's schedule to allow him to work on our pieces, but it was definitely worth the wait. Also, Rick's prices were reasonable, and he finished the items quickly. Overall great experience and highly recommend!
Description of Work: Rick refinished a dining table and dresser that we purchased from a vintage/thrift store. He sanded and stained the oak tabletop and painted the pedastal base white. The dresser was kind of a mess...the top had rippling and a "bubble" in the veneer from water damage, and there were many chunks of veneer missing from the rest of the piece. Rick somehow miraculously repaired the top and replaced/repaired the veneer on the rest of the dresser.

Rich did a FANTASTIC job on all the projects we have used him on. The chairs that he repaired were extremely ornate and he did a masterful job repairing them. all the refinishing work was done by hand and is absolutely beautiful. Furniture that is 100-200 years old now looks as good as new! He is very pleasant, responsive and meets deadlines as well.
Description of Work: We have had Rich repair and refinish a number of antique pieces including dining room chairs that date back to the early 1800's a formal dining room table, kitchen table and several small side tables.

GREAT job! I can't tell where the repair was made and it is much sturdier. Rick found the problem that contribute to the damage and fixed that as well. It is an older chair -- over 100 years, family heirloom. I am so happy that it usable again. Thank you!

His add specified that he served the greater Cincinnati area. It turns out that because I lived in a certain place it would take a lot longer for him to get out their and do the work. He was very helpful in suggesting someone else and his customer service was great. I am getting a refund for the deal.

In a word - great! Rick was responsive, one of few who was willing to take on this large project. He communicates thoroughly, does highest quality work, and is very personable. The weather challenged our schedule but he was able to do an outstanding job. The front doors were removed, taken to his shop, refinished, and reinstalled. They are gorgeous and look better than new. He also refinished a table that had become stained and water damaged. It also looks better than new. We highly recommend Metz's Fine Furniture Repair.

Very pleased with the outcome of the refinishing. Pieces were well worn and desperately needed restoration. Purchased an Angie's List Deal that covered a portion of the price. Rick explained everything in detail and offered options to help keep the price affordable. He is very professional, pleasant and easy to talk with. Rick takes great pride in his work. I will definitely use him again and have already mentioned his name to others.

It all started when we hired cheap movers and that was a huge mistake. My wife's mom gave us an expensive armoire around the time we got married. The movers damaged one of the drawers in a couple different places. Wood was shaved off in one place and the other area that was damaged was worse. I have no knowledge of woodwoorking but I knew we were in trouble. I called the company and they said there was nothing that they could help us with. We needed to get it repaired and that wasn't going to be easy. I called two professionals who are rated higher than Mr. Metz on Angie's List and one said he wouldn't touch it. I took it to the other and he said there was no way he could do it. He did send me in the direction of Mr Metz. He said he was his competition but if there was someone in this area who could do it, he could. I took it to him and he seemed confident he could clean it up for us. He made me feel better but I was just hoping for it to look atleast 70-80% of what it used to look like. When I picked it up the other day I was shocked! It looks perfect to my wife and I and we are so excited! He is an amazing talent and I can't tell that anything ever happened. This man is a woodworking genius and I would put him up against anyone in fixing damage furniture. There isn't anyone in this city with this kind of talent. I can't thank him enough and he is who you should use to fix your furniture. I paid him extra money because what he was charging me wasn't a fair price for the work done. We got lucky we found this man and you will be too.

Rick did an amazing job. I wanted the table to be dark, but not an opaque black. I had a mental image in mind, but I did not think I was projecting it correctly until Rick made a sample before actually starting on my table. His ideas were right on target. I was impressed with his ability to make sense of my description and even more thrilled when I saw the finished product! Absolutely beautiful! It looks like a brand new table. Rick was professional, courteous, and attentive to detail. He was timely in coming to look at my table, giving a quote, and delivering right as expected. I am so satisfied with the work on this table that I am trying to find other furniture for him to re-do. I highly recommend him.
Description of Work: My kitchen table is an old, oaken rock. It's quality is hard to beat in today's furniture world without spending thousands of dollars. Because of the quality and character, I could not think of getting rid of it, but it was definitely "dated." Rick Metz stripped the old stain from my 62" oak table! He re-stained it using a black stain that enables highlights of the brown wood undertones to come through.

Rick did an EXCELLENT job repairing, refinishing, and modifying/updating two bedroom furniture sets (5 pieces total). He exceeded my expectations in every area (quality, craftsmanship, and affordability). He was able to modify the base of each piece to give them a more contemporary look and they look incredible! The repair work to the drawers was perfect and the stain looks beautiful! I'm thrilled we were able to salvage these"old" furniture sets and make them look contemporary and brand new! Rick is extremely knowledgeable, professional, responsive, and affordable. I can't wait to have two more furniture pieces redone by Rick!

A tall bedpost was snapped off where the top attaches to the bottom. It had been previously repaired, but the metal rod that held it in place was frozen and I could not remove it without damaging the wood. Mr. Metz tried to get the pieces apart for no charge, but failing that he came to the house and glued the pieces together. Quality work for a very reasonable price.

Rick handled everything personally. He was very good at explaining his techniques and what he would be doing. He went above and beyond when he found things that needed adjusting/fixing that weren't apparent from looking at the table. And he didn't charge extra for that work. Our table has never looked so good nor felt so solid. He also did the work exactly within the time framework he gave us. We would have no hesitation to call on Rick for future work.

Rick Metz did a superb repair job on the six legs of my sofa. He explained the procedure to me beforehand. I shall definitely call him for any furniture repairs in the future.
Description of Work: Rick Metz came to look at the six wooden legs of my sofa which were wobbly, and one was broken off entirely. Then he called me when he had time to do the job. He fixed them so that they are now stronger than they were when I bought the sofa.

He came to our house, looked at it, told us he could join the two parts back together nearly without a visible seam, quoted us $125, and that's the price he eventually charged us. He took a few weeks, but it was well worth it. He is very enthusiastic about his work, and very professional. I have already booked him to do another job, but there is quite a waiting list now. I suggest getting in line early.
Description of Work: We had a 1940s wooden poster bed, one of the posts was snapped in half by the movers. The ends were quite jagged and looked frankly unfixable. Metz repaired it, so well, that looking at both, I can't tell which one he fixed, that's how good it was.

He delivered them on the date agreed upon. We were literally amazed at the outcome. We doubt if the table and chairs looked this good when brand new some 75 years ago. All the screws were replaced and the chairs are as quiet and sturdy as when new. The chair seats were reupholstered perfectly, very professionally and are comfortable. All the wood surfaces are warm and rich yet durable. Rick is a magician when it comes to refinishing wood. We were so impressed that we are having him refinish two more pieces immediately.
Description of Work: Rick came to the house to pick up a 75 year old solid oak kitchen table, six chairs and five leaf extensions to refinish and reupholster the chair seats. Screws were loose in the table such that the locks did not work. The chairs were all loose and squeaked badly when sitting in them.

About three years ago we purchased a coffee table that we really liked that had a 2 inch decorative reail around the top edge. As soon as it was shipped to us from North Carolina our youngest daugther leaned against it and shatter the rail. We had two different people attempt to fix it but with no luck. We were about to toss it but decided to try and have it fixed one more time as we really liked the table. We came across Rick via Angie's list after talking to a number of people who said it couldn't be fixed. Rick called us right back and we meet him to show him the table. We were originally nervous about putting A$200 into the table but in the end we are so glad we did. He did an outstanding job. Tough to describe here but he essentially redesigned and rebuilt the top of the table. In the end it looked better than when it was new. In no way could you tell it was every damanged.

I will definitely be contacting Rick Metz in the future for a few other pieces needing love. He was quick to respond to my request, very easy to work with, his price was reasonable, the turn around time was super fast, and most importantly his work was/is beautiful. I would definitely recommend Rick to anybody looking to have a piece refinished, repaired, or touched up.
Description of Work: I have a matching dresser and bed frame that I've had since I was little. When my parents got it at a garage sale it was painted black. I painted it black when I moved out on my own. Now I'm at the point where I appreciate wood and wanted to have the pieces restored. Rick came to my house and was able to tell me more about the piece than I ever knew. He took the piece with him, refinished it, stained it to match an armoire in the room, and returned it to me within a week.

Start to finish, fabulous. Professional and personable. He is really a craftsman. His price was very fair, he was on time and I got better results than I would have expected. I already have plans to have him out to freshen up an old wardrobe that looks a little worse from the wear from its travels to Ohio.
Description of Work: During a recent move, my antique dresser's front scrolled leg was broken. I got Rick's name as I was calling around to get some antique wicker chairs repaired. He came out to look a them and he was honest that he could not fix them as his specialty was antique wood furniture. So I had him check out the dresser. He gave me a great price and came the next day to fix it on site. This saved me the cost and hassle of taking it somewhere. Other places had suggested I bring the leg into them. With a house in disarray this seemed a little overwhelming. I ended up with a perfect fix that is invisible to the eye. He made almost no mess and cleaned up the little sawdust he created. He took the time to level the dresser. I had him back to clean, polish and touch up the gauges on my kitchen cabinets. He uses a fine steel wool and cleaner to get off the grime and fingermarks from regular use. They look absolutely new. This kitchen work was the bulk of the total cost. And I should note I have a lot of tall cabinets that fill both a combined kitchen and dining room.
